Happy Lambing!

> LETTER

FROM THE EDITOR

Where oh where did the month of January go? Anyone else feeling this or just me? As the saying goes, I guess time flies when you are having fun. Lambing (or in my case calving) season is just that..a rollercoaster of fun! When Cruz, Sarah and I set forth on this journey we knew we wanted to make it an outlet for everyone in the sheep industry. It was brought to our attention that the club lamb producers were also in need of a print advertising outler. After Cruz had some conversations with Brent Titus we decided to add an additional two issues as club lamb special features. February 2020 is the first of that kind. We hope you will enjoy this issue as much as the first two. Please note that all producers are welcome to advertise in any issue that they see fit. We just hope that this one provides a litte extra for the club lamb side. We will be offering this special edition again in September 2020. We will be taking a small hiatus from your mailbox as our next regular issue will come out in May. Please feel free to reach out and start reserving your spaces. The Ringside crew looks forward to seeing you at sales and events this Spring and Summer. You will also notice a page with a new offering from Ringside. We will now be offering e-blast services to help with additional promotion of your flocks and sale dates. Look for details on page 20. Happy Sale Season and hoping March comes in like a lamb!

Thank you for joining us Ringside!

>LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Time to sell and buy for the upcoming show season. I enjoy this time of year as I love to look at all the lambs being posted on social media and online sales. I am about to head out on a trip to look at lambs and can’t wait to see how they look in person. I also enjoy this time of year to talk to breeders about what sires they used and how they like the lambs. Do they plan to use that sire again or want to find a new one? Was their AI or flush work successful? Every year I tell my wife we are going to flush a couple ewes this year and then I talk myself out of it, but I am thinking about trying it in 2020. If you’re like me and are still waiting for ewes to lamb, you are probably growing impatient and more curious as to what the lambs will be. Hopefully, they come when they are ready with few problems and get me excited to go to the barn. Enjoy buying and selling season!

Thanks for joining us Ringside!

“Make Your

Mark”

It’s no secret Beatty’s Club Lambs produces some of the most elite sheep in the industry. However, their impact stretches far beyond the show ring. In January of 2013, the family experienced the sudden loss of Jamie’s dad, Mark Banbury. Through the heartbreak, they learned so many stories of people from across the United States, who had been impacted by him. “People traveled from more than a dozen states, during lambing season, in the middle of a snow storm, just to be at his services and share the difference he made in their lives,” said Jamie Beatty, co-owner of Beatty’s Club Lambs. Each year since his passing, the family has made an effort to encourage people to do something to “Make their Mark” on the lives of others. They have been committed to performing their own random acts of kindness on his birthday, the anniversary of his passing and throughout the year to keep Mark’s memory alive. This inspired the Beatty family to get involved with the Angels’ Wings program. Angels’ Wings is a community-driven Christmas Gift Program. The family has been involved in the program for six years. They began by volunteering their time wrapping gifts and preparing them for the recipients. However, they quickly decided this wasn’t enough. Throughout the month of November, Beatty’s Club Lambs does an online apparel sale. All proceeds from the sale are used

10 | Ringside

to purchase gifts for Angels’ Wings. Beatty’s Club Lambs then matches the amount raised to purchase additional gifts. “Each child makes a couple of wishes on their tag and we try to get as many of the items as requested, so we’ve purchased hundreds of toys over the years,” Jamie said. “Growing up, one of Greg’s fondest Christmas memories was the year he and his siblings each received their own bikes. The ability to pass those memories on to a new generation of kids leads us to purchasing several bikes each year in addition to the wide array of toy wishes.” Recipients of the gifts include low income families as well as those recently displaced, living in homeless shelters, foster care and more. Gifts are collected and distributed in midDecember. When they first became involved, the Beatty family began by helping three kids and have grown their reach each year since then. Last year, they provided toys to 23 kids and this year they increased to 32 kids through the Angels’ Wings program alone. Additionally, they helped one family through a program coordinated by their church and sent nine stockings to third graders in Ohio through a Facebook effort their teacher coordinated. However, Greg and Jamie aren’t the only ones who take part. Their two sons, Stetson and Brooks, also get involved. “My dad loved kids so much, but never had the chance to meet our boys,” Jamie said. “This is also a way we are able to teach the boys about Grandpa Mark and the impact he had on others while helping them understand how fortunate we are.” Stetson and Brooks each

help choose which toys to purchase. Additionally, Stetson helps unload all of their donations at the donation centers. Though only five years old, Stetson has found his own way to get involved in the program. A few weeks before Christmas, he came home from school with a paper cut out like angel’s wings. He said his goal was to raise $150 to buy toys for as many kids as he could. “He elected to start a cookie stand in our front yard to kick off his effort,” Jamie said. “Unfortunately for him, we live a half mile off the road so he was pretty limited on traffic rolling through. But I’ll give him credit, he sat outside in December in Pennsylvania until he was a funny color just in case someone drove back the driveway.” It’s easy to see each member of the Beatty family truly takes this experience to heart. “While there’s absolutely nothing easy about raising sheep for a living, it is a whole lot more challenging trying to make a difference,” Jamie said. “While we’ll never know directly the difference we’ve made on those families, I hope somewhere, some kid felt the magic of Christmas and the realization someone cares and they in turn work to create those memories for someone else someday.” During a season of giving, Beatty’s Club Lambs goes above and beyond to Leave their Mark.

Junior Spotlight

Connor Brew

Beginning with a small, county fair project of showing pigs while growing up in Millersburg, Indiana, Connor Brew has quickly found success from a different angle in the industry after being introduced to the livestock judging aspect and the sheep ring during high school. What seemed to be a simple speech assignment in his elective Introduction to Agriculture class has shifted into a strong passion. After this further introduction into the industry from high school coach and mentor, Kraig Bowers, Connor had the opportunity to judge on a very competitive high school team. After winning the National Western contest in Denver, Colorado in 2015 as a team, they then earned themselves a trip to continue judging at the Royal Highland contest, traveling throughout Scotland and Ireland. Connor also went along to win High Individual in the 2018 Indiana State livestock judging contest. Along with competing nationwide in contests, he also became more involved in the sheep ring during this time. Almost all individuals who work closely with livestock can easily pick out the one that has been a favorite and meant the most to them, and for Connor, that happened to be the first ewe that he had ever shown, that they called Alexis, in 2016. “My friend, Ethan Bontrager, raised her and we jack-potted her throughout the year. Later that summer she was named Reserve Division I Blackface Market Lamb at the Indiana State Fair.” Throughout the past four years, Connor has found a clear favorite when it comes to the shows. “My favorite show to compete at is NAILE. The green chips and the tradition

18 | Ringside

of the show surrounding it can’t be topped. Also, the fact that there is both market and breeding shows at that high of a caliber to participate in is very special.” Since then, Connor has had the opportunity to show, work on, and place many more winners. This continued involvement allowed him to secure an internship working with Brent Titus at Titus Club Lambs this past summer, to continue learning, in Alexis, Illinois. As a current Sophomore studying Agribusiness at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, and a member of the livestock judging team, Connor has spent more time traveling and competing across the country than ever before. He has also continued to find success on the collegiate side of judging. Now with multiple contest wins under his belt, a few specific ones have come to mind for him being the most special. When asked about his favorite contest so far, Connor quickly shared that his favorite contest is – “The American Royal. The quality of livestock is incredible alongside the arena and its’ atmosphere. It can’t be beaten.” This contest became even more significant to Connor this year as individually he was named High Individual and a member of the Reserve Champion Team Overall. This win allowed him the opportunity to join the ranks of those who had previously done so, one of which being Brent Titus, making it even more special after completing Connor’s internship with him. Nearly one month later, Connor’s favorite memory to date from his time spent judging so far was brought into fruition. “My favorite memory judging so far has certainly been having my team

recently named the Champion Junior Livestock Judging Team Overall at the North American International Livestock Exposition” in Louisville, Kentucky. “It had definitely been our goal all year long, and to finally get the first win in South Plains history at that contest was something really awesome.” Connor now has the opportunity to return to Europe, alongside his teammates and coach from South Plains, to travel throughout Scotland and Ireland, once again, learning about the livestock operations and agriculture industry there. In the coming months, Connor will be making his decision on where to continue his education by transferring to a senior college to continue his Agribusiness Bachelor’s Degree and continue judging. It is evident the lasting impact that has been made on Connor’s life, so far, and the future throughout the past few years by the livestock and agriculture industries as a whole. His passion and drive for continuing to stay involved in the industry are putting him in a tremendous place to continue making his mark.
