NOTE FROM THE EDITOrS A romantic welcome to the 3rd edition of LivingLife magazine. It’s exciting to see our magazine go from strength to strength and we are encouraged by the positive feedback we have received. Our aim is to produce a magazine that is focused on the local area providing content that is interesting, relevant and fun.

As we stride into February, although still quite wintery, spring is just around the corner. This month we honour Valentine’s Day and in our FocusOn feature we celebrate with an amazing array of photographs which perfectly capture the fun-loving community we live in. In an effort to find out exactly how romantic the people of Shefford & Clifton really are, our roving photographer hit the streets with his camera in one hand and a big red heart in the other. His mission was simple: to persuade the local workers to step out of their cozy, warm shops or premises and strike a romantic pose.

Would he be successful with his challenge?

Well, we were totally overwhelmed by how many people joined in. We can conclude that the workforce in Shefford & Clifton is definitely not camera shy!

We had butchers, barbers, solicitors, road workers, hairdressers, estate agents, travel agents, publicans and many, many more. Check out our Valentine’s Day photo montage over the next couple of pages and see if you can spot anyone you know!

From Shakespeare to Snoop Dogg, Homer’s The Illiad to Homer the Simpson, it seems everybody wants to write songs about love. On a day full of munching on heart-shaped chocolates, hiding flowers behind your back and treating your spouse, partner or loved ones, the chances are you’ll be needing a sound track. Well, you’re in luck! Tim Burns, who leads Cords Community Choir (which meets in Haynes and Stotfold every Tuesday) has prepared a hit song for every loving occasion, be it platonic, romantic or altogether more intimate.

Friendship: “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” - Randy Newman The theme tune for “Toy Story” (and thus, many a millenial’s childhood), Randy Newman’s most famous song articulates a deep undying bond between two lifelong friends, in a whimsical manner that always leaves us smiling. Sure, it may be written from the perspective of an inanimate toy, but that doesn’t change its sentimental value.

B-side: “With A Little Help From My Friends” - The Beatles Siblings: “We Are Family” - Sister Sledge With a groove guaranteed to make you move, this Chic-inspired disco hit celebrates all that is good about sisterly love. love working with flowers of any colour, but quite often people ask me about the meaning of flowers, mostly when asking about roses. Steeped in tradition and etiquette stemming back to the Victorian Era, the colour of a rose can convey a meaningful message. Back in the 19th century, the Victorians used to present one another with gifts as a way to deliver secret messages. Floriography is the term people use to describe Victorian flower language (if you need something to compare it to in the modern world, you can think of their use of flowers to be similar to the way we use emojis). So, what does the colour of a rose mean today?

The Red rose has long been associated with beauty and perfection. A red rose is a timehonoured way to say “I love you.” Whether it’s for a birthday, Valentine’s Day or just to express appreciation on any old day, there’s no better way than a bouquet of red roses to express your feelings.

White roses are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings, but their quiet beauty has also made them a gesture of remembrance. When the occasion calls for reverence, whether stately or sombre, a bouquet of white roses is a perfect way to say, “I’m thinking of you.”

The Pink rose is bright and beautiful to behold, fabulously versatile when you have something important to say. A classic symbol of grace and elegance, the pink rose is often given as a token of admiration and appreciation. Whether they’re for your best friend, fiancée or ever-dependable colleague, a pink rose bouquet will create a bright spot in a special someone’s day.

Orange roses are the wild child of the rose family. Whatever feelings you might be bubbling over with – enthusiasm, passion, or gratitude, orange roses will get the message across with both oomph and elegance.

Yellow roses. When it comes to sending a joyful message, a yellow rose is your best friend. In fact, yellow roses are a traditional symbol of friendship, so there you go. e often link our brain with how ‘smart’ or clever’ someone is; however, the brain is much more than that.

Our brain essentially sits in a dark box (our skull) and yet can perform incredible functions. It’s ability to learn, develop and change is remarkable.

This ability to change is called neuroplasticity. Connections within the brain are continually becoming stronger or weaker depending on what we are experiencing or using. Repetition strengthens neural pathways within the brain allowing us to learn, think or behave in certain ways. If you learn a new skill, there will be a pathway within your brain which is allowing you to do it and has been developed through practice.

Often with neurological disorders, a combination of functions are impaired as everything within the brain is interacting with each other to execute the desired function and rarely does anything work in complete isolation.

The brain stores and creates our ability to move, interprets sensation, processes visual information, allows us to use language as well as operating vital functions of our heart and breathing control. In fact, if you can think of something your body does or a skill you have, you can safely say your brain is controlling it. Not bad for something which has been sat in a dark box your whole life.

We take all these functions for granted mainly because so much of them are happening automatically without us having to consciously control them. It is only when something is disrupted that the brain’s true power is recognised, as a function which you may take for granted, or in fact not even realise is essential to everyday living can have a significant impact on your life.

As time progresses, living a life will bring about many changes, which is why in this magazine we want to talk about some of things that can happen in life. These changes can be managed financially to keep readers secure and help ensure that they always have enough money in hand to cope with all that life brings. Strange though, that we learnt nothing about saving and investing money when we were at school, college or even university. This column will regularly bring you hints and tips and the knowledge you need to make better choices with your money.

At the moment, money in the bank earns very little, but Goldman Sachs now offer their Marcus account at 1.5% per annum interest on an instant access basis – maybe that’s better than the current rate on your savings? However, last year, prices in the supermarkets rose by 4%, and the cost of living is still rising by around 3% this year. So, even at 1.5% interest, your money will buy less in the shops when you spend it in the future. That is why this column will help you understand how you might invest in different ways, understand risk but seek to make your money grow.

I ordered ‘Nam Prig Paow’ (stir fried vegetables in chilli oil paste with chicken and rice), whilst Andrew ordered ‘Guay Thew Pad See Mao’ (stir fried egg noodles with garlic, chilli, vegetables and chicken) and we both ordered the Hot & Sour soup for starters.

s a community magazine we are unique in that the delivery of the magazine is carried out by ourselves. Our small, two man team will deliver 4600 magazines to the homes, shops and businesses in Shefford & Clifton.

It is no mean feat and I have to admit it is hard work, both physically and mentally, and as you can imagine works up an enormous appetite and thirst. During last month’s delivery, myself and Andrew walked along Bedford Road, heading towards Northbridge Street. It was lunch time and as we went past the Bangkok Lounge our heads turned as we spotted the ‘Open’ sign on the front door.

Ours starters arrived, which were scoffed in minutes, a lovely soup, really tasty, and without over doing it with the seasoning.

Whilst we waited for our mains it gave us a few moments to examine our surroundings. The decor inside the restaurant is modern and fresh but with some authentic elements including a golden dragon statue and an ornate wooden feature on the wall.

Our main courses soon arrived and the food

Our stomachs growled noisily (well, mine did) and temptation was too much, so without hesitation we headed straight for the door.

Once inside, we were immediately greeted by our friendly host, called Abu, who kindly ushered us to our table. We were soon perusing the spe18

was mouthwatering, to put it simply, amazingly, tasty food! Lots of flavours to go with the perfectly cooked vegetables with just the right amount of crunch and of course accompanied with a good kick of chilli.

After our meal we got to meet the chef. We departed, feeling immensely satisfied, ready to endure another 4 hrs of magazine delivery.

on their lunch time menu is ample. It is also exceptionally good value, you can’t go wrong with 2 courses for £9.50.

The service is also nice and quick, which is what you want at lunch time, especially if you have things to do during the afternoon.

As a lunch time destination the Bangkok Lounge is perfect.

The service from the staff is superb, very friendly but also quite laid back and casual, which makes you feel nice and relaxed. The food is delicious and the range of dishes

At this time of year it’s great to get outside and train in the open air. In winter the Sun is more of a friend than a heater, and this will help combat SAD (seasonal affective disorder). When training in cold weather there are some medical considerations to be aware of, for example, do you have a pre-existing condition such as asthma? The shock of breathing in cold air can exacerbate your condition.

During winter it’s important to stay hydrated. When training outdoors you need to be able to regulate body temperature to prevent hypothermia, it is best to use a layering system which should consist of a wicking base layer, a good insulating mid layer, topped off with a lightweight water/wind resistant shell. Add in a hat and gloves for good measure.

KEEPING SHEFFORD TIDY An update on the litter picking event on 5th January - Thank you to all involved by John McBurney

L

ast month it was fantastic to see so many volunteers helping out at the ‘Keep Shefford Tidy’ litter picking event. The event was well attended, with teams and individuals hitting the streets to collect discarded rubbish and litter. There was also a concentrated effort down at Drovers Spinney; the picturesque beauty spot next to the River Hit at the back of Morrisons’ car park, which now looks vastly improved.

A big thanks goes out to the event organisers, mainly Teresa Gage and Claire Cornelius, and to the volunteers who turned up on the day.

Also, a special thanks to Paul Mackin and Francesca Fitch from Shefford Town Council who supported the event by supplying the litter picking equipment and allowing the town council offices to be used as the event HQ. The next litter picking event is still to be confirmed, however, it will probably

take place during the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ organised by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ which takes place between 22 Mar - 23 Apr 2019.

corn Pre-School & The Mighty Oaks is a Committee run registered charity Pre-School offering Wrap Around Care with Breakfast and After School Club for Acorn Pre-School, Shefford Lower School and Robert Bloomfield Academy.

We were graded good by Ofsted in November 2017 and we are exceptionally proud of the positive feedback such as “Parents speak highly of the staff and appreciate the nurturing environment where children feel safe and secure. They feel the good education the children receive prepares them well for starting school.”

We have a highly skilled and qualified team of Early Years Practitioners who are committed to their own continuous development. Our Committee support training, valuing and encouraging new opportunities for each staff member.

In June 2018 we achieved Millie’s Mark Accreditation. Millie’s Mark is awarded as a special endorsement to childcare providers that go above and beyond the minimum requirements by having 100% of staff trained in paediatric first aid, and also ensuring that it is at the forefront of practitioners’ minds so that they are confident, ready and capable.

The team regularly share children’s development records with parents via an online journal.
