NOTE FROM THE EDITOrS A warm welcome to the 10th edition of LivingLife magazine. It’s exciting to see our magazine go from strength to strength! Our aim is to produce a magazine that is focused on the local area providing content that is interesting, relevant and fun and we are encouraged by the positive feedback we receive from both readers and advertisers.

As we stride into September, the summer holidays will be coming to an end and children will be returning to school.

Cycling is good for the environment, good for your wallet and info@tycotravel.com good for you. Over the last few years the number of people that are cycling has increased with events, recreation and city transportation driving the trend. The thing about cycling is that it can become a journey that often leaves people asking, “What next?”. From getting on your first bike to commute across town or entering a big event to challenging yourself and raising money for charity, to watching the Tour de France and wishing you could ride on those big mountains, as we cycle more, our dreams get bigger. As the number of people taking part in cycling has grown, cycling tour operators have started offering a whole range of cycling holidays to meet this ever-growing interest. There are many different types of cycling travel experiences from riding a bucket list alpine climb to off-road mountain bike adventures and leisure holidays which can include luxury experiences including Michelin starred restaurants or visits to vineyards.

Below are some of our favourite cycling holiday locations.

Yorkshire

The home of road cycling in the UK has to be Yorkshire. It was the base for the start of the 2014 Tour de France, and due to it’s amazing hills, quiet roads and spectacular views, it will again invite the world’s best road cyclists in 2019 as it hosts the UCI World Championships.

Wales

If you want to test yourself on some off-road downhill trails, head to Bike Park Wales in Merthyr Tydfil to experience the UK’s first full scale mountain bike park in the heart of the South Wales valleys, built by riders for riders.

Provence, France

Vaucluse is considered to be the heart of Provence. This hilly area surrounded by many mountains and of course Mont Ventoux, is a cycling paradise offering a wide range of high-quality rides. The area is well known for the quality of its food and wine and the charming villages, which are often perched on hillsides in this beautiful cycling location. The best time to visit and discover Provence at its best is from April to October.

Mallorca

Mallorca offers the perfect conditions for cycling, quiet roads, great climate, excellent infrastructure and it’s only 2½ hours flight from the UK. Over 700km of quiet ‘B’ roads connect the many towns of Mallorca and provide easy access to the Tramuntana mountain range as well as to a wide range of hotels and restaurants. It’s no wonder that it has become such a draw for the many professional cycling teams and amateurs alike.

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is a unique place, where the rugged and wild beauty of the mountain views are matched only by the soothing sunsets over the glistening Mediterranean.

A trip to Sicily is an experience to be enjoyed with all the senses, immersed in a wonderful setting, among breathtaking landscapes, art, history and Mediterranean flavours. It is amongst this backdrop, that the island invites you to experience an unforgettable cycling holiday.

DEVON - A GREAT PLACE FOR ALL TH T

he journey to Devon is nice with lots to see once you get off the M25 and onto the A303, you hav bury Plain and then you eventually get to the winding, hilly Devon roads with wonderful centre took about 5 hours after a short stop for a cup of coffee and a sandwich.

On our first day out we drove into Dawlish, it is a beautiful town and has a park which starts near black swans on it. They have been nesting at Dawlish for years and are stunning to see. After a good night’s sleep, we decided to go to Torquay for the day, we found a good parking spot a and sizes, it also had an awful lot of barrel jellyfish in the bay, which are huge things but their sting at the end of the bay and had huge netting over it and we were not sure why until we went in and s have volunteers who help people with recognition and information about the centre which support who were too injured have a safe place to live where they are well fed in a pleasant environment. Brixham has a lovely small harbour which is full of fishing vessels and even an old pirate ship to ente we sat outside the Crown & Anchor pub and enjoyed a cold drink and got into conversation with a fish & chip shop next door was amazing, so we ordered haddock, chips, mushy peas and gravy, a firs it was really nice and is worth a visit.

The following day we headed off to Dartmouth to a National Trust house called Greenways, which h parking via telephone because it gets very busy, so we rang ahead and made the most of our waitin in itself is a nice little cruise over the water. In Dartmouth there were quite a few people fishing for the River Dart which meanders through Dartmouth to the sea.

What does Brexit mean for your EHIC card?

“What about the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?”, some may ask. “It is currently thought that the EHIC will not be valid post-Brexit,”. The government is seeking agreements with those countries with healthcare arrangements for UK nationals after Brexit; however, nothing is yet in place. “To protect yourself, ensure that any travel insurance policy you buy doesn’t insist that you use your EHIC card for emergency medical treatment”.

Passports It’s important to check the validity of your passport. Check that your passport is valid for your planned trip.

Passports are only valid for 10 years from their date of issue. To return to the UK, you should have a minimum of 6 months validity on your passport on your date of return. This does not include any extra months added on by your early renewal.

44 YEARS OF CREATIVITY IN SHEFFORD

In 1975 a group of enthusiastic local artists founded The Shefford Art Society. Since then the society has experienced mixed fortunes and over the 44 years a few changes have been made. We now meet every Tuesday at 1.15-3.15pm at the Shefford Community Hall (next to the fish and chip shop) on the High Street in Shefford.

We are a very welcoming group with members of all abilities, some have been painting for years, others have only just started. We use all mediums and have demonstrators to encourage and inspire us. We also have a small library including DVDs, plus materials to borrow and try before committing to buy.

We are currently working towards our Exhibition in the Community Hall on 28-29th September which has free entry, with paintings from local artists on sale, and refreshments also available.

Members of our society pay an annual subscription of just £18 per year. The weekly session on a Tuesday costs £1.50, visitors are £2.00 (free on first visit). For demonstrations members pay £2.00, visitors £4.00.

Upcoming demonstrations are as follows: -17th September Stanley Hurr will be demonstrating pastels.

-5th November David Hyde will be demonstrating watercolour.

If I had known the two brothers were so competitive and lived to outdo the other in all aspects of their lives I just would not have advised them on their investments! The brothers inherited £5,000 each and wanted to invest their money. The elder brother put his full £5000 into a Unit Trust fund all on one day in 1985. Gévaudan

are a four-piece Herts based doom metal band. They combine crushing, grooving riffs with tales of legend and woe. With influences firmly in the traditional end of the doom metal genre, they have been cited by Terrorizer Magazine as “one of the country’s most interesting doom bands”.

A balanced blend of story-telling, heavy riffs, Iommi-esque solos and dynamic song writing mean the band continue to carve their own unique niche within the genre.

The band formed through 2013 with a desire to write heavy original music, the band comprises of Adam Pirmohamed (Vox), Bruce Hamilton, (Guitar), Andy Salt (Bass) and David Himbury (Drums). The band give a thunderous live delivery, taking their pound of flesh from their audiences by the time they reach the end of their set.

1. How did you meet?

On the fence. Both are fun - we’ve just recorded our debut album (out later this year) which was a great experience and we learn every time we go into a studio. Gigging though is great, really bringing the music to life and when you have an audience engaging with the riffs and melodies it’s a really great thing.

n Friday 13th September the Shefford Community Hall Trustees will be unveiling a bench in memory of Lewis Birt who, as first chairman of the Hall Trustees, invested a great deal of his time and energy in saving the hall from the bulldozers and upgrading the facility. Lewis was a pillar of our community, being for many years one of Shefford’s district councillors and a spearhead of the Town Centre Christmas lights team.

This unveiling will be followed by the Hall’s Annual General Meeting.

The Hall is for the benefit of all Shefford residents so please come along to the hall (next to the fish & chip shop), join us for wine and cheese and have your say about how the hall is run.

Arrive at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start.

Artisans in the Yard

FB@Artisansintheyard Artisans In The Yard is now showing work by Roger Davies, a sculptor designer whose art is made from recycled metals and fashioned mainly into woodland animals and birds.

Roger recently exhibited at the annual Patchings Art Festival in Nottinghamshire, where his displays of swallows fascinated Annette Glenn enough for her to invite him to display his work at the Artisans In The Yard gallery in Shefford. Roger’s other exhibits include owls, magpies and wrens mounted on shaped aluminium rods relating to their natural surroundings, which make them even more lovable.

He is perhaps best known for his much larger creations, such as life size stags and herons which would enhance any garden or park!

Roger’s art has attracted both public and private commissions in his home town of Burton on Trent, and his work is on view in the gallery until 30th September.

Welcome to our monthly feature: ’Kid’s Got Talent’ The place where we showcase the amazing talents of local children.

We hope this will help motivate and inspire other children to discover new sports and hobbies.

Name: sarah pepper age: 12 from: shefford Q. Briefly explain your talents.

I play several musical instruments and belong to a stage school that puts on performances every year. I love to perform because it builds my confidence each time and makes me feel special and a part of something. This, I have loved since I was really young.

Q. Which musical instruments do you play?

I play the Clarinet, Piano, Saxophone and I sing. I also play varieties of the Clarinet, such as the alto clarinet. I am grade 5 in piano, clarinet and singing. I also play the recorder and I like playing chords on the ukulele and strum along to my favourite songs. I hope to learn some other musical instruments in the future!

Q. Which instrument is your favourite?

I love all of my instruments. They each mean something special to me. The clarinet was the first real instrument that I learned to play, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. The piano is something that I can express myself fully on and I feel I am in a special place when I am singing. I also love the sound of the Saxophone. But I think I love the piano the most.

Q. Are you part of a band or in a club?

Unfortunately, the band I used to play for - Shefford Town Band - recently shut down, but I do play in the first orchestra, the wind band and the choir at my school. I have attended Mad Hatters Theatre School in Shefford for 6 years. Mad Hatters is my favourite thing in the world.

I have been going there for over 6 years and it means so much to me. I have learnt things I couldn’t have possibly learnt elsewhere, I just really love it.

Q. When do you practice, with who and for how long?

I try to practice at home, but it is quite hard when most of your family also needs to practice and all you can hear is the sound of your brother trying to play the oboe in the next room! I usually do my practice at school in the music practice rooms before school starts. My mum says I need to do more practice!

Q. Who is your favourite singer or musician?

I don’t really have a favourite singer, I like lots of different songs, mainly from musical theatre.

The one person who inspires me the most is Lin Manuel Miranda. He wrote the musicals ‘Hamilton’ and ‘In the Heights’. He also wrote the score for ‘Moana’ and has performed as Alexander Hamilton and as Jack in Mary Poppins Returns.

Q. What are your goals/dreams/visions?

My goal is to one day perform on the West End in musical theatre and meet my heroes, and some day, to be like them.

Q. Do you ever perform in shows or won any competitions?

For the last two years I have competed in a National Piano competition called EPTA. Last year, I got into the finals in London and got to play on a gorgeous piano. Unfortunately, I didn’t win, but it was an experience of a lifetime and I’m definitely competing again next year! Over the last 7 years, I have had roles in over 20, mainly musicals. I have played Tessie In Annie, Sarah Brown in Guys ‘n’ dolls, Mr Warbucks in Annie, the Caterpillar and Alice in Alice in Wonderland, and most recently Badger in Wind in the Willows.

Q. Any advice or tips for anyone who wants to write a book, play an instrument or sing?

I have two pieces of advice to anyone who wants to do any of these things: don’t give up, so many people get overwhelmed with school work and quit because they think they can’t balance two things at once. But you can do it! The next one is to stand out and be yourself and sing, write or play music from how you feel on the inside.
