Why did parents protest at council headquarters? he Central Bedfordshire SEND Action Group was T formed in January 2020 by a group of SEND parents who were frustrated by CBC’s failures in relation to their children’s education.

The group quickly grew as parents joined together to support each other and to start taking group action to highlight CBC’s poor treatment of their children. To date, the group has 1,487 followers.

Whilst the admins of the group remain anonymous due to fears that speaking out could affect decisions made about their own children’s education, many parents share their experiences on our posts, and several have spoken on our behalf at Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny meetings.

The range of failures experienced by these families is vast but includes issues such as the shortage of specialist school places and lack of expertise in mainstream schools. CBC not meeting their statutory obligations in terms of assessment of children with special educational needs and not writing and reviewing their Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) in line with legal requirements.

Sadly, many parents have had to take CBC to tribunal in order to secure a school placement that can meet their child’s needs. This comes at great expense to the parent; despite the fact the CBC lose around 98% of appeals!

Since Ofsted and the CQC inspected CBC’s SEND service and deemed there to be many significant weaknesses, the action group has tirelessly worked to inform parents of their legal rights and support them with their individual situations. We also share regular posts to raise awareness and highlight CBC’s failures.

The formation of the group came out of necessity because individual parents were unable to stand up to the local authority alone. It was inevitable that SEND parents would eventually ‘build an army’ in order to be heard. Our posts have a reputation for being somewhat blunt - this is because in our experience, speaking directly and politely to CBC is completely ineffective!

Several opposition councillors have supported our journey over the last two years. Councillors Mark Smith (Independent) and Antonia Ryan (Labour) who both sit on the Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee, along with Independent Councillors Hayley Whitaker, John Baker and Adam Zerny who regularly speak up for us at various council meetings.

Our hope is that the protest on 7th September which was attended by many parents, grandparents, and children, will make our plight feel more REAL to the council leaders and show them that we will not let our exceptional children be cast aside and forgotten.

Halloween Spooktacular: The Dangers of Chocolate by Dr Steph Gowing With Halloween coming up, and everyone making costumes and preparing for trick or treaters, I thought I would write on the dangers of chocolate for our canine friends, as it’s likely to be more accessible to them around this time of year.

Why is chocolate toxic to dogs?

Chocolate contains theobromine which is somewhat similar to caffeine. Dogs’ bodies, unlike humans’, really struggle to break these compounds down and it can be very dangerous for them. Chocolate is also full of fat and sugar, and this, particularly when eaten in a large amount, can predispose dogs to a condition called pancreatitis.

How much is a dangerous amount?

It can be a surprisingly small amount, particularly for small dogs and puppies, even just a few squares from a bar. All foods containing chocolate pose a threat, with dark chocolate, baking chocolate and cocoa powder being the most dangerous, but your vet will be able to calculate whether a toxic dose has been consumed based on the type of chocolate and the quantity eaten.

What might I see if my dog has eaten chocolate?

Signs usually occur between four and twenty-four hours after eating chocolate. Early signs include restlessness or pacing, often with vomiting and/or diarrhoea. They may progress to more serious signs such as: • Rapid breathing and heart rate • Shaking or being unsteady on their feet • Losing consciousness or seizures • Gums changing colour to more blue/purple or red

What will the vet do to help my dog?

If you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, contact your vet immediately for advice/an urgent appointment – do not wait for signs to occur, as it is important to act quickly. The vet will take a thorough history from you and will need details of when and what your dog has eaten. It is particularly helpful if you can bring any packaging with you, but if not, it will be important for the vet to know the amount and type of chocolate consumed e.g., dark chocolate, cocoa powder/cake, and if it contained any additional substances such as raisins or alcohol liqueur. The vet will ask whether your dog is showing any unusual signs and will undertake a thorough examination, after which they will decide with you the most appropriate treatment option.

Your dog may be given medication to encourage vomiting, to bring up any chocolate left in the stomach and to stop further absorption. A substance called activated charcoal may also be given in the practice or sent home with you to give, which helps bind up anything that’s not vomited up.

In certain cases, the vet may think it necessary for your dog to be admitted for intravenous fluids or monitoring. Blood may also be taken at the time or after the initial appointment to check up on organ function, particularly the kidneys and pancreas to see if any further treatment or monitoring is needed. If they have an abnormal heart rate or seizure activity, then medication can be prescribed to help control the symptoms.

How can you prevent this?

Be careful to keep all chocolates and chocolate-containing items away from dogs. Keep in mind if they’re really determined, they can open doors or cupboards, get onto counters and open packets so be careful nothing is left where they can get it when unsupervised.

Also keep in mind that, although cats are much less inclined to eat chocolate, it is toxic to them as well if they do.

1st Arlesey Scouts were super excited to hold their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday 14th September down at the Scout Hut on Cluny Way as a way to say a huge ‘thank-you’ to our Young People, their parents and the wider Arlesey community who have supported us over the years.

It was a particularly special event as last year we weren’t able to hold our usual activity and BBQ event and were instead confined to the computer screen.

This year we had a range of fun and engaging activities including giant bubbles, camp-fire cooking, tent races, a fantastic rope bridge (constructed by our Explorers) and our famous Scouts BBQ. We encouraged everyone to dive in and have a go at everything we have to offer, and love to see new faces coming along to support us.

We also said ‘thank-you’ and fond farewell to some of our longer standing team, we said goodbye to Dave & Jacky Morton who have been with us for over 10 years in both our Beaver and Cub sections, their leaving has left some big shoes to fill, and we wish them all the best in their new roles at district. We also saw our Group Scout Leader, Chris Dodds hand to mantle to Karen Brett; Chris has been with 1st Arlesey as GSL for 7 years and has helped grow the group to record numbers seeing us add a new Beaver Colony and Cub Pack in the last few years.

We were also proud to see a number of our leaders and committee members being recognised for their contribution to the group and scouting with numerous awards handed out by Biggleswade District Commissioner Rob Pullinger.

1st Arlesey Scout Group wouldn’t be here without our volunteers and supporters, thank you for everything!

Chicken Dhansak This warming curry is perfect for a chilly autumn evening. It’s a fairly mild dish, but if you prefer something a little hotter, add a chopped red or green chilli pepper to the minced onion mixture.

Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour 20 minutes • • • • • • • • • • •

1 large onion, peeled and roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 2 tsp grated fresh root ginger 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 tbsp mild curry paste (such as Patak’s) 500g skinless chicken fillets 100g red lentils 600ml chicken stock or water 2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper Boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish (see tip), to serve • Fried onions, to garnish 16

1. Place the onion, garlic and ginger in a food processor or blender and whizz for a few seconds until finely minced.

2. Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the minced onion mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute.

3. Cut the chicken fillets into large chunks and add to the frying pan. Cook over a medium heat until no longer pink. Stir in the red lentils and stock or water. Cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally for 30-35 minutes until the chicken and lentils are tender.

4. Add the tomatoes and simmer uncovered for a further 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the tomatoes are soft. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish. Garnish with fried onions.

Tip To make the relish, simply mix together finely shredded red onion with thinly sliced cucumber, fresh chopped mint, a squeeze of lemon juice and a little salt.

Our ‘Hanging Basket Competition’ winner was Richard Kilby and we were so impressed by his garden that we decided to showcase it as this month’s Beautiful Garden of Bedfordshire. We were treated to a guided tour of his delightful and prominent garden and whilst we took photos Richard explained all…

“I gain great satisfaction in the planning, work and the results achieved which also appear to give pleasure from the conversations and comments from passers-by.

The amount of time I spend in the garden varies from day to day. Probably two hours a day 24/7. But I make sure it gets any time it needs, whatever. Dependent of course on weather.

My favourite aspect of my garden is perhaps the bedding and annual plants, so the baskets and borders are my favourites, closely followed by Roses.

I never purchase plants or flowers online as I always look for quality plants. So I support the local garden centres, where I can see the quality and the true colours I require before I buy.”

t the beginning of September, locals schools A welcomed back children from the summer, but during this first week back, Morrisons also launched “It’s Good to Grow” a programme aimed to encourage school children to get outside and get growing, helping them understand where their food comes from and how to grow their own fruit and vegetables, helping them make healthier eating choices in the future.

The programme offers our local lower schools the ability to claim for a number of different gardening products from small hand tools to shelving units, to a variety of seeds, to grow tunnels and small animal houses. But they can’t do any of that without your help.

The programme is a token-based scheme that allows our ‘My Morrisons’ customers to collect virtual Grow Tokens every time they swipe. Between 6th September until October 24th, for every £10 spent instore or online, ‘My Morrisons’ customers will collect 1 Grow Token to donate towards their chosen school.

Customers can select which school they’d like to donate to through the ‘My Morrisons’ app. Then from the 1st of November, schools can start redeeming their Grow Tokens against a wide variety of gardening equipment.

So far, we have seven local lower schools that have signed up for the programme, so please be encouraged to get involved with them and the children. If you can’t find your local school when you login on the app, this means that they haven’t registered yet, but you can register their interest at www.itsgoodtogrow. co.uk or ask the school to register so you can donate.

THE ROUTE I decided to catch the W3S service to Biggleswade. The W3S picks up at various bus stops in Stotfold, including the A507/Hitchin Road, Regent Street, The Green and then also in Astwick. The W3S then heads up the A1 and drops off at the A1 Retail Park, the town centre (bus station), Asda, and finally Sainsbury’s at the north end of town.

THE JOURNEY I jumped on the bus at Regent Street, which arrived on time at 9.46am. I paid my fare and took my ticket, but please note, if you are entitled to a bus pass then your journey is free of charge. This makes Wanderbus a fantastic way for retired people to travel to a whole host of destinations.

Our friendly driver, called Geoff, was very helpful assisting elderly passengers with their bags and walking aids. Sitting at the back of the bus (of course), I got chatting to Barry (Geoff’s mate) and Budgie, both regulars on this service. It was interesting to discover that pre-Covid, two buses were required to fulfil demand for the Biggleswade service, it is hoped that demand will return once again. Our main conversation was about the levels of new-build housing developments popping up not only in Stotfold and Biggleswade but across all of Central Beds. An impassioned conversation ensued, and I am sure we could have discussed the topic for hours.

THE DESTINATION Biggleswade has lots to see and do and has a thriving town centre, and on a lovely sunny day it was a pleasure to visit. With a host of cafes, coffee shops, pubs, and independent shops, there’s lots to see and do. I headed over to the Surfin Café, in the Market Square, and treated myself to a delicious coffee and cake, sat in the outside seating area, watching the world pass by.

Next, I popped into a wonderful DIY / Hardware store called JR Goldthorpe & Son. A delightful store with so much variety for a small shop, If you ever need those odd bits-n-bobs, you’ll almost certainly find it quicker and easier than endlessly clicking around online or trawling through a huge DIY store.

It is well worth a visit to the Church of St. Andrew, its grounds are peaceful and tranquil, and from here it is a short walk to Mill Lane where you can access the Kingfisher Way which runs along the River Ivel. It’s worth noting that it is only a short walk (1.25miles) to get to Jordan’s Mill where you can dine at the riverside café and explore the gardens.

Many passengers alighted at the A1 Retail Park, which is perfect if you fancy some retail therapy with a host of big-name stores including M&S, Next, Boots, H&M and TK Maxx plus many more. There is also the option visiting the recently opened LIDL store if you need to do a bit of grocery shopping. So, why not come and visit Biggleswade on the Wanderbus, you will have a fantastic time!

Let’s Talk About It More of us are open to the idea of seeking counselling to help us cope when life becomes complicated.

We go to the gym to feel good physically and we have massages to feel good holistically, so counselling can be thought of as a sort of ‘mind massage’, giving you the opportunity to let your words and emotions out without being judged.

The number of people accessing mental health services has risen steadily in recent years, yet not everyone will use NHS services. You might decide to go private for a number of reasons – there may be a waiting list or a lack of availability in your area, for example.

“I started off by having counselling under the NHS, but this meant I couldn’t choose my counsellor. I didn’t really get on with her, and I wasn’t able to select what type of counselling therapy she followed,” said Samantha. “I decided that it was better to go down the private route.”

Taking control of your life Counselling can help you when you’re struggling to cope, whether it’s for depression, stress and anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, drug or alcohol misuse, bereavement, sexuality issues, or post-traumatic disorder, and there are many different types of counselling therapies.

There’s no shame in seeking further help; instead of seeing it as a weakness, it can be the first step towards taking control of your life and finding new strength, especially if you feel you have nobody close to confide in.

A counsellor won’t tell you what choices to make or offer you specific advice, but they will guide you and help you understand why you may be feeling a certain way. Your first visit will give you and your therapist the opportunity to decide if you feel comfortable with each other and to talk about what you want to achieve from the sessions. Some sessions can even take place online, for example using Skype for video calls.

What makes a good counsellor?

A good counsellor should not judge or criticise you, but instead will focus on what you are saying to help you deal with your problems.

If you feel that things aren’t going the way you want them to, then you should discuss this with your counsellor to see if anything can be improved before going to a new one. Regular sessions are also a good idea so that you can start to see a difference.

All counsellors are required to have supervision and counselling themselves as part of their training.

Payments and accreditation Fees can differ depending on the experience of the counsellor and the number of sessions you commit to.

Ensure that any health professional you go with is registered and approved.

If you can’t afford private therapy, then it’s important not to try and deal with things on your own. Your GP can talk to you about other options available, as well as letting you know about free talking therapies from charities or voluntary organisations.
