W
e can hardly believe that it’s been just over a year since we first launched Living In … Woodbridge magazine! From the outset, we were overwhelmed by all the lovely messages of praise and support which we still regularly receive from readers and advertisers alike. But we can’t take full credit as all we have done is held up a mirror to our beautiful town and reflected it back in the pages of this magazine. We are delighted to announce that we now have a fabulous all-singing, all-dancing website, www.livinginsuffolk.com, which has even more features, events and news from the local area and further afield. You can also read back issues of the magazine too. In this sizzling summer issue we meet town teen Holly Keenan and brother Joe who are making a splash in the extreme sports world of kitesurfing. And we have welcomed on board our new beauty editor, Alice Manning, who talks about her punishing exercise regime, proving there really is no gain without pain. And we also met up with delightful actor James Cartwright who is listened to by millions on Radio 4 in his role as PC Harrison Burns in The Archers. Woodbridge has long been celebrated for its artistic community and in this issue we met up with not one but five talented local artists who all told us about their inspiration. We chose Abi Fawcus’s stunning Seascape as our front cover for this issue. We’d like to say an extra big thank you to multi-talented Abi as she also designed our wonderful new website. Following a post on our lively Facebook page we were inundated with messages of support for local legend Pudgey Wells when we announced he was celebrating his 95th birthday. It was an honour to meet Pudgey and hear all his tales of an extraordinary and, at times, dramatic life, punctuated by his ceaseless acts of kindness which local residents have never forgotten. t’s a year since Woodbridge’s youth centre building in The Avenue was declared unfit for purpose and condemned. Months since its inhabitants were set adrift to find temporary shelter the best they could (the youth charity Just42 in portacabins on the site), we got down to the serious business of redesigning and rebuilding. Although known as the ‘youth centre’ and as the base for Just42, the centre was home to many groups with a youth, arts or educational aspect – as well as playing a very important part in young people’s social care as a ‘safe house’ for children in difficult circumstances. It was invaluable. We’ve now been offered a once-in-a-lifetime chance to create something new and purpose-built, something that will give the opportunity for old and new users to continue the community youth and arts activities which are so valued – and so badly under-provisioned – in Woodbridge. So – we’re planning to build a new youth and arts centre. Suffolk County Council has offered the site on a long lease at a peppercorn rent if we can produce a good business case within the year. You think things
have gone quiet? Not a bit of it! Representatives of 1st Woodbridge Scouts, Just42, local artists, and the community have got together under my chairmanship to form a Community Interest Company: Jetty Lane CIC. Behind the scenes we’re working flat out to get a full business plan to present to Suffolk County Council by the deadline in December. We are lucky to have the support of the Seckford Foundation helping us make our case. We want to work clever, and use the footprint of the old centre more efficiently to build a centre with two halls: one to house 1st Woodbridge Scouts in the evenings and for hire by youth charities during the day. There will be office space for Just42; up to 12 artists’ studios for rent to bring in rental income to run the premises; a ‘safe space’ area for young people to replace that lost when the centre was pulled down; and – importantly – a larger flexi-space hall, for hire by other youth groups, the local community and with provision for artists to run workshops and exhibitions! Provision for the arts and youth sectors is very poor in Woodbridge. And with the population set to increase, these are amenities
we absolutely need to preserve and modernise, not lose. Arts and youth initiatives are natural bedfellows. This centre will provide opportunities to unite creative communities and young people in the town through workshops, activities and other forms of art engagement.

Flying high above Woodbridge, the Air Cadets HQ is the place to be for those with a passion for adventure …
W
e are flying at an altitude of 3,000ft just over Woodbridge admiring the River Deben, which snakes below us as we excitedly point out landmarks. It’s an exhilarating experience – even if it’s not the real thing! We are lucky to be guests of Woodbridge Air Squadron 432 for an exclusive peak at their fantastic flight simulator, paid for by Lottery funding and providing vital training. Flying Officer John Kay, pictured here with his cadets, says the simulator is a great way of providing lifelike flying experience before the real thing. Their building, known as the Drill Hall on Quayside, is shared with the Army Cadet Force and actually boasts a drill hall, three flight classrooms, two offices, a mess room and even a live range. “It’s a Ministry of Defence building,” says John. “Here at the Air Cadets we are a bit biased because we do the

field stuff like the Army and we do a bit of sailing like the Navy and of course we also do the flying!” It’s a hive of activity for the uniformed youngsters, aged between 13 and 18, who happily tell us about the valuable skills they’ve learned here as well as feeling part of a wider community. They certainly live up to their squadron’s motto of ‘swift and sure’. “What we’re trying to do is promote and foster an interest in aviation,” says John. “But more importantly it’s about giving youngsters a purpose and something to do, it’s all about the team working on confidence building and leadership skills,” he adds. “As well as getting them ready for the modern challenges of adult life.” l For more information on the Air Cadets in Woodbridge, who meet every Wednesday evening between 7 and 9.30pm, call between those times on 01394 384721. A HEALING TOUCH Val Chater opens her heart and her home to Living In ... Woodbridge magazine Pictures by John Ferguson

e are sitting in Val Chater’s serene study, with breathtaking views which sweep down to Martlesham Creek, and talking about her inspirational work. Val offers, amongst other things, an extraordinary treatment called Thought Field Therapy to her clients which helps to erase trauma, phobia and anxiety through a series of tapping on specific acupressure points with their fingertips whilst thinking about their issue. It’s a fascinating therapy – as powerful as it is simple – which was developed by American psychologist Dr Roger Callahan in the Eighties. Clearly Val’s sessions have been invaluable to many people who see her for all sorts of fears and phobias. “The two most common things I treat are the fear of flying and anxiety where people feel out of control and panic,” says Val who works from Framfield House Surgery on Ipswich Road. “Simple problems can often be removed in one session. More complex issues, and those affected by toxins, may take a few sessions with corresponding shifts in lifestyle.” One only needs to look at her client testimonials available in her folder in the waiting room at Framfield clinic to see just what an impact this therapy can have on people. One of her clients says: “It has
made an enormous difference. I got rid of a pile of anger, stress, hate. The feeling afterwards was amazing. It changed my life for the better.” Another writes: “I feel different about problems that to me were stuck. I had sorted a lot out in my head but just couldn’t let go of the past.” Val agrees it does sound almost too good to be true to tap various parts of your body to release trapped trauma or tension. “It really is that simple,” she smiles. “Trauma or shock disrupts the energy field and tapping can help you let it go. We have been programmed in the West to believe that it takes a long time to heal but it’s just not true. A trauma can happen in seconds and it can be undone in seconds but as that’s not within our normal experience, we don’t understand that. But you will never really know until you experience it. “The effect of Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is like deprogramming an information code within the Thought Field which deletes the negative emotion at root level. TFT does not change a thought, it simply deactivates the negative response to that thought. Nothing else changes; memories and learning remain the same.” Although Val is quick to stress that this treatment will not eliminate grief. “That kind of loss is different,” she

says. “That is more of an individual process and adjustment takes time, although the tapping can help support us by taking the edge off the emotional pain or even physical pain, thus making life more manageable.” Val uses TFT alongside her many other skills – she’s qualified in anatomy, physiology and massage as well as being trained in counselling, aromatherapy, shiatsu and healing. She blends kinesiology, which is all about the movement of energy, or chi as the Chinese call it, with her other treatments. The mother-of-five says that her family, like most people, were sceptical at first but have all come round to using her treatments. “The great thing about tapping is it’s a tool which people can use themselves; it’s helped me enormously,” she says. It was her youngest son’s repeated ear infections and antibiotic prescriptions as a child which first drove her to look beyond the conventional western approach to health. “Homeopathy is gentle and effective and that helped him to get over the ear infection,” she recalls. “There’s so much we can do naturally to help ourselves.” Val’s quest eventually saw her take part on a spiritual healing course in Hadleigh which was like a light bulb moment for her. It was,
looking back, in her genes, as her own mother had always been interested in spirituality and her uncle was a well-known faith healer who ran Brentwood Spiritualist Church. Val smiles. “He would say: ‘Healing is just love!’” Val used her healing in voluntary work with cancer patients at the Ipswich Hospital. Her subsequent studies in shiatsu, with its roots steeped in ancient traditional Chinese medicine, opened up a whole new world and soon the former art teacher was using her healing skills to treat clients. Now this self-confessed foodie, who is a vegetarian, says she’s never happier than when she’s pottering around in her beautifully-tended garden, which covers an acre in all. She grows many vegetables like chard, kale, broccoli, runner beans and beetroot and loves standing in her magnificent kitchen throwing together a fabulous salad, smoothie, or in winter making soups and stews for whichever child is visiting. While we are there her gorgeous one-year-old granddaughter, Tyler, toddles around behind us happily as we all admire her free spirit. The 12 chickens are also valuable members of the growing family and each has its own name. Val says the house was built in 1935 and has been a happy home for the past 30 years. Her husband Ian has beautifully renovated the

place over the years. Artwork by various members of the family, including her daughters Bella and Claire, and Val herself, adorn the walls. In the hallway she also points out an original piece by Woodbridge’s Dom Pattinson, now a collectable street artist. Her study is painted a cool, calming blue and is presided over by a huge life-sized bust of Ghandi.
“A trauma can happen in seconds and it can be undone in seconds …” “I was walking along Piccadilly in London and stumbled on a peace exhibition at St James’s Church and I immediately felt myself drawn into the place like a magnet,” she says. “I was so moved by the beauty of the piece which is sculpted out of terracotta clay. The artist was based in Cornwall and she had also done a masterpiece of Mother Teresa.” Art is clearly a running theme in Val’s life and she says she no longer paints and is more likely to make sculptures out of clay and wire. “Perhaps I will come back to it in my dotage,” she smiles before adding. “I think as long as you are using your creative energy, whether it’s gardening or even cooking, then that’s a good thing.” l For more information on Val’s work, go to: www.tftval.co.uk or call her on 07775 600230. itter, faster, stronger has been my motto since I started training with personal trainer Luke Read of Airborne Fit last October. I kept hearing about Luke’s military style circuit sessions and, in a bid to shift my baby weight, I decided to give it a go. I was nervous before my first session and rightly so. I recently joined 54 other Airborne Fit members – who are totally inspiring to be around by the way – and took part in an Insane Terrain 10k obstacle race near Cambridge. We’re talking uneven ground, neck-high muddy water, six-foot climbing walls and hay bale after hay bale to hurdle over. I never thought I would enter a competition like this, let alone complete it, but one of the best things Luke has instilled in me is positive thinking and a ‘can do’ attitude. Lancashire lad James Cartwright, who plays PC Harrison Burns in The Archers, talks to Living In … Woodbridge about life in his newly adopted town How long have you lived here? My lass Sarah and I moved into the town last August after living in south London. It was that usual thing of life becoming hectic in London; we were working hard and out a lot in the evenings. My biggest fear was that there wouldn’t be much to do here but that’s not the case at all. When you’re in London and you think of Suffolk you tend to think of farmers drinking cider out of jugs on upturned barrels!
could go out every night of the week if you wanted. It’s also got a strong arts and music scene. I’ve slowly started to fall in love with it. And I love the weather here; it’s so warm and it never rains! Every time I phone my mum oop North it’s always raining there! It’s also friendly; everyone says hello in the mornings. Actually, Ambridge is like a smaller, quainter version of Woodbridge in a way – it has the same parallels.
We are like that sometimes! So, why did you choose Woodbridge? Sarah is originally from here and I’m from Chorley in Lancashire. Sarah’s family have businesses in the area – they run the lovely jewellery and women’s fashion shops based in Aldeburgh, Holt and Southwold called Tilley and Grace – and she decided to come back and work for them. At first I felt like I was moving to another planet. But moving here from London was like when you’ve been stood outside in the freezing cold then you have a warm bath and you slowly defrost and then you really relax! In London you don’t realise how stressed up to your eyeballs you’ve become. Even just travelling a short distance can be a nightmare.
That’s like music to our ears! So, do you travel a lot? I travel to London twice a week for work now. On a good day it’s an hour and 20 minutes on the train which is no problem. I haven’t lost a massive amount in time from when we lived in New Cross. We record The Archers in Birmingham and we are called as and when our characters are needed.
What makes Woodbridge so special? There’s so much to do here, you
How did you get into acting? I fell into it really. After landing an agent, I was cast in a Danny Boyle film alongside Timothy Spall and that was it. I was then spotted in a play in London for the part of PC Harrison Burns. It’s the best job in the world. If you’re doing a play then you have this intense period of rehearsals and then everyone gets stressed around press night as the reviews can make or break
it, and if you’re in TV then a day’s filming can cost a fortune. But The Archers is just so relaxing! When you go in, everyone’s like, ‘Ah, good morning!’ Someone will bring some macaroons to share in the green room and we all sit around telling each other funny stories. I want to stay there forever!

Personally it’s got to be the first time I ever tasted chips; professionally it was the first time I ever did a play when I got a part in The History Boys at the National. Standing on that stage I thought I’d be fine but I was shaking all over and literally had to hold on to the table! Tell us a secret about yourself. I’m addicted to chips. I love them. You may have spotted the wonderful new roof at Martlesham Antiques, which replaced the original 100-year-old thatch. BIG PLANS IN STORE FOR MARKET HILL The 17th century Bull Inn, which has reverted to using its traditional name, is undergoing something of a makeover. Owners Heather and Paul Barker have been busy renovating the lovely old building, once a coaching inn, and have big plans for the front outside space which is currently used for parking. “We feel an outside seating area would enhance Market Hill, giving it a cosmopolitan feel, and help attract both visitors and locals back to what was once the hub of Woodbridge,” says Heather. And as you can see from

The couple will be putting a planning application in soon. “Hopefully it will be all systems go,” says Heather, who says they refurbished several bedrooms earlier this year and plan to continue their programme of work in the autumn. “In addition, we’ve created a new snug area in the bar and are due to start refurbishing the restaurant and main bar areas shortly,” she adds. PORTRAIT OF THE The town has long been celebrated for its thriving artistic community, here Living In … Woodbridge meets five local artists and showcases their work … LISA BERRY (5) “I have always painted inside my head. I paint from my imagination and my images are semi-abstract and sometimes totally abstract. I see in my work the influence of the gardens I work in - the light through the petals of a poppy, the influence of our Suffolk landscapes, of mist, water and reflections. I see images from my childhood – a tomboy Woodbridge girl born in 1964 – campfires in Martlesham wood, canoeing on the Deben and the annual fayre on Fen Meadow; all these things I glimpse in the emotional landscape of my paintings. Beyond the word ‘figments’ and a number allotted for identification, I leave my work untitled: each painting starts with an emptying of my mind and the associations I make with the finished piece seem to be equal to the associations anyone else makes. Asked what I am most proud of, I get a thrill from seeing my paintings hung together in a gallery and, furthermore, I love to see my paintings beautifully placed in somebody’s home. I paint in a studio created from our smallest bedroom and enjoy the chance to stand back and look at my paintings at a distance in the good light of a gallery. ISSUE ONE… SUMMER 2016

I paint almost entirely in water-based media nowadays and whether working outdoors with the adrenalised challenge of constant changes in light, shadows or tides, or working from photos, which is a little more relaxed, all the thinking and technical decisions happen first, and once nailed, the wonderful, risky and unpredictable process kicks off – rather like an England football match but without the pessimism! Sometimes, I work more intuitively, with little idea what’s going to happen. My imagination conjures ideas out of the interaction of water and paint, usually
leading to what my neighbour Carl calls my more ‘prog’ stuff! For two or three hours you live the experience of the painting, as if in a kind of trance, and for this reason alone, painting is its own reward. METHOD Shake all the ingredients – excluding the soda water – in a cocktail shaker filled three-quarters with ice. Shake until chilled, strain into a tall glass filled with cracked ice. Top off with soda water and give a gentile stir. This is a long refreshing drink with citrus, botanical and floral notes; a great choice for keeping cool on the hot days to come. The inspiration for this drink comes from the summer hedgerows that were brimming with elderflower especially in the Suffolk meadows around Woodbridge. For me, summer starts when the elderflower is out, as I love to make my own cordial. Elderflower pairs well with limoncello and the flavour of lemongrass in the Rising Sun Gin adds an intriguing complexity to the drink. After all, how can you have summer without gin? n between acting and scriptwriting, Suffolk mixologist Francis Thurstun-Crees spends his time designing and perfecting sumptuous cocktails. He’s even dedicated one exclusively to Living In … Woodbridge readers which is sure to hit the spot this summer! Here’s he tells us what inspires him: “I have always been intrigued by cocktails; I love the style and social atmosphere around them. I enjoy the whole performance in making the drink (I do indulge in some cocktail flair) – I probably watched too many James Bond films!
Technically, the first thing I ever tasted in this world was a cocktail. The midwife gave me Rescue Remedy when I was born, a concoction of herbs and flowers blended with brandy. You could say I was hooked from the very start. I started a cocktail blog last year as I wanted a platform to show some of my inventions and to write about blending cocktail ingredients as well as covering the history of some classic drinks. I create drinks for private parties; I always like to create a drink that is unique to the event. For example, creating a bride and groom’s drink
for a wedding or something naughty for a hen party. My future plans are for drama school, where I will be starting in October. I plan to juggle both my performing arts and my passion for cocktails. I will keep mixing and creating, although on a student budget of course! I am writing a script for a play revolving around cocktails and hope to serve them to audience members. But Tony was so experienced, having worked in the industry since the Seventies, he totally reassured me it wasn’t that and showed me how to cut out the damaged timber and replace it.” David called Tony in again once he’d bought the house, when he discovered black mould and damp behind a wardrobe. “Straight away he identified single skin brickwork where we’d removed a door which had left us with a cold wall,” he says. “I was very impressed with his obvious knowledge and also I really enjoyed putting it right and felt I had a natural aptitude for it.” David has always been interested in how things work – a self-taught builder, he’s totally renovated two properties, is currently on his third, and can rewire, plumb and plaster a property to a good standard. It was 2015 and he felt he’d risen as far as he could in shipping, working in freight forwarding. His real skill, he thought, lay in customer service. “I loved nothing more

ollowing the huge success of the SpringFest music festival at the end of May, the myFestival boys, aka DJ Marco Spina and partner Ian Matthews are gearing up for their next big thing – SummerFest. “We were so pleased with this year’s SpringFest” says Ian. “We had masses of visitors and amazing feedback from the public. And the venues and acts were all essential in making the weekend so special. And now it’s all systems go for SummerFest.” With over 30 artists in its lineup,
SummerFest wouldn’t be complete without their trademark event. “SpringFest’s silent discos were our busiest yet,” enthuses Marco, who regularly appears himself on the DJ lineup. “The Table was a particularly packed event, where we had an amazing crowd partying into the night under the stars. And we’re all set to repeat the experience at the end of the month.” On a mission to get Woodbridge firmly on the festival map, Ian continues: “We have got things off to a great start with our SummerFest Warm Up weekend. “I’m Wilf and I’m pictured here (on the left) with my twin brother Bert and baby bro, Arthur, who’s just turned one. We’re a striking trio – Bert and I are Scottish deerhounds and mum and dad, Julie and Tony, often refer to us as the ‘Kray Twins’ though I couldn’t tell you why. Baby Arthur (pictured in the middle) is an Irish wolfhound, so it’s hard to miss us as we walk around Woodbridge – we particularly love the riverbank and Kingston Playing Field. Arthur, who has just qualified for Crufts 2018, is a real tennis fan and when we walk past the tennis courts some kind person usually throws him a ball which he carries off with glee – it’s hard to get it back off him. They’re so considerate those tennis players! We like to think we’re canine celebrities, as almost everywhere we go someone says ‘hello’ or takes our photo. Once we had a whole coach of Japanese tourists snapping away at us, so I like to think we’ve gone global. We never say no to a bit of publicity. One of our favourite spots is the Cake Shop in the Thoroughfare, as we’re partial to a gingerbread man, minus the buttons of course.” Local home owners… throw open their doors

MAN ABOUT TOWN Having met Pudgey Wells on his 95th birthday, we visited him at home for a cuppa to find out more about his extraordinary life
L
iving in the Seckford Almshouses, Pudgey Wells shows no signs of his age or the hard times he’s endured. “I look more like a man in his seventies,” he smiles proudly. Born in Ufford in 1922 and christened Percy, Pudgey’s first job was as night soil man for the council, emptying outside toilets. “I was always catching people on the seat,” he laughs, “and one old lady always used to leave me out a bar of chocolate, which I’d take round to the chaps at the council. You couldn’t imagine doing a job like that these days.” Having signed up and joined the 4th Suffolk’s 18th Division as a cook in September 1939, aged 17, Pudgey (a childhood nickname) soon found himself en route to Singapore. “We were supposed to go to Italy, but Pearl Harbour happened, and so plans changed.” On a journey that took him via Nova Scotia, Cape Town and Bombay, Pudgey arrived in Singapore in 1940. “Our job was to take food up to the front line, but six of us were captured about a fortnight after arriving. The fittest prisoners were selected to build the train line and it was terrible. We lived 20-up in bamboo huts and only had tiny portions of rice, dried fish and dried cucumber to eat. The Japanese soldiers had the same rations as us too. Some became good friends – you couldn’t blame them, they were just doing what they were told to do, like us. “I had tropical ulcers and they
wanted to cut my ankle off but I wouldn’t let them,” Pudgey continues. The main killer was cholera and Pudgey vividly remembers waking up next to men who had died in the night. “The bodies had to be burnt to stop the disease spreading. You just had to think about staying alive.” In 1942 he transferred to Japan and spent the rest of the war working in tin mines and steel works. In Tokyo, when the war ended on 15th August 1945, he weighed just five stone.

Starting his own taxi firm, Station Taxis, in 1957, the next 20 years saw Pudgey busier than ever, running the business but also providing chauffeuring services for weddings. “I can’t remember how many weddings I did, but I always loved making a bride’s day special. “Even when I was out in the taxi, I always used to wear a collar and tie, and look the part. It was all about opening doors and taking a customer’s luggage for them in those days.” Pudgey and Gladys were two of

On returning home, aged 23, Pudgey’s ‘can do’ attitude and passion for helping people saw him join the Woodbridge fire service on a part time basis. “The funny thing is I always said after joining the army I’d never join anything again.” He also married Gladys in 1947, who he’d known since she was 12. “We got married in St Mary’s Church just down the road and there was snow on the ground,” he says. “Her dad always said she’d been waiting for me to come home.”
the first to move into the Seckford Almshouses following their refurbishment in 2005. “I just love living here. I’ve three rooms and some great friends and neighbours. My friend Gaye comes in every day, and Christine kindly brings me my paper every morning. I’m a very popular boy.” Sadly, Gladys died 20 years ago, but these days Pudgey enjoys the companionship of Heather Deere, who lives in Bury Hill. “Heather’s a wonderful lady,” he adds. Still driving and only recently given up his bowling career, Pudgey is showing no signs of slowing down. “I used to play bowls for the county up until quite recently, but these days I love going down to the club and watching a good game.” And what about the future? “I just want to stay living in this house, have my friends around me and help people when I can.” Long live Pudgey. ncredibly, it takes an average of 10 years from the onset of hearing loss to addressing the condition,” says founder, manging director and head audiologist of The Hearing Care Centre, Karen Finch. “Our aim is to make it easy to get friendly, professional advice and then provide ongoing support to patients needing hearing aids. One of the best bits about my job is how many patients tell me that coming to see us has changed their life.” Operating 25 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk, The Hearing Care Centre is the region’s leading privately owned and independent audiology practice. “One in six people over 50 in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, and it increases to 90 per cent in those aged over 81. We’re also seeing an increase in customers in their 30s and 40s whose hearing has been diminished through noisy work environments or listening to very loud music,” continues Karen. With appointments available to local patients every Wednesday at Woodbridge’s Framfield House Surgery, it’s simply a case of calling the customer service team and booking an appointment with Karen. “The fact patients can come along to their local

surgery, which may be very familiar to them, and park easily, makes a huge difference to the whole experience.” Digital technology introduced about 15 years ago revolutionised the hearing aid market and is also responsible for destigmatising the wearing of hearing devices. “Long gone are those pale brown bulky devices that sat above your ear,” smiles Karen. “These days it’s often more noticeable when people aren’t wearing a hearing aid and are having to constantly ask people to repeat themselves. “Geared up for 21st century living, today’s hearing aids can be connected via an app on your phone and enable wearers to stream music, stream their phone calls and even track down their hearing aid if it’s been mislaid. Available in an infinite range of colours, including those to match skin types and hair colours, and in hundreds of designs, there’s a style or design to suit everyone.” Proud of its independence, The Hearing Care Centre offers over 400 hearing aids, and stocks all major manufacturers, so customers are always confident they’re being fitted with the best device to meet their specific needs. It’s also very much a family business. Founded by Karen in 1998, the 23-strong

team includes audiologist husband Melvyn, sons Matthew and Nathan who are responsible for marketing, and auntie Denise and niece Natasha, both of whom work in customer care. “We put a lot of our effort into this aspect of the business,” says Karen. “Whether it’s a new customer who has finally found the courage to call to make their first appointment, or an existing customer with some questions, we’re here to help. It’s this ongoing support that sets us apart.” With a plethora of customer care awards to its name, The Hearing Care Centre is all about doing the best for its patients. We take our hats off to the carers in Woodbridge! Staff at Woodbridge Lodge have issued a declaration to carers looking after loved ones at home - if you care we care! The residential care home in Burkitt Road, Woodbridge, has started to run a care café from 10.30am to noon on the last Thursday of every month. The event is to provide carers with an opportunity to meet up with people in the same position and share their problems, swap ideas or perhaps simply enjoy a chat over coffee and cakes. They can treat the occasion as a welcome break from caring or, equally, come along with the person for whom they are caring. Woodbridge manager Paula Baker said she was proud to have pioneered an initiative which is now being rolled out by Kingsley Healthcare to its homes across the country. She said: “This is our way of saying, ‘if you care, we care’. “You might work as a carer, care for a family member or just help out your neighbour by doing their shopping for them once a week.
