About the Author Dr. Mike Chapman has been the senior pastor of City Church of Chattanooga, Tennessee, since September 12, 1976. City Church is known as a thriving, innovative, and cutting-edge church. Pastor Chapman came to City Church after serving as pastor in Fremont, California; and Honolulu, Hawaii. A native South Carolinian, Dr. Chapman received his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Education from Lee University (Cleveland, Tennessee), his Master of Theology from Luther Rice Seminary (Lithonia, Georgia), and his Doctor of Ministry from North American Biblical Seminary (Buffalo, New York).

Mike has served on the Turning Point Board of Directors for 12 years and currently serves as the vice chairman. He is known as a gifted communicator and visionary. Pastor Chapman is on the Turning Point promotional video and in the Living Free video training series.

About the Small Group Editor Dr. Jimmy Ray Lee is founder and president of Turning Point Ministries, Inc. He has authored Understanding the Times and numerous small group studies published by Turning Point. Under the direction and guidance of Dr. Lee, Turning Point produced Living Free—a high-impact, video-based training.

This training helps churches develop Christ-centered small groups that deal with the contemporary problems people face today.

Dr. Lee is the founder and honorary chairman of Project 714 (now known as National Center for Youth Issues), a chemical prevention/intervention program for schools. He also founded Ark Ministries, an inner-city ministry that reached 600 to 700 young people weekly. He started the Chattanooga Teen Challenge and served as president for three years. Jimmy was executive director of the Nashville Teen Challenge during its formative years.

Jimmy has served as pastor, area youth director, and hospital chaplain. He has earned a master of divinity and doctor of ministry from Luther Rice Seminary. In 1983, he was awarded the “Service to Mankind Award” presented by the Highland Sertoma Club in Hixson, Tennessee.

Preface A few years ago, I came across a humorous list of church bulletin bloopers. Maybe you have seen or heard them. Here’s just a sample…

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

Weight Watchers will meet at 7 p.m. Please use the large double door at the side entrance.

At the evening service tonight, the topic will be “What is Hell?” Come early and listen to the choir practice.

Ushers will eat latecomers.

Don’t let worry kill you—let the church help.

We all get a good chuckle out of these. Unfortunately, this is the impression that much of our culture has of church and church people—well-intentioned but a shade south of normal. This perception forms a subtle barrier that keeps many people from buying into our faith and choosing to follow Christ.

As people consider the claims of Christ, they are not only thinking about the authenticity of the message but are also contemplating the authenticity of Jesus’ followers. Mentally, they are wondering, “What would it really be like to be a follower of Jesus? What kind of person would I become? What kind of people am I going to be hanging out with? Are these Christians really real people or just phonies?”

In the past, the primary apologetic for the Christian faith was a logical defense. We argued the rational evidences for God’s existence, the credibility of the Bible, and the historical basis for the resurrection of Christ. While these are still important, people today are looking for something more. The more relevant apologetic in our post-Christian, post-modern culture is REAL CHRISTIANS. Authentic people who are living in authentic Christian community are powerful witnesses.

There was a TV commercial that offered a genuine faux diamond ring for only $19.95! A person who is not fluent in French may not know that the word faux means fake. They are selling a genuine fake! Of course at $19.95, what else did you expect?

Think about it…a genuine fake! May this not be our witness as followers of Christ. Let’s go after the real thing. What does it mean to be an authentic Christian?

This will be the subject of this bible study. You will be looking at some of the key identifying characteristics of real Christianity—the only kind that can bring honor to Christ and a witness to his gospel. I have prepared a brief overview of the sessions on the accompanying CD to assist you in your preparation. May this journey be a joy for you and those in your group.

Getting Started Group Size We suggest that each Authentic Living group have two group leaders (facilitators) and a maximum of 12 participants. Having more than 12 may prevent some from being a part of much-needed discussion.

Preparation Time The facilitator’s material is written in an almost word-for-word dialogue. However, it is hoped that as you come to know and understand the concepts presented, you will be able to “personalize” each session to better fit your own style. Highlight the points you want to emphasize and make notes for yourself.

Your group is unique—so adapt questions to their needs and situations. Be sensitive to each person who is in your group.

Keep in mind that the answers provided for the discussion questions are there only as a tool to assist you and may not be the only “right” answers to the questions being asked.

Become thoroughly familiar with the four elements of each session: • Introduction • Self-Awareness • Spiritual Awareness • Application You will find more detail about these on the following page.

The facilitators should meet prior to each session to pray and make final plans. They should also meet briefly after each session to discuss what happened during the meeting and go over any follow-up that may be needed.

Authentic Living Group Member Handout At the beginning of each session, the Authentic Living Group Member Handout should be distributed to each group member. Facilitators should be thoroughly familiar with the material before the first meeting.

You may want to provide a handout at each session for the next lesson so each participant can be prepared for the next session. Through the readings and other exercises in the group member handout, group members can come to each session better prepared for meaningful discussion.

Correlation Between Facilitator’s Guide and Group Member Handout Facilitator’s Guide — This guide is designed to lead the group through the four-phase small group format. The facilitator’s responsibility is to start the discussion, give it direction, and thereafter simply keep the discussion personal and on track.

The text is presented in the left column, and the right column contains tips and pointers for leading the group along with answers to the questions.

The facilitator will prayerfully present select questions because there are usually more questions than time permits.

Although the text is presented in the Group Member’s Handout, in some cases it may not be word for word as in the Facilitator’s Guide. For example, the Introductions are dif-

ferent in the two guides. The Facilitator’s Guide is directed toward the opening prayer and the sharing question; whereas, the Group Member’s Handout focuses on being welcomed to the group.

Group Member’s Handout — This guide is designed to be done as homework, preparing the participant for meaningful ministry during the small group session.

Although the general text is the same as Self-Awareness, Spiritual Awareness, and Application in the Facilitator’s Guide, concentration should be on the group process during the actual group experience.

It is good for the participant to have the group member handout for each group session; however, the participant should be more attentive to the group process rather than trying to find text in the Group Member’s Handout. Each group member should bring a Bible for meaningful study and application of God’s Word for daily living.

In a Nutshell — The Facilitator’s Guide is designed to lead the group process through Authentic Living. The Group Member’s Handout will prepare the participant for the group meeting.

The Group Member’s Handout is provided in the back section of the Facilitator’s Guide. You have permission to reproduce the handout for your local church and/or outreach.

Suggested Group Format The group format for each session consists of four elements: Introduction, SelfAwareness, Spiritual Awareness, and Application.

There is a reason for each phase. The facilitators should always plan each session with this format in mind.

Part I Introduction (8 minutes) Begin with prayer. The facilitator may pray or may ask one of the group members to lead in prayer. After the prayer, a sharing question helps put the group at ease and makes the members more comfortable in being a part of the discussion. The lead facilitator should respond to the sharing question first, followed by the co-facilitator.

This helps the group members to feel safer in participating in the exercise. No one should take more than one minute in response to the sharing question. Also, no other questions should be asked at this time so the process will not be lengthened.

This is not the time for detailed conversation, so ask the members of the group to keep their comments brief. If a person is obviously in pain during the exercise, the facilitator should interrupt the sharing and pray for the person in pain. After prayer, the exercise may resume.

Part II Self-Awareness (12 minutes) After the sharing question, the facilitator will lead the group into the Self-Awareness phase. Self-Awareness is a time to discuss the practical issues involved in Authentic Living. It is important to stay on the subject matter. This is a time to focus on needs and healing, not to have a “martyr” or “pity party.”

It is suggested in SelfAwareness that the facilitators ask the group members to share as they wish rather than going around the circle as in the Introduction phase. This is because people are at various comfort levels, and they should not feel pressured to self-disclose if they are uncomfortable. As the group continues to meet, members will feel more and more comfortable in being a part of the discussion.

Remember, prayer is always in order. If a group member is hurting during this phase, stop and pray. One of the facilitators may lead in prayer or ask another group member to pray. This says to the group members that each one is important and that you care about each individual.

When each Scripture is called by the facilitator, the group member should read the verse(s). After the verses are read, give time for discussion.

Part IV Application (12 minutes) This part is actually a continuation of Part III. Ask for volunteers to share their reflections on the question. The facilitators should emphasize the importance of the group members’ applying biblical principles to their lives. Help begins with right thinking. The Bible says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

Obedience to the Word should follow with right behavior. Right feelings will follow right thinking and right behavior.

Sharing Question Welcome to this group—Authentic Living in an Artificial World. I would like to begin this first session by having each of us in the group introduce himself/herself. I will start by telling you my name is _______________.

elf-Awareness

The purpose of this exercise is to help group members move toward being more comfortable in sharing with the group. Ask each one to introduce himself/herself, beginning with yourself and your co-facilitator.

Many people have the perception that church people are well-intentioned but just a shade south of normal—that Christians are not real people. This occasionally presents roadblocks to some who would like to follow Christ. There are three milestones an adult must pass through before they take the “Christian plunge.” These are as follows: 1. We experience a deep nagging sense that all is not as it should be in our lives.

2. We begin to question the claims of Christianity. Are they really true?

3. We consider what it really means to become a Christian. What would it be like to be a true follower of Jesus? What kind of person would we become?

What kind of people would we be hanging out with?

Have you experienced these milestones in your life or noticed them in another person? Describe.

In this session we will address the third issue—what does it really mean to become a Christian?

Unfortunately, Christians are often seen through caricatures. A caricature is an image rooted in reality but distorted in a way that drastically overemphasizes some features of that reality. Here are some examples: “No Fun Nellie,” “Ignorant Irene,” “Spectacular Sam,” “Willie the Wimp.”

Spiritual Awareness Lead–In All of these caricatures have to do with the practice of religion. Christianity is not fundamentally about practicing a religion; it is about a relationship with God. In Mark 12:29-30, Jesus describes the most important commandment. What is it?

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (v. 30).

Christianity is essentially about loving God and having a relationship with the God of the universe.

Real Christianity is about loving God, which is a different agenda than what the rest of the world lives by. Now we will look at three aspects of this relationship with God. Dependence on God What does Proverbs 3:5 say about trust and dependence?

In 2 Corinthians 1:8-10, the Apostle Paul experienced “great pressure, far beyond [his] ability to endure.” Facing death, what did he learn?

Delight in God What does Psalm 37:4 say concerning those who take delight in the Lord?

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

“But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God (v.9).”

“He will give you the desires of your heart.”

When our hearts are right with God, we will desire only what God has for our lives.

Psalm 43:4 talks about going “to the altar of God.” What does the Psalmist call God in this verse?

In his book Authentic Christianity, Ray Stedman lists five characteristics of a real relationship with God.

God is not interested in turning you into some outrageous, unreal, artificial person. He wants to give you a better life (John 10:10). He does not want to be distant and dreaded by you. He wants to be your loving Father.

What steps can you take to be or become more real as a Christian?

These would be steps that concentrate on deepening a relationship with God.

Closing Prayer Our prayer is that “what we are. . . when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present” (2 Corinthians 10:11).

Sometimes, the greatest obstacle to the message of Christianity is Christians themselves. We are often perceived as pessimistic, suspicious, critical, judgmental, cranky, stingy people. People are not just standing in line for more of this.

How opposite this is from how Jesus described the Christian life. He called it “life to the full”—a better life (John 10:10).

Such a life is characterized by joy, and when the world sees the genuine happiness in the lives of Christ’s followers, they will take notice. They will see what real Christianity is all about.

Christianity is joyful. Joy is good for your health. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” During difficult times, we might not always have laughter, but God provides joy in spite of our circumstances.

Describe a time in your life when you had amazing joy in spite of difficult circumstances.

Spiritual Awareness Lead–In In 1 Thessalonians 5:16 and Philippians 4:4, the Bible puts joy in the non-optional category.

What do these passages say?

“Be joyful always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16). I need to find a way to be joyful in all circumstances.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). Paul is clearly emphasizing the importance of joy by repeating himself.

There are practical steps to joy in the Bible. There are ways to laugh more.

Stop taking yourself so seriously.

Nehemiah 8:9-10 shows that sacred days do not have to be limited to mourning and weeping. There should be joy.

According to these verses, what does the “joy of the LORD” bring to one’s life?

Start rejoicing today.

Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the LORD has made.” So what should we do?

“ ‘This day is sacred to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep. For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law. Nehemiah said, ‘Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks. . .This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength’ ” (Emphasis added).

“Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Hang around happy people.

Proverbs 17:22, the verse we discussed earlier, says “a cheerful heart is good medicine.”

How does being around happy people affect you?

Smiling faces make us feel happy.

Laughter is contagious.

Simplify your life in order to enjoy God’s goodness.

In Luke 10:41-42, Jesus helps Martha focus on Him and away from distractions.

What did He say to Martha?

“ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.’ ” Our focus should be on Jesus.

Get a biblical perspective on life.

The Apostle Paul describes this perspective in 2 Corinthians 4:18.

What is it?

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Let us not forget, this is a life of faith in Christ.

What impact does keeping this perspective have on us?

In his book Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer (Harcourt, Inc., 1992, p. 93), C. S. Lewis said , “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” God is a happy God. Little children are more like God than we are.

Laughter is one of the marks of God’s image in us. To miss out on joy is to miss out on the reason for our existence. God wants His joy to be in us (John 15:11).

Genesis 18:11-12 describes Sarah’s laughter when she learned that she would have a child though she was well-advanced in years.

Describe the funniest or most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you and that causes you to laugh at its remembrance.

There is only one catch to all of this. It is impossible to experience real joy unless you have invited the King of Joy to come into your life.

Despite what you may have heard, ignorance is not bliss.

The Old Testament prophet said, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). This means that ignorance is not bliss. Great happiness does not come from being ignorant. Ignorance can be very dangerous.

Spiritual Awareness Lead–In It is important to learn the Bible. The Bible brings purity to our lives. In Psalm 119:11, David said that he hid the Word of God in his heart.

Why did he do this?

Learning the Word of God provides us with power, peace, principles to live by, and purpose in life.

The Bible gives us power for spiritual battles. Ephesians 6:17 describes the role of the Word of God in the believer’s armor.

What role does it serve?

As the “sword of the Spirit.”

What kind of sword does Hebrews 4:12 link with the Word of God?

A sharp, “double-edged sword.”

What is the power this sword wields?

It has the power to judge “the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

The Bible shows us how to live in peace. Philippians 4:8-9 describes godly characteristics with a promise.

What are the characteristics that we are to think about?

“Whatever is true; whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

When we put these into practice, what is the promise?

“The God of peace will be with you.”

The Bible gives us principles by which to live. Hebrews 5:14 describes the benefit to those who are mature in the Lord.

What is the result?

The Bible prepares us to achieve our purpose in life.

We will be able to distinguish good from evil.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (v. 16).

According to verse 17, how does this prepare us for the purpose God has for us?

The Bible leads us to the Person of the book. “These are the Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39). We can become a person of the book by receiving instructions from teachers in the church. Ephesians 4:1-12 describes offices in the church that are designed to help people.

Why does God give these ministers to us?

“To prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” (Ephesians 4:12).

We should take advantage of Christian books and materials.

In 2 Timothy 4:13, what did Paul request from Timothy?

“When you come, bring . . . my scrolls, especially the parchments.”

We should read the Bible personally. Psalm 119:16 says, “I will not neglect your word.”

Here is a recipe for meaningful Bible reading: 1. Read regularly—Do you have a plan?

Several years ago Bill Gaither wrote a song entitled Learning to Lean. The subject of the song was learning to lean on Jesus.

Leaning is not something that comes easily to many of us.

Our stubborn independence causes us to view leaning as a sign of weakness; however, leaning is a good biblical word and is another one of the marks of a real Christian.

Can you describe a time in your life when you chose your independence versus leaning on Jesus? What was the result?

Life brings us face-to-face with the issue of trust. The Hebrew word for trust means “to lean your whole weight on something in order to rest on it.”

Paul writes, “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me . . . But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12-14).

Real Christians embrace God’s call and lean into it.

1 Peter 2:9 describes real Christians leaning into God’s destiny.

In light of this verse, what kind of people are we?

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.”

What has God destined for us?

To “declare the praises of Him.”

Real Christians lean on each other. Paul writes, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. . . .Each one should test his own actions . . . for each one should carry his own load” (Galatians 6:2-5).

Independence is not always admirable; however, interdependence is a biblical principle which carries the idea of mutual dependency. Real Christians understand the value of community.

There is a difference between leaning on or using others and/or being used by others. What is it?

From Psalm 23:2, discuss how these images convey a sense of safety and serenity to those who are in the Shepherd’s care.

“He makes me lie down in green pastures” (Psalm 23:2). He insists that I rest in Him.

Faith becomes an integral force within my soul.

According to Romans 10:17, how does faith come to us?

“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.”

Slowing “ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things’ ” (Luke 10:41).

We should cultivate patience by deliberately placing ourselves in situations where we simply have to wait.

Silence “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

Silence is an unwelcome stranger for many of us but a discipline that we must learn.

Solitude “Because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place” (Mark 6:31-32).

Sabbath “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy” (Exodus 20:8).

The Sabbath is not a time of running away but a time to get a proper perspective.

This is our final session on Authentic Living in an Artificial World. We have said that real Christians laugh, learn, lean, and linger. This session will focus on love. Jesus said that love is the highest calling we can pursue (Matthew 22:3739). He also said that the world would know we are Christians by our love (John 13:35).

There are false presumptions about love. Loving others is not natural. Within the human spirit, there is an evil root of corruption that contaminates our motives and actions. The Bible calls this corruption the flesh—sinful nature (Romans 7:18).

The worldly view is that love is primarily an emotion. The Bible says love is more than just an emotion. It is also a command, and therefore, it often requires an act of the will.

Describe a situation in your life where you had to make it an act of your will to love a person (it is not necessary to name the individual).

How has that relationship progressed?

We are to love boldly.

1 John 3:16 and 18 show how we can know what love is.

How can you tell the difference between love that is just words and genuine love?

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.

And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. . . . Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”

Christian love flies in the face of our culture. Bold love takes courage. It makes itself vulnerable.

Bold love is optimistic. It hopes for and longs for the day of reconciliation.

Bold love is commitment without conditions. It has a love in spite of attitude.

Decide to settle for nothing else.

elf-Awareness Many people have the perception that church people are well-intentioned but just a shade south of normal—that Christians are not real people. This occasionally presents roadblocks to some who would like to follow Christ. There are three milestones an adult must pass through before they take the “Christian plunge.” These are as follows: 1. We experience a deep nagging sense that all is not as it should be in our lives.

2. We begin to question the claims of Christianity. Is it really true?

3. We consider what it really means to become a Christian. What would it be like to be a true follower of Jesus? What kind of person would we become?

What kind of people would we be hanging out with?

Have you experienced these milestones in your life or noticed them in another person? Describe.

In this session we will address the third issue—what does it really mean to become a Christian?

Unfortunately, Christians are often seen through caricatures.

A caricature is an image rooted in reality but distorted in a way that drastically overemphasizes some features of that reality. Here are some examples: “No Fun Nellie,” “Ignorant Irene,” “Spectacular Sam,” “Willie the Wimp.”

All of these caricatures have to do with the practice of religion. Christianity is not fundamentally about practicing a religion. It is about a relationship with God. In Mark 12:29-30, Jesus describes the most important commandment. What is it?

Christianity is essentially about loving God and having a relationship with the God of the universe.

piritual-Awareness Real Christianity is about loving God, which is a different agenda than what the rest of the world lives by. Now we will look at three aspects of this relationship with God. Dependence on God What does Proverbs 3:5 say about trust and dependence?

In 2 Corinthians 1:8-10, the Apostle Paul experienced “great pressure, far beyond [his] ability to endure.” Facing death, what did he learn?

Delight in God What does Psalm 37:4 say concerning those who take delight in the Lord?

When our hearts are right with God, we will desire only what God has for our life.

Psalm 43:4 talks about going “to the altar of God.” What does the Psalmist call God in this verse?

Devotion to God Devotion to God is defined in 2 Corinthians 5:15. In your own words what does this verse say?

elf-Awareness Sometimes, the greatest obstacle to the message of Christianity is Christians themselves. We are often perceived as pessimistic, suspicious, critical, judgmental, cranky, stingy people. People are not just standing in line for more of this.

How opposite this is from how Jesus described the Christian life. He called it “life to the full”—a better life (John 10:10).

Such a life is characterized by joy, and when the world sees the genuine happiness in the lives of Christ’s followers, they will take notice. They will see what real Christianity is all about.

Christianity is joyful. Joy is good for your health. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” During difficult times, we might not always have laughter, but God provides joy in spite of our circumstances.

Describe a time in your life when you had amazing joy in spite of difficult circumstances.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16 and Philippians 4:4, the Bible puts joy in the non-optional category.

What do these passages say?

Stop taking yourself so seriously.

Nehemiah 8:9-10 shows that sacred days do not have to be limited to mourning and weeping. There should be joy.

Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the LORD has made.” So what should we do?

Hang around happy people.

Proverbs 17:22, the verse we discussed earlier, says “a cheerful heart is good medicine.” How does being around happy people affect you?

Simplify your life in order to enjoy God’s goodness.

In Luke 10:41-42, Jesus helps Martha focus on Him and away from distractions? What did He say to Martha?

Get a biblical perspective on life.

The Apostle Paul describes this perspective in 2 Corinthians 4:18. What is it?

What impact does keeping this perspective have on us?

In his book Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer (Harcourt, Inc., 1992, p. 93), C. S. Lewis said, “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” God is a happy God. Little children are more like God than we are.

Laughter is one of the marks of God’s image in us. To miss out on joy is to miss out on the reason for our existence. God wants His joy to be in us (John 15:11).

Genesis 18:11-12 describes Sarah’s laughter when she learned that she would have a child though she was well-advanced in years.

Describe the funniest or most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you, and it still causes you to laugh at its remembrance.

There is only one catch to all of this. It is impossible to experience real joy unless you have invited the King of Joy to come into your life. How would you describe the degree of joy in your life at this time?

elf-Awareness Despite what you may have heard, ignorance is not bliss.

The Old Testament prophet said “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). This means that ignorance is not bliss. Great happiness does not come from being ignorant. Ignorance can be very dangerous.

What opportunities have you used to increase your knowledge of God’s Word?

Has the Lord prompted you to increase your knowledge of the Scripture? What steps have you taken?

It is important to learn the Bible. The Bible brings purity to our lives. In Psalm 119:11, David said that he hid the word of God in his heart.

Why did he do this?

piritual-Awareness Learning the Word of God provides us with power, peace, principles to live by, and purpose in life.

The Bible gives us power for spiritual battles. Ephesians 6:17 describes the role of the Word of God in the believer’s armor.

What role does it serve?

What kind of sword does Hebrews 4:12 link with the Word of God? What is the power this sword wields?

The Bible shows us how to live in peace. Philippians 4:8-9 describes godly characteristics with a promise.

What are the characteristics that we are to think about?

When we put these into practice what is the promise?

The Bible gives us principles by which to live. Hebrews 5:14 describes the benefit to those who are mature in the Lord.

The Bible prepares us to achieve our purpose in life.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (v. 16).

According to verse 17, how does this prepare us for the purpose God has for us?

The Bible leads us to the Person of the book. “These are the Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39). We can become a person of the book by receiving instructions from teachers in the church. Ephesians 4:11-12, describes offices in the church that are designed to help people.

Why does God give these ministers to us?

We should take advantage of Christian books and materials.

In 2 Timothy 4:13, what did Paul request from Timothy?

We should read the Bible personally. Psalm 119:16 says, “I will not neglect your word.”

Here is a recipe for meaningful Bible reading: 1. Read regularly—Do you have a plan?

2. Read prayerfully—Are you asking God to Meet you in His Word?

3. Read repentantly. Read for transformation.

4. Read reflectively—The goal is not to get through the Scriptures. It is to get the Scriptures in us.

elf-Awareness Several years ago Bill Gaither wrote a song entitled Learning to Lean. The subject of the song was learning to lean on Jesus.

Leaning is not something that comes easily to many of us.

Our stubborn independence causes us to view leaning as a sign of weakness; however, leaning is a good biblical word and is another one of the marks of a real Christian.

Can you describe a time in your life when you chose your independence versus leaning on Jesus? What was the result?

elf-Awareness This is our final session on Authentic Living in an Artificial World. We have said that real Christians laugh, learn, lean, and linger. This session will focus on love. Jesus said that love is the highest calling we can pursue (Matthew 22:3739). He also said that the world would know we are Christians by our love (John 13:35).

There are false presumptions about love. Loving others is not natural. Within the human spirit, there is an evil root of corruption that contaminates our motives and actions. The Bible calls this corruption the flesh—sinful nature (Romans 7:18).

The worldly view is that love is primarily an emotion. The Bible says love is more than just an emotion. It is also a command, and therefore, it often requires an act of the will.

Describe a situation in your life where you had to make it an act of your will to love a person (it is not necessary to name the individual).

How does verse 13 describe love in comparison to faith and hope?

How can you tell the difference between love that is just words and genuine love?

Christian love flies in the face of our culture. Bold love takes courage. It makes itself vulnerable.

Bold love is optimistic. It hopes for and longs for the day of reconciliation.

Bold love is commitment without conditions. It has a love in spite of attitude.

Because bold love is a choice, it requires commitment to develop. Those who pursue bold love will find they need to: •

Decide to settle for nothing else.

“But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31).

Understand that bold love is a “God thing.”

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love” (Galatians 5:22).

Be prepared for bold love to be tested.

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them” (Luke 6:32).

•

Persevere after failure.

David failed many times but never gave up.

“I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart” (Acts 13:22).

Is there any good reason why you cannot receive Jesus Christ right now?

How to receive Christ: 1. Admit your need (that you are a sinner).

2. Be willing to turn from your sins (repent).

3. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave.

4. Through prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit (receive Him as Savior and Lord).

I am willing to turn from my sins.
