hether you like it or not, the world is evolving and it was only a matter of time before our homes turned technical. The term ‘smart home’ has been penned, describing a place filled with Wi-Fi controlled gadgets and soon you’ll be able to control everything from your smartphone.

As with any modern gadget, they can appear almost space-like but there are a number of smart home appliances that can be integrated in your home with ease. Home tech is better than ever and ultimately changing the way we live so why not invite them into your house this month? Nest Smoke Detector. This smoke detector has an industrial style smoke sensor, can be silenced from your phone, tests itself automatically and lasts for up to 10 years. What’s more, it also makes you aware of any problems and alerts your phone. Phillips Hue Starter Kit. Control the atmosphere of your room with your phone. Change the lighting colour, control 50 bulbs on one app and sync them with other gadgets. Fancy flashing lights when you get a text message? Electric Window Blinds. Remote control your window fittings and with some systems, automate when you would like them open and closed. Nest Thermostat. Slash your energy bill and boost your smart home with this thermostat. This device learns how you like your home and adjusts the heat accordingly as well as being controlled through your phone. Smart Garage Door Opener. This handy gadget turns your phone into a transmitter for your garage door or gate. Receiving signals from your phone your chosen gate or door will open and close quickly and safely. 360 Smart Bed. Not yet released, this bed will change the way you sleep. Ensuring you get a great nights sleep, the latest addition to smart home gadgets adjusts to body positions, tracks sleeping habits, wakes you up at the optimum time and can also detect snoring raising your head to clear your airwaves. We want one! It may take some time getting used to all of the gadgets available but there’s no denying that once accepted into the family home, they can upgrade living in ways that have never been seen and for 2019, a smart home is the only home you need. 6

Living in Clifton Park

by John McBurney

‘I could never go back to bricks and mortar’

L

ast month we paid a visit to Clifton Park, a park home estate on New Road on the outskirts of Clifton Village. Our mission: to find out exactly what it’s like to live there. Actually, we do visit the park on a monthly basis as part of the magazine delivery, but we are always in such a hurry that we never find time to stop and chat to the residents. However, on this occasion we thought we would drop in and say ‘Hello’. The site is beautiful. It’s clean and tidy, and very pretty with an array of ornate gardens and intricately designed patios with decorative items and a range of coloured gravel. The site has grown in size recently, with the addition of the new development area where plots are available to purchase. So, what is it like living in Clifton Park? Well, we caught up with some of the residents to find out…

Adrian & Trish Adrian & Trish have lived on Clifton Park for just 7 weeks after recently moving from Northill and already they love the place. They moved into one of the park homes located on the new development site. “We love it! It’s quiet and peaceful and the people living here are so friendly and sociable.” In terms of location, Clifton Park is ideal for the couple. Trish is now closer to friends and family who live in Clifton Village and Shefford. The couple both work locally Trish works in Morrisons in Shefford and Adrian is a minibus driver at a local school. “We have wanted to live here for ages, and moving in is like a dream come true. It’s the perfect retirement home for us.”

8

Sylvia & Jim Sylvia & Jim moved to Clifton Park almost 18 years ago. Their home is sited on the first block of 12 park homes that were built on the site some 25 years ago. Asked why they like living here, Syvlia replied, “I could never go back to bricks and mortar. Honestly, we have never been happier.” She added, “It’s very peaceful and we have great neighbours, very friendly and everyone helps each other out.” Jim described how they help out with their neighbours, “One of our neighbours, who is 93, we keep an eye on him and help him out. We give him lifts to the hospital and to the doctors. We also give each other lifts to the airport when our neighbours or ourselves go away on holiday. It’s such a helpful community, people look after each other.”

Advertising deadline for July - 10th June- visit www.livinglifemagazine.co.uk

We also spoke to Denise & Adrian who moved to Clifton Park just under a year ago relocating from Stondon. What attracted you to the Park? “We wanted to downsize and my husband’s mother lived on the site so we already knew what the site was like. It was the ideal opportunity to get the perfect retirement home.” “It’s lovely and quiet here, hardly any traffic and definitely no through traffic. Occasionally it can get a little windy on the new development site as it is the top of a hill and quite open. You have to be over 55 to live here, but it appeals so much because residents are safe and have a feeling of well being, especially for the older residents. We could have gone for a traditional bungalow, perhaps a new build but we didn’t want to be surrounded by new homes. I love it here, although you do have to think carefully about moving to Clifton Park as it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.” What sort of amenities do you have available on the site? “Once a week, on a Friday, the fish & Chip van arrives. Also, the Wanderbus arrives everyday, taking passengers to places like Bedford, Milton Keynes and Welwyn Garden City. It has a different destination everyday, the bus stop can be found at the bottom of the park.”

Prospective purchasers can be put off by loud colours and lurid wallpaper. Aim for something modern but neutral. Buyers love wood burning stoves because they are a good focal point and make living rooms warm and cosy. You don’t necessarily need to have a chimney, just an outside wall. If you do have a chimney, it’s advisable to get a flue liner installed to avoid the risk of harmful gases escaping into your house. The key is to get advice from a qualified professional installer. 5. New Driveway With so many households now having two or more cars, parking is a big issue. In many places, on-street parking is at a premium and the days of a guaranteed spot outside your house are long gone. As a result, off-road parking has become a major selling point. If you don’t already have a drive, converting your front garden could be a good move. It is an offence to drive across the pavement so you will need a dropped kerb. If you don’t have one already, your local the council can install one for a fee. Check what their requirements are for driveways. You may have to use a material that lets water seep away rather than running straight off into the road.

ach year on World Tai Chi day we throw open the Community Hall to local practitioners of martial arts and alternative health activities – so this year we had a gentle Tai Chi loosening at 10.00 to get us all in the mood. Ian Deavin (chief instructor of Shefford Tai Chi) took the group through some normal class exercises aimed at developing good posture and balance for people of all ages. This was followed by a very interesting session of Yoga led by local teacher Laura Johnson who took everybody through a typical class. At 11.00 Eileen Johnson gave a wonderful hands on seminar of Alexander Technique focusing on relaxed posture and ease of movement which had many people feeling as if walking on air. Alexander Technique is an intervention much valued for dealing with back problems and balance. The pace stepped up at 11.30 with Ataru Shotokan Karate under Sensei Jamie Thomson and his wife Tracii – an enthusiastic group demo and participatory session with many youngsters, followed at 12.00 by Ian Deavin with a graceful Tai Chi demo of the Chen style Laojia form and Sword form. 12.30 saw us involved with ENSO Jujitsu under Lee Alexander Sensei for another interactive session including more young people, followed by an exquisite demonstration of Iado – Japanese sword drawing by Lee Alexander Sensei. Ian Deavin followed with more Tai Chi showing how Tai Chi may be practiced in small soft movements suitable for people of all ages interested in developing better balance and healthy movement – as well as how it may be done with bigger faster movements for the younger or more martially inclined. By 2.00 when we had all had our lunch we were in the hands of the William Wong Wing Chun Academy under chief instructor William Wong and his wife Yvoone who led us through their style - and then by popular request William took enthusiastic leadership of a fully interactive all styles self defence partner training session, followed by a similar session with Sensei Thomson which pretty much took us through to the end of the day. Ian rounded off the event by having a Tai Chi discussion with visitors while the demonstration area was taken up by martial artists playing and having fun in a mixed styles practice.

If you run a martial arts or alternative therapy activity and would like to join us next year – or would like to know more about Tai Chi please contact Ian on the number above 20

The Ups and Downs of Investments - Part 2 Last month I promised to ask my one time financial adviser friend how it was that he so often bucked the trend in the history of his years of giving advice. You see it is a matter of record that every time the markets fell over the past 20 years his advice meant his clients investments rose in value instead of down! Sitting with him now face to face I asked him how do you do it? “Ah well, you see, I was born in 1943 and technically died on arrival at under 2llbs in weight! My life was saved by a wonderful nurse who had many years in the nursing profession. Her years of experience, inner knowledge, and intuition cried out there was still life in that tiny body – so here I am today! You see, my saviour nurse was not cowed down by the powerful doctor’s routine advice or her exam passing knowledge – her years of nursing and experience had built up a knowledge of just ‘knowing’ I apply the same just ‘knowing’ with money and invest with conviction against the recognised trend. His eyes twinkled “next time we meet I’ll tell you where my conviction says your money should be right now” Funny that – when I walked away from the mirror my friend suddenly disappeared! If you have questions that you need answered to do with savings and investments you can contact Robert at harrisfinancialfriend@gmail.com Robert’s job is not to give financial advice but to use simple explanations that help you along the way

Welcome to our brand new monthly feature: ’Kid’s Got Talent’ The place where we showcase the amazing talents of local children. We hope this will help motivate and inspire other children to discover new sports and hobbies.

Name: Charlie Flynn Age: 14 from: Shefford Q. Briefly explain your talent? I’m a karting driver, racing in Jr TKM(kart class) in the 2019 British championship. Q. So how did you get involved in karting? My dad took me to a kart track when I was aged six. I tried it and instantly fell in love with the sport. My dad kept taking me until he got me my very own kart. Q. When do you practice, where and for how long? We do a race meeting for practice before each British championship round. It consists of a full day of practice on the Saturday and a full day of racing. When the British Championship has finished, we go to race meetings once a month, practice all day on the Saturday, ready for the race on Sunday. Q. What is your greatest achievement to date? Getting my first win at Fulbeck Kart Circuit and the clerk of the course said it was some of the best racing he had ever seen. Also, getting my MSA licence (which is the karting licence I need to race in the MSA) Q. Who maintains your kart and equipment? Me and my dad clean, fix and set everything up ready for the race weekend and change the setup throughout the weekend which is very important in order to extract the best performance out of the kart. Q. How much does it cost to participate in your sport? Tyres for the British championship: six rounds, new slicks and wets for each race costs £300 per round. Race entries £180 per round. Fuel £38 per round. Practice race weekend before British championship is £110 entry fee for the full weekend. It’s not cheap! 34

Advertising deadline for July - 10th June- visit www.livinglifemagazine.co.uk

Q. Do you have a sponsor or are you looking for one? I’m looking for sponsors to help with any of the costs mentioned above in exchange for advertising on the kart and suit. Any sponsors are welcome to come down and watch and see how it all works. Q. Is your sport dangerous? Yes, all motorsports are dangerous but being on the edge is what makes karting an amazing feeling and getting quicker with each race is brilliant. Q. How would someone get involved in karting? And do you have any tips for newbies? The best way would be to go to their local kart track and see if they enjoy it, if they do they can keep going and after a while get their own kart. My main tip for newbies is to keep going every month because practice makes perfect and there’s no point racing unless you love it and want to race as much as possible. *If any local businesses are interested in sponsoring Charlie then please contact his dad Tony on 07906 145469.

Does your child have an amazing talent? If so, please get in touch at admin@livinglifemagazine.co.uk
