H
enlow Youth cycling was born from an idea of giving young cycle racers somewhere to transfer their skills between their off-road and road season. We have a small but technical road circuit that is provided to us by RAF Henlow, it’s a fantastic facility that we have and unlike anything else locally. We also have room for younger riders to hone their skills. During the winter we have use of an off-road area that we use to teach Cyclocross skills. What started out with a mere 6-10 attendees has steadily grown to over 30 children attending each session. Starting off with 1 British Cycling level 2 coach and a level 1 coach we have continued to develop not only the children but also the parents, we now have 5 level 2 trained coaches.
We have children from the age of 5 who have recently learned to ride through to 16-year olds that are racing at county and national levels. Our group provides coaching for a few clubs in the area, we have children that represent Hitchin Nomads, Icknield road club, Milton Keynes CC and plenty of children that just want to ride their bikes in a non-competitive environment. We teach children the fundamentals of cycling, everything from pedalling and braking all the way through to gear selection and cornering techniques. During the summertime we will concentrate on road riding, and during the winter we will move onto the grass, this is more difficult for the younger ones, but they soon get to grips with it. It also means that we don’t have to cancel sessions due to water laying on the circuit. All the children are encouraged, but not forced to race at the winter muddy monsters’ series that is organised by British cycling and hosted by various clubs from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire areas. These events allow them to put into practice the skills they have learnt. With RAF Henlow set to close in the next few years we would love to have secured a training area that would mean the legacy of RAF Henlow and what it has provided to the local area could continue to operate. We hope to find a local company or individual who could help us approach the local councils to show the work we are doing with the community, in the hope that they may be able to provide us somewhere, this is a long way off yet but there’s no reason not to plan for the future! To find out more, please get in touch via our Facebook page: Youth cycling @ RAF Henlow 6

et yourself outdoors and active, improving fitness, learning new skills and using up tons of energy by getting stuck into Obstacle Course Racing (OCR).
Obstacle arenas are fun-filled fitness facilities which will get you running, jumping, climbing, crawling, balancing, swinging and carrying as well as, optionally, getting thoroughly covered in mud! Everyone supports each other and you will quickly make new friends whilst improving strength, speed and stamina. You don’t have to go to a major event like Tough Mudder to enjoy the OCR experience, there are local, inexpensive facilities which operate all the year round providing a great venue to take a group of children or adults for team bonding, outdoor fitness training or an unusual birthday party. Either get yourself along to a weekly class, hire the venue privately for your sports team, scouts/guides or just a group of friends. Or get the kids involved in a seasonal activity, for example “Children’s Active Hour” which operates during school half term and throughout the summer holidays. Some obstacles you’ll find very easy, others will need some skill and practice, gradually building up confidence and overcoming any fear of heights or confined spaces. Professional, insured, fitness personnel experienced in Obstacle Course Racing are on hand to ensure you learn all the techniques needed. You will have a brilliant time!
See you in the mud! 8

Welcome to our monthly feature: ’Kid’s Got Talent’ The place where we showcase the amazing talents of local children. We hope this will help motivate and inspire other children to discover new sports and hobbies.
Name: Grace Endersby Age: 12 from: shefford Q. Briefly explain your talent. I am a Baton Twirler. I use dance, gymnastics and baton twirling in a choreographed routine, I perform different types of routines which include solo, two baton, dance twirl, poise, fancy strut and freestyle. Q. How did you become a Baton Twirler? When I was four my mum was looking for an activity for me to do and she saw that they took children from the age of four. She said it looked fun and it was local. I don’t think she realised what she let herself in for!! Q. When do you practice, with who and for how long? I train twice a week with the Stotfold Twirlers, more leading up to competitions and once a month with the England national squad Q. What do you love about baton twirling? I love the friendships that I have made, I now have friends all over the country. I love going to competitions and each time trying to do a little better than I did before and of course I love the costumes and the makeup!! There is not one day when my Baton is not in my hand. Q. What is your number one challenge as a baton twirler? My biggest challenge is not to drop the Baton during a routine and to have a clean routine, you get penalties if you do, and of course to remember my routine properly. Q. What are your goals/dreams/visions? My biggest dream is to be selected to be part of the Worlds team for England. I have been very lucky to be part of the England junior team for three years now and this August I travel 10

to France for the international cup. It will be the first time I will perform on my own representing England as before I was part of the Junior team routine so I am very nervous but I know it’s all great experience for me for the future. Q. Can baton twirling be dangerous? Do you ever get injured? The batons are made of metal and they have rubber on each end, so yes, a Baton landing on your head can hurt...a lot!!! I normally come home bruised but it is just part of practising. Q. Do you enter competitions or perform in shows and have you ever won any prizes? Yes I compete a lot, we travel all around the country and we also perform at local displays. My biggest achievement was at this year’s Nationals when I became the National Champion for Junior Novice Dance Twirl....I cried when they called my name I was so happy. I also came third in May at the British Open Freestyle competition....I had never made the finals before so I couldn’t believe it. Q. Who is the best baton twirler you have met? I love watching the French team perform, they are amazing, their group routines are so skilful and the choreography is wonderful. I met lots of brilliant Twirlers in Dublin last year from all over Europe, I have been very lucky.
For more information: Please contact the Stotfold twirlers on Facebook: www.fb.com/StotfoldTwirlers or please contact the coach at: Sonia.crook@hotmail.com

living in chicksands
by John McBurney Lindsay Edwards, who is a personal stylist and runs her own business called ‘Reimagise’, pictured with her husband Ryan and two sons. Q. How long have you lived in Chicksands and what is it like? We have lived here for over 16 years now. We were one of the first set of residents to move in on our road after the military sold on the housing to form our private estate. It’s been wonderful! I say been, as we moving house imminently. Although we are excited to move on to pastures new, we couldn’t have wished for a nicer estate to live in, whilst raising our family. Q. What do you like about living in Chicksands? The space! Not only are the houses very spacious, but we have lots of green space surrounding our houses too, which is fantastic for the children. The majority of the children living here know each other from attending the local schools, so they are always knocking for one another to go and ‘play out’. At weekends, our sons are usually outside playing a game of football with their friends, instead of being on electronics - which is a rarity nowadays! Q. What does Chicksands have that other places don’t have? A genuine sense of community spirit. We’ve always found Chicksands a really friendly place to live, where people know each other and look out for one another. Q. What’s it like living next to a military camp? The majority of the time we forget that we live next to a military base.. until a Chinook flies over our house! In all the years we’ve been here, the novelty of seeing them fly over still hasn’t worn off.
Karen Tight who runs her own dog grooming business called ‘Prestige Pooches’, pictured with her two daughters. Q. How long have you lived in Chicksands and what is it like? We have lived here since the houses were first sold off about 16 years ago. Chicksands is a lovely estate to live on. All the neighbours look out for each other, we even have a facebook page where we can communicate with one another. Q. What do you like about living here? This is a quiet estate with friendly residents. When I was pregnant with my first child a neighbour of mine, also pregnant, wrote me a letter asking if I wanted to meet up, we have been friends ever since. It is also a lovely place to have pets as there are plenty of safe places for cats and lovely local places to walk the dogs. We even have resident ducks that come every summer. Q. What is it like living next to the military camp? I feel safer knowing that they are next door, but we don’t really notice they are there. Q. What does Chicksands have that other places do not? Chicksands is probably the only estate that has so much greenery and open places for children to play. It is nice that all the houses are not on top of each other. You also get much more for your money here as the houses are spacious and easy to work on. Some residents have built extensions, loft conversions or dormers. 14

How well is your money working for you?
If you are someone who has only ever put their money in the bank or building society, have you ever wondered where you could put your money to get more back than the low interest rates you get at the moment? Well, you would need to learn about the different types of investments available from the Stock Market. There are just two main ways of accessing this market place where there are many variations and types of these two main forms of investing. But to keep it simple, the two ways are either to lend your money through the stock market or to take part ownership of companies by buying shares in the companies of your choice. If you go with the first option, you will essentially be lending your money to governments and businesses, either in the UK or overseas. Each lending arrangement you make provides you with interest payments year by year at a fixed rate and a return of your capital at the maturity date of the loan. Always ensure you invest through a unit trust to reduce the risk of losing interest or your initial capital. Next month, I’ll go into detail on the second option, and how to buy shares in companies...... If you have questions that you need answered to do with savings and investments you can contact Robert at harrisfinancialfriend@gmail.com Robert’s job is not to give financial advice but to use simple explanations that help you along the way

Grand Opening of Chandlers Shefford Country Stores
O
ur Chandlers country store team were pleased to welcome and meet many pet, equestrian and country enthusiasts at our Grand opening of the Shefford Store on 22nd June. Not only this but we also met many new canine friends, all of who enjoyed a complimentary pigs ear!! We had a fun time delivering competitions, quizzes and free tea and cake to our visitors, with lemon drizzle the firm favourite on such a beautiful sunny day. We had lots of fabulous entries into the Bruder, Siku, Schleich and Crafty Pony colouring competition and the competition winners were all pleased to come and collect their prizes. At the open day our brand experts from Milwaukee power tools, Top Spec and Emerald Green horse feed, Nettex equestrian supplements and Skinners dog food, were kept busy with lots of questions and providing valuable advice. We had many promotions running across the store with some of the most popular being discounts on natural dog treats and Kong dog toys, Ariat clothing and footwear offers, Weatherbeeta prime and le Mieux reductions and special prizes on Stihl. Our first 50 customers were all delighted to receive a free gift with purchase, either pet, equine or country store themed. Not only that but we had free goody bags from many of our brands and a make your own goody bag from Allen and Page.
We really look forward to welcoming all those that we met on the day and many new faces. 18

Artisans in the yard a poem by Marje Fitt
Take a wander down the alleyway, beside the Builder’s store, And come across a gallery with treasures you’ll adore. On show the skill of artisans, their work for all to see. It gilds the walls, delights the soul, all there for you and me! Sometimes you’ll find objects in wood, or ironmongery. Some wall art made from resin with surprising artistry. A card selection you will find, sweet smelling candles too, A superb choice of jewellery, and paintings - come and view! And if it’s furniture you seek that’s different from the rest, Then look no further, have a browse, we’ll stir your interest! So tell the arty friends you know to give The Yard a try. It’s different! It’s a changing scene in Shefford... do drop by!

DELIVERY BOYS’ REVIEW by John McBurney & Andrew Martin
We check out the local restaurants & eateries Saturday morning the pub was fairly busy, and as it turned out The Cornerstone is the meeting place for a local ‘sports syndicate’ called the ‘10:28 Club’, who meet every Saturday morning at, yes, you’ve guessed it, 10:28am! They meet up for breakfast, banter and perhaps the occasional beer! A fascinating and entertaining bunch of people to meet. If you fancy a good full english breakfast then The Cornerstone is the place to go, serving breakfast between 10am and 12pm on Friday Breakfast, the most important meal of the day! and Saturday, whilst on Sunday they offer a Sunday Roast. Once again the delivery boys decided to ‘fuel up’ before starting their Saturday morning delivery round in Shefford. We headed to The Cornerstone, a familiar landmark in the centre of Shefford, and received a warm, friendly welcome from the management team, Rod and Michelle. The Breakfast menu is simple and straight forward at The Cornerstone, you get the basic full english, which includes 2 bacon, 2 sausages, 2 eggs and toast, plus you get to choose 3 of the following: mushrooms, beans, black pudding, tomatoes, hash browns, fried potato & onion or fried slice. You want it your way? You got it! There’s even vegetarian options as well. Tea or coffee is also included and both Andrew and I opted for coffee and were very impressed by the delicious Lavazza coffee that arrived at our table whilst we waited for our breakfast to be cooked. Breakfast arrived soon enough and it ticked all the boxes. Perfect eggs, fresh toast, tasty sausages, we scoffed the lot, a fantastic way to start the day! One of the good things about The Cornerstone is its prime location in the town centre and when sat at a window seat you are perfectly placed to watch Shefford life pass by. For a 24
