We check out the local restaurants & eateries Most importantly, the haddock was cooked just right, perfectly fried with crispy batter, the fish itself was nice and moist with just the right amount of flakiness. I was hugely impressed.

The meal also came with a buttered bread roll, just in case you fancied a chip butty.

The Steak & Ale Pie can only be described as a proper, traditional pie. Square in shape, thickcrust pastry, cooked to perfection and inside there was a rich filling with chunky pieces of melt-in-the-mouth steak, splendidly complemented with the chips, peas and gravy sauce.

Collection was quick and easy, efficient and seamless. The pick-up area is at the back of the pub, lots of space, so very easy to maintain covid-safe distances. We waited all of 2 mins and our food was brought out to us in a nice, posh paper fish & chip bag. Once home, the food was still hot, each meal very well presented in its own box.

Onto the eating… the meals were delicious!

The fish was huge and tasted amazing, faultless in every way, and came with perfect chips.

ntil Boris finally announces that we can all travel abroad this summer, many of us will feel more comfortable with a UK holiday this year. Going abroad may involve testing, filling in of extra forms, and for some people they would just rather wait until next year, 2022.

Staycations are absolutely booming right now and availability on key summer dates is already scarce.

My 4 Top Ideas for a UK Staycation 1) Boating the Norfolk Broads

Head for Norfolk with your favourite people and shop in the cute town of Wroxham for your captain’s hat and fancy food and drink to take on board your chosen pre-booked boat. Sail for 3, 4 or 7 nights on anything from a 2-berth wooden boat to a massive 11 berth cruiser! You will receive tuition before you leave your mooring and then its off you go for a relaxing, and very pretty few days on the Broads. Wave at the other boats, mind the fishing rods, choose a Broad and moor up for the evening. There will likely be a great pub, a village green, ice cream shops or just amazing country walks to enjoy.

2) Brighton and Surrounding Area

For me Brighton Pier is pure happiness. The arcades, rides, and award-winning fish and chips are all just good old fashioned British seaside fun. If you have kids, the wristband is great value and they will spend hours on the rides.

Shopping in the Laines is a lovely experience with lots of unique shops, and the bars! The bars are full of life… even when we visited last October during the pandemic the atmosphere was electric. Slightly further out you have glamorous Hove, or Shoreham for a quieter beach and many other lovely towns along the coast to visit.

3) For big groups, we can book your stay in the childhood home of Florence Nightingale.

Near Derby, Lea Hall oozes Victorian opulence and grandeur. With open fires and wood burning stoves, extensive 4-acre gardens, it sleeps 20 in 10 ensuite bedrooms. Perfect for gathering the extended family together for long dinners and a garden party after June 21st. Let’s hope!

4) If you love to be active and get your steps in, why not walk Hadrian’s Wall.

Bad Parkers

Every day in every town we witness a myriad of vehicles badly parked on pavements or grass verges causing annoyance to other members of society.

Pavements are not designed to carry the weight of heavy vehicles and the surface is easily damaged, so it becomes uncomfortable for its intended users to travel along, also they are often forced dangerously on to the road to avoid the obstruction. Verges become unsightly and difficult to maintain in reasonable condition. If those drivers in their metal “cocoons” considered others more, our surroundings would be so much more pleasant for all.

Fly Tippers & Litter Louts

I put both of these into the same category of selfish and inconsiderate individuals giving no care to the damage they cause to our surrounding or the environment. We live at a moment in time where our population are supposedly well educated and constantly made aware of the dangers to our planet from discarded waste of all kinds, yet a proportion consider it is up to “someone else” to clear up their rubbish for them. We all have access to large wheelie bins at home and litter bins spread around the town, please use them!

Annoyance Calls

Despite using the “call blocker” system on my telephone(s), I cannot be alone in constantly receiving calls informing me that; vast sums of money are being milked from my ‘Amazon Prime’ account (which I do not have), the warranty on my 15 year old washing machine can still be extended, I have been identified as having inadequate lagging in my loft space etc. I have no idea what the solution is but wish, in these days of such clever high technology, some enterprising company would find an answer - that’s something I would be prepared to subscribe to!

Local farm shop gets a refit

D

ean and Katie have been at Lower Wilbury Farm for 5 and a half years, in that time the shop has gone from strength to strength and is now open every Thursday to Saturday 9am till 4:30pm and Sundays 10am till 1pm.

The shop has recently undergone a refit and expansion to allow them to expand the product range and meats on display, with this they have employed Andy as a full-time butcher and he is looking forward to meeting and getting to know all the customers.

A high level of animal welfare is a top priority with zero antibiotics used to produce our top quality slow grown meat. The Beef, pork and lamb is reared on the farm, the beef is Traditional Herefords and reared out on grass until 30 months and then hung for a minimum of 21 days to increase flavour. The lambs are all grass-fed and reared organically. The pork is rare-breed and outdoor reared to increase maximum flavour.

Fresh fruit and vegetables, free range eggs, jams, chutneys, oils, mayos and sauces are also available.

A

ll the Zoom classes now run very smoothly and some clients have indicated a preference to continue online after lockdown, as actually, in some cases it suits their lives better.

Although Zoom classes are not quite the same as real life classes, I still keep the classes small, and if everyone is able to direct their camera to their exercise mat I am able to give feedback, support and advice for each person, for every exercise. I now have a second, larger, monitor positioned so that I can see every participant clearly. Pilates is very much about exercise technique, working with optimal posture and alignment in order to achieve maximum benefit. It’s been important to continue online classes, with the same attention to detail.

In these potentially more sedentary times, with the added worry of coming into contact with the virus, it has become even more vital that we take time to look after both our physical and mental health and fitness.

Pilates classes on Zoom provide a means to help keep our muscles strong and flexible, all our joints moving well, and above all improve posture. Our posture and our joints definitely do suffer with prolonged sitting! When the body is moving well in good posture, there is far less risk of joint problems, back pain or injury.

We shouldn’t forget the importance of taking time out for ourselves, the focus and concentration required while doing Pilates provides a real and rare retreat from new and on-going challenges.

Client feedback is so encouraging and I think we have all benefitted from seeing all those faces on screen and having a brief chat as usual before the class and at the end, giving a real sense of the social aspect which we enjoyed before the pandemic. I have also been able to welcome ex-attendees back who have moved away, people have joined in from Dorset, Norfolk, Scotland, Ireland and even the other Melbourne… Australia!

Those who have chosen not to join in online, we miss you all and think of you each week. I look forward to when we can all meet as we did before. A timetable with a choice of both Zoom and face-to-face hall classes will be introduced, just as soon as it is permitted and can be done safely.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support and encouragement.

BECKY AND KIKI’S LUNA DASH Running companions hit the trails in a bid to run 12 marathons!

Becky Smith, from Arlesey, and her four-legged friend, Kiki, have pledged to run 12 marathons in 12 months and to complete 2021 kilometres in 2021. The running duo are tackling this huge challenge as part of their continued fundraising for Luna Animal Rescue.

The effects of the Covid crisis and the lockdown rules and restrictions have made it a difficult year for charities as their scope for fund-raising activities has been severely affected.

Becky said, “I took up running about 3 years ago and I have been running with Kiki for 18 months.

Due to Covid rules we can’t have any support team during our marathon runs so I have to carry everything I need including water, food, clothing, first aid kit etc. In an organised running event there would normally be stations but we have had to improvise. I try and plan it so that there are a few water/river stops.”

“Running with a dog does have its challenges, for me, managing energy and fluids, not slipping in the mud, especially down-hill when the dog pulls you! In the summer the heat is difficult for Kiki, also, getting enough food and water as you can’t give her a big meal before exercise. During the summer heat we will be leaving very early. Kiki is amazing and seems to fair better than me, she would happily keep going and the next day it is like she hasn’t done anything.

Kiki is a Luna dog who was rehomed through this wonderful animal rescue charity, along with her sister. Through no fault of their own, like so many animals that find themselves in rescue every year, they ended up in the care of Luna having been given up by their first family.”

Becky is not only committed to fundraising and completing the running challenges, she is also a devoted fosterer for Luna, giving up hours of her time caring for all the animals that come their way.

The running pair have completed two marathons already, and as this magazine went to print, Becky and Kiki were about to start their 3rd marathon (Friday 12th March). We wish them all the very best of luck with their valiant efforts and we hope to bring you further updates on their progress throughout the year.

ill we have completed Step 4 successfully and be back to anything resembling ‘old normal’ by the end of September this year?

It certainly looks likely - the Government Road Map says that ‘not before 21 June - we hope to be in a position to remove all legal limits on social contact’. We can then hope that our Festival should be able to run and in the words of one community notable “we all need to work together to bring the local area back to its former glory”.

Indeed, the success of last year’s Garage Sale Trail and Scarecrow Festival point the way!

I have already had enquiries about participating in the Festival and have spoken to many people who asked about the Festival in general - so this is clearly the right time to consider your event. As we move closer to the summer, things will become clearer, and while it is likely that we will still have some sort of guidance in place – like wearing masks and social distancing coupled with hand sanitising - these should leave plenty of room to make sensible arrangements for most types of events.

So, if you have an idea – especially for something outdoors with plenty of space – or perhaps indoor events that can work with small numbers at any one time - then now is the time to notify us so we can start to put a program together and to promote it. Off the top of my head I am thinking about outdoor health activities in parks or gardens, otherwise groups or special ‘Community Festival’ events in pub gardens perhaps?

We have all learned a lot about good Covid security in the past twelve months so it is surely time to kick start our thinking and to release that pent up community spirit – the first step is to let me know your ideas!

as Parmar, a longstanding Clifton resident and Postmaster is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the 2021 Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections in Bedfordshire.

Police experience - He has served as a Police Officer in the Metropolitan Police and is currently a member of Independent Advisory Group (IAG) to Bedfordshire Police.

Local experience - He has lived in Clifton with his family for over 33 years. He was a local Postmaster in the village and has owned several other public facing businesses in Bedford and Kempston.

Public service - He is a former Bedford Borough Councillor and until last year was a Non-Executive Director of East London Foundation Trust, an NHS provider covering Mental Health issues in Bedfordshire and Luton. For the past 10 years, he has been the founder and Chairman of a Business forum in Bedfordshire, mentoring, supporting and advising over 150 members. He has raised several thousand £s for local and national charities including Bedford Food Bank, St Johns Special School Kempston, Bedford Hospital, DKMS and MacMillan Cancer Support.

• Expanding Community Policing and Police presence – To restore public confidence and have mobile Police stations in rural and urban areas to increase Police visibility and accessibility. Expand on Neighbourhood policing to deal with anti-social behaviour and speeding matters.

• Put Victims First – Supporting victims of crime and placing them at the heart of the Police priorities and plans.

• Gun, County lines and youth crime – Deal with the crime and source of crime. Connect with the young at school and community centres to keep them away from gang culture and have a MultiAgency approach to deal with the sources of crime.

• Engaging with the local Communities - will be open, transparent and accessible.

Jas said “I am local and understand the issues faced by our residents both in rural and urban Bedfordshire. If elected, I will use my experience and knowledge to make Bedfordshire a safer place to live and work and ensure that the public has a voice “.

Margaret’s walks Keeping fit during lockdown

Margaret’s Walks was compiled by a local walking group made up of a few friends, including Margaret.

Margaret & Bill

Now 87, Margaret has been exploring the local Bedfordshire countryside for many years. The walks take you across countryside, by rivers and streams, woods and hills, plus interesting buildings, villages and streets.

Walk Number 1. Barton Hills, Barton-Le-Clay (about 4 miles) Park by St. Nicholas Church, Barton.

Turn left at the end of the road when there is a signpost – Public Bridleway Chiltern Extension. Follow path with a horse field to the right, and then a farmer’s field. When you see a sign Welcome to Barton Hills, go through the gate. Follow the path up a steep hill and up two sets of steps towards the top of the hill.

Go up steps through gate and turn left. Follow path over the hills with a deep valley on the right. Carry on through a gate and continue walking along top of hill with wire fence to the left. The path curves round at the top.

Go through a gate into the woods.

Bear right past the sign Welcome to Barton Hills. Carry on down path through woods and turn right at first junction. Go through a small meadow and onto a track. Turn left down to a glade and the little stream (Dogs will enjoy it).
