Letter from the editor Instagram restricted the Livewire account right out of the gate. It is restricted from advertising or boosting posts. No biggie. I can still post things, but I can't invite collaborators to share audiences. After two unsuccessful appeals to a bot of some kind I assume, I'm still restricted due to "automated account activity." It says Meta restrict accounts that are harmful to the community. WTF? All I have ever posted, so far, are screenshots of the covers. It dawned on me that every cover says "Put down your phone." Could that be why Meta thinks the Livewire Instagram account is threatening? I can't say I blame them!

By popular demand, we are starting a new feature called New Releases. This is a service for local artists. Short announcements of imminent record releases will be listed, with a thumbnail of the cover art. This will probably only be in one of the two monthly issues. If you or your band has a new LP or EP or single release, go to the website and tell us a little about it. Monique Clouse Editor-in-Chief

COVER STORY

BOHANNONS SIBLING REVELRY

By: Douglas Bales

Brothers, Marty and Matt Bohannon, both began learning to play guitar at fairly young ages. Luckily, for us music-lovers, the two decided to form a band. The Bohannons played their first show as a four-piece in 2006. Since then, they have become one of Chattanooga’s most popular and most prolific groups. Although the rhythm section of Bohannons has changed multiple times over the years, the band continues to put out great albums and perform fantastic shows that always leave their fans wanting more. When asking Marty about musical influences, he says, “It all goes into this big filter in your mind and it lands where it lands.” They both agree that their biggest inspiration is watching other bands perform live. Matt notes, “It’s just inspiring to be out there and meet other bands and artists that you respect. It lets you know that you can do it.” Both Marty and Matt share guitar, vocal and songwriting duties with the Bohannons. They are brothers, but at the same time, separate and creative individuals. They both say that they were inspired by classic rock, southern rock, singer-songwriters and classic country. All of this is apparent in their sound. The Bohannons play songs that sound heavy and mean and then break into a country-style pickin’ solo. They can also pull off songs that start out as folksy and melodic but then morph into some sort of psychedelic southern rock. They slither easily between emotional ballads and roof-raising rockers at the drop of a hat. 4 » Livewire | GET OUT THERE AND HAVE FUN

Since 2007, Bohannons have released 8 records and several singles as a band and are currently working on a new album that will be out in the very near future. Most of their recordings are on the label Cornelius Chapel Records. Alongside the band’s albums, Matt Bohannon has released two full-length, solo LPs, ‘Please Hold For No One’ & ‘Go Back to Your Roots’. Marty Bohannon has released one solo LP, ‘A Scar is Born’ and has a second album in the can that will soon be available. Their solo works (and shows) use an amalgamation of some prime local players as their backing bands and have the same energy and honesty of their collaborative material. As far as their band goes; Bohannons have worked with some notable studio pros over the years. They recorded their second release, ‘Bright White Light’ at Grand Palace Studios (Murfreesboro, TN) with Alex Norfleet at the controls. Their third album, ‘Unaka Rising’ was recorded at Chase Park Transduction (Athens, GA) with David Barbe and Drew Vandenburg at the helm. Then they went a step further for their fourth release, ‘Days of Echo’. Marty had come across a story in Tape-Op Magazine that was an interview with recording and producing icon Steve Albini. In the article, Albini mentioned that his studio, Electrical Audio Recording, would record indie bands on a “sliding scale” rate. Marty made the call and got the Bohannons on the waiting list. In almost no time they received a call (Continued on page 6)

back and were on their way to Chicago to record with a legendary figure. Marty says, “The first thing Albini said to me was, ‘We’re gonna fix your songs…’ and he did.” Both Matt and Marty agree that the experience was a formative part of their careers. Working with a true master gave each of them a different take on recording methods, song structure and everything else that’s important for making good music into great music. In the last two decades the Bohannons have spent their fair share of time on the road. The farthest afield that the band has traveled was a nine-day tour to England in 2008. On this tour Bohannons were a support act for Black Diamond Heavies. After only two or three years in the game, they thought they had “made it”. After all, when you have a tour manager driving you around England in a Mercedes Sprinter and you’re playing nine shows in nine days, that’s the dream! Both brothers are family men that hold down jobs Photo by Brenda Bohannon amid their dedication to music. Whenever a new release comes out, they do short tours that include local shows streaming platforms and get in touch with them on the typical and promotional dates throughout the Southeast and Mid-west, social media sites. and anywhere else that is even vaguely reasonable. If you’re new to Chattanooga, or you’ve been living under a rock, The future for the Bohannons looks bright. An upcoming LP and haven’t checked out the Bohannons yet, you should. Trust as well as more solo records and shows on the way. Recently me. These brothers live for great music and make great music they have invested in their own recording studio, Kudzu Sound, and bring great music to our little city. which promises to be an extremely fruitful outlet for both In short, the Bohannons have become the backbone of the Chattanooga music scene. Between their own musical endeavors and their undying dedication to bringing other performers to town, they are indispensable. You can find their music on most

RECORD Review

LILLIAN: Empty Places

Other strong tracks include the opening track “Photophobia” with its lush synth contrasted by harmonized lyrics that at times feel almost shouted. “Changling” opens with a riff that compares favorably to The Cure’s “In Between Days.” The second track, “The Void” is an upbeat song with a driving chorus that will translate well to Lillian’s already strong live performances.

Over the past several years, Chattanooga’s Lillian has become the go-to band for vampires, vampire-adjacent and the vampire-curious. According to the band’s guitarist/keyboardist Graham Courter, the trio even got their start two decades ago performing live accompaniment for a local screening of the classic 1922 silent horror film “Nosferatu.”

In contrast, “No Shadow” opens with a simple drum track by Boutwell setting the stage for Knight’s bass followed by a guitar riff by Courter before Boutwell’s vocals finally join the song 45 seconds into the track. The tension built is then released in an almost acoustic bridge with just vocals and guitar that set up the final section of the song.

These guys know the dangers that lurk in the dark, and they’re here to celebrate it.

Lillian’s first studio album is another strong performance by one of Chattanooga’s legendary live bands and should be a must-buy for anyone who loves good music. If you like vampires, even better.

by Jim Tanner

Two years ago, Lillian released its debut self-titled EP, and now they’re back with their first full-length LP “Empty Places,” which will be released this fall. This new offering from Courter, drummer Josh Boutwell and bassist Travis Knight gives their fans more of what they have come to expect while adding some new touches that add to their bag of tricks. Producer/engineer Daniel Nelson captures the band’s signature sound without changing what makes Lillian such a strong group of artists. The new release retains the atmospheric pop sound that has made Lillian a strong live draw throughout Chattanooga, with elements of Depeche Mode, the Cure and Joy Division combined to create their own distinct sound. The new album continues that trend, with eight songs exploring love, longing, heartbreak and (occasionally) the undead. The first single from the new album “Visionary” was released on streaming services in March of this year. This song has many of the elements that make for a classic Lillian track There’s the throbbing bass and driving drums from Knight and Boutwell providing a foundation the Courter’s often ethereal guitar and synth and Knight’s distinctive vocals delivering dreamy and vaguely sinister lyrics such as, “Our time is running out; we lost it, baby. All we have is you and I. Forgive and forget, it’s not my way lately. What we had will never die.”

New Releases PLVNET has a new EP with release party August 22 at Songbirds. Three new tracks, featuring "Cocoon."

This is a new feature section to announce upcoming releases for local artists. Let us announce your new release by providing details at Livewire-chatt.com. They will print the issue before release.

Lillian adds new touches to their sound with songs such as the fourth track “All Rise,” which opens with the harmonies of the repeated line, “When you raise your hand, we will be there waiting in the fold” adding a new touch somewhat reminiscent of “’Til I Die” from the Beach Boys’ 1971 classic “Surf’s Up.” But that’s not the only surprise waiting for the listener in “All Rise.” The track moves from the intro more upbeat territory after the intro before a rhythmic break sets up a guitar solo that has almost a surf rock feel of the Ventures or perhaps Duane Eddy. The effect feels natural with the band’s overall sound while adding some new elements for listeners to discover. According to Courter, “IKYK” was a song that didn’t come together until the band got into the studio, and the result gives the song a loose feel without feeling sloppy or losing their precise way of producing music.

Spotlight by Marc Michael

Sacke and Sugar In the beginning Angela Clouse took up jewelry making as a simple matter of necessity. “I used to make my own jewelry in school. There was nothing quite weird enough for me at say, the mall, so I kind of did my own thing with found objects. I’ve always liked creating visual art, so it was a fun hobby that taught me the basics of jewelry making.” In 2020 Angela made the decision to put her creativity to work, first by designing t-shirts, and then by selling prints of her photography. A talented designer and photographer, she experienced some modest success with both ventures. Driven to try new things, she soon decided to put her jewelry making skills to use. Her business plan was simple: she would make jewelry that she herself would wear. “I find inspiration in goth and punk culture, fantasy, vintage, and costume designs from tv and films. Music is an incredibly important part of my life, so it inevitably influences a lot of what I do. I also really like horror films, which helps me keep things a little creepy.” Her aesthetic has proven popular enough to garner the attention of more than a few influencers and celebrity costumers. Her original work is worn by such notables as WWE star Alexa Bliss and the award-winning actress and Broadway star Cynthia Erivo who you may recognize as Elphaba from the films Wicked and Wicked: For Good.

Angela is quick to share credit for her success with her best friend, marketing professional Michael Miller. Together they have worked to develop a brand that is fun, distinct and cohesive on Instagram (@sacke_and_sugar) and Etsy (sackeandsugarco.etsy.com.) As important as an online presence may be, she finds her greatest success at fairs and markets. “I travel to markets primarily between Nashville and Atlanta throughout the year, and my list of upcoming events can be found on my Instagram. I sell a larger variety of pieces at my market booths than online. I’m always making jewelry as inspiration strikes in my home studio, so my inventory is constantly changing. There are always new pieces, many of them one of a kind. I also offer bone jewelry at markets, which are ethically sourced wearable art.” They say do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. There’s no doubt that Angela has put the work in, but the journey from a high school student just looking to express herself to a successful entrepreneur has been a passion project. “The thing that I love the most about doing this for the past few years are all the incredible people I’ve met. I have returning customers who I know by name and I love sharing what I’ve been working on with them. There is also a real sense of community among the artists and vendors I’ve met as well, and many of them are like family to me now. I feel really fortunate to have found something creative that I love to do and that seems to bring joy to others.” The Sacke and Sugar Co. Etsy shop has some stunning examples of her jewelry, all of which is surprisingly affordable. To see an even wider variety of artistic pieces you’ll want to follow her Instagram page where her schedule of events is updated regularly.

ART AROUND TOWN AVA Main and Landis Education Galleries: Annual Juried

Member Exhibition Every year, AVA hosts a Juried Show for our Member Artists. Each year a panel of jurors (each an established professional in the visual art field) score and evaluate submissions from AVA’s member artists. This show is a smaller scale group exhibit and helps us determine an artist for our annual Solo Artist Exhibition. The artist whose work receives the highest score from the Jurors is awarded “Best in Show” and will receive a solo exhibition of their work at AVA the following year as well as serving as a juror for the next Juried Show. Jurors are also each asked to select an artist to receive “Juror’s Choice” for automatic inclusion in the exhibition, regardless of score. Those artists are awarded a small group exhibition of their work in the Landis Education Gallery the following year, coinciding with the Best in Show solo exhibition. GOOD EATS by Lori Kyle

Where We Got Our Flavor On This Week: Mah Kin Sometimes the best meals happen because two friends have had a DAMN DAY and need food STAT. My friend Darin and I had been running around, recovering from a long day and picking up a few Halloween treasures, including my new favorite decorative raven, Rowena. Anyway, back to the topic…by the time we finished, we had officially become two HANGRY gals, and somebody needed to feed us quickly before we began to hiss. We had both heard great things about Mah Kin, and man, were we lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

lemongrass, kaffir lime, chili, garlic, shallots and fresh herbs (I declined the chili because I’m a wuss). The dish was slurpy, bright, hearty, comforting and beautifully fragrant. It filled our bellies, hearts and souls. We also enjoyed the savory Pad Kra Pao with chicken, vegetables, Thai sweet basil and steamed rice. Before leaving, I ordered hubs Pad Thai with chicken, and grabbed myself a creamy Thai Milk Tea for the road. Hangries officially cured.

Mah Kin is tucked into one of those little strip malls where all the really cool food places live. It immediately gave me Buford Highway memories and reminded me I am overdue for an Atlanta visit with friends, and a serious food crawl. Mah Kin was bright, colorful and welcoming, with a couple of families, which I love to see, a couple on a date, and us, the Hangry Gals. Our delightful server helped us choose a few things, and got our emergency under control.

Please…Take chances with food. Try new things. Share new cuisines. Taste, taste, TASTE. Be messy. Slurp those noodles. Savor your food, your experience and especially your friends. As always tip, tip, TIP your server. Be kind and thankful. If this dining experience were a vibe: “So Obsessed” by Siebold. Sometimes you just need a friend, an adventure, a raven named Rowena and something delicious. Mah Kin 5210 Brainerd Road, Suite 136 Chattanooga, TN 37411

We started with Basil Rolls, crisp, fresh and stuffed with lettuce, noodles, carrots and fragrant basil, with a jamming creamy peanut dipping sauce. The Kanom Jeen Namya was pure comfort with Thai rice noodles, chicken and coconut curry layered with 20 » Livewire | GET OUT THERE AND HAVE FUN

LIFE IN THE ‘NOOG by Chuck Crowder

Big Dumb Trucks There’s nothing worse than looking in the rearview mirror at the sight of a massive grill barreling down the road towards you at an obnoxious rate of speed. Why? Because you know exactly what it is—a big dumb truck. You know the breed. Usually a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, or other pick-up truck brand known for being “built tough.” They’re usually about six feet off the ground, have four doors and room for eight screaming kids, feature an enormous engine compartment, a “payload” massive enough to hold a full-size car, and a rarely used trailer hitch sticking out about three feet off the back bumper. And, if the driver has a certain penchant for extremism, the back wheels will number four. A “dually.”

The Silos on Marble Top Unique Short Term Airbnb Rental Convenient to: Lookout Mountain Cloudland Canyon Chickamauga Chattanooga Features: Silo Hot Tub

Bear in mind, a big dumb truck’s outrageous size has very little to do with its intended purpose. Despite countless TV commercials depicting big dumb trucks as a working man’s friend, the drivers of these behemoths aren’t in fact haulin’ hay, ropin’ cattle, pulling horse trailers, transporting large steel girders, or anything else that would test the true limits of American truck building ingenuity. No sir, in most cases around the ‘Noog—big dumb trucks simply make up for tiny insecurities. They also offer safe cover for piss-poor driving habits. A wise man once said that those who can’t do, teach. And using that logic, it’s safe to say that those who can’t drive, drive big dumb trucks. Constant, excessive speeding, tailgating, riding the yellow line, turning wide, sharp stops, running red lights, you name it, they’ll do it—simply because they can. If a big dumb truck gets into an accident—likely their fault because they can’t see where they’re going—the lion’s share of the damage will happen to the other car. That means YOU will have to deal with filing claims and wasting time at body shops—not the big dumb truck. Those drivers just take the insurance hit, then climb back into their rolling mobile home to ride again. While on the surface that may sound like a smart choice, it’s the only advantage of driving a big dumb truck. You see, the same people who rate the health of the world’s economy based solely on local gas prices are also the drivers who put about 100 miles a day on a vehicle designed to yield just 8 miles to the gallon. They moan about a fuel fund deficit that is easily explained by simple math, not rocket science. However, science was never a strong subject for big dumb truck drivers. I mean, if you need a ladder to get into the driver’s seat, how are you supposed to easily load a new sofa or bags of mulch into the bed? What’s the half-life of a 4x4 tire that never leaves the pavement? And, how’s that ride feel halfway to Atlanta? Pretty bumpy, huh? Fact is, big dumb trucks are a ridiculous display of “manly” prowess that is as ingeniously clever as the halfwit behind the wheel. So, if you’re the kind of person who proudly drives a normal-size pickup truck, I commend you. And I may need to borrow it this Saturday to move a sofa. Thanks! Livewire | VOLUME 1 • ISSUE 8 « 21
