ids were made to move. Running comes naturally to children, plus it’s fun and free!

The children’s charity, Kids Run Free put on free running events in parks and green spaces to encourage this natural movement and inspire a lifelong love of physical activity.

Kids Run Free passionately believes that physical activity can unlock the potential in all children, making them happier, healthier and more confident for life.

The Kids Run Free Shefford event takes place on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month at Millennium Green Park, Purcell Way SG17 5RY. Please arrive at 8:45 am for warm ups and the running starts at 09:00 am for an hour. Children can run as many laps of the course as they want and parents/carers are encouraged to join in too.

There’s no need to sign up, just go along and take part!

If you want you to get your child’s school more active the charity also offer a FREE schools programme called Marathon Kids. Children are challenged to run up to 4 marathons over the school year and their distances are tracked so they can set themselves goals and measure their progress.

ai Chi – an exercise for all ages and all levels, is a way of developing balance and preventing falls, a martial art, a perspective on life and a very sociable activity – Tai Chi can be many things to many people. The classes in Shefford are mostly about health and falls prevention such as the relaxing drop-in classes for beginners at the Community Hall on Mondays at 2.30pm or on Sundays at 6.30pm. For senior practitioners it is open to explore the breadth of Tai Chi in a weekly senior class or further training with international level instructors including from China.

Shefford Tai Chi practice Chen Style which is the original form from China in the early 1600s, created by the Chen family and passed on to the rest of the world over the following 400 years. The synthesis of Tai Chi practice incorporates health approaches including Chi Kung and Traditional Chinese Medicine, philosophies such as Taoism and Buddhism along with martial arts focused training for those that are interested. Tai Chi truly works with mind, body and spirit.

The joy of singing

I

I am often asked if I can teach anyone to sing. Are there some people who cannot sing? Can people really be ‘tone deaf’? ks to ibution than Contr

If you can speak you can sing.

Having the skill to sing well is something we can learn and develop with practise. The main obstacle to overcome is often a lack of confidence in our own voice. Perhaps singing did not take place within your home as a child or you were told you could not sing. No one should be discouraged from singing. Singing is something we can all do to enrich our lives and you do not have to be gifted with a voice like Adele or Michael Buble to benefit from the pleasure and positive health effects that singing can give you.

For many years I have had the great privilege of teaching music to people of all ages from pre-schoolers to those in their nineties. I have worked with extremely talented individuals and those who are reluctant to sing for fear of ridicule. I have witnessed the joy singing can bring to the individual when they overcome that fear.

Singing feels personal because your voice is unique to you.

Joining a choir can be an easy way of getting into singing. Singing with others also offers a great opportunity to meet new people, improve singing skills whilst hiding in the crowd, and have fun making a wonderful sound with others.

I established my singing school Vocal Works to train young singers with the vocal skills needed to perform contemporary music and to work towards graded exams.

Vocal Works has also proven to attract many children who simply needed more confidence in using their voice in speaking as well as singing.

That makes it special.

The most important thing to remember is that unless you aspire to become a professional singer it does not really matter hat you sound like. Singing is good for you! As we sing our body releases endorphins which make us feel good.

the benefits of running Christmas has come and gone, the beginning of a New Year is upon us and with that the perfect opportunity to set new goals arrives!

As we touched upon last issue, at RunShefford we run a variety of different sessions aimed at runners of all ages and abilities. We have ‘steady’ and ‘interval’ based runs each week which offer variety as well as having different fitness based benefits.

A ‘steady’ run would be to run at the same pace over a prolonged period of time (20-60+ minutes) with the aim of building up your stamina.

The ‘interval’ sessions are made up of several shorter bursts of faster running with sections of slower running, or walking, in-between with a view to helping you to get your body used to running faster and making you a stronger, more efficient runner.

In amongst these sessions, we try to include drills to help with your running technique as well as offering a friendly and encouraging environment to help you achieve your own personal goals.

We have just started doing two groups on a Monday night which offer you the chance to do either a shorter or a longer distance which are both open to anyone and enable us to help you progress you on your running journey whether you’re just starting out or an established runner!

Lastly, we are also running a new Couch to 5K course starting this January for 8 weeks which you are very welcome to sign-up for to help with those New Year resolutions! You can get an idea of the course by looking at the NHS Courch to 5K plan at https://www.nhs.uk/livewell/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/ as this is what we base our sessions for the course on.

Why You Shouldn’t Bother Making New Year’s Resolutions They Don’t Really Work. Here’s What to Do Instead

N

ew Year’s resolutions are as old as time, but that doesn’t mean they’re very effective. It only takes a day or two into January before the #resolutionfail hashtag starts trending on social media.

I’m sure you have your own personal stories of starting the New Year strong only to get busy, fall behind, and eventually lose motivation.

by Andrew Martin It’s happened to me. And it’s exactly why I don’t bother making New Year’s resolutions anymore—at least not the usual kind. When I think of my health, my family, my business, I know for certain: Some dreams are just too important to entrust to a faulty system.

Instead, I utilize a proven goal-setting process that incorporates safeguards for many of the pitfalls and failings of typical resolutions.

I have researched many different types of systems and have come to realise that an effective goal-setting system must factor at least five dimensions of goal-attainment: Genuine possibility.

Unless we believe we can reach our goals, we’re sure to miss. The number of people in their twenties who achieve their resolutions is far greater than those over fifty (39 percent to 14 percent). Why? It’s sad, but the greater the number of setbacks we’ve experienced in life the less likely we are to believe we can prevail. It’s like a goal-toxin. To reach our goals, we need to trade these limiting beliefs for liberating truths.

Past experience.

Dragging the worst of the past into the best of the future is another reason our resolutions fail.

If we get closure on the past, especially those efforts that went unregarded or unrewarded, we’re able to more confidently step into the future.

Effective design.

Part of the problem with typical New Year’s resolutions is that they’re poorly designed. “Lose weight” or “spend less, save more” fail on several counts. Among other things, effective goals are specific and measurable. Goals poorly formulated are goals easily forgotten.

Intrinsic motivation.

Another major reason resolutions fail is that we’re not motivated enough to attain them.

Without a compelling reason to persist, we lose interest, get distracted, or forget what we purposed to do. “People lose their way, when they lose their why.”

Proven tactics.

Finally, resolutions fail because we’re missing proven implementation tactics. Winning a battle takes both strategy and tactics. But unless someone shows us what works best for attaining our goals, we’re left to luck or hard knocks. No wonder it sometimes takes us five or six years in a row to finally achieve an important resolution.

t’s that time of year that we see many people starting a health kick, whether it’s ‘dry January’, detox month’ or the start of a New Year’s resolution to lose weight following a Christmas of indulging in food and drink. This year try shifting your focus from Weight to health for a much more positive outlook.

Diet:

Many people use diets to lose weight, often switching from one to another when they find that a little weight creeps back on after a while. While some diet programs can work short term, your focus should be on your long term benefits you achieve from your lifestyle choices.

Don’t allow a diet to change your relationship with food, as cutting something you enjoy out of your diet all together will likely result in you craving it more and binging on it at the weekend.

Instead try to make small changes gradually.

Good health should be built and maintained over the long term.

Exercise:

You don’t have to work out for 2 hours a day to achieve good health. Find something you enjoy and it won’t seem like hard work.

It may be that you start walking, possibly with someone else and gradually increase your distance. Something else I recommend is for people to try something they don’t feel they can do.

This may be something like a press up, jogging or even trying to do a handstand with your kids.

We only get one body so make the most of it. You will be surprised what you can do with practice.

Pupils receive the perfect Christmas p

P

upils at Ivel Valley School received a new minibus, donated by the Lord’s Taverners.

The school, which is a local authority area special school, caters for pupils with special needs from across the eastern part of Central Bedfordshire, including Shefford and Clifton.

Chair of Governors, Gill Needham, was thrilled that the school was receiving such a generous gift. “Our pupils are an integral part of the community. Having transport available to allow them to access the local area, and further afield, is an enormously beneficial resource.”

Ivel Valley School aims to offer learners as many experiences as possible to promote confidence building, personal and social development and independent living. Above all, they want pupils to have fun and to embrace new experiences and opportunities! Minibuses enable them to offer a range of recreational trips and short residential visits for selected pupils each year, some of which are sponsored by local community and charitable groups.

Chairman of the Ouse Valley Lady Taverners, Liz McGowan presented the 16 seater minibus to the school in December. The Lord’s and Lady Taverners run events throughout the year to raise funds supporting the purchase of equipment in the area. The equipment cost a total of £40,843 of which the school raised a percentage (£17,000) through sponsorship and fundraising activities.

Principal, Joe Creswick, thanked the Lord’s and Lady Taverner’s for the charitable donation.

“Funding is extremely limited so donations of this nature are essential to ensure we can provide the best possible outcomes for pupils.”

KEEPING SHEFFORD TIDY Your opportunity to get involved with the community, a date for your diary by Teresa Gage

o you fancy getting involved in the Shefford Litter Pick on Saturday 5th January and help make Shefford a cleaner and tidier place?

Come along to celebrate the first birthday of Keep Shefford Tidy’s inception! Drop in at the Town Council offices on the High Street between 09:30 and 10am to collect bags, gloves, pickers and choose where you would like to clean up!

They also share advice and tips on how to go out litter picking safely. The page also proudly showcases their results, so that they can demonstrate to the wider community how removing the litter from our streets makes such a difference to where we all live! Go alone, go in a team, for five minutes or for an hour or more. We appreciate everyone’s effort, big or small, to Keep Shefford Tidy! You will be able to sign in, collect equipment, read health and safety guidelines and bring back filled bags to Shefford House. Recycling efforts are really appreciated.

Shefford & Clifton Celebrate Christmas in Style

C

hristmas has been and gone and we now head into a new year, however, it is important to look back and remember how well the local communities came together and celebrated Christmas.

Shefford High Street entertains

Light Up events took place in both Shefford and Clifton on 1st December and both events did it in amazing style. It’s warming to watch people come together to celebrate Christmas in this way.

Light Up Clifton There was a huge turnout congregating outside the Admiral Pub as the community of Clifton joined in to celebrate the start of Christmas.

Children were able to meet Santa and his Sleigh and have a spin on the merry-go-round. There was also an amazing array of food and drink on offer and plenty of mulled wine.

Shefford Switch On Once again, the closed High Street of Shefford was completely packed full of people as the Xmas festivities began. There were stalls and food stands and a whole host of fairground rides to keep the kids entertained. The countdown to the switch on soon ended and all of a sudden the Shefford town centre illuminations glowed once more, this was then followed by some lovely carol singing. A truly delightful event.
