On behalf of the SGBA I would like to welcome all consigners and buyers to the 2014 Agribition goat sale. With some changes to the sale this year, buyers will have the opportunity to view and bid online from across Canada on a tremendous offering of animals. A lot of buzz is in the air around the cattle industry right now, with record-setting prices that lead to more enthusiasm in the industry….FINALLY! As a breeder of both goats and cattle, the fact is that the goats have always been able to generate more income than cattle by far—it costs the same to maintain 1 cow as it would 7 does. This year the cows may have surpassed the goats on a dollar per pound basis, but when you put the pencil to the paper, the goats are still able to maintain the lead of putting more money in your pocket, simply by making more marketable pounds in a shorter time frame. If the cattle market stays strong, I would predict that the goat market will rise and gain back its distant lead.
