We were delighted to play a small part in the skatepark story on page five. Last issue we exclusively featured local skater Jim Collins’ saga about the petition he raised to get the park renovated. Suffolk Coastal has come to the rescue with talks underway to improve this well-used and much-loved facility.

On pages eight and nine we meet the elegant mother and daughter duo, Sue and Nicky Risby, who run two of the town’s most popular fashion boutiques – Holly Blue and Ninni Noo. Sue kindly let us take a sneaky peek into her chic home above her shop with amazing pictures from photographer Rufus Owen.

Our Emporium on pages 12 and 13 features stunning ways of giving your house an instant makeover. THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION Woodbridge School’s Neil Tetley on staying ahead of the times “There is little doubt that the world of work is changing rapidly, and the speed of this process is only going to accelerate.

Jobs are being automated, including professional jobs, while new ones are being created.

Only recently the biggest hedge fund in the world has announced its plans to automate all buying and selling decisions (because computers can process much more data and will make less emotional decisions!) So what does this mean for young people, and how should schools adapt to best prepare students for the

future? Results will remain important but this won’t be enough. It will be vital that young people develop the skills and attributes that are least vulnerable to automation: problem solving, leadership, entrepreneurship, creativity, and so on.

These develop at the moment, albeit inconsistently, from a traditional independent school education with a broad range of academic and extracurricular opportunities. But we can do better! At Woodbridge we are looking to develop these characteristics in a much more explicit and focused way. We have produced a list of fourteen attributes, entitled Learning@Woodbridge, that we would like to help our pupils develop.

These are attributes such as working

collaboratively, independence, using imagination and knowing how to problem-solve. Rather than just having a ‘creativity day’, we are looking to ensure the development of these qualities is part of the everyday experience, both inside and outside the classroom.

In biology, pupils will look at photosynthesis and discuss resilience (what do we do when we are stuck?)

In drama, pupils will produce a devised piece and think about the nature of collaboration. Education needs to evolve.

At Woodbridge we aren’t just ‘doing what we’ve always done’ but adapting (while retaining academic rigour) to meet the demands young people will face in 2025, 2030 and beyond.”

SKATERS’ DELIGHT! Suffolk Coastal are in talks with local skater Jim Collins to improve the town’s much-loved skatepark after his e-petition attracted nearly 200 signatures locally.

In our autumn issue we highlighted Jim’s story after his heartfelt plea to the council to carry out maintenance works as well as consider refurbishing the park.

“The skatepark is more than just a few ramps behind Deben Pool,” Jim said at the time. “Personally, it’s a place where I have been able to take my mind off things. It’s helped me through some of the toughest times of my life.”

In his e-petition he asked for the council to consider adding a separate seating area for parents as well as extending and improving the ramps.

Since then we can reveal that Jim and fellow skaters have met with representatives from Suffolk Coastal.

“They carried out the repair work which was great,” says a delighted Jim. “And they’re also considering removing the hawthorn tree and installing a seating area as well as looking at additional ramps and equipment.”

Councillor Haworth-Culf, Suffolk Coastal’s cabinet member with responsibility for customers, communities and leisure, says: “Suffolk Coastal remains committed to ensuring that

the skatepark in Woodbridge is fully functional and its users get the best possible experience.

“One of our officers has recently had a very positive meeting with the skatepark users and is now working to set up a meeting with the original designers of the skatepark to explore whether any improvements can be made, although we recognise that we are working within a restricted space.

We have also ensured that the maintenance work is fully up to date. We will continue to work with the skatepark users to develop a practical way forward.”

WISHES FOR WOODY IN 2017 With the new year upon us we thought we’d catch up with a few of the good people of Woodbridge to see what they wish for their town in the coming year David Farrow, Cornerstone Residential “My wish would be to see lots more events happening on Market Hill, as we’d love to get involved.”

hey are two of the most popular shops in town but what people might not know is that the owners of Holly Blue and Ninni Noo are indeed mother and daughter.

What’s nice is how they complement and support each other. The two boutiques are situated close together on the Thoroughfare and you will often see Sue and Nicky Risby popping into each other’s shops.

Sue, from Holly Blue, says: “We are two separate businesses with our own styles but we can often mix it up to find the perfect outfit for our customers. It’s not unusual for us to dash across the road to grab some shoes or a top for a customer to try on while she’s in the fitting room.

“And we don’t just do that with each other, we also share customers with Adams Apple next door who, again, has a completely different style. Between the three of us we can pretty much sort out most women’s wardrobe desires!”

And if that’s not cosy enough, Nicky’s

partner Carl Bowen owns the fantastic Quay Street Barber in Woodbridge to complete the family dynasty!

“We’re taking over!” jokes Nicky.

As Sue opened Holly Blue 14 years ago in the Thoroughfare, Nicky was establishing herself in Ipswich with her own fashion shop then called Nyx. “But Ipswich wasn’t for me,” she says. “So I moved to Woodbridge.”

She says Ninni Noo is so-named after her beloved late grandmother’s – Sue’s mother – affectionate nickname for her.

Sue smiles: “They were very close and it’s a lovely thing that she named the shop after it.”

Sue says her own shop Holly Blue is named after a British species of butterfly.

“My friends used to say I was always so busy, flitting around like a butterfly, hence the business name!”

that from the cool, contemporary style which runs throughout the property with its eye-catching monochromatic theme.

“My husband John and I moved into the flat in 2011 after the previous owners were sadly forced to leave due to ill health. It was a pre-loved house and we set about putting our own stamp on it.”

This included adding a spacious roof terrace which now overlooks the award-winning Elmhurst Park.

“We’re so lucky with that view,” she says.

“When my grandchildren come here they call the park our back garden!”

It’s obvious that Sue loves her artwork too, with two original vibrant pieces by well-known and now collectable street artist, Dom Pattinson, once a local himself, adorning her walls.

“I bought from him when he was exhibiting his work over the road,” she says.

“At the time we didn’t realise how big he was going to become.”

Sue clearly loves living above the shop and enjoys all that Woodbridge has to offer on her doorstep.

“You wouldn’t believe how quiet it is living above The Thoroughfare,” she adds with a smile. “From 5pm the town just empties and it’s blissfully peaceful.”

re the many excesses of the last few weeks already showing on your waistline? If so, welcome to the new year!

Did you make any resolutions? Have you joined a gym, perhaps? Or are you having a dry January? Are you being mindful? Are you counting calories?

Each of these ideas dovetail seamlessly with holistic treatment, which is based on the theory of the four pillars of healthcare: diet, sensible exercise, positive thinking and treatment. They all help to restore your innate vitality and sense of well-being.

The diet that is needed if you’re unwell is different to a diet you can enjoy when you’re in good health.

When you’re well, an 80 per cent healthy, 20 per cent less healthy ratio is usually good enough. If you’re acutely ill, a 100 per cent healthy diet is only going to help you get better more quickly.

If you have noticed your trousers are a bit tighter, don’t panic, the solution is simple.

To reduce weight, it is merely necessary for you to burn more calories than you consume.

Now doesn’t that sound easy?

Why not try a two-week challenge? Foods to avoid include coffee, white flour products,

junk food and sugar. Meanwhile, eat plenty of poultry, tofu, fish, semi-skimmed goat’s milk and brown rice.

Your body needs about two weeks to clear itself of any given food. You can then reintroduce foodstuffs individually, and see how you feel. Leave about 72 hours between the reintroductions to allow time for you to note any reactions that may occur. If none do, then in moderation these foods are not likely to be aggravating your health.

You don’t need to pump iron to enjoy the health and fitness rewards of exercise.

Gentler activities can provide noticeable wellness benefits. So walking, gardening, swimming, keep fit, cycling or dancing may be more suitable, depending on what you want to achieve.

Are you desperate to switch careers and do something more creative?

Melton’s Richard Ginger did just that and has never looked back …

“

fter years of working in publishing and communications as a journalist and then a PR manager, the hankering to try something altogether different and hands-on was proving irresistible.

A long-term and regular auction addict (getting my weekly fix at Campsea Ashe), bidding on forlorn-looking pieces of pine to repair and rejuvenate, this love affair with characterful, old and antique furniture was the obvious catalyst for something bigger.

Plans were hatched, ideas tossed around, designs sketched, scrunched up and re-drawn. How to combine the innate character of timeworn timber with a more modernist edge? Finally the light bulb moment: reclaimed wood and steel – the perfect partnership of old and new.

And so, taking inspiration from the pared-back, clean lines of Scandinavian design, hand-welded steel frames were the obvious choice to steer the furniture away from being too quaint and ‘chocolate-box cottage’.

After weeks of garagebased experimenting, tweaking and refining; alongside trips to clamber around reclamation yards and conversations with local suppliers, Salvation was ready to launch, setting up shop in the draughty corner of a generous farmer friend’s barn at Peakhill Farm in Theberton. The move coincided with the launch of our website. Understandably nervous and experiencing inevitable ‘what-have-Idone’ moments, a flurry of orders quickly abated any concerns.

Since then, it’s been the ongoing learning curve that every small

business owner will recognise. That means wearing a gamut of different-shaped hats: everything from chief web designer and blogger, to logistics manager, head of customer services, bubble wrapper and floor-sweeper. The glamour!

Things are also constantly evolving. From starting out with just a rudimentary logo and website, we’re now slowly starting to create a more cohesive brand feel. A central ethos of Salvation is about celebrating and taking welldeserved refuge in those all-important simple things in life. Those clever Danes have a word for it, ‘hygge’, which is focused on creating cosy, warm environments, spending time together and enjoying things like good food and company.

We’re trying to tap into that need for our homes to be spaces to really relax and where we can cut ourselves some well-earned slack. So, with our dining tables artisan-made from rustic materials, they become symbols at the heart of the home as places to gather for nourishment and togetherness.

Have you always wanted to write a book but never quite got round to it? Meet the town resident who battled dementia to put pen to paper … in her eighties!

I

t’s the time of year when we all think about making big changes in our lives, whether it’s shedding a few pounds, ditching your job or starting a new hobby.

If you’re looking for inspiration to get motivated, you need look no further than Rhonda Jacob, who lives in Woodbridge Lodge care home.

The 85-year-old is proud to show off her autobiography – an impressive book of more than 100 pages, some with photographs, and which her family helped her to compile.

“He was 6ft 5in. I called him Judge, and he was terrifying”

The colourful story, spanning her glamorous life from her birth in Paris to her schooldays in the USA and her globetrotting early adult years as the wife of a Royal Navy officer, makes fascinating reading for the staff and other residents at the Kingsley Healthcare-run home in Burkitt Road.

The home’s manager Samantha Saunders believes the book also plays a vital role in Rhonda’s care.

She says: “Now Rhonda is living with dementia she is prone to forgetting things, and that can be frustrating and upsetting for her.

But looking through the book helps her to remember details of her life.

“I arrived here a long time after Rhonda, and for me and the other staff, it really helps us get to know her. Person-centred care is incredibly important for people who are living with dementia.”

As detailed in her book, Rhonda’s parents were both American, though she was born in Paris at a time when her father, Oliver Parker McComas, was working as a banker in Europe.

“I was seriously ill with rickets as a young child and spent some time

at a Swiss sanatorium,” she says.

Returning to the USA, Rhonda’s tale goes on to describe her growing up “in an apartment 12 floors up” in Manhattan, New York.

It also charts her father’s business ascent to become chief executive of global tobacco company Philip Morris International, and includes memories of a formidable grandfather who was the Chief Justice in Pennsylvania.

“He was 6ft 5in. I called him Judge and found him terrifying,” she says.

Rhonda, who studied history of art at Columbia University in Manhattan, went on to wed William Jacob, a Royal Navy pilot stationed at the Pentagon.

Life in the forces took them both to places as far-flung as Pakistan and India, all chronicled in the book.

The couple finally settled in Suffolk with their two sons, Ian and Patrick.

Returning to civilian life, William went on to have a successful business career and became chairman of an engineering firm.

Meanwhile, Rhonda contented herself mostly with voluntary work.

Among her varied roles, she chaired a board assessing Hollesley Bay young offenders’ institution, and was on the board of the Highlands residential care home in Woodbridge.

She also devoted her time to the Red Cross, Woodbridge Museum, and the Suffolk Craft Society.

The book, printed only for Rhonda and her family, includes a number of pictures of her family home in Cumberland Street, which she describes as “the most haunted house in the town.”

he near-constant stream of guests traipsing through your home, having to cook endless breakfasts, and the daily stripping of beds. It may not appeal to everyone, but these Woodbridge residents wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hill House Hall

M

ost people know of Hill House Hall on Market Hill because of the beautiful vines of bulging tomatoes that are grown in its front garden every summer.

Lucky guests staying at the B&B can soak up the history of the building, which dates back to the 14th century. It was featured in the 2011 Sunday Times list of the top 100 hotels in the world.

Having discovered the property to be a medieval Wealden hall, Sarenka Knight and her partner, Edward Frost, set about developing it into what is now a thriving bed and breakfast business.

“Given the history of the house and the uniqueness it holds as one of the country’s most easterly Wealden halls, we thought it would be lovely to let people come, stay and share in the history,” says Sarenka.

“Many of our guests come from across the world due to our historical significance” She had previously run a B&B in the south of France, as well as a commercial tomato growing business. Also a hugely passionate cat lover, she had a reputation in Europe for breeding Bengal cats. So Sarenka saw the opportunity to expand the business even further – and opened their very own cat hotel!

“We are a very small cattery with only five double chalets, she says. “Being that size means we offer exceptional care and comfort to all our little feline guests.

“Many of our B&B visitors come from across the world because of our historical significance, but then equally lots of them simply want to enjoy Woodbridge and the surrounding area.” l www.hillhousehall.com

In the early days, Cindy attracted most of her guests via the acclaimed Sawday’s B&B guides but she says that since the advent of the internet, Melton Hall literally sells itself.

“We get lots of repeat business, and people come because we are a family home, which appeals to lots of business people who would otherwise end up in a soulless hotel.”

Cindy and Colin have also welcomed a number of famous guests in the past, notably musicians performing at Snape Maltings or recording at Decoy Studios.

How long have you lived in Woodbridge?

Since I was two. That’s me, pictured left, in the bed department at the store’s grand opening in May 1969.

What was the town like when you were growing up? I always felt Woodbridge was a safe and happy place, with an excellent community spirit. One abiding childhood memory is being in our flat above the store and watching a double decker bus go past, on its way to the stop outside what is now WH Smith. It’s hard to imagine a big bus making it up the Thoroughfare now!

What has been the most significant change to Woodbridge? What was once a sleepy Suffolk town is now a fashionable place to live and visit. It’s quite a transformation.

If you could have one wish granted for the town, what would it be? I think it would be fantastic if there was a footbridge across the Deben from the town. You could walk up to Sutton Hoo, then loop back past the Wilford Bridge and along the river for an amazing circular walk. Oh, and no more out-of-town developments near Woodbridge, thank you!

A little jeopardy can often lead to superb shots, says Zac Patsalides

n this age of digital photography, a lot of people ask me why I still use film. There are a couple of reasons. One, it makes me more methodical in my approach. With digital equipment, it’s easy to fire off 100 shots, before hopping on the computer to choose the best one. With my camera, I get just 12 exposures per roll of film, and each press of the shutter button costs me money. It makes me a lot more selective and so improves each shot I take.

Using film teaches you to slow down and learn, rather than simply shoot and rely on technology.

Another factor is the organic results it produces.

Some music lovers swear a song will sound better played off vinyl than an iPod, and I find film is very much the same. The colours, imperfections and physical grain are all things that digital editing can recreate. But why spend all that time on a computer, altering photos to look like they were taken on film, when you can just shoot on it in the first place?”

ZAC ON HIS PHOTOGRAPHY “During my extensive travels around East Asia, I developed a love of photographing day-to-day life on the streets. Since returning to Suffolk, I’ve opted to slow down and focus on local landscapes and our beautiful skies. The photos I take are far from instant, and it can take up to half an hour to set up and capture a single shot. lthough the winter weather can be grim, for most of the year it’s a real joy to work outside and I consider myself very lucky to have done that for the best part of 20 years. Like many others, I came to my landscape and garden design career late, having previously worked in the music industry, following a spell as a surveyor. The great joy for me was the total involvement in the process from drawing board to completed garden project.

Since 2013, I have been course leader on the Landscape & Garden Design Foundation degree at nearby Easton & Otley College, which has given me an opportunity to put something back into the industry from which I learned so much.

It’s rewarding seeing students blossom as the course progresses, especially those who break free from the shackles of a desk job to embark on a much more life-affirming and creative career.

“Even the smallest ships we handle here are around 3,000 tonnes. Ships are big, you can’t just chuck these things around, it takes patience, approaching things slowly. We’re here to reduce the risk for everyone, and the bigger the ships, the more patient you have to be!”

Jane is not daunted by the sheer size of the ships she works on, even though their presence often causes a ripple in the press.

“As a Harwich pilot our main trade is with the container ships and these just keep getting bigger,” she says. “The 130 metre ships of early containerisation are now the small feeder ships of today, taking containers from the super ports of Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Antwerp to smaller container ports around the coast of Europe.”

The commercial sea industry has generally been regarded as a man’s world but the likes of Jane are paving the way for future generations.

“I’m quite confident about my abilities,” she adds. “But one of the things I love about this job is that I’m always learning, you never stop learning.”

“I’m Luna and I came to live with my pet humans Catherine and Eamonn in Woodbridge three and a half years ago. They will tell you I’m one of the most gregarious and friendly dogs you’re likely to meet – and that I love swimming in the sea.

“They were so proud when I gave birth to my gorgeous puppies – five boys and two girls (pictured below). I’m told I went from being a crazy, active dog to a devoted mother.

Even, in fact, travelling to London when they were stars for a day, after being picked for a TV ad campaign for Green Flag.

“We had great fun filming despite the fact my pups kept falling asleep. The crew had to gently wake them with little blasts of air. A small price to pay for stardom, I feel!”

NOT TRUSTING THE AGENT If you feel you don’t trust the estate agent, use a different one! Once you have decided on an agent, give them your trust and let them find the right buyer for your home. Resist the temptation to interfere and let them do their job well.

DISMISSING EARLY BUYERS High prices often come early, while low prices will often come late. Don’t automatically dismiss early offers – they may well be the highest ones you get.

Why? Genuinely keen buyers will always make the first move, while those that are less committed hang back.

BELIEVING HIGH VALUATIONS …

Some agents overvalue and give you the highest asking price to simply buy your business. If you suspect you’re being offered an over-estimated sale price, ask for comparable sales as evidence.

… OR BEING DUPED BY LOW FEES Steer clear of agents who are offering to undercut on fees. Remember, you get what you pay for, and cheap agents will give cheap service. They also need high turnover to survive – so they will want to push through sales at almost any price. It is better to pay 0.5% more for a selling fee than to lose £10,000 off your selling price!

POOR NEGOTIATORS COST MONEY If you have a well-presented home, you don’t need a salesman, you need a negotiator. Sound negotiation can substantially improve your position. Poor negotiation can cost you money. Use an agent that wants to work for you and achieve the best price.

THE MULTIPLE AGENCY TRAP Successful sales aren’t achieved by instructing multiple agents at the same time. Not to be confused with joint agency, in multiple agency agreements, none of the agents will be inspired to work hard to sell your property in case they get pipped at the post.

THINKING THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR HOUSE Agents should carefully vet, or qualify, prospective buyers before arranging for them to visit your home. They should also provide constructive feedback from viewings. If your home isn’t selling there are usually only two reasons: the agency isn’t working hard enough on your behalf, or the price may be too optimisitc.

FORGETTING TO KEEP YOUR HOME SHOWROOM TIDY Dull homes get dull prices. We all know first impressions count, so stand back and look at what will greet a prospective purchaser when they enter the house.

Don’t confuse home improvements with presentation though. Clean, tidy and fresh-smelling homes will always end up selling for a better price.

USING WEBSITES THAT DON’T DO THEIR JOB When presentation is key, an up-to-date website is vital for selling your property.

Ensure your agent updates their site regularly and represents your home accurately. Is the presentation clear and current? Is the website easy to use? Find out how many people actually visit the site and check it out for yourself.
