Letter from the editor October is an embarrassment of riches. So much Chattanooga talent will be on display the next couple of weeks. So much music! So much art! So much comedy! So much weirdness! Get a hearty breakfast, then go spend all day and night taking it all in. Take some days off work to recover. Recently I found an old Enigma magazine from 2009. The Enigma Soundboard listed all the clubs that had music, and a JJ's Bohemia show was there for every night. Nearly all the other venues are gone, but JJ's is still here, in the same place. John Shoemaker has seen a whole generation of indie rock, rap and comedy play there for the last 20 years. John has been Livewire's earliest supporter and most enthusiastic booster. His Instagram post put us on the map right out of the gate back in May. Many have discovered us because of him. The reason I found the old Enigma was because he sent me a FB Marketplace ad for some old magazine boxes. Naturally the first Livewire box will be hosted by him on the sidewalk in front of JJ's Bohemia. Monique Clouse Editor-in-Chief

RECORD RELEASE
DOLLARS FAMILY BAD CHATTANOOGAN - ONE FOR THE BARREL Story by Marc T Michael Photos courtesy of Rich Abercrombie A sommelier may expertly guide you in pairing the most appropriate wine with your meal, but who exactly guides you in pairing the best whiskey with your music? Well, for the time being at least the answer is the Dollars Family and Chattanooga Whiskey’s experimental distillery. On Friday, Oct. 23, the Dollars Family, one of the city’s hottest southern alt-rock trios, will release two new singles: “Bad Chattanoogan,” written specifically for the project, and “City I Love.” Fronted by Chattanooga Whiskey Creative Director Rich Abercrombie, the band’s release coincides with Chattanooga Whiskey’s debut of its first Tennessee Whiskey, Bad Chattanoogan. Ok, I hear you…cynical old Gen exers, children of the Millenium, and other assorted alphabetical folk. You’re saying, “They named the spirit after the song? Izzat all?” Why not, it isn’t! Strap in, this is going to take a bit, but bear with me because it’s pretty damn cool. We tend to say “vinyl records” because records can and have been made from a wide variety of materials including shellac, acetate, polystyrene, wax, wire, and foil. During the Cold War when “decadent rock n roll” was forbidden in the Soviet Union, determined young Soviets used discarded X-ray film to make and distribute contraband tunes. For this one of a kind pairing the team at Chattanooga Whiskey decided to do something new by creating laser-cut playable records made of solid maple wood. Engineer Amanda Ghassaei developed a technique for using plywood, but a playable record on solid wood had never been done. To prepare the maple discs, they turned to the Independent Stave Company (the folks who make their whiskey barrels) whose toasting process not only made the surface ready for engraving, it also altered the sugars within the wood for another purpose. Ben Rosenstein of Mountain View Engraving undertook the most crucial step of the process, the actual laser engraving of track into the wood. At 81 years of age, Ben, whose peers consider him the go-to guru of laser engraving, was the one-person patient and persistent enough to make the process work. It doesn’t hurt that his company’s motto is, “We engrave anything on anything.” In all, thirty discs became fifteen toasted maple records of each song. At 4 » Livewire | GET OUT THERE AND HAVE FUN
this point each record got a ceremonial play on the turntable before all but one (a single record with both songs which is on display at the distillery) went into the Bad Chattanoogan whiskey barrels to lend their own complex notes (pun intended) to the aging spirits. The song "Bad Chattanoogan" was written for this whiskey project, and "City I Love" is an existing Dollars Family song that is an ode to Chattanooga. Both songs were recorded and mixed at Battle Tapes Recording in Nashville, and mastered at Dark Sky. Both are Grammy-winning operations. The whiskey will be released as two blendsA-Side and B-Side, each finished with its corresponding song. Each bottle of the lovingly crafted whiskey comes with a 4” mini-vinyl record containing both tracks from the Dollars Family band. Both the whiskey and the singles debut on Oct. 23rd, the singles online and the whiskey at Chattanooga Whiskey and or online via Unlocking Craft Spirits. Smooth, sweet, and slightly smokey is an accurate description of the fine Tennessee Whiskey and the band that inspired it, though prominent notes of caramel, vanilla, and toasted sugar maple are, for now, exclusive to the drink only.

20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
JJ'S BOHEMIA DIVE INTO ROCK By Douglas Bales
J.J.’s Bohemia is one of the longest lasting, privately owned, music venues in downtown Chattanooga. This October marks 20 years of putting on shows, hosting artists of all kinds and being a standard supporter of the local music scene. But it goes far beyond that. They have had several famous national and international artists grace their stage over the years as well. In 2006 John Shoemaker and Jeni Brown decided to start their own business. They rented the space at 231 East M.L. King Boulevard. The same spot that had once been The Local, Nu-Bar 9, and most memorably The Chameleon Club. At first, they were looking to be a small bar with some light food options, and much like The Chameleon, John envisioned a space where cool people could gather, hang out and maybe have the occasional poetry reading or a folk artist plucking away at an acoustic guitar. Over the next few years, J.J.’s grew into one of the most well-known venues in the Southeast. Soon after they opened their doors, a short-lived local band, The Whiskey Biscuits, asked if they could do an impromptu show on the back patio, and invited several of their friends. It was a hit. Immediately, dozens of local groups were knocking at the door and asking John and Jeni if they could set up shows at J.J.’s. Although becoming a music venue wasn’t the original intent, it began to grow like a weed. The shows were becoming the talk of the music scene, and if you were anybody, you wanted to play at J.J.’s John invested in a P.A. system and improved the small stage and began hosting shows several nights a week. Everything from Folk to Punk to Reggae to Metal, Americana, Country, Hip-Hop, Blues, Funk and other types of music that are undefinable. They also put on Open Mic Nights, Stand-up Comedy, and Performance Art shows. As long as it has some spark of merit, your act is welcomed at J.J.’s.
After the first several years, Jeni and John split up, but John stayed at the helm, steering his vision of J.J.’s into the future. He has always thought of the place as a family-based project. Only trusted friends and family have ever worked the door or stood behind the bar, including both of his daughters and his wife Tracey Tapscott. J.J.’s Bohemia is a no bullshit, true-to-life Rock and Roll bar, run by people who actually care about music, art and creativity. They have built a great reputation with artists and fans alike. People from all across the land have a deep love for J.J.’s. For the last two decades, J.J.’s Bohemia has hosted musicians from all over the country and from around the world, but they remain devoted to the Chattanooga music scene and support local artists regularly. They were the first venue to host the Do Ya Hear We Festival and continue to support that event every year. Some of the more well-known acts that have performed there are; Blues legend T-Model Ford, Kurt Vile, Richie Ramone, 80’s icon Colin Hay (from Men at Work), Rock-a-Billy god Dexter Romweber, Punk rock matron Exene Cervenka (from the band X), The Alabama Shakes, members of The Dead Milkmen as well as members of The Flaming Lips. This just names a handful of the most notable artists that have added their sweat and their vibes to the stage at J.J.’s. It would take several pages to document all of the shows that have taken place in this unassuming venue. The list of local and regional artists that have played there would run into the thousands. Shoemaker says that his main goal for J.J.’s Bohemia is just to keep it going and continue to provide quality entertainment of all sorts, for all kinds of people. You will find J.J.’s on the usual social media sites where you can keep up with their schedule and other announcements. Their shows are primarily 21 and up, but they will occasionally allow the venue to be rented for special events and 18 and up shows.

Interview
Abe Partridge By Alex Volz This probably isn’t a hot take, but I believe it's impossible for an uninteresting artist to make interesting art. It’s not an issue of craft or education or even ambition. It’s an issue of perspective. Boring people make boring art.
about cold beer and pick-up trucks. But have you ever heard a country song about what would happen if Albert Einstein had replaced John Lennon in the Beatles?
Singer songwriter Abe Partridge proves the opposite is true. It seems highly unlikely that anyone as interesting as Abe Partridge could make boring art – even if he tried. For example, Abe has this one song about leaving a cup of coffee on the counter until it gets cold, and it's a window through which we can glimpse the passage of life and the search for meaning.
It’s a long and winding road, but Abe ultimately realizes that even if the world would have been a better place if Einstein the musician had partnered with McCartney, the time machine necessary to realize this dream would be impossible without the work of Einstein the scientist. Life is full of paradoxes.
Abe Partridge’s journey to the stage was an unpredictable one. He left his home in Alabama to attend theological school and become a pastor. But a crisis of faith sent him looking for a new path.
There’s an old saying about country music: all you really need is three chords and the truth. Abe Partridge distills that to two chords and a fear that objective truths might not exist. So... is it country music?
“It was a gradual thing that happened over a period of about two years,” he told me. “I was never paid to do it. I was having to work full time jobs while pastoring, and I slowly just kind of fell away.” He’d hoped to find purpose and meaning in the US Air Force, but after serving in two very popular and successful Middle Eastern wars, Abe suffered another crisis of faith. “They cheated me out of my bonus that I had enlisted under, and that kinda left me disillusioned," he said. “And then a few years later I got a front row seat to a war, and by the time I got there I’d about had it.” When Abe returned home, he committed himself to music. Despite his misgivings he has Photo by Cathy Partridge with the Air Force, he’s still a reverist. “I’ve been in the Air Force 18 years - two years away from retirement,” he told me. “It’s how I get insurance for my family.” Even though Abe’s music is constructed from the same raw elements of country music - white guys with acoustic guitars, twangy southern accents, Christian faith, military service - there’s something very anti-country about what Abe creates. For example, consider the song Abe Partridge’s ‘403rd Freakout’ from his most recent album, Love in the Dark. You’ve heard a million country songs
“You can’t call it country music in America,” Abe laughed. “When I go to Europe they call it country. But when I'm over here they call it Americana or folk because it’s hard to put a finger on country music here in America.” The best way to understand Abe Partridge’s unique style of country is to see him live when he returns to Chattanooga Friday, October 16th. He’ll appear at the Sound Corner at the Highland Park Neighborhood Association building at 1714 Duncan Ave. The cover is $10.

THEATRE
The Seed Theatre's Rocky Horror Show By Elizabeth Haley “It was strange the way it happened…” — Frank N. Furter, The Rocky Horror Show Some productions arrive with a plan. Others seem to happen through a series of fortunate accidents, simple questions, and people willing to say yes. For The Seed Theatre’s Rocky Horror Show, that sense of fate has become part of the journey. Now entering its fourth year, the production is growing in ways that extend beyond the stage. In 2023, DeShanee Thomas spoke with Elizabeth Haley about helping shape that year's production. The first year’s production was a viewing and drag experience event only. For Thomas, the world of live performance is hardly unfamiliar. She has worked with other companies on the live production from 2010 to 2015, both onstage and crew. As a result, she brings firsthand experience of the collaboration, energy, and behind-the-scenes work required to make this show happen which provides a useful perspective as The Seed Theatre’s Rocky Horror continues to expand. First staged in London in 1973, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The musical follows the newly engaged Brad and Janet, whose encounter with the entrancing Dr. Frank N. Furter leads them into a strange world of eccentric characters, sexual liberation, camp, and rock ’n’ roll. Its 1975 film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, transformed the story into a global cult classic, with midnight screenings, audience participation, costumes, callbacks, and traditions becoming an integral part of the experience. The Seed Theatre’s production carries that spirit forward while building an identity of its own. In its fourth year, the scale has already changed
considerably. The staff has grown from three people to ten, while the cast has expanded from nine performers to sixteen. The cast ever changes and utilizes people of various ages, sizes, races, experiences and abilities. Those numbers tell a story about more than size: they reflect a production finding its community and creating more opportunities for artists and theater-makers to participate. This year continues to bring an important evolution in how audiences can experience the show. The Seed Theatre has returned for the second year with its accessibility-centric performance; designed to welcome audience members with a wider range of sensory and communication needs. The performance will include ASL interpretation and closed captions, as well as an environment where audience members have greater freedom to stand, move, or otherwise regulate their experience. Sound and lighting will be reduced, and a quiet corner will be available for anyone experiencing sensory overwhelm. Standard props are being replaced with sensory cards, and local specialists are being consulted to ensure a safe and positive experience for all. This is an approach that recognizes accessibility not as an afterthought, but as another way of opening the theater doors. Perhaps that is the real journey of The Seed Theatre’s Rocky Horror: a production that began with a small team and a familiar cult classic, then grew through collaboration, experience, and a willingness to make room for more people. Like Frank N. Furter’s own observation, it wasn’t just a chance meeting—but this particular meeting shapes fate, one performance at a time. Rocky Horror contains mature themes and is considered appropriate for those age 18 and older.

GOOD EATS by Lori Kyle (she/her)
Thai Noodles Restaurant: This Must Be the Place Sometimes date night does not require reservations, dressing up, or even leaving the house for very long. Simply, begin date night by bringing home some good Thai food, pick a horror movie to view(tis the season), get comfortable, and suddenly staying in feels like exactly where you are supposed to be. For our latest date night at home, dinner came from Thai Noodles Restaurant at 1800 Dayton Boulevard in Red Bank. We ordered everything to go, brought our haul home, and settled in for dinner and a movie. We started with the vegetable spring rolls, and these were exactly what I want from a spring roll. They were golden, crispy, and most importantly, not greasy, with vegetables tucked inside and sweet chili sauce for dipping. We also ordered the steamed chicken dumplings, tender little pockets of chicken served with dipping sauce. Ordering only one appetizer is simply not how we operate around here. (Apps and Dips for dinner will always be my jam.) Then came the Thai fried rice with chicken. We ordered it mild, but mild still had a kick. As I have admitted before, I’m a wuss when it comes to heat. There are people who casually throw around words like medium and hot. I am not one of those people. Mild is my lame lane, and even mild decided to challenge me a little that night. Still, the rice was flavorful, generously portioned, and kept me going back for another bite. My entrée was the chicken Panang curry, minus the bell peppers because I just don’t dig them. The curry was creamy, rich, and comforting, with tender chicken and vegetables swimming in that gorgeous sauce. Naturally, I ordered extra steamed rice because rice and I are in a committed relationship. I want enough to soak up every last bit of curry. The papaya salad may have been the prettiest dish in our order. Fresh and crisp, it was topped with beautiful tomatoes and peanuts, giving us something bright and refreshing alongside the richness of the curry and fried rice. Of course, I also had to order a Thai tea. I actually saved mine 20 » Livewire | GET OUT THERE AND HAVE FUN
for the next day, giving myself a little encore from date night waiting in the refrigerator. That, my friends, is me planning ahead to get that boost for Sunday morning. The restaurant was clean, the food was well prepared, and our takeout order had every single thing we ordered. I wasn’t able to ask the owners my usual questions because they were incredibly busy when we picked up dinner and again when I called the following day, so this time I’m simply letting the food tell the story. Also, busy is busy, and busy is good. Recipe for a successful date night: Good Thai food, plenty of rice, TV trays, a horror movie at home, cuddle time with your favorite person and/ or your favorite furry family member(s). Party. Sometimes staying home makes for a pretty damn good date night, and truly makes your heart smile. Vibe Song: “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” by Talking Heads Thai Noodles Restaurant 1800 Dayton Boulevard Red Bank, TN 37415 They are closed on Wednesdays. The restaurant closes from 3 to 4 p.m. for a break on operating days.
LIFE IN THE ‘NOOG by Chuck Crowder
Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ is the most
to be on the short list of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. But I guess you have to sell more records and kiss more ass to be “awarded” something like that. And I don’t think Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ give a rat’s ass who likes them—as long as their fans love them. And I’m in the front row.
underrated band in America. To say that I’ve seen them live only 30 times would be an insult to my long-term memory. Since 1985, they’ve been a fixture. Not just in my rock n’ roll history, but in the Southern music lexicon. You like R.E.M., Georgia Satellites, Black Crowes—Hell—Hootie & the Blowfish? Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ was there. Not just riding alongside their climb to fame but influencing those bands every step of the way. And rightfully so. From sheer quality of creative output, I’d put Kevn Kinney up against ANY songwriter in the United States, past or present. He’s had few hits, but fewer misses. And the hits are as singalong-worthy as any Beatles or Oasis song—especially if you’re from the South. That’s where Drivin' n’ Cryin' shines. And they love them some Chattanooga. I saw their recent show at Barrelhouse Ballroom, and, as anticipated, it was amazing. Not just because they played for nearly three hours. Not just because they played more songs than any other show on this tour. And not because the crowd was clamoring for more. It’s because of their showbiz ethic. They seem to reinvent the energy of their songs every time you see them live. Not simply refreshing old standards they may be tired of playing but tapping a little more into the life their songs truly have beyond the limits of their original recording. For decades, Kevn and the boys have done a brilliant job of changing tempos, enhancing guitar solos, and even adding in lyrics from other famous songs that fit nicely into the melody and feel of their classic numbers. Maybe that’s why they’ve always been Southern alternative-rock darlings other top musicians respect and admire. Hell, just last year I saw his pal Peter Buck (of R.E.M.) perform Kevn’s songs with him on the same Barrelhouse Ballroom stage. True to their name, the band has many “drivin’” songs of note, namely their biggest hit “Fly Me Courageous” and fan-favorite “Honeysuckle Blue” (woah-woah-woah!!!). But they also counter the rock with slower “cryin’” songs as well, including their first pseudo-hit “Friend Song” and the sadly redneck-friendly “Straight to Hell,” which was made “famous” by country-singer-wanna-be Darius Rucker (of Hootie & the Blowfish fame). That, to me, brings some of the “cryin’” to the “drivin’” I admire so much from Drivin’ n’ Cryin’. Personally, I can’t relate to 50% of their fans. They’re trite, simple bro’s who just love a song (or two) that’ll draw the “woo girls” out in droves for a taste of the action. But as they say, sell to the masses and live with the classes. And that’s just what Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ have been able to do for more than forty-fucking years (and counting). It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine these guys need
