elcome to our Christmas and New Year edition. When we launched last year, a few readers commented that surely we would run out of great stories to bring you. But in this, issue nine, we hope you’ll agree that we’ve put together a fantastic selection box of news, features and stories to be enjoyed in the run up to the festive season. What’s more, we’ve even managed to catch up with man of the moment, Father Christmas, on page 11.

For this issue’s home feature (pages 7 and 8), we met with the lovely Laura Middlemiss, who invited us to take a sneaky peak in her Lockwood Close home. Laura runs a successful hairdressing business from the property, is a busy mum of three and somehow has found the time to create a fantastically stylish, family home. How does she do it, we both asked.

It was also a great pleasure to share a cuppa and a preview of the stunning new film, Life on the Deben, with its producer, Malcolm Hodd.

The film (featured on pages 18 and 19) is visually beautiful but also so much more. It makes you fall back in love with where we live and reinforces that we should never take our natural landscape for granted. With New Year’s resolutions just around the corner, the pair of us will be resolving to enjoy the river more in 2018.

Kristin Caswell is one young lady that’s going places. Singing under the name Caswell, she’s already played upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, and supported Pixie Geldof. Sharing her plans with us on page seven, we think she could be the next Kate Bush.

Finally, a big thank you to local artist Nicola Coe for giving permission for us to feature her beautiful ‘Winter Thistle’ on our front cover, and to the Artisan Smokehouse in Falkenham. Read the owners’ story on page 21 and, who knows, you might just be the winner of one of their delicious hampers full of smoked delicacies.

LIFE’S RICH TAPESTRY

C

lare the Mayor has pulled off a major coup for the town along with the help of business and tourism association Choose Woodbridge.

The world’s largest steel mosaic, a replica of the world famous 64ft long Bayeux Tapestry, will be exhibited here as part of a UK tour.

It depicts William the Conqueror’s victory in the Battle of Hastings and weighing in at 350kg it’s made of three million pieces of spring steel. Made by textile technician Michael Linton, latterly

with the help of his daughter Rachel, it took 33 years to complete and has earned a place in the Guinness World Records.

Clare Perkins, Mayor of Woodbridge, who initially contacted Mr Linton to express her admiration, says: “The Bayeux Tapestry marks the Battle of Hastings – one the most significant events in British history. It is simply wonderful that 950 years later people in Suffolk will be able to enjoy this extraordinary mix of the modern and the ancient. After all, the year 1066 was an important date not just in national history, but in local history too.”

James Lightfoot, chairman of Choose Woodbridge says: “Clare the Mayor has worked hard to pull off this huge coup for the town. The amazing work is an exciting way for people to explore this part of our history. It will provide yet another reason for visitors to come to Woodbridge over

the coming months.”

The original Bayeux Tapestry is on show in Normandy and includes a ‘finale’ section that tells the story from the battle to William’s coronation on Christmas Day 1066 and portrays the battles of Fulford and Stamford Bridge.

he new Wickes store next to Tesco at Martlesham is set to throw open its doors in mid-December. The building is also home to two other outlets plus a new Costa coffee house is in the pipeline for next year.

A spokesperson for developers LondonMetric says: “We understand that Wickes will be opening their store in mid-December. Topps Tiles and Evans Cycles have signed legal agreements for the remaining space and we are awaiting planning approval for revised changes to the external frontage.

“In addition, and following local consultation and support, we submitted a planning application for a new Costa and hope to commence

construction in Spring 2018.” l A spokesperson for discount giant Home Bargains, which sells homewares, toiletries, electronics, toys and more, tells us there’s no date set for the store opening next to M&S. ur condolences to Jon Alcock, who we featured in our last issue of the magazine about his commitment to keeping Woodbridge tidy. Jon, a well-known figure in the town with his beloved Bunty the bulldog, kindly rids Woodbridge of an average of 21 bags of rubbish a week. He contacted us to say that sadly Bunty has unexpectedly passed away.

He says: “I will, as her legacy, continue to stroll around the streets and parks of this lovely town and every piece of litter picked will be in her memory, some of her ashes will be scattered on Kingston Field where we spent so much time together.”

Plans for the controversial Melton Hill development, former home to Suffolk Coastal District Council, have divided opinion in the town. Here local resident Sheena Rawlings airs her views.

oodbridge is a beautiful and historic market town which needs more houses. The people of Woodbridge would welcome new buildings just as long as they are what the town needs and it fits into the environment. We need houses for sale or rent that the ordinary workforce of the area can afford.

The Melton Hill development of monstrous ‘cheese wedges’ is not what we need or want. How on earth could anyone think they would fit in our town?

The ‘spoof’ plans that were initially put forward for consultation (and deemed acceptable by the public) are very different from the ones submitted and subsequently approved. If the developers thought these initial plans were acceptable, then why did they not submit those for the people of Woodbridge to agree to? Instead, it appears that once they had public approval they substituted the ‘cheese wedges’.

Many of us believe that Suffolk Coastal District Council (SCDC) broke their own planning rules to grant planning permission, though I believe ‘granted in principle’ is the actual term they used. The specific strategic policy rule that I believe they have broken is called SP126 which states they should consolidate a town that: ‘Retains the quality of the built environment and the character of the riverside and estuary’. And also: ‘Represents an attractive ‘gateway’ into the area of outstanding natural beauty where the scale of new development and standard of design reflects that function, particularly at Melton’.

I realise that SCDC are in a difficult position but at

the end of the day, rules are rules. They make them so they should keep them. Many letters have been sent to Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, asking, no begging, him to call in the permission. In his wisdom he has decided not to do that.

Again, many believe rules have been broken; the government’s own White Paper ‘Fixing our Broken Housing Market’ states; ‘Encourage the development of housing that meets the needs of our future population.’ And their current consultation ‘Planning the Right Homes In the Right Places’ quotes; ‘To win the support of local residents, we have to build homes that people want to live alongside as well as in.’

If the people who are in power cannot obey the very rules that they make, then what chance do the ordinary people of our town have?”

A SPOKESMAN FOR SUFFOLK COASTAL DISTRICT COUNCIL SAYS: “While we recognise design is a subjective matter, Suffolk Coastal’s Planning Committee followed a clear democratic process in granting conditional approval for the development at Melton Hill at its meeting on 13 October 2017. This was a complex issue, which had attracted considerable public interest, but the matter was fully debated by the councillors. The fact that all the guidelines were correctly followed in this case has been demonstrated by the Secretary of State’s subsequent decision not to ‘call in’ the Committee’s decision.”

With a beautifully stylish house and booming home business, Laura Middlemiss shares the secrets to her success Pictures by Jemma Watts

T

ucked away in Lockwood Close, just off Castle Street, is a house that’s full of surprises. Not only is it base for highly successful hairdresser Laura Middlemass and her Emilie Riley salon, but a total renovation has transformed it into a beautiful contemporary family home.

“The first-time people come to have their hair cut, they often say ‘wow, this isn’t what I expected” laughs Laura.

Since meeting four years ago, Laura and her now husband, Adam, have transformed their three-storey Eighties property. “Adam did the ground floor extension before we met, but since then the house has pretty much been totally revamped. It was beige everywhere, but that’s all gone. Now it’s pops of colour such as the green in the kitchen and orange in the lounge, against a grey background.”

Home to Laura, Adam and children Emilie, 11, Harrison Riley 9 and William 2, the house oozes understated minimalism, combined with comfort and that all important family feel. “This is a busy house as we’ve also got two dogs – Lola Belle and puppy Zero – so it has to be a practical space to live in too.” From the contemporary garden, to the height wall in the kitchen and the toy bins in the lounge the children’s belongings mix with

the tasteful decoration. “There’s nothing like a good storage bucket at the end of the day to scoop up toys” says Laura with a smile.

“One of the most transformational things we’ve done is remove the solid walls surrounding the staircase and stair lift, and install glass balustrades. This brings so much light in to the house.

We’ve also moved the kitchen to the ground floor to create a great sized lounge on the middle floor.”

The decision to launch her own business two years ago meant further revamping of the property. “We reworked the garage and a small utility room to create my salon, but managed to retain a third of the garage for all important storage.”

Decorated in a mix of Scandi and contemporary, with a good helping of quirky and individual pieces, Laura knows what she likes and doesn’t restrict herself to one style. “We buy lots of pieces locally, from Vanil, Global Trading and from Saxmundham, where I was brought up.

We also bought a great piece of art from The Angel the other day, as they’re now displaying works from local artists. I like the idea of never knowing where you’re going to find an interesting piece.”

Asked about her favourite parts of the house, Laura says: “I love the entrance hall as it welcomes people in to our home and

to my salon. I also love the kitchen, which is the hub of the house.

“The kitchen and good food is important to all of us.” The day Laura invited us to do the photo shoot, she was planning to make fresh pasta with Emilie and Harrison on their return from school.

“Both cook with me one evening a week and these days Harrison has Yorkshire puddings nailed, and Emilie makes a great burger from scratch.”

The mirrors up the stairs are a key feature to the hallway and have particular significance for the couple. “Every time we go away or there’s a special event we buy a mirror to mark the occasion. The two little mirrors at the bottom of the stairs we bought when Adam proposed.

Another marks the day I bought my wedding dress, and others are from our travels.”

As you’d expect Laura’s salon is as stylish as the rest of the house. “I always had a clear idea of how I wanted it to look; a mix of industrial, French and romantic.

There were obvious practicalities that needed consideration, but also I needed to create a space that my male clients feel comfortable in. “ Since opening two years ago, Laura’s business which is named after her two elder children, is booming. “I was a single mum when I put myself through

a hairdressing apprenticeship and college, but always said that if I ever started my own business I’d name it after my kids. When I launched they were so proud to see their names, but it always makes me smile when people call and ask to speak with Emilie.”

With a host of future plans, Laura continues: “I see Emilie Riley very much as a brand, and who knows where it will take me; perhaps it’s got the potential to be the next John Oliver, or Toni & Guy. First steps would be to have somebody work with me, perhaps an apprentice, and then in the longer term look at having a salon, with a great reputation of course.”

Asked whether all the decor decisions rest with her, Laura quickly says: “Not at all. People don’t believe us, but they really are joint decisions. We both just seem to go for the same look and have similar tastes. It helps that we both believe your home should be fun, so we’re not adverse to changing things about.”

Christmas for this family will be spent at home, “That’s how we like it,” adds Laura.

“This year our great friend Rev Kevan McCormack, who is William’s godfather, is joining us for Christmas lunch, which will be great fun. Simple family time and the chance to enjoy our guilty pleasure – a jigsaw puzzle with a glass of wine, is how we like Christmas. How rock and roll is that?”

Tell us about your role.

Ho ho ho! Is that a joke? Surely you must know what I do by now? If you don’t, where have you been?

It’s the busiest time of year for me and the elves, making sure that everyone gets their correct presents and has a magical festive time.

Any new plans for the business?

I have thought on many occasions about computerising it all, but the elves aren’t having any of it. They are real sticklers for tradition. So we all work off handwritten lists, but we get by.

What is the best part of the job?

Seeing the children’s faces light up when they open their presents on Christmas morning. Sometimes we hang around and peek through living room

windows as they excitedly rip open their presents. It makes the frostbite and late nights worth it.

Any downsides?

Mrs Christmas insists Rudolph the reindeer and I start our diets in January after all those mince pies, carrots and treats kindly left out for us. Rudolph is far more disciplined than me and usually loses all his weight within the month – but that’s partly because he’s much more active than me. It takes me until at least November to lose the weight again, and then it all goes back on in December!

Any special events happening in Woodbridge this Christmas?

Yes – at 6.30pm on Wednesday, 20th December, it’s the annual Woodbridge Carol Service, held on Market Hill. Everyone is welcome and I’ll be there to hand out treats for the children after the carols. We hold a collection for a children’s charity each year, and this year it will be for Macmillan supporting young people in Suffolk.

What do you love most when you come to Woodbridge?

Without doubt, this is a unique place. It’s not only a friendly town, it’s beautiful too. You’ve got the marvellous River Deben, all those fabulous restaurants and pubs, and some of the best shops around for miles. If I was ever going to retire (which I’m not), it would be to here!

If you could have one wish granted for the town, what would it be?

here have been various conflicting reports on the London and country property market over recent months. Our experience in the country has been a steady trade in the £500,000 to £1,000,000 mark and an uptick in interest over the £1,000,000 barrier. K

ristin Caswell’s star is most certainly in the ascendant. Without doubt, this talented singersongwriter is going places and her unswerving devotion to her craft is humbling. By her own admission, many of her contemporaries in their early twenties are now earning a decent crust in their chosen career path yet Caswell, as she’s simply known, has opted for a much harder route. Earning money as a waitress and ploughing most, if not all, of her earnings into her beloved music, she admits it can feel like an uphill battle at times but, like many artists, her creativity is what spurs her on.

Her debut EP is called The Shadow Aspect and it’s well worth a listen. In testament to her skill her music is doing really well on the giant music streaming service Spotify - her songs have made it onto its Chilled Pop Hits playlist. Indeed, all of her tracks on Spotify have a staggering half a million streams … and counting! If none of this makes much sense to you, fear not, as you can buy her EP on good old-fashioned CD format in the Thoroughfare at her mum Mandy’s Whizzy Wallop concession which sells vinyl music at Vintage 49.

Caswell describes her magically mellow music as: “A warm downtempo vibe, a mix of real instrumentation and electronic elements. Alternative pop/soul with a tangible jazz influence.”

Frankly, we think she may well be the next Kate Bush … and we’re not alone.

Clash magazine wrote: “Fusing past with present, classic songwriting with

aural possibilities, the pop newcomer has swiftly become a viral success.”

Not only has she played upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and has supported Pixie Geldof but she’s also featured on BBC Introducing Suffolk with numerous radio plays as well as a live recording session with them.

“I moved here two and a half years ago from London,” says Caswell as she cradles a soya Americano at Honey + Harvey.

“Moving to Woodbridge was the best thing I’ve done! It was meant to be a temporary move to live with my parents and save some money. But the music scene here is just brilliant and full of

talented people and my own music started to go really well. I’ve met some great people and so I decided to stay on, there’s so much going on here and it’s not as fast-paced as London. I feel I’ve been creatively able to explore myself a bit more.”

Growing up in south east London Caswell was 14 when she landed a coveted place at the highly acclaimed Brit School for performing arts to study music. Indeed, several of her school contemporaries have since found fame including music stars Ella Eyre and King Krule. But her friends outside of the business are now mostly enjoying a good living in London while she’s learnt to sacrifice much for her work.

“I had to save up my wages to bring my EP out, every last penny went into it,” she smiles. “It would be great to get some funding or an investor in the future, so I could have some financial support.”

She’s currently working on her next EP and is planning a new single next year.

In a full-length feature film, the River Deben gives up its secrets for all to enjoy.

We met with producer Malcolm Hodd to learn more about this amazing venture

hile views of the Deben are part of everyday life in Woodbridge, how many of us know the astonishing secrets our river holds and what we need to do to protect its future?

The answers to these questions and more can be found in the beautifully compiled feature-length documentary, Life on the Deben. If you didn’t manage to get a ticket to the sell-out showings of the film at the start of December, don’t despair as it is available on DVD, making a perfect Christmas present for everyone who holds the Deben dear.

With journalist and former Woodbridge resident John McCarthy tracing the entire length of the river, from its source near Debenham to Bawdsey and Felixstowe Ferry where it empties into the North Sea, the idea behind the film belongs to its producer, Malcolm Hodd and film maker/director Tim Curtis.

Malcolm, an ex-journalist and trustee of the Woodbridge Riverside Trust, explains: “The genesis of the idea came about in the pub. Enjoying a pint, we were reflecting on what a shame it was that so many of the people that live and breathe the river were starting to pass away, and that all their memories would disappear.”

Very quickly the idea began to take shape and John McCarthy, an old friend of Malcolm and Tim’s, agreed to be involved. “Filming

took place over two years and, as you can imagine, was very weather dependent. Also Tim, as cinematographer, is a perfectionist so there were lots of 5am starts to get the best shots.”

Life on the Deben tells the story of the river from the Celtic times to the present day. Pulling together a host of experts, including detectorists and archaeologists, it sheds new light on how the Deben was at the heart of one of England’s great early kingdoms.

“Throughout the filming we came across facts and stories never previously documented,” says Malcolm. “For example, as the river passes through the land now owned by Aspalls, Henry Chevalier Guild explains how his grandmother remembered salmon being caught in its upper reaches back in 1902.

“So many experts were also happy to share their understanding of the Deben. Among them were the Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk County Council’s team of detectorists, who have been undertaking excavations at Rendlesham and believe it to be the site of an East Anglian royal settlement, documented by the Venerable Bede in the eighth century.”

“The discoveries at Rendlesham are of the highest importance, changing our ideas of south east Suffolk, the East Anglian kingdom,

“But boat building in the centre of town goes way back. During the 1600s, men-of-war ships were built in the centre of town for the Navy.”

Without giving all the film’s secrets away, Life on the Deben is a visual feast and reinforces the importance the river plays both in our history and the future of our region. As John says: “I lived beside and sailed on the Deben for many years but had never appreciated its hidden depths before making this film.”

Arnott’s book, Suffolk Estuary: The Story of the River Deben, for reference, Life on the Deben takes John McCarthy on a journey that includes canoeing the upper reaches of the river; a visit to Robertsons, the oldest boatyard in Woodbridge; and a trip to Alderton Church to see secret passages frequented by the river’s smugglers, and which lead to the pub and the manor house.

George has been looking after boats coming into Ramsholt every day for the last 33 years, having taken over the job from his father, ‘Old George’. He also found out about little known Goseford, a medieval port that was sited between Alderton and Bawdsey and which features on a map dating back to 1250.

Malcolm continues: “We also managed to get hold of some fantastic old footage of Whisstocks in its heyday. Having built over 700 boats, launchings were a big deal for the town. All the yard men would be invited to attend and people from across town would come down to the river

Malcolm adds: “After two years of filming, we had over 100 hours of footage and it was heartbreaking what we had to leave out, but we’re delighted with the final film. We’re also pretty sure this is the most comprehensive overview of the whole of the River Deben ever made. MOVIE MEMORIES The film’s narrator, journalist John McCarthy, shares what he enjoyed most about the making of Life on the Deben: “There were many highlights for me, but what really stands out was discovering so much of the river’s ancient history; imagining how it would have looked up at Rendlesham when Raedwald was king and the place, now so utterly tranquil, would have been a centre of culture and power.

“Likewise, standing on the shore at Bawdsey Ferry and trying to visualise the vast expanse of what was Goseford port in medieval times.”

A resident of Woodbridge for just over 13 years, John explains what he misses about town: “Apart from our friends and neighbours, I think I miss most just walking through the town’s streets, from our home on Burkitt Road, through the Market Square and on down to the river.”

f you’re planning to celebrate a special event in 2018, Ufford Park Hotel is the place to head to. With a five-strong dedicated events team and rooms available to suit every occasion, from small intimate gathering lunches to full-on birthday bashes, the focus is always on making a guest’s celebration one to remember.

Tarnia Robertson, managing director of Ufford Park Hotel, says: “As a family-run independent hotel, doing the best for our guests is our priority. We’ve experience of hosting all types of events including birthdays, baby showers, prom parties, hen and stag dos and end of life celebrations. Whatever the event, nothing is too much trouble.”

With rooms available to cater for large events up to 250 people (the Deben Suite), or more intimate spaces such as The Aldous Room, renamed after Tarnia’s parents when they retired from the business, every customer has their own dedicated coordinator, taking care of every aspect of their event.

“Guests often say it’s only when they start talking with us that they realise what they want from their event. Our little black book of contacts means that we’ve got a direct line to tried and tested suppliers, whether that’s floristry, room decorations such as chair covers, or a disco. For example, we’ve worked with Gareth Ambrose of Flame Entertainment in Ipswich for many years and he is our go-to DJ,” continues Tarnia.

The growing popularity of school proms has seen a rise in after-prom parties at the hotel. “Next year, for 16-year-old proms we’re offering a package that includes delicious mocktails, a DJ, and security to ensure the party is for guests only.”

Modelled on Florida-style adventure golf courses, Congo Rapids Lost World is located in the grounds of the hotel and is open to all ages, but makes a great birthday party treat with a difference.

Tarnia continues: “These parties are proving hugely popular and are

perfect for 5–12-year olds.”

Catering for between six and 20 guests, the £12.50-per-head party lasts approximately three hours and includes a round of adventure golf before returning to the hotel to continue the celebrations with a children’s meal.

“Locally, we’re one of the only venues able to offer such a diverse range of event rooms, combined with accommodation for those coming from further afield,” continues Tarnia. “We’re also often recommended by other local venues, who aren’t able to offer overnight accommodation for their guests.”

The first-class service offered by staff is what sets the hotel apart.

“We get so many lovely comments about our staff from event clients and guests on TripAdvisor, and whilst we’re a three-star hotel, money can’t buy the service we’re able to offer,” laughs Tarnia.

As head of operations, Max Moussa is responsible for ensuring everything runs to plan. “On average we host over 10 events a week, which also includes business training and conferences, so things can get very busy. Our focus is always on ensuring there is no overlap, and that everything comes together seamlessly on the day.”

The events team is also very experienced in arranging end of life celebrations, as Tarnia explains: “These extremely individual events are always handled with respect and sensitivity. Requests on these occasions can be varied but we work closely with clients to ensure their every need is met. Also, because of the range of event rooms we have, we’re often able to accommodate such celebrations at short notice.”

But, you don’t need a big celebration to come and enjoy everything the hotel has to offer.

he start of a new year often gets us thinking about resolutions and goals, but the sad fact is that these good intentions often fail within weeks, if not days.

I’ve worked with individuals, teams and organisations to enable them to get more of what is important to them.

As well as working internationally with some of the world’s biggest brands, I’ve also been helping local businesses and people to develop theirs skills so they can be more successful.

The question I get asked most often is: ‘What does a performance coach actually do?’ I like variety in my job so it can mean performance coaching professional athletes to develop the mental side of their game so they can get into the zone. I’ve even coached Olympic athletes and premiership footballers.

I teach people how to negotiate better, sell more, manage better, perform successfully in an interview and I’m just as likely to be helping someone overcome a fear of flying.

I’m passionate about helping people set themselves up for success and have advice for anyone who wants to set themself a compelling goal or resolution. The key is to set yourself PURE goals:

State the goal in the POSITIVE. What you WANT as opposed to what you don’t want. What will you see, hear and feel. Our brains are goal seeking, so make sure you’re clear what success looks like.

Make sure it’s UNDER your control. You can’t set a goal to win the lottery

as it’s not under your control.

Make sure you know what RESOURCES you need – like time, energy, money, a plan, the first step.

Make sure it’s ECOLOGICAL – does it fit in with everything else that is important in your life?

I believe that there is only ONE reason why people don’t achieve something that’s really important to them and that’s because they really don’t want it (at the moment).

Watch out for excuses, the biggest one being; ‘I don’t have time’. Time isn’t a reason. It’s an excuse. If you want to, you’ll find a way, if not you’ll find an excuse.

The way you speak to yourself and the questions you ask of yourself can determine the outcome. For example, think of something you’d love to be able to do but feel there is something holding you back and answer these three questions: 1. Why can’t you?

2. What would happen if you could and how would it feel?

3. What specifically would have to happen for you to do this?

Chances are, question one got you making excuses, question two opened up the possibility and question three made you think about actual steps you can take.

Commencing where The Force Awakens left off, the eighth episode in the Star Wars franchise sees Rey (Daisy Ridley) learning how to use and harness The Force under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

They then join up with Leia (the late Carrie Fisher, in her final film performance), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) to head into battle with the First Order.

Star Wars film as director, and it must be good as he has just been signed up to direct a whole new Star Wars trilogy to be set in a different corner of the Star Wars universe!

“My name’s Sky, I’m 18 months old, and I’m a cheeky, friendly girl, although some people only see the German shepherd in me – or maybe it’s the Rottweiler - and look scared stiff!

I can bark like crazy if I hear a noise outside or I don’t know someone, but I’m just protecting my pack. It’s all in the genes! I’m actually a great softie.

My family adopted me five months ago after my first owner, who was lovely, couldn’t give me all the exercise I need. I now live in Woodbridge with mum Sarah, dad Stewart, Gemma, 15, and Sophie, seven. I love them all to bits, and am never happier than when I’m trying to wedge myself onto one of their laps. All seven stone of me!

I go to work with Dad and I’m a stickler for routine – I get a bit narky if he’s late in the morning.

After all, we’ve got customers to see and cars to fix! Dad’s a mechanic and we actually work in the garden in his workshop where he sees all his customers.

It’s a great job and once people have got over my barking, they seem happy to oblige me with a tummy rub. Life’s a beach really!”

Otter Tracking

RSPB Minsmere Wednesday 17th January, Sunday 28th January, Tuesday 13th February If you’re an early bird, why not sign up to go out with one of the RSPB Minsmere volunteers as he carries out his regular otter surveys? Starting at 7.30am this two-hour adventure will take you off the beaten track to look for spraints (droppings) and footprints. You’ll learn how otters are monitored through their tracks and signs, as well as check the trail camera footage. Who knows, you may be lucky enough to spot one of these elusive mammals.

Keeping it Local Saturday 16th December Farmers’ Market, Woodbridge Community Hall If you’re a fan of the Farmers’ Market and supporting local producers, you won’t want to miss Matthew Driver’s Christmas café. Hosted at Woodbridge Farmers’ Market in the Community Hall, Matthew will be using produce from the market stallholders and creating a menu which includes fluffy pancakes with a seasonal twist and loads of other festive delights.
