Chock full of typos, that first issue was. As they say, done is better than perfect. But plenty of people have stepped up to offer their proofreading services. Getting the thing finished and to the printer on time was what really mattered more than anything, so I held my breath and went for it.
I have been so blown away and deeply touched by the enthusiastic reception Livewire received from the moment it dropped. John Shoemaker at JJ’s Bohemia and Dorothy at Scenic City Burlesque honored me with the most awesome boost posts on Instagram. Brooke Bragger, Kristiana at Broads Lounge, and Lilly Leann Wright too! Turns out I wasn’t alone in desperately wanting a local zine!
This is the best issue yet! Number two is breaking all the records. Seriously, I have been blessed with a photography contributor, Cole at Bone Wizard Media with some on-the-scene pics. Marc Michael wrote a great piece on the new Renaissance Faire organizers at Verre Noire. I’m just tickled pink to have Travis Knight’s art in two places- the Lo Main ad and the CFF ad.
In these early days, dear reader, you never know what will be in here. That makes it more fun, don’t you think?

Brightly colored clothing, clashing steel, roasting meat and more will greet visitors to Coolidge Park on Sunday, May 30. It’s a Renaissance Faire, Chattanooga’s first, and it’s brought to you courtesy of Becca Coleman, owner and operator of Verre Noire gothic botanical shop, and her circle of creative friends.
I spoke with representative Tess Henshaw who explained that the idea grew out of Verre Noire’s popular Night Market, a monthly themed event combining art, community, and a taste of Old World bazaar. “We did a Renaissance theme for one of our Night Market events,” said Henshaw. “We had a great time doing it and the response was phenomenal. So many people asked when we were going to do it again that Becca started thinking the community would enjoy an actual Ren Faire even more. We all got together and talked it over and it took off from there.”
The “we” Henshaw referred to is a group of eleven friends, creative folk whose dedication and enthusiasm for the passion project has resulted in a one-day event featuring arts and entertainment to include fire dancers, musicians, armored knights competing in live steel sword fighting, a pirate show, pottery, blacksmithing, a King and Queen’s feast, and much more.
Henshaw went on to say that on several occasions organizers have been asked, “Why here? Why now?” Their point, she says, is that with two large Ren Faires within 100 miles or so (the Tennessee and Georgia Renaissance festivals) why have one in Chattanooga?
“It’s not a competition, those Faires are widely known and respected, but there’s room for more and Chattanooga is big enough to have its own. By having one here at home, we’re
providing an opportunity for many people to experience a Ren Faire who otherwise might not get the chance. It’s free, it’s local, it’s about community.
The event IS free of charge except for the King and Queen’s feast which is a ticketed event. Unfortunately, tickets for that experience have already sold out so those seeking to curry favor with the monarchy will have to wait until next year.
Equal parts education and entertainment, Ren Faire’s are an interactive experience. To that end, attendees are encouraged to come in costume. For those of you whose summer wardrobe doesn’t include doublets, gowns, bum rolls or codpieces, a quick trip to the thrift store and a little imagination are more than sufficient. Even a Ron Swanson pirate outfit (a long white shirt worn outside the pants and belted at the waist) is perfectly acceptable and the internet is rife with quick, easy, and inexpensive costuming ideas.
A bit of advice from a long time rennie: if you’re feeling shy about costumes, they are NOT required, but most first-timers who arrive in plain clothes spend the drive home wishing they’d dressed for the occasion. Dressing up makes you a part of the Faire instead of just being a tourist. Fun is the name of the game (there will be games as well.)
To recap, the event is on Saturday, May 30 at Coolidge Park from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. The Faire is free to the public. Costumes, though encouraged, are not required. Expect to see demonstrations by local artisans, short plays and skits, exhibitions of exotic skills, sword fighting, music, jesters, games, turkey legs, and more. TUESDAY TRIVIA — Curated questions about history, pop culture, music, connections and more hosted by Rebekah Cecil.

Q: Why wasn’t my show in the calendar?
A: Because I didn’t know about your show. If you want to make sure your show makes it into the calendar, go to the website and fill me in.
Q: One time I didn’t tell you about my show but it was in the calendar. How did that happen?
A: A few venues are good about keeping me in the loop. Or maybe I happened across it in an Instrgram feed or somesuch and thought it would be nice to include it. Don’t get used to it.
Q: How many of these zines get printed?
A: 1,000 at the moment.
Q: Where all can I get a copy of Livewire?
