ooking back to the 1st of June, our amazing team of organisers held our annual community event on the STMA playing fields, bringing together an array of different groups and local organisations for an afternoon of fun in the sun. The weather was fantastic and we couldn’t have been luckier as the clouds and showers were kept at bay for the entire day.

We had pony rides, archery, numerous inflatables (for both big and little kids), bars, various food options, and a mix of displays and entertainment in the arena to promote some of the activities available to join in with in the local area.

The day would not have been possible without our devoted team of volunteers who put in an enormous chunk of their own time into getting the building and the grounds of the STMA prepared and ready to host the event for the people of Shefford and surrounding areas.

Preparations for 2020 have already started and the Fete Team have got even more planned for next year! But to do this we need your support, we are always looking for help and volunteers are appreciated, if you want to get involved then please get in touch.

A regular turnaround period means exhibits are always fresh and current. Founder, Adrian Goulding of ‘Projects in Wood’, restores and renovates furniture. Paintings this month include encaustic wax by Val Oswick, alcohol inks by Annette Glenn, acrylics by Judith Wray, and mixed media from Irina Polis. Blacksmith Lucas Ling’s traditional wrought ironwork is also on display, together with Jo Dunne’s ‘Natural Grace’ heavenly smelling candle products, and Henry Seebohm’s turned wood pieces.

Previous exhibitors include Gwen Payne from Hitchin, who still paints at the grand old age of ninety, while animal sculptures by Jim Francis proved very popular, as did Karen Mangold’s artwork. Karen is well-known for her ‘Golden Hare’ painting, unveiled recently in Ampthill Park, which forms an iconic link with the Golden Hare described in Kit William’s novel. Last month, we also displayed beautifully glazed earthenware pieces by Anja Penger-Onyett, a gifted ceramicist.

Last but by no means least you will find the in-house jeweller, Erika Price, who designs and creates beautiful silver jewellery. For earrings, think Erika, whose delicate butterfly wing earrings are everyone’s favourite! She will also make clip-ons on request.

Double whammy for your money?

The man in the mirror I talked to last month is back again.

He promised to tell me the investments his convictions say we should make now. He tells me markets are volatile and heading for a major fall. So he suggests after holding cash in the bank for emergencies that 80% of our pension funds and other monies need to be in Gilts and Global Bond funds. These holdings could well rise in value when the market tumbles. Then use the volatile market to become a ‘profit taker’ so invest 20% in risky funds that rise and fall rapidly – every time your funds rise by 5% press the button and take just the profit in cash. Have a pile of cash ready to buy in at lower prices as markets fall leaving the original funds invested. This way when the markets correct, or fall, you will have the cash to buy in low and profit when the market rises again. So double whammy – 80% of your funds should rise when the market falls and profits from the balance, use a profit taking strategy to gear up larger profits as the markets rise again.

Through my Birdwatching Group we had a great weekend away last week (Bank Holiday Weekend) to just south of Scarborough. It has a visitor centre and about seven platforms for you to watch the bird seen one before and I was not disappointed. DELIVERY BOYS’ REVIEW

We check out the local restaurants & eateries nice! Just what was needed before heading off for delivery duties. We also ordered coffees, a flat white and a latte and up on the large black board we had to chuckle at the “No nonsense coffee guide”.

The staff are lovely and our friendly waitresses Georgia and Abby served us well. We also got to chat to Harley, the owner, who took on the cafe in July 2017, who explained that the cafe is very popular for baby showers and afternoons tea.

Last month the delivery boys decided to fuelup for breakfast before starting their Saturday morning shift in Campton. We headed to ‘Rose Buds at Duck Lane’, a familiar landmark and popular destination on Shefford High Street.

Unfortunately it was a rainy day so we couldn’t sit outside and watch the world go by, so we headed in to find a table. Inside, the cafe is beautifully decorated, with large ornate chandeliers and exposed wooden beams and interesting artefacts and signs on the walls and shelves. It certainly has that vintage cafe and tea room look and feel about it. One thing we noted is that there’s lots of space with plenty of tables and chairs and you don’t feel cramped at all, ideal for pushchairs or wheelchair users.

Moving onto breakfast, Rose Buds offers a large range of breakfast and brunch options, including both vegetarian and vegan. All the ingredients are locally sourced.

Andrew ordered the vegetarian ciabatta melt from the ‘Brunch Favourites’ section of the menu and John ordered the ‘RB Brunch Bagel’, a black board special.

The vegetarian ciabatta melt consisted of mushrooms, tomato, spinach, grilled cheese and a fried egg on top of a ciabatta with melted cheese. It looked as delicious as it tasted. The RB Brunch Bagel contained rocket, bacon, egg with chilli jam in a bagel. It was so 24

There are so many good things at Rose Buds; the tempting Homemade Cake Station and the handy Children’s Station, stocked full of pens, paper, books and games; perfect for keeping toddlers occupied whilst mum & dad can relax for 5 minutes whilst enjoying a cup of coffee. Welcome to our monthly feature: ’Kid’s Got Talent’ The place where we showcase the amazing talents of local children.

We hope this will help motivate and inspire other children to discover new sports and hobbies.

Road, Track and Cyclo-Cross cycling, Q. How did you get involved in cycling?

We always went for family rides, but I saw it on TV and thought “I want to do that!”

Q. When do you practice, where and for how long?

Are you a member of a club?

I train most days, usually out on the roads, but sometimes on the track (velodrome) or in the gym.

Q. Do you get the chance to compete?

I compete most weekends, at varying levels, from local to national racing.

Q. Where is your favourite place to cycle?

Either the Isle Of Man or the Lake District.

Q. Do you prefer cycling on your own or in a group?

Most of my training is done solo, which does allow for flexibility, but nothing beats a summer ride with your mates Q. What is your greatest cycling achievement to date?

3rd at the National Road Championships in Scarborough in front of my big brother last year was definitely an emotional moment! Also, winning the National Cyclo-Cross Team champs this year with my team mates was cool.

Q. Who looks after your bike in terms of maintenance and cleaning?

My Dad, Neil, is practically my mechanic, although I do try to help him out occasionally.

Q. How much does it cost to participate in your sport? How many bikes do you have?

It can be as expensive as you make it really, but as with most sports, the top equipment is expensive. My sponsors, such as Limar Helmets, are a big help. I have 4 bikes across 3 disciplines (Road, Cyclo-Cross, Track).

Q. What are the main challenges you are up against participating in your sport?

Some of the hardest parts are mental, such as making decisions quickly whilst concentrating on the other riders, who can be as close as an inch away.

Q. Is you sport dangerous?

It generally isn’t dangerous, but at such close proximity, there are a few bumps, especially in sprint finishes. It also depends on who you ride with.

Q. Cycling in the winter is pretty brutal, how do you cope with it?

With plenty of layers, and good gloves, ride quickly and you’ll soon be warm.

Throughout the winter I will train on an indoor trainer in my kitchen.

Q. Do you have a cycling hero or an inspirational figure?

Someone I look up to is Geraint Thomas as he is so humble yet such an exceptional rider.

Q. Do you dream of the Tour de France?

Le Tour De France would be amazing, but how achievable is yet to be seen.

Q. How would someone get involved in cycling? And do you have any tips for newbies?
