Choosing Your Carpets: Wool vs. Man-Made
Contribution thanks to

Improving your home often involves choosing new flooring. There are so many choices! Read our advice about choosing between wools and man-made carpets
W
hat’s the better carpet: wool or manmade? Well, both types of carpet have their advantages…
Why choose wool carpets? Wool carpets are fantastic for keeping their appearance. Plus, wool is a natural, renewable resource and a good insulator. Choose wool if: • your carpet needs to last for a long time • you have high traffic areas • children have allergies to man-made fibres • you care about environmental sustainability • your home needs a flooring to give it warmth Maybe man-made carpets are for you? The key to man-made is to choose a good density. They are beautifully soft to touch. Less absorbent than wool, they are good at coping with wet spills - and less expensive than wool carpets. Choose a man-made carpet if: • you have a busy family home • you want to keep the costs down • you don’t need your carpet for a long time • you want a soft feel flooring The final decision Generally, decide how long you want your carpet to last, the type of use it may have to cope with and your budget

top tips to improving your home this spring
Contribution thanks to
Natasha Collinson BELLE decorating 07841 687833 www.belledecorating.co.uk
M
ost of us at some time look to improve our homes, be it for us to enjoy, or to improve our property ready to put it on the market. When it comes to thinking home improvements our minds usually turn to decorating. With time and capability most of us can turn our hand to painting, but there are a few key tricks that will turn your painting from average to professional: ALWAYS prep – this is often considered tedious, but with all surfaces sanded, filled and cleaned the finish will not only be better, but last longer. I personally, at BELLE Decorating, sand down not only the woodwork, but also walls and maybe even the ceiling, this ensure that all nibs, contamination or old paint drips are removed. It also allows me to get a closer examination meaning that any cracks/dents are identified and filled, never be fooled by thinking that paint will fill a crack or hole, it won’t, not for long anyway! Choose the right paint – As a professional I am often asked what the difference is between Retail and Trade paint; the main differences are: • • • • •
Trade paint covers better (even after being thinned), as it has higher pigment than retail paint, this can therefore save both money and time Trade paint has a higher spreading rate than retail paint, meaning the same amount goes further Trade paint is sold in larger pack sizes which are more economical Trade paints go through greater test to ensure they reach the high standards professionals are looking for Trade paint is tougher than retail paint, even retail paint that is washable or aimed at Kitchen and Bathrooms may not stand the test of time in the same way trade paint will
You don’t need to be in the trade to buy trade paint, you just need to go to the correct retail outlets that are aimed at both Trade and Domestic customers; Brewers, Crown decorating centre and Dulux decorating centre all sell Trade paint and can all be found in Bedford.

Advertising deadline for May - 10th April- visit www.livinglifemagazine.co.uk
Use the right tools – This can be where it often gets expensive and therefore paying for a professional decorator becomes financially viable. The key items you will need are: • • • • •
An electric sander, as well as sandpaper for smaller areas A large paint scuttle to hold enough paint to do the job A roller pole to cover larger areas in one stroke Good quality rollers, with the right nap; smaller nap for smoother surfaces and finish, larger nap for rougher surfaces Good quality brush for each job are also essential, for example a cutting in paint brush, a larger paint brush for larger areas, a small brush for the smaller, harder to reach areas, and a natural paint brush for oil-based paint
DON’T RUSH, take your time to ensure even coverage on every wall, and always allow the time specified on the tin between coats of paint, failing to do this can result in the paint lifting or scuffing up as you apply a second coat leaving you with a rough and uneven surface. But Home improvement doesn’t need to always be about our walls, with the launch of Chalk based paints it’s becoming increasingly popular to upcycle items of furniture. Chalk based paints are one of the easiest paints to use because no or very little prep is required, it has a quick drying time, and the finish chalkbased paint offers is a ‘Shabby Chic’ look meaning that imperfections with application add character and uniqueness to your much-loved furniture. Chalk based workshops are very popular these days as they offer confidence to start painting your much-loved item. Our nearest chalk-based paint workshop is held at Maison Blanc shop in Hitchin, keep an eye on their Facebook page (Maison Blanc, Hitchin) to find dates of upcoming workshops. So be brave, start small but embrace and enjoy improving your home to achieve your BEAUTIFUL HOME and BEAUTIFUL FURNITURE.

hether you are looking to move or improve, Spring is great time of year to think about ways to smarten up your home.
Windows, doors and conservatories are a great place to start. Improvements in just one or all of these areas can really transform the way your home looks and feels. Changing the colour of the front door or the look and design of windows is one of the first jobs on the list for many homeowners. It creates a real statement and adds personality to old, tired and dated homes. Bi-fold doors are also a wonderful, modern addition to any home. They bring natural light into a property and create an open space into the garden which is ideal for summer days. The quality of products used in today’s doors and windows will also increase security and energy efficiency - making your home the cosy retreat you always wanted. Always make sure you choose a FENSA registered installer, this will ensure a quality service which will give you peace of mind. When the work is complete you will receive a FENSA certificate this will confirm your installation complies with Building Regulations, uses energy efficient products, and is registered with the local council. It also means the company’s warranty is insured – so always look for the FENSA badge.

Simple Electrical Safety Checks you can do yourself
Contribution thanks to
Tom Partridge TJ Electrical 07946 795020

large number of people in the UK expose themselves and their families to potentially fatal electrical accidents in the home by making simple errors, mainly due to a lack of knowledge about the dangers of electricity. It is important to make sure that any electrical installation in your property is well maintained, and it is recommended that you use a registered electrician to check that everything is safe. However, there are a number of simple, visual checks that you can carry out yourself:
• • • • • • • • • •
Make sure that you have RCD protection in your fusebox Check that plug sockets and extension cables are not overloaded. Also check that plugs and sockets are not damaged Check that visible cables and leads are in good condition Ensure that your light fittings are not visibly damaged and that down-lighters are in good working order Do not store combustible materials around your fusebox, electricity meter or electrical intake Do not use the top of the microwave for extra storage and never cover the vents Never trail cables under carpets or rugs Never take mains-powered electrical items into the bathroom Make sure you switch off electrical items when they are not in use

why do we get injured?
Karen Robinson Shefford Osteopathic Clinic

H
ave you had those annoying niggles that don’t go away? Injuries happen from stress to your muscles, tendon and ligaments. If you’ve done something new or trained more, movement the next day may be a little difficult. Think of going for a gentle walk, maybe working a different area of your body, or consider this as the perfect day to stretch out. If you’re feeling pain, something needs to be addressed and corrected.
Tips to prevent injury:
1. Increase activity by 10% a week. Keep your weekly runs the same distance, increasing your weekend run by 10% each week. Increase weights only as your technique allows. Too much weight too quickly will allow your technique to deteriorate and cause too much damage to tissues. 2. New equipment. Initially, mix your old and new equipment (bike, trainers, racket) but avoid increased training intensity during this transition. 3. After you’ve been ill or injured reduce your training initially. Avoid doing too much too soon. You can build back up again quickly; give your body the chance to catch up. 4. Rest days - we recommend 1–2 rest days per week. 5. Change only one variable of your training each week. Time, distance, speed, weight... master one then begin to challenge another aspect. Plus – why not try some Sports Therapy when you need a bit more help along the way. You’ll feel the difference.

Time for pension funds to save the planet
Employees earning a regular salary are suddenly finding deductions are being made from their wages to build a pension for their future. This is a government scheme called Auto Enrolment. An employee is automatically put into the scheme and has to take action to opt out if they wish to. The contribution of the employees, employers and tax relief amount to 6% of a person’s salary within certain limits. It’s a lot of money being stashed away. Of course this money is invested in the stock market but if you are an employee do you know where exactly your money is being invested? In particular, are the pension investments you hold doing damage to the environment and the world around you? In other words are your pension funds adding to global warming when they could be invested in Ethical Pension Funds reducing the risk to the future? The default funds used for Auto Enrolment are within the NEST arrangement, one of these funds is their Ethical Fund – Is this worth thinking about? Over a recent 12 month period the NEST Ethical Fund rose by 4.5% whereas the other funds failed to achieve more than 1.5% over the same period. If you have questions that you need answered to do with savings and investments you can contact Robert at harrisfinancialfriend@gmail.com Robert’s job is not to give financial advice but to use simple explanations that help you along the way

Good Neighbours don’t have to live next door!
B
ack in November 2013 a small group of local people launched the Shefford Good Neighbour Group with the aim of providing help for residents genuinely in need. There was considerable apprehension. Would more volunteers join? Was there really a need for the services we aimed to offer? Would we be able to raise the modest funds necessary to cover expenses? We needn’t have worried! On the very first morning we had a request from a Shefford resident who had damaged both knees in a serious accident and needed lifts to a leisure centre for therapy sessions. Since then the number and range of requests have grown and we now provide help on over 200 occasions a quarter. Many of the requests are for lifts to medical appointments but we’ve also found there’s a need for help shopping, collecting prescriptions and even light DIY jobs, form filling and dog walking. It’s well known that feelings of isolation and loneliness are increasing problems in many communities. Those struggling to get out and about feel they need to see a

friendly face. Shefford Good Neighbours offer befriending as one of our services; a volunteer pops round for a chat over a cup of tea. We’re keen to expand this to include Buddy Walking and help accessing the library facilities.
More volunteers have joined over the years and we are grateful for their commitment and dedication. We find we benefit as well as the clients. It’s good to be part of an enthusiastic and friendly team and we enjoy getting to know each other when we meet for coffee and a chat. We also enjoy meeting the different clients, many of whom call us regularly, get to know us and sometimes form strong bonds with individual volunteers. All are very appreciative of the help we give. Over 5 years on, the Good Neighbour Group is a well established part of the Shefford community. We are keen to welcome new clients and new volunteers, so if you would like to know more please contact us on 07599 937 811. (Please note: all volunteers are DBS checked)

DELIVERY BOYS’ REVIEW by John McBurney & Andrew Martin
We check out the local restaurants & eateries of Shefford & Clifton while delivering, and report back to you portions our 3 dishes each was plentiful and left us completely satisfied. The staff were very attentive and made us feel truly welcome and never rushed, especially our waitress for the evening, Georgina. We finished our meal off with coffee and tea which gave us the opportunity to have a chat with the owner Wendy , and head chef Charlie about their part in the community, for example hosting the ‘Lovely Loft Ladies’ an opportunity for local ladies to meet & socialize in comfort (Check out their Facebook group).
A
nother month, and another edition of ‘Living Life’ to deliver to 4600 homes! Certainly a good way to build up an appetite and after a particularly long day of delivering we decided to finish the day at the ‘The Loft’ in Shefford for a well-earned dinner. We were welcomed by Wendy and her friendly team and shown to a table upstairs. It certainly has a relaxed and calming atmosphere and we were immediately offered drinks and time to unwind whilst perusing their tempting Tapas menu which they offer from 7pm Thursday through to Saturday evenings each week. We were advised to choose between 2-3 dishes each and opted for a starter of olive tapenade, with bread and oil. This was followed in true Tapas style with a continuous delivery of our chosen dishes including potatas bravas, BBQ pork quesidillas, chicken goujons with a yummy herb mayo dip, spinach with feta and pine nuts (made us feel a little bit healthy), champinones al ajiilo (mushrooms with croutons) and sweet potato fries! The food was absolutely delicious!!! It can be very tempting to choose everything off the menu when so hungry but with the generous 20
Already an established coffee shop well known for its breakfast, lunches, coffee and homemade cake, this evening dinner option is certainly one we would recommend for anyone looking for superb food in a relaxed and chilled atmosphere, whether it be a chance to catch up with friends, romantic meal for two or a special occasion.

ARTISANS IN THE YARD - MAD MARCH HARE DAY - post event recap
T
he new Artisans Gallery – which opened the week after Christmas - was preparing for its first big Event of 2019. By 10.00am the Artisans inside awaited their enthusiastic punters. In anticipation, the queue of people came up the yard (many for the first time) bringing their husbands, wives and friends to find out what the new Gallery had in store. Sales took off within a very short time. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes were served by Marje Fitt. Irina Polis guided people around the art tables, Annette Glenn encouraged lookers into buyers - with a potted history of the various items. In Studio 1, Lynne and Nihal served tastings of their hand-crafted Mayfly Cider from flagons into glasses while people sat around to chat. There was a pleasant feeling in the air - and around midday Adrian played his flute and later invited Joanne Fox, a visiting professional singer, to perform a lovely version of Plaisir d’amour to a silent crowded Gallery.

plenty to see and enjoy and prices were well adjusted and varied. Projects in Wood/Giddy up furniture Partnership featured interesting items of furniture, some ready for collection, some awaiting restoration at the Gallery as Adrian completes the final touches before they depart for their new home. Nothing leaves the Gallery without a final coat of TLC. Throughout the day, people came and went with happy smiles on their faces, young children seemed interested and most of all – the discovery of a Annette Glenn & Lucas Ling nice place to visit; and Shefford needs a place like this; was heard by departing guests.
For Adrian and his Artisans, a huge thank you for creating a great place for artists from local areas to come together to show their work and establish a healthy respect for bespoke items, in contrast to the mass markets of throw-away products we see all too often. Keeping fit, fun and friends at Shefford Bowls Club
Why Bowl?
Bowls is a wonderfully simple game that can be enjoyed equally by all ages and abilities. Bowls only takes a short period of coaching and practice to be able to play - that’s when the fascination starts because of the level of skill and precision that can be achieved over time, enough to satisfy the most modest of sporting ambition or the most demanding.
Alison Hammond Shefford Bowls Club 01462 811548
Coaching Society’s Introduction to Bowls programme. All you need are a flat pair of trainers or similar shoes and comfortable clothing. Come and have some fun, you will be very welcome.
Bowls is not physically demanding and individuals often start to bowl later in life. Some after retiring from other sports others simply to relax and enjoy the social side of bowls.
Warning
Bowling can be addictive. You will probably make many new FRIENDS, have a lot of FUN, feel FITTER & wonder why you did not take up bowls before. Why not have a go.
Getting Started
Shefford Bowls Club are offering a FREE introduction to Bowls. Starting in June two courses of 6 weekly sessions will be run with a choice of a Tuesday afternoon or a Thursday evening. These sessions follow the English Bowls 30
