o doubt you’ve heard about us, but do you know what N we do? Tucked away off Hitchin Road on one of the last remaining open green spaces in town is where you’ll find
us and the vast array of groups that already make use of the building and its grounds. The field already has numerous sports and fitness groups in regular attendance for the community to join in with and there’s still plenty of space available for families to enjoy. Kick about on the field? Happy days! Over the years we’ve been working constantly developing the inside too. Our bar areas and snooker room have been refurbished ready and waiting for you to come down and experience them. We offer a reasonable range of stock at a reasonable price served by our ever-friendly team of staff and volunteers. You really can’t get a more diverse mix of people that already use the hall. Martial arts, carpet bowls, amateur dramatics, art classes, children’s activities. We’ve got it all, and with time and space available too! If you can bring something that will benefit the community, we want to hear about it, we want to be your new home. Dominoes, darts, cribbage, pool, snooker etc. we’ve got it covered. We’re here for all residents who are looking for their new local and a place to get away from the daily grind in a relaxed friendly environment. We’ve had and are looking into regular entertainment for everyone to enjoy for a fun night out. The hall can easily accommodate any private bookings you can throw at us. Do you want your party to be big? We want it to be bigger. We can and will make sure your party is trouble free so your guests can enjoy a night out and celebrate your special occasion as a night to remember. Do you want to see our community benefit from what the STMA has to offer? So do we. Come meet one of our friendly staff and volunteers and we’ll do all we can to assist.

t the time of writing, Portugal is on the UK’s Green list, and as of 17 May they are welcoming UK travellers with a negative PCR Test. So for those who don’t know the sunny Algarve personally, let me introduce you to 4 of the most loved beaches
4 of the Algarve’s best beaches Praia da Marinha About halfway between Albufeira and Lagos, an iconic spot regarded as one of the loveliest beaches in all Europe, with stunning cliffs looming over its golden sands and hidden coves to explore at low tide. This is a great sport for snorkelling and for clifftop walks. The beach is accessed by steps down the cliffside – the reason such a gorgeous spot remains so pristine and untouristy. Praia dos Olhos de Água A generally quiet, unspoilt spot away from the crowds thanks to its setting in a fishing village just west of the resort of Oura with all its amenities. Lined by brightly painted fishermen’s huts and boats, the beach is most famous for the freshwater springs that once provided drinking water for the villagers; kids love to explore them at low tide, along with the interesting rock formations. There are a handful of restaurants on or overlooking the beach, ideal for a sunset aperitif or a dinner of fresh local seafood to round off the day.
Praia da Ma rin

Fa Praia de
Praia de Falésia Another spot familiar from a thousand and more photographs thanks to its soaring red sandstone cliffs, regularly appearing Praia da Ba in TripAdvisor lists of the very best beaches in the world. It’s so rreta vast (more than 6km long) that even in summer you can usually find your own quiet spot, yet it’s just 1km from the vibrant resort of Vilamoura with all its attractions for families and other, including a marina with boat trips and a water park. The eastern part of the Praia de Falésia is the place to head for great beach restaurants (don’t miss the local conquilhas clams, which can be collected on the beach itself) and activities – there’s paragliding, diving and a surf school. Praia da Barreta On the secluded ‘Desert Island’ reached only by a half-hour’s boat ride from the Cais da Porta Nova in Faro – one of the five barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. Ideal for those feeling a little adventurous, these 7km of unsullied sands are some of the most remote in the Algarve, with waters so crystal clear that you can see shells on the seabed. There’s nothing else on this uninhabited island but a daytime restaurant, a lighthouse and a pier – so stay for sunset if you can but make sure not to miss the last boat home!

Hi, I’m Lesley Cordell a resident of Henlow in Bedfordshire. I’m an author of illustrated books for young children and ‘Angus The Little White Fluffy Cloud Who Fell in Love With The Sun’ is available on Amazon and has 27 Five Star Reviews!
Could I Have
I accept that language evolves, and we don’t all need to speak like Hyacinth Bouquet but using ‘can I get’ as a request instead of ‘could I have’ is a pet hate of mine. Pre Covid I was sat in a cafe when I heard “Can I get no butter on my toast?” It’s just wrong! If I was a waitress and someone started a sentence with ‘can I get’ I think I might reply ‘It’s my job to get it. What would you like?’
Fireworks
They are magnificently gorgeous. But they terrify wildlife, pets and babies and are dangerous. So I think it’s about time we stopped using them to celebrate not just Guy Fawkes but all those other occasions when fireworks are now considered appropriate. When so much can be done virtually and with lasers. I think we should try and do without the risk and the bang.
Nose Picking
And finally. Nose picking. That very personal excavation that if required should be done in private out of sight and in the vicinity of a wash hand basin. Not whilst sat in your car in a queue of traffic or whilst pondering which item to select from a supermarket shelf. The picking is bad enough. But where pickers put the sample! Let’s not go there!

MAKING GOOD THINGS HAPPEN We catch up with Elliot Anderson
Community Champion Shefford Morrisons
FB@sheffordmorrisonscommunitychamp
t the beginning of April, Morrisons introduced their first A ever Customer & Community Moment. A campaign full of activities to help make a difference for the customers and communities they serve. Elliot Anderson, the Community Champion at Shefford Morrisons, has been working together with our local schools, community groups and care homes all in the name of “Making Good Things Happen”. The campaign started by implementing “Seeds of Hope” where Morrisons gave away 2.5 million packets of sunflower seeds to customers in store and community groups, with the idea to help “plant hope for a brighter future”. Locally, 8 schools, 4 community groups and 2 care homes received over 250 packets of seeds - that’s 2,500 sunflowers ready to bloom this summer! Shefford Morrisons also took the time to celebrate a “Little Sunshine” - a young person locally who has played a part in supporting the community through the pandemic. With a lovely nomination from her Mum, Vikki, 8-year-old Abigail received a hamper of goodies. What started off as a lesson in handling money, turned into Abigail kick starting a donation based glass recycling scheme in her neighbourhood which managed to raise over £150 for Magpas Air Ambulance. Not only that, but Abigail and her Mum have been out frequently litter picking around our roads and parks no matter the weather! Incredible work! Morrisons then introduced “Messages of Hope” which have been circulating around town through the form of postcards! Elliot managed to distribute 1000 postcards to customers and local school children, which were coloured in and sent out to families affected by lockdown or have been sent out to Oak Manor and New Meppershall care home to help tackle social isolation. With a plan to help support children’s literacy, Morrisons have started their very own “Little Little Library”. It works by having customers donate their unused children’s books, which will then be passed on to Shefford Lower and Robert Bloomfield Academy, who will distribute them to families in need. They can then decide to keep the book or create a sustainable book cycle by bringing it back into Shefford Morrisons and swapping it with another! Morrisons have also printed their own children’s story “Cedric the Seed” by Danielle Corrigan. Inspired by the pandemic, it’s a story of hope for a brighter future. Through Elliot’s local connections, 100 copies of the book will be donated to schools and food banks as well as being donated to our local Central Beds library! To keep up with everything community related at Morrisons, follow Elliot on Facebook @sheffordmorrisonscommunitychamp 14

REASONS TO ADD MEDITATION TO YOUR TOOLKIT OF LIFE
sohumretreats@outlook.com
fb.me/SoHumRetreatsUK
Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a cave, alone, incense sticks burning, the gentle flow of water outside and birds chirping, now open your eyes... Did you ‘feel’ it? The relaxation and calm those few moments gave you? If you did then this is what a practice of meditation can give you. As a qualified Chopra Centre Meditation Instructor, I have helped hundreds of children and adults build a meditation routine into their life schedule. Just a few minutes a day can be so impactful to enhance your day when you have your eyes open! OK, so what’s the catch? Do I have to invest in expensive equipment or travel to India? The answer to these questions is No, anyone can meditate, anywhere! It can be done completely independently or with the help and support of a meditation teacher like myself. So, let’s do it, try it once and if it’s not for you, (not everything is) that’s OK...
Make sure you are in an upright seated position (laying down the chances are you will fall asleep). Eyes, keep them closed. Deep breathes, take a few of them before you start. Internally repeat the following Soul Questions…
Who am I? What Do I want? What is my purpose? What am I grateful For? Then introduce the mantra 🕉 So Hum*, just repeating that silently for a minute or so. And then let go of the mantra (keep the eyes closed for a few more seconds.) Then slowly open your eyes. I know, so simple isn’t it? One session of meditation at the start of your day in my experience can change the direction of your day, trust me, I’ve been meditating daily for over 10 years. Never put yourself under pressure to have a certain experience, I’m not enlightened just yet. I really hope this insight can help you, or someone you know, it’s my dharma to spread this practice as it’s helped me and so many people I know to manage and navigate life, during but even before these Covid times. I’d love to hear how you got on, feedback is always important, and of course if you wish to go deeper than this introduction contact me, I’m soon to be hosting my first silent retreat locally which I’m so excited about, for now Namaste and have a good day.
Meditate to Change Your State *So Hum means ‘I am’, and a simple but effective mantra to start with 16

ELLIE’S BIG CHOP!
by Ellie Hollingsworth
Hair donation raises vital funds for the Little Princess Trust
M
y name is Ellie Hollingsworth, from Shefford, I am 19 years old, and I have just started a fundraising page for the Little Princess Trust. They are an amazing charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young people, up to 24 years, who have lost their own hair though cancer treatment or other conditions. I am fundraising to cut off a great length of my hair in June. I have always grown my hair long and over the past few years I have seen a few friends donate their hair to the trust and thought it was a wonderful idea, so now it is my time to give back. Over the past year in lockdown my hair has grown so much it is now down to my hips. The trust currently has demand for longer hair donations and so I thought there is no better way to share my love for my long hair than to donate it to less fortunate young children who have lost theirs due to cancer treatment and other conditions. Cancer is something that affects so many people, especially those closer to home and friends of friends. That’s why I’m doing my bit to help support this charity and raise greater awareness of cancer and the massive toll it has on people lives. I am due to have the big chop on 14th June, and I will be documenting it with videos and pictures to share on the Little Princess Trust’s website and social media platforms. The trust relies solely on donations and fundraisers to carry out their work supporting children and young adults, making real hair wigs, and raising awareness of cancer and research behind the disease. Therefore, I will be so grateful for any donations towards my fundraiser which all goes directly to the charity. The following link takes you to my JustGiving page for this fundraiser where donations can be made, you can also share my page to others. Alternatively you can scan the QR Code which takes you directly to my page.

Though not related to my career path, reading and writing have always been major passions. I have written a range of short stories that can be found on my author website.
Back in late 2019, an idea formed, just the basic thoughts for a couple of lead characters. From this, I started work on an idea that became my first novel, Chasing Shadows. Released on 1st April 2021, it reached the number one spot for its categories on Amazon in paperback and Kindle. My debut book made me an Amazon best seller. Throughout the lockdowns we have experienced over the last year, I have continued working on my writing including further short stories and the sequel to Chasing Shadows. One short story, ‘Coming Home’, featured in a collection of short stories. Released on the 23rd April, ‘Connections’ has also reached number one best seller status in paperback and Kindle. I have a number of paperback copies of ‘Chasing Shadows’ that can be bought directly which can be signed/personalised. A Guide For Your New Journeys
Rev. Bill Britt
As 21 June approaches, our hopes and prayers are that life can begin to return to normal again.
F
or much of the past 14 months we have lived in a sort of exile from our old way of life. We haven’t been free to do as we please, to see friends, to meet up in a pub or a restaurant, to go shopping or to travel on an aeroplane for a foreign holiday or to visit family abroad. The pandemic has also caused deep pain: loved ones have died; funerals have been restricted; our physical and mental health have in many cases suffered and there has been some terrible impacts on jobs and education. However, this enforced exile within our own homes has been an opportunity to reflect on how we lived our lives before the lockdown. As we emerge from exile, we should reflect on the experiences we have had during lockdown and what we have learned from them. We might decide as a result we want to spend more time with friends and families, continue to help our isolated neighbours, to buy less stuff, and to reflect more carefully on how we travel. The Bible gives us a good example of a people returning from exile and stopping to think before they re-started life at home again. As the Old Testament records, Moses led the Israelites out of slavery under Pharaoh in Egypt. But he didn’t lead them directly into the Promised Land. Instead, they spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness to learn some lessons: those lessons were that God was always with them and that they were utterly dependent on God, rather than on Pharaoh, for the necessities of life such as water and bread from heaven. For us, too, this pandemic has been a reminder that we don’t have total control over our own lives. It was during this wilderness exile that God gave the people the Ten Commandments as a guide to living in harmony with God and with one another in the Promised Land. I believe the Ten Commandments, which can be found in Exodus Chapter 20 Verses 1–17, are still a good roadmap. Like the rest of Scripture, the Ten Commandments need to be interpreted. We do this by looking at other sections of the Bible, particularly the words Jesus said and the actions he took during his earthly ministry. Jesus taught that the greatest Commandment is to love: to love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself. A good guide is Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which is found in Matthew Chapter 5 Verses 1-12. 22

Here, in what we call “The Beatitudes”, Jesus gives a new vision of a world that is shaped by love. For instance, he said “blessed are those who mourn”. Just as Jesus wept when his friend Lazarus died, he also cried at the injustice he saw in the world. We will be blessed if we, too, cry out in sadness to God for the injustices and sorrows of the world, such as families relying on food banks, plastic waste choking our oceans or human trafficking. But we must let that sadness drive us to action. In the last few weeks of restrictions, can I suggest you read the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, reflect on what you’ve learned during lockdown and then write down some personal priorities to guide your living as you begin this new chapter.

DELIVERY BOYS’ REVIEW by John McBurney & Andrew Martin
We check out the local restaurants & eateries Onto the eating… The Evin Burger can only be described as magnificent both in size and taste. The burgers are succulent and tasty, and are perfectly complimented with the toasted bun, cheese, salad and ketchup. Hygiene rating of 5. Onto the food… After a quick look at the extensive menu board upon the wall, John decided to go for the ‘Combination Kebab’, a mixed two meat kebab, opting for chicken shish and doner. Andrew ordered the mighty ‘Evin Burger’, which consists of an astounding three ¼ pound burgers with three slices of cheese. The food was expertly cooked in front of us over a flame grill, the aromas coming over the counter simply mouth-watering. Before your food is wrapped, you get to choose your ‘extras’ from the fresh array of salad & pickles (John opting for everything) and the wide range of sauces (chilli and garlic mayo our choice), we also ordered some french fries and soft drinks. With our takeaway securely wrapped and bagged we headed off so we could tuck-in. 24

ing able to undertake more fully all the great activities we’re known for. Nevertheless, our Scouters (Beavers through to Scouts) achieved lots through Lockdown including… • Badges such as, Cooking, Digital Citizens, Health and Fitness, Global Issues, Environment, Arts, and Safety. • Achieving the Chief Awards is a big achievement for our Beavers; Catherine, Ben, Ross, Freya, Noah, Toby for Bronze, and Hayden & Matthis in Cubs achieved Silver! • Raising money for charity: Ross who raised money for The Need Project through a bike ride, and William & Oliver who ran a marathon in 14 days during COVID to raise money for the NHS. • Hike to the Moon, a challenge across all ages getting us out and about with all proceeds raised going to Children in Need and Comic Relief.

• Litter Picking in the community for the Wombles event. • Virtual camp fires and camping; Summer Challenges and more. However none of this can happen without Leaders, and we NEVER have enough of them. We have a long waiting list which we’d love to welcome to Scouting, but we just don’t have enough Adult Helpers. We have a strong and friendly ‘core team in uniform’ which would welcome with open arms more Leaders, Assistant Leaders and Helpers. The reality is, if you’re new to Scouting you won’t be asked to Lead first off so don’t be scared! It’ll be a gradual process of mutual support to keep Scouting in Fairfield exciting.
