ost people will agree that it’s been a very long winter! So, in this issue we’re looking on the bright side of life, embracing spring and all that comes with it; being out and about in our wonderful town with the prospect of blue skies and some warming sunshine.

This issue’s stunning front cover is called Namaste and is the work of talented local artist Sarah Baddon Price. The prestigious bi-annual art show, Art for Cure, returns to Glemham Hall in early May with almost 100 artists, and we loved catching up with some of those exhibiting to find out what really inspires them. All is revealed on pages 18 and 19.

With the Woodbridge 10k a major date in the town’s sporting calendar, we looked at the history of the race and met some of the inspirational runners who we’ll be cheering on as they slog it up Drybridge Hill, not once but twice (pages 12 and 13). The very best of luck to them all.

Then, on page 17 David Mortimer tells us about his passions – Woodbridge and drone flying. Taking over the reigns as mayor from Clare Perkins this May, David has a busy year ahead of him, but will always find time for his beloved drones, which he uses for a range of jobs – from aerial shots to examining roofs and structures for surveyors.

In this issue’s home feature on pages 8 and 9, Sacha Seddon-Price invited us to Chestnut Barn to share the delights of barn life. A dream since being a teenager, Sacha couldn’t be happier, loving the open plan living and how family life feels much more inclusive these days.

Page 11 tells the story of lovely ex-herring trawler, Marie. Transformed by Art Butler and Claire Cordeaux to double up as a stage for maritime and music festivals, Marie is thought to be one of only two such vessels in the UK. This very special trawler will be taking centre stage during the Beowulf Festival in early May, where she will be moored near Whisstocks and playing host to local DJ’s, singers and artists.

RIP CLIFF It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Cliff Weston, the talented pianist featured in our last issue.

Cliff, who played for big bands and legends such as Johnny Dankworth back in the day, could often be found entertaining fellow residents at his Burkitt Road care home, Woodbridge Lodge.

He dazzled those around him with his talent often filling the corridors with his music. No stranger to big crowds, Cliff played in bands famous in the Midlands such as the Alhambra Players and Astoria Players.

Sadly, he passed away on January 30th.

Jill Harris, operations manager at the care home, says: “Everyone at

Woodbridge Lodge misses Cliff and the spontaneity of his piano playing that suddenly filled the home with music.

He was a tremendous character and a great showman who lifted the spirits of everyone around him.”

STOP THESE BURGLARIES …

Staff at the Pavilion Café are urging members of the public to keep their eyes peeled after the 13th break-in at the popular venue based on Kingston Field.

Even though no money is left on the premises overnight, the café is being repeatedly targeted by thieves who have broken in and mostly taken sweets, causing costly damage and distress.

Thursdays nights, any time after 9pm, seem to be a common time they strike leading staff to wonder if this maybe someone who is visiting the town centre on that particular evening of the week.

If anyone sees someone acting suspiciously near the café, they are being asked to take a full description and call the police on 101.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS? Woodbridge Tennis Club is opening its doors for the Great British Tennis Weekend, a national initiative organised by the Lawn Tennis Association to encourage people to take up the sport. It will be hosted on May 12th and 13th at the club based behind Kingston Field with lots of free activities on offer as well as special deals on membership and coaching.

PASTA LA VISTA Despite the imminent closure of 94 outlets around the country by restaurant group, Prezzo, we can confirm that the local branch in Woodbridge remains open for business.

It’s been reported that creditors of the chain, owned by private equity firm TPG Capital, have backed a rescue package that will see it close around a third of the group, including the Prezzo, Mexico and Cleaver brands. All 39 Chimichanga branches, including the one in Ipswich, will close. In all, around 500 people will lose their jobs.

A deal was struck under a restructuring arrangement more commonly known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA).

One regular diner at the Woodbridge branch (pictured above), says: “We’re so lucky that our lovely Prezzo has survived these closures, it’s a very well-used venue in the town and it would be such a shame to see it go.”

Area 25 is Suffolk’s only indoor skatepark and a staggering 60,000 youngsters have been through its doors. So why is it under threat?

A

rea 25 has long been the saviour of many a frustrated parent, desperate for their kids to get some much-needed exercise in a safe, friendly atmosphere. Situated in Martlesham’s retail park this huge hangar is home to the only indoor skatepark for miles (the Colchester park closed down earlier in the year and the nearest after that is in Norwich).

Kids of all ages and backgrounds from all over the county, indeed region, now make the pilgrimage to Area 25 all looking to ‘land it’ – that means pulling off a successful scooter trick, to the uninformed! Run by Ipswich brothers Marco Boreham and Savalas Clouting, fondly known as Sal, it also hosts skateboarders and BMX riders.

It was summer 2012 when they realised they were always transporting their own children - they have three each - to indoor skateparks.

“The skatepark in Colchester, the Empire, was about a third of the size of this and had a concrete floor,” recalls Marco. “It was freezing for us parents standing there watching - that’s when we had the idea to open our own. A work contact, Ben Peters, who’s big on the BMX scene and has helped raise funds for the outdoor park in Ipswich, kindly gave us lots of advice.”

The brothers started to look for ideal venues.

“We were originally looking at a building over the road which wasn’t tall

enough and when we pointed at this one, they said it was ‘their problem building’,” says Sal. “It’d been a mayonnaise factory and was full of equipment and needed a lot doing.”

The brothers took the plunge and pooled their skills – Marco’s a carpenter and joiner and Sal’s a builder – and spent six months painstakingly stripping it all back to a shell, then renovating with professionally-built ramps, installing a viewing gallery, toilets, shop and smaller ramps for youngsters.

It was a real labour of love which saw them lose out on their own paid work.

“We were working from morning to night every day,” smiles Marco. “We were like ships that pass in the night with our wives!”

They first opened the doors of Area 25 back in February 2013 and sold more than 8,000 tickets that year.

“We had our best year last year with 13,000 coming through,” says Sal, “This is mainly due to the Empire shutting down; we’re attracting kids from all over now, we’ve had groups in from Chelmsford and Bedfordshire. Even Scotland.”

Their Young Shredders Club, where the older kids teach the youngsters, is hugely popular, and manager Matthew ‘Woody’ Woodley is a hit with parents and kids alike.

Initially the brothers agreed a decent rent and signed a five year lease but now they reckon it’s set to almost double.

“It’s sweaty palms time,” says Marco.

“The thing is when we first came here there were a lot of empty buildings but now it’s a prime site.”

“When you look at it and weigh it all up, we earn a little bit but nothing to give up our day jobs for and sometimes when you look at the greater picture it doesn’t look good.”

They turned the venture into a Community Interest Company (CIC) three years ago and are always looking at ways of earning extra income – selling advertising banners inside and also the venue is available to rent out for children’s parties, groups or even corporate events (it is licensed).

And help is also on hand in the form of a group of parents, led by Woodbridge artist Samantha Barnes, who are setting up a Crowdfunder to raise £15,000 towards the rent hike to help secure the park’s future.

Samantha says: “We’ll be organising one-off events and making applications to existing funds. If any other parents want to help, please do get in touch.”

THE BARN IDENTITY Having dreamt of living in a barn since being a teenager, Sacha Seddon-Price’s wish finally came true Pictures by Jemma Watts

N

ot many people decide to buy a home that has no roof and when they’re standing three inches deep in rainwater. But that’s exactly what Sacha Seddon-Price and husband Gary decided to do.

Their barn conversion will be familiar to many of us, nestled on the Beacon Hill Farm site on Bealings Road in Martlesham.

“When we first saw the property in October 2016 it was pretty rough to say the least,” says Sacha. “Full of water, no roof and little to really give you a sense of its potential, but we knew it was for us.

“Having wanted a barn since my teenage days, we’d looked at several over the years, but none were quite right, mainly due to location.

“I wanted that barn lifestyle but wasn’t keen to be stuck in a field, miles from anywhere. And that’s why Chestnut Barn ticked all the boxes; we’re only minutes from the centre of Woodbridge.

“With lots of interest in the property, developer Andy Mexome of Mex Homes explained that if we were serious, we needed to put down a deposit that very weekend.

It was a real leap of faith as we didn’t know how it was going to turn out, but we couldn’t be more delighted.”

And, seven months from their

first visit, Sacha, Gary and children Georgia, 11, and Max, nine, were calling Chestnut Barn home.

With planning already granted, the couple were able to fine-tune the layout, including taking out two bathrooms and a window, and changing the size of the bedrooms.

“But it needed very little alteration to meet our needs,” says Sacha.

“What has always appealed is the open living space that a barn offers, so we made the bedrooms slightly smaller to ensure we had as much family space as possible. We also have a playroom, so the kids have a place to hang out with friends and call their own.

“How we live now feels so much more inclusive than before. I can be in the kitchen and I’m still involved in everything the kids or Gary are doing – the ground floor is really the hub of the house, but there’s also a great lounge upstairs too.”

Underfloor heating throughout the ground floor also ensures the whole space is kept warm without intrusive radiators.

Sacha, owner of the Suffolk Shutter Company, is passionate about buying British and supporting British manufacturers and local trades. This is evident throughout her home, including the beautiful kitchen built by local firm, Touchwood. “They’re really good

guys at Touchwood and their customer service is excellent,” adds Sacha, who also enjoys interesting furniture such as the tractor coffee table from her go-to store, The House in Town, on St Peter’s Street in Ipswich.

With an avid interest in interior design, Sacha is the first to admit she’s not a fan of soft furnishings or curtains. “I think that’s why I love shutters so much. They’re infinitely practical and super-easy to keep clean. With original and new beams throughout, and some across windows, the barn hasn’t been the easiest of installations, but we’ve got shutters in our bedroom and in the lounge.”

“How we live now feels so much more inclusive than before” An eye for the eclectic means Sacha is always looking for something out of the ordinary.

“Society is becoming so homogenised, with the same shops everywhere you go. I think we’re lucky here in Suffolk as there is such a thriving entrepreneurial spirit and so many great independents.

“Most of my career before setting up my own business was in food marketing, and so I love that we have so many fab local food

producers. I admire places such as Snape Maltings that really fly the flag for local produce and it’s great that I can head to the Fire Station in Woodbridge, which uses local produce and even roasts its own coffee.”

Both Sacha and Gary are always up for a challenge and the medal tally showcased in their bathroom bears testament to this. “We both enjoy running and have completed lots of local 10k runs and half marathons. A real highlight for us both was completing the Marathon du Medoc in France in 2016 which involved running in temperatures of 33°C through the vineyards around Bordeaux and enjoying fine wines at each of the chateaux we visited.

“Gary is also cycling mad, hence the Pinarello limited edition bike suspended from the ceiling.

Thinking it would be a great piece of art, the bike was put up during the build so I’m not sure how it’s ever coming down.”

Chestnut Barn is Sacha and Gary’s eighth home in the 14 years they’ve been together, four of which were renovation projects. “I think we’re here to stay, unless some amazing opportunity presents itself,’ adds Sacha with a smile. “Not all teenage dreams become a reality, thank goodness, but the chance of barn life was a dream worth the wait.”

MEET, MARIE! An ex-herring trawler will take centre stage at the town’s forthcoming Beowulf Festival. Here we catch up with her owners …

T

his is Marie, the Scottish ex-herring trawler moored in the town and owned by the founder members of the fabulous psychedelic Celtic folk fusion band, Aartwork.

Art Butler and Claire Cordeaux have transformed this lovely vessel over the last few of years so she can double up as a stage for maritime and music festivals.

“We think there might be one other boat like her in the country, though we’re not entirely sure,” says Art, who is a marine engineer by day and violinist in the band by night.

Initially Art needed a workshop/office for his busy maritime engineering business in the town, Deben Marine Limited, and as soon as he clapped eyes on Marie 14 years ago, knew she was the one.

“I bought her in Troon in Scotland,” says Art, who was, rather fortuitously, born in a lighthouse in Scotland! “She was a ringnetter; they used to fish in pairs with a net between them to catch the herrings. I still keep her seaworthy in good condition and take her out regularly.”

Claire says: “We’d been thinking for sometime that she needed another job as we didn’t want her just sitting in the mud and as we play a lot of live music at festivals ourselves, we thought it would be cool to have her as a stage boat! We got in touch with the Ipswich Maritime Festival and pitched the idea and they said yes and so we took the boat there, built the stage and hosted lots of artists and played ourselves at the festival.

And that was the start of it all really.”

Marie has since been used at the Hull Folk and Maritime Festival, where Aartwork performed on board, and also at Brest Maritime International Festival as well as the Festival du Chant Maritime Bretagne at

Paimpol both in Brittany.

The stage, which is approximately 4m x 3.5m and 1.5m above the deck, is built from scaffolding and now takes her musical crew around four hours to erect. The boat also provides PA, lighting, sound engineers and a green room.

Art says: “It’s great because the band crews the boat to the events and then we build the stage and play. When we’re at sea we have two people on watch all the time. It’s an incredibly bonding experience!”

Claire and Art started out as a duo with Aartwork back in 2005 before the other three joined in more recent years, though they say they can perform with any combination of people.

“Last year we did 50 gigs which means we’re out a lot!” smiles Claire.

The couple, who also organise the music for the Woodbridge Maritime Festival and the town’s Shellfish Shuck Festival, say they were honoured when co-producer of the five-day Beowulf Festival, Jan Pulsford, asked them to provide the boat stage and perform at the event.

Marie will enjoy her starring role on day three of the event – Saturday 5th May. She’ll be moored near the town’s new square at Whisstocks and will host many local DJ’s and artists including Jesse Quinn, Peter Hepworth, Girl In A Gale, Caswell and of course, Aartwork themselves.

Art and Claire have launched a not-forprofit organisation called Sea Folk Arts now enabling Marie to connect coastal performing arts communities, celebrate maritime heritage and showcase work in multiple maritime venues.

JAMES CORNISH (Pictured Middle Right) James, who lives in Martlesham Heath, enjoyed a spell of running around a decade ago but only began running regularly when he joined the Shufflers back in October 2015. This will be the third time that James has run the 10k and he loves the fact that the runners get to pass the crowds three times and that ‘the noise is just brilliant.’ Unsurprisingly James says that the second steep hill climb (Drybridge) is his least favourite part of the race as ‘it always hurts however well you’ve timed it’. However on the day, James will have the London Marathon under his belt so is hoping to have plenty in the tank for the tougher parts! The Cornish family will turn out to support James in his race which he says is ‘a great event for kids as it’s really exciting to watch.’ Last year James ran 39:17 and modestly says that any improvement on his time ‘would be great.’

From humble beginner to slick athlete, every runner has a story to tell ...

KAREN KEEBLE (Pictured Bottom Right) Karen is married with three children and when she’s not running is busy looking after her own business, Karen’s Cleaning.

Her running journey began in February 2017 when she took part in a six-week running course, which she really enjoyed.

Having never run before, she gained the confidence she needed to start jogging around the forests where she lives, increasing a little each time. Karen says that running gives her a buzz, removes daily stresses and, as an added bonus, has helped her lose weight too. Now a regular at the Kesgrave parkrun which is a free weekly 5km run for runners of all standards, Karen, from Sutton Heath, is busy training for the Woodbridge 10k. She says; “I’m looking forward to the atmosphere and people cheering me

PHILIP COWLES (Pictured Top Right) The pride of two of his sons completing the juniors race in 2012 prompted Philip to sign up for his first Woodbridge 10k in 2013. Freely admitting to being ‘not much of a runner’ Philip, from Woodbridge, had never run more than three miles before but set himself the goal of not stopping along the route and finishing, whatever his time. Armed with a printed programme on how to run a 10k in three months, printed off by wife June, Philip’s training schedule began, and he’s never looked back. This will be his fifth race and as he says: “I’m still slow, but this year I’d like to get around in under an hour. DAVID RICHES Splitting his time between Walberswick and Saffron Walden, the natural environment is a key source of inspiration for David.

“Here in Suffolk, it’s the coast, the light and the huge skies that inspire me. When I’m Saffron Walden it’s the relationship between trees and the topography of rural Essex.”

Another newcomer to Art for Cure, David says: “I visited in 2016 and was amazed at just how big and well organised everything was, and the calibre of artists involved was incredible. And then, it’s all for a great cause.”

A graphic designer all his working life, David explains, “I’ve got to where I am by working like crazy, so I could ditch the proper job and paint full time.

With my art now, my palette knives are my most important tool. They force me to be bold and have lots of happy accidents in pure colour.”

Working in oils, all of David’s art is painted outdoors. “This means I’ve been frozen in winter and had sunstroke in the summer. I also try very hard to not have my work blown into the sea throughout the year!” l David will be exhibiting 15 pieces with prices ranging from £280 to £1,200.

ELIZABETH HAYLEY Waldringfield-based Elizabeth is also a newcomer to this year’s Art for Cure.

Living on a boat on the River Deben brings new inspiration to Elizabeth. Her large images on substrates including steel, brass and paper often focus on environments or objects that have a sense of

impermanence or fragility.

Having completed an MA at the Royal College of Art in printmaking, Elizabeth loves the process of print and says she knows when a piece is finally finished “when I have lived with it for a while.”

“For me, I always prefer my work to be on someone’s wall and enjoyed rather than stored,” adds Elizabeth. l Exhibiting paper and brass editions of her work, Elizabeth’s art is available from £95 on paper, £1,400 on brass.

THERONDA HOFFMAN Owner of Kesgrave Arts, artist Theronda Hoffman has been involved in Art for Cure since its inception in 2014.

With a motto “I live to paint and paint to live”, she attributes her inspiration to the Suffolk landscape, but also her South African homeland. Theronda says, “Often, animals work their way into my landscapes.”

Having enjoyed success at both previous exhibitions, Theronda has high hopes for this year’s event. “I sold 25 paintings last time, so I’m hoping my paintings will be as popular this time. Art for Cure is a very noble concept and I feel honoured to be involved.”

Don’t rely on SPF in a daily moisturiser for year-round sun protection.

Most people apply facial moisturisers far more thinly than intended and so the level of sun protection will not match what it says on the packet. A moisturiser with SPF is usually adequate for small amounts of UV exposure, such as walking to the car, but if you intend to be outdoors for longer, then add a facial SPF 30 – 50 to your daily skin care.

W

hat a healthy tan!’ When did you last say this to a friend?

Whilst many people associate a tan with looking healthy it is quite the opposite unless, of course, it is fake. A tan shows that our skin has already been harmed by UV radiation and it is trying to protect itself from further damage. This type of damage can lead to skin cancer and accelerated skin aging.

More than 100,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year. Here in Suffolk, we have one of the higher rates of skin cancer and this is largely a result of sun exposure.

The most common type of skin cancer is known as basal cell cancer (also known as a ‘rodent ulcer’). Although this type of skin cancer is generally easy to treat and cure, it does need to be removed surgically, which will result in a scar. Basal cell cancers usually appear as a non-healing small lump or break in the skin, that may bleed from time to time.

The most serious and potentially life-threatening type of skin cancer is malignant melanoma. A melanoma is a cancerous mole and can cause serious health problems if not treated early. It is important to note any changes in moles and report them to your doctor.

TOP TIPS FOR SUN PROTECTION Avoid sunburn UVB is the form of UV irradiation most responsible for sunburn and has strong links to skin cancer risk. Use a sunscreen of at least SPF30 (also labelled as ‘high protection’). The higher the SPF, the greater the protection from sunburn and potential skin cancer.

Make sure your sunscreen also has UVA protection.

UVA is the major cause of premature skin aging and can also cause skin cancer. Look for the logo on the bottle (pictured below).

Use twice as much sunscreen as you think you need: Most people apply it far too thinly and so only protect their skin for a fraction of the time that they are expecting.

Make sure you reapply every couple of hours to ensure continued protection.

Take care with sunscreens that promise protection all day long from one application. Often we do not apply sunscreen as we should and if you reapply the sunscreen during the day it makes errors less of a problem.

Top up your Vitamin D levels safely.

A lack of vitamin D may cause health issues in some people. Dermatologists advise that small amounts of sunlight, such as you get through your daily activities, should be enough but a daily supplement of vitamin D during the winter months is also recommended.

Keep an eye on your moles.

Look for any new moles that have developed and for any changes (in colour size or shape) that may have developed in existing moles. If concerned, see your GP. People with fair skin or who burn easily and those with lots of moles should take particular care as they have an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

Picturing your moles is a good way of monitoring changes. With all forms of skin cancer, the earlier they are detected, the better.

Head of The Abbey and Queen’s House, Nicola Mitchell, shares with Living In … Woodbridge her teaching philosophy and future plans

S

even months after taking over the reins of The Abbey and Queen’s House, headteacher Nicola Mitchell is bursting with enthusiasm for her new role.

“Coming to Woodbridge has exceeded all my expectations,” says Nicola, who took up her headship in September last year. “And what’s more, my three children are loving it as much as I am.”

Having taught at a preparatory boarding school in Hertfordshire for 12 years and then at an academic co-ed school for fourto-13-year-olds in London for seven years, the move to The Abbey and Queen’s House has ticked all of Nicola’s boxes.

“From the outset, I was taken by the warmth of everyone at the school and could see it completely mirrored my education philosophy.

My teaching ethos isn’t something I’m prepared to compromise on; I’ve seen too many friends make that mistake.”

Taking on such a position must come with its challenges?

“Not so much challenges, but tweaks to an already great system.

We’re keen to modernise without losing everything that we are. When I was working in London I’d heard of many of our regional competitors but not of Woodbridge School and The Abbey. My aim is to make sure our reputation for offering a modern, holistic education spreads far and wide.”

Key to Nicola’s philosophy is

‘muddy knees, not bloody knees’.

“We’re so fortunate to have the outdoor environment we have. A concrete playground can’t invigorate a child like fresh air and the freedom to run around having fun, in safety.

“Much of our school day is spent outside – whether that’s at break and lunch time, playing sports or enjoying initiatives such as our forest school lessons and club. It’s all about educating the mind, body and soul, and whilst we focus on developing a strong academic backbone, we equally value everything else that makes our pupils good human beings.”

The plans to relocate Queen’s House from its existing site behind Woodbridge School to new premises in the grounds of The Abbey will form a large part of Nicola’s responsibilities going forward.

“I was lucky enough to join the

team at a time when I could review and comment on the plans. We’re still waiting on the final paperwork being completed and are still hoping for a September 2019 completion.

Between them, they realised, they had vast experience in self-development and learning as well as launching online courses, which had greatly figured in both their careers.

It was when Kathryn’s office in Ipswich was about to be moved to Cambridgeshire that she made the decision to leave and team up with Julian to launch their own business.

“We came up with the name of Brilliant Living HQ because we wanted to get over this idea that people really can live a life they want and after lots and lots of research, we came up with a ten step framework,” says Kathryn whose subsequent book Changeability: Manage your Mind - Change Your Life has fast became a number one bestseller on Amazon in the personal transformation category in both Canada and Australia as well as number two in the US and number five in the UK. From there the couple launched a series of podcast episodes (to the novice, these are like free on-demand radio programmes) initially to promote the book. At their height though, the podcasts themselves hit the number one slot in the new and noteworthy category on iTunes as they averaged a staggering 10,000 downloads a month!

Julian adds: “We’re now listened to in 169 countries though still a little disappointed we haven’t quite conquered North Korea yet!”

The couple are poised to launch their latest initiative; an online course to help people achieve their goals and transform their lives without willpower, self sabotage or fear of failure. No doubt this will become another successful chapter in their long and happy journey together.

They run the aptly-named Brilliant Living HQ from their central Woodbridge home which beams out their successful Changeability podcast – 100 episodes so far – as well as offering affirmations and online courses ranging from mindfulness to goal-setting and generally helping people make positive change.

It’s all pretty inspirational stuff but it can’t be easy working with your partner … can it?

Kathryn, who met husband Julian back in 1995 when they were both singing in a local concert together, smiles: “A lot of people say to us: ‘I don’t know how you do it, I wouldn’t last five minutes working with my husband!’ But we’ve managed to make it work.”

It seems even more incredible as the couple, who have a grown-up son Alexander, share the same hobby outside of work – often performing and singing together in local productions as part of singing group, Musicology, and members of amateur theatre group, Company of Four and the recently formed Riverside Musical Theatre Company. You might recall that Julian played King Raedwald and Kathryn, Mrs Brown in last year’s production of The King’s River.

“I really like that we work together,” says

Julian. “It’s lovely to spend time together.”

Kathryn says: “And if we need some quiet time apart, we work on separate floors at home.”

But it hasn’t always been plain sailing.

Fate played quite a hand in bringing the couple together as business partners back in 2013.

At the time, Kathryn, who has three degrees including an MA and has worked as an academic reseacher, was working long hours and driving all over the region in her role as director for a busy

“I kept wondering if there was more to life” government education funding agency.

She found work was keeping her away from her family more than she liked.

Ten years earlier she’d lost her father in a tragically unresolved hit and run car accident, the shock of which then saw her mother’s health decline over the next three years – sadly she lost her battle to cancer.

Kathryn says: “It left me feeling that life was so precious and we really don’t know what’s ahead of us. I kept sitting in the car on these long journeys to various meetings, wondering if there was more to life.”

Celebrating one of the oldest known poems in existence, the Spirit of Beowulf will bring magic, music and mystery to the banks of our beautiful River Deben.

Thursday May 3rd will host An Evening of Dragons at Woodbridge Emporium on the Thoroughfare. Friday May 4th will feature a fascinating evening of history and archaeology at the Shire Hall. On Saturday 5th May visit the Beowulf

village and Anglo Saxon market, enjoy music courtesy of the Marie Boat Stage, as well as the spectacular Beowulf festival lights on the Tid Mill. MIND BODY SPIRIT FESTIVAL 2018 21st-22nd April

“My name is Hector and I’m a Welsh Terrier.

My mum had a dog just like me before, and then one day she got talking to a lady at the school gates who said she had a Welsh Terrier that needed rehoming. Hearing that, she headed straight to Shingle Street to meet me and that was that. I had a new home.

I was still quite young then, but I’m now four and a half and have to say, life is pretty rosy.

Quite the mummy’s boy, I love hanging out with her, especially when she takes me on walks around the river, or to Sutton Heath where I give the local squirrels and pheasants a good run for their money.

But my real passion is water. Whether that’s a quick dip in the River Deben or hanging out with the family in the summer in the pool. If I hear a splash, I’m there in a flash.

My mum’s an interior designer so she got her first Welsh Terrier, Clover, because her favourite designer Abigail Ahern had one. I like to think I make a dashing companion for a designer – I’m very social so love hanging out at her studio and meeting clients.

Looking well-groomed is important to me too. I’m particularly proud of my beard; us chaps must look after our beards these days.

It’s also fair to say I enjoy my food. There’s not much I don’t like, but pizza is a favourite.

If that’s on the menu, I always bag the crust.”

Radar Retold

Making Headway

Saturday 12th May 2018 Just ahead of this year’s Action for Brain Injury Week (14th – 20th May), Headway Suffolk, which supports those with an acquired brain injury and their carers, is marking the tenth anniversary of its sponsored cycle ride in Ipswich with a new ten-mile walking route.

This year’s ride and walk both start and finish from Epsilon House at Ransomes Europark in Ipswich. The 28 mile cycle cycle route takes in Bucklesham and Felixstowe whilst walkers stay in Ipswich with a route taking them past Suffolk New College and the hospital.

We hear the armchair exercises at New Horizons are proving a real hit at the lunch club for the over-55s held at St Mary’s Church hall in Market Hall. The club, run by volunteers, also provides a lovely twocourse home-cooked meal as well as activities including art, crafts, games and entertainment - all for just £8 a session (transport available for a small additional fee). Many elderly visitors say it’s a real tonic to meet others and get out of the house. One tells us; “My husband has depression. The club has really helped him to socialise again.”

Spring into music at St Mary’s

On Sunday 15th April, St Mary’s Church, Woodbridge will be hosting a three-hour extravaganza to celebrate the evocative music featured in the highly successful film, Life on the Deben, and brings together a host of our region’s finest musicians.

Since its premiere in early December, over 3,500 people have seen Life on the Deben and tickets (£10 each) for the concert can be purchased at Woodbridge Violins, online at www.lifeonthedeben.com and on the door at St Mary’s. Refreshments will also be available.

The following week on Saturday 21st April there’s an evening recital of Beethoven and Mozart to be enjoyed, which is raising funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Distinguished soloist, Steven Savage, who has played in Australia, America and the Far East, has kindly agreed to waive his fee for this concert, enabling the entire proceeds from the event to support The Alzheimer’s Society, and its important work.

Tickets are £10 each and are also available at Woodbridge Violins. Cash only please at the box office and there’s no facility to handle phone bookings.
