Midland Bull Test - 2026 Final Report

Page 1

WE MEASURE FOR BALANCED PEFORMANCE

PERFORMANCE: Midland Bull Test bulls are developed on a high roughage ration to prove growth compatible with our current rangeland pastures. Midland is the only performance program to measure input and growth on this low energy ration. We take pride in offering bulls that are going to hold up working in the real world.

EFFICIENCY: Each animal is individually tested for RFI. Selecting cattle for improved feed efficiency can increase producer profitability by decreasing total feed costs without sacrificing pounds. We are proud to say our data is held to the highest standard and overseen by a third party, Vytelle, for additional accuracy.

PRODUCTIVITY: Fertility is the cornerstone of any program, and it is stressed at Midland with a thorough Breeding Soundness Evaluation (BSE) performed by a vet. Bulls must have a minimum scrotal circumference of 32cm, full extension, and adequate motility and morphology to pass evaluation. We understand a bull only makes half of your productive genetic potential, so we highlight the females behind these bulls by publishing 2 generations of dam production. The average nursing ratio at Midland is 106: proof of only the top weaning bull calves from the consigning herds.

CARCASS: Ultrasound is a great tool to improve the genetic merit of meat in demand. Each bull at Midland is ultrasounded for ribeye, backfat, and marbling. Utilizing ultrasound results in bull selections can improve heritable genetic traits to increase the end-product value for cattlemen and seed stock producers. This information is available online approximately the 3rd week of March.

At Midland Bull Test, you can shop with confidence. The bulls that make the Final Sort have passed multiple indepth assessments to become part of our Final Sort line up. We have a consistent 60-year history of gathering and producing data, but Midland Bull Test is so much more than data. We are data, and we are function and type, we are fertility, health, structure, and feet. We are consistent, and we are evolving. We are history and advancements. We are intelligent and caring. We are quality and strength. We are balance. We have your back and your bottom line. We are family and friends. We value where we came from, and we want to improve what we leave behind. We too are cattlemen, and we are proud to be a piece of success for our partners, and to the world we feed. - Steve

INSIDE THIS REPORT

CLASS# - Breeds with more than 40 head on test will be indexed in two birth weight classes. Class 1 = low birth bulls. Class 2 = average/above average birth weight. The split will be determined by birth weight averages per breed and by EPDs as of Feb. 1.

BW - Birth Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. See breed averages

WW - Weaning Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. See breed averages

YW - Yearling Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. See breed averages

MILK (M) - Maternal Milk EPD is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. See breed averages

DOB - Birth Date

BW - Actual Birth Weight

WW - Actual Weaning Weigh

205 - Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days with a standard breed specific formula. This allows fair, age-equivalent comparisons among calves weaned between 120280 days.

NR - nursing /weaning ratio or 205d ratio- averaged 205 weights of a contemporary group. Individual in herd comparison, the bigger the contemporary group, the more valuable it is.

IBW - Initial Body Weight- starting weight at Midland before going on test

GROUP1 IBW: 10/06/2025 • GROUP 2 IBW: 11/3/2025

FBW - Final Body Weight at the end of the test period, FBW is used for the 365D weight calculation

GROUP 1 FBW: 1/26/2026 • GROUP 2 FBW: 2/23/2026

ADG - Average Daily Gain

ADG RATIO - Average Daily Gain ratio. 100 is average.

WDA - Weight per day of Age - lifetime average daily gain

365 - FBW at MBT adjusted to 365 days of age

365R - Yearling ratio. Index of 365 Day Weights within class. 100 is average.

RFI- residual feed intake is a measure of feed efficiency calculated as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its predicted feed intake, for a given level of production. When RFI is used as a genetic selection tool, the resulting progeny will consume less feed for the same level of production. RFI is independent of growth, body size and other performance traits (Koch et al., 1963), selection for animals with low RFI will lead to reduced feed intake and improved feed efficiency without compromising body size, carcass quality or growth. Lower RFI values are more favorable, cattle with low RFI values are more efficient than cattle with high RFI values

EFF RATIO- Measurement of how efficiently the caloric content of feed is converted to pounds. Optimizes balance between performance and efficiency. The Vytelle Efficiency Ratio is calculated using 70% of the Vytelle ADG Ratio and 30% of the RFI Ratio. The Efficiency Ratio creates a balance between the necessity of efficiency and gain; great feed efficiency is only beneficial if it accompanies acceptable gain.

MBT IND: Combined ADG, Nursing ratio, Yearling ratio and Efficiency ratios (1/4 ADG + 1/4 NR + 1/4 YR + 1/4 Efficiency Ratio)

SCR - Scrotal Circumference measured in centimeters by the veterinarian.
