SCHULER red-angus

Welcome to our 38th Annual Production Sale! Thank you for looking over the Schuler Red Angus 38th annual bull sale catalog. Once again, it is our pleasure to offer you an excellent set of bulls that are bred and raised with your profitability in mind. If they don’t work for you, they don’t work for us. They are backed by over 40 years of breeding to sire desirable feeder cattle and produce females with the herd building qualities for a profitable cowherd. Every profitable breeding program “begins with the end in mind”. Carcass traits are economically relevant to the packer and feeder. Using genetics with a known history of selection for desirable product traits will add value in the marketplace for the cow calf producer. In addition to the collection of ultrasound traits on our bulls annually, we have collected actual harvest traits on sire identified progeny since 1991. Ultrasound is a proxy for the seedstock animal’s carcass characteristics utilized in EPD calculations. The actual harvest traits of his progeny are what we ultimately want to know and what we measure in our carcass progeny tests. While progeny information isn’t available on yearling bulls, it is on many of sires we use. When this information is included in the EPD calculations, the predictions become much more reliable. Both ultrasound and actual harvest data are used to calculate the EPDs used in this catalog. While Schuler Red Angus has contributed nearly 20% of the breed’s actual carcass data, we have always emphasized that it is important to “Get the cow right first!” Reproduction is the most economically relevant trait in a commercial cowherd. To put it another way, selection for all other traits is futile if your cows will not rebreed or deliver a live calf. Stayability is a measure of fertility among other reasons why a cow may or may not stay in the herd. Our selection of the oldest and soundest heifers, short breeding seasons, and our rigid culling criteria over several generations has proven our stayability is much more than a number, it is a reality. The bulls in this sale represent the best of the best. We make every effort to ensure our customers “get the bull right every time”. Every year we only offer the top half of the bulls we produce. None have been held back and some will be selected to sire offspring artificially for our 2022 sale. They are all from one herd, performance tested on the ranch and have already completed a satisfactory Breeding Soundness Evaluation one month prior to their first birthday. Thank you for considering Schuler Red Angus to be worthy of your cowherd. If you have questions about the bulls in this catalog or our program please do not hesitate to call or email us at info1@schulerredangus.net. Butch, Susan, Stephanie and David

About the Catalog and Performance Data...
• Red Angus and Schuler Reds share a common base and their EPDs for performance and carcass traits can be directly compared. • Breed rank percentages are printed next to each EPD so you may quickly evaluate each bull’s predicted progeny performance relative to other non-parent Red Angus. Breed ranks are only comparable to other purebreds or to other composites, but should not be used to compare across breed types. • Calving Ease Direct (CED), Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), Heifer Pregnancy Rate (HPG) and Stayability (STAY) are presented as percent probabilities. Thus, a bull with an HPG EPD of 15 would be expected to have 5% greater positive observations (Pregnant daughters bred to calve as 2-year-olds) than a bull with a HPG EPD of 10. • The Red Angus Association of America updates EPDs on a weekly basis. The EPDs in this sale catalog were generated on 3/2/2020. The most up-to-date EPDs are available on-line at https://redangus.org/data-search-tools/. • Email us at info1@schulerredangus.com to receive a sortable spreadsheet with complete performance data on each lot.
David’s “Christmas Dinner” drone art and subsequent post reached 100,000+ and was shared by Nebraska’s Governor, Pete Ricketts 4
About the Sale... To facilitate your evaluation and selection, the bulls will be penned next to the sale facility and sold in catalog order. A video of each bull will be displayed during the sale and no bulls will be run through a sale ring.
Bull Videos: A video of each bull is available for viewing prior to the sale on our website at schulerredangus.com. The bulls are videoed a month prior to the sale in an open pen along a four-wire fence eschewing from the typical background of windbreak or hay stacks commonly used in bull videos. We also prefer not to use straw in the video pen or in the viewing pens sale day so you that you may evaluate their movement and foot structure unencumbered.
Conference call bidding:
If you are unable to attend the sale or bid over the Internet, and wish to bid on animals personally we will have a conference call “bid line during the auction. To use this service follow these three steps: 1. Call or email us prior to the sale date to get the bid line number and receive a PIN number as well as a buyer number. 2. Call the conference number sale day anytime after 1pm MST and enter the PIN number. 3. You will now be able to place bids with our representative during the auction.

SCHULER RED ANGUS Lot 1
SCHULER RANCHER’S DREAM-9910
This will be one of the most exciting bulls to sell this spring. Rarely do we find a bull that exceeds our expectations in so many ways! You will have to pinch yourself that you aren’t dreaming as you look through the columns on this guy’s data. His sire, Profitmaker has quickly become a dominant sire for feed efficiency and ranch profitability with a proven spread from reliable heifer calving ease to triple digit growth. Schuler Rancher’s Dream takes Profitmaker’s most profitable traits to a whole new level. In over 40 years of breeding cattle we have never found a bull that simultaneously improved so many economically relevant areas of beef production. From his impressive Herdbuilder and Gridmaster ranks, to his top 1% ADG and impressive carcass scans. Much of his goodness can be attributed to the 106 MPPA cow. She gave this guy an easy start and then helped him out wean his contemporaries by a significant margin. Our Dynasty daughters are dream makers themselves given their impressive calving ease stats, fleshing ability and beautiful udders.

SCHULER FOURSQUARE-G068 Here’s a ProfitMaker son that should result in heavier Pay Weights and bigger Pay Checks! And, he’ll do all of that while still applying positive influence on calving ease, low birth weight and cow herd longevity and fertility. Whether you sell calves off the cow, background them and sell them as yearlings, or retain ownership and sell them on the rail; G068 will make more pounds. You gotta love the product traits on these three Oracle sons. Just like Lot 10, the next two sons push the antagonisms of Marbling and REA, never mind what they can do for your cowherd given their HerdBuilder ranks. It is hard to find any individual bull that can do so much, so well. Here are three in a row that are not even ETs. Just sons of three proven Schuler cows that work for a living every day, just like you!

As his record indicates, 9962 really turned it on in the post-weaning phase and makes it a tough choice between these Oracle half-brothers that sell as Lots 9-12. Might be best to make sure you own all 4 and turn them out on 100 wet 2-year olds for a uniform, high value calf crop and some amazing replacements.
Josie sporting her runner-up award for the National State Farm Cow Dog of the Year. “That’ll do girl!”

We joined with Leachman Cattle of Colorado et al to purchase Redhill 45E as a high indexing, outcross sire, and he hasn’t disappointed. Schuler RedHill 9971 leads this sire group, with superior individual performance over his contemporaries with lots of rib and natural thickness.

Our cows earn their “grazing rights” and none earn them any better than our Dynatrend daughters. They are a favorite sire group in the cow herd because of their femininity, fertility and flawless udders. This RedHill son’s 8-year-old dam is no exception. It you like putting bulls to work in your herd out of working cows that have proven their fitness to the ranch, it will be hard find them better than RedHill 9996.

Top Hand was the high selling bull in our 2017 sale. We are loving his wet daughters and he blew away our carcass test with 66% Prime carcasses! Should be no surprise this son was our high scanning bull for IMF! First Hand combines all his sires attributes with a beautiful Endurance daughter who have a well-earned reputation of raising front end bulls, just like Top Hand.

His daughters made a significant impact in our herd with some of his top sons going to seedstock operations. Although Enterprise was raised by Ludvigson’s of IA, they were still Leachman Cooperators in 1999 when we purchased him.

Endurance daughters - like the dams of Lots 47 & 48 - certainly add enjoy ment to being in the cow/calf business. Pretty uddered, superbly feminine and problem-free. Our oldest Endurance daughters have passed into the prime of their productive life with no signs of slowing down.

Dynasty, this bull’s maternal grandsire is an Endurance son we own with Frank Wedel. Frank and I agree that the Dynasty daughters are just as functional as the Endurances from the prior generation and both produce moderate, easy fleshing daughters with great udders.

Obviously cows have to be bred to fit their environment/resource base and their progeny have to produce desirable consumer beef. However, genetic antagonisms between traits and other management factors result in mismatches that occur between optimum cow fitness and optimum carcass fitness. Fortunately the knowledge base that can be used to manage some of these mismatches has grown in recent years. Given time, effort, and commitment, a rancher can develop an action plan to produce not a perfect fit, but a profitable compromise between “cow goals” and “carcass goals”. –1999, Jim Gosey, UNL Beef Cattle Specialist Emeritus

Postman might be the “one that got away”. We sold him to a longtime bull customer in Florida right before his first daughters were wet and we had fully processed two years of his yearling data. Turns out he fixes most things just as the EPD profile on this grandson suggests. Our high selling bull last year, “RanchHand” was out of a 2-year-old daughter of Postman.

When Gosey Red Angus dispersed their Red Angus herd in the fall of 2014, we seized the opportunity to purchase his Envoy (Envy son out of Rebel’s dam) daughters. We were fortunate to get 430B that day who produced this high-performing, top 1% GridMaster son. She’s been a good investment.

The HerdBuilder Index helps us narrow our search for the bulls that excel in the economic relevant traits important in building a cowherd. We often pick up bull sale catalogs and can’t find bulls that rank in the top 25% of the breed. Here are three Dynasty grandsons bulls with higher HerdBuilder values to help your search.

Schuler Red Angus has been collecting carcass data since 1991, but in recent years we’ve forged relationships to gain accuracy faster on the young sires we put back into our program. For the past six breeding seasons we’ve participated in a structured progeny test program where the young sires we sample, and that will ultimately produce bulls for our customers, are tested against high accuracy reference sires. Last spring over 1150 cows were inseminated with calving ease, weight traits, reproductive and carcass data collected in large contemporary groups and used in the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) national cattle evaluation. Schuler herd sires including Top Hand, Dynasty, and Amplify have been tested and gained accuracy through this program. Rebel has served as a reference sire for several years. (below) Commercial Red Angus cows near Medicine Lodge Kansas await their randomized mating to a test or reference sire. Over the past dozen years several hundred Schuler females have become foundation females in the Blew herd and ultimately contributed progeny data.
(above) CJ Blew, Blew Partnership prepares a commercial Red Angus cow for artificial insemination.
...The other 51% were Prime! Over the past 5 years, the Blews have marketed Replacement females (siblings to the carcass test steers & heifers) and have had some of the top selling Commercial bred heifers in the country.

Get the Cow Right First. Get 51% Prime. Awesome! 36
SCHULER RED COMPOSITES Schuler Red Composites have been bred and selected to be solid red, uniform in type and no larger in mature size than our purebred Red Angus. After more than two decades of development, our Schuler Reds have met our goals of allowing our customers to harvest heterosis and breed complements while maintaining the convenience traits of Red Angus. The Schuler Red EPDs in this catalog are directly comparable to Red Angus. Schuler Red 71 62 53 44
1/8’s British 7/8 6/8 5/8 4/8
1/8th’s Continental 1/8 2/8 3/8 4/8
Schuler Red Nomenclature:
You will notice the numbers 71, 62, 53 or 44 in the name of Schuler Red Composite bulls in this catalog; these numbers specify the approximate proportion (in eights) of British vs. Continental blood. The first number represents the eights of British influence and the second number represents Continental influence.
Why crossbreed? Heterosis, or hybrid vigor obtained through crossbreeding results in increased fertility & cow longevity. But, most importantly…improved profitability! Just three generations of straight breeding will result in an 87% loss of hybrid vigor for reproduction and production traits. Economically relevant traits of conception, survival and fitness are hit the hardest because they are lowly heritable and respond slowly to selection pressure. The US Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) reports an increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed of 8.5% by simply raising crossbred calves from straight bred cows over purebred commercial calves. Maternal heterosis is the additional gain expected by comparing crossbred cows to straight bred cows raising crossbred calves. USMARC reports maternal heterosis will gain another 14.8% in cow efficiency, totaling the effects of individual and maternal heterosis at a 23.3% increase in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. While some of that gain can be attributed to higher milk production, it is largely the result of cow longevity and vigor.
Schuler Red Composite Herd at Horsecamp
Why use composite bulls?
“User Friendly” - Composites like Schuler Reds are the simplest way to obtain the beneficial heterosis and breed complements available through crossbreeding. Schuler Reds eliminate the need to maintain multiple breeds of bulls and numerous breeding pastures for rotational mating systems. Uniform Calf Crops - Use of Schuler Reds will result in less biological variation across the resultant calf crop than rotational systems utilizing two or more parent breeds. Target calf value - Straight Angus cow herds can easily identify Schuler Red bulls that will result in 1/4, or 1/8th continental influence to benefit postweaning gain and yield grade while maintaining “Angus” marbling. Depending on their target market, Hybrid Baldy or SimAngus/Balancer herds can select Schuler Red bulls that will maintain 50:50 British:Continental influence or select Schuler Red 71’s to raise the percentage of Angus.
“Given the powerful sire selection tools found in National Sire Evaluation programs there are certainly individual purebred commercial programs that are as productive as crossbred commercial programs because in low stress environments the advantages of hybrid vigor in that circumstance are small enough that purebreds can successfully compete. Thus, it would only take one drought year to blow the purebred commercial approach out of the water should it be used on an industry-wide basis.” - Jim Gosey, UNL Beef Cattle Specialist Schuler Reds - While our Schuler Red cattle were developed as a maternal composite to capture heterosis and breed complements, they will improve muscling and yield grade quickly as the average Rib Eye Area EPD of this offering ranks in the top 1% compared to the entire Red Angus breed 37
SCHULER RED COMPOSITES Lot 128
SCHULER RED 35 JUSTIFY-G644 Justify leads off our Schuler Red Composite bulls and starts a run of half-brothers by All-Aboard. Any one of these bulls could cure YG4s in straight Angus cows in a single mating without any major change in biological type. Just so we are on the same page, the EPDS on our Red Angus and Schuler Red bulls are directly comparable but the percentile ranks on the Schuler Reds that are not purebreds compare only to other non-purebred bulls. The top 1% REA for Red Angus starts at 0.49. To put it this in perspective, if you bred any one of these four All-Aboard sons to a breed average REA Red Angus cow, the resulting progeny would have a pedigree estimate for REA ranking in the top 2% of the Red Angus breed!! Obviously, this would have a significant impact on YG. Additionally, you get the benefit of direct heterosis in all the progeny plus you would create females that are similar in biological type to their mothers, but reproductively superior.

Lots 129 and 130 are 3/4 brother Schuler Red half-bloods. Notice their spread from CED to triple-digit growth is very much in line with our Red Angus offering, as is their frame size and body type. But they both hit it out of the park for Yield Grade and Ribeye Area. These traits have eroded in many Angus cowherds due to multiple generations of straightbreeding and possibly focusing too much on other economically relevant traits such as calving ease and marbling. These All Aboard sons provide an opportunity to reverse that trend plus boost reproductive efficiency through heterosis.

This half-brother to the first three Schuler Red bulls to sell is out of a highly functional and repeatable 10-year veteran of our composite herd. Perhaps that has something to do with his best 4% HerdBuilder rank and the excellent balance of cow herd building traits that are packaged with his top 1% REA and YG.

Hard to believe, but Rebel turns 10 this year. He has made us a lot of friends in the cattle industry, especially those that breed heifers for a living. His AI conception rates are superior to most AI sires and he continues to produce offspring that are genetically superior for calving ease, cowherd longevity and marbling.

18 Karat has worked well in our composite program and this will be the third year we’ve offered his sons. G659 is the first of four 18 Karat sons in the sale that will add pay weight, muscling, and improved yield grade while boosting fertility on a set of Angus cows.

Lot 143 gets the cow right first! This top 1% HerdBuilder by Rebel will improve WW and YW, heifer breed-up, and cowherd longevity while reducing dystocia in his 2-year-old daughters. He also comes with exceptional spread from low birthweight to high growth, and had one of the highest IMF scans amongst our composites. Schuler Rebel 71 G606 could have led off our Composite offering, but we decided to have him lead of these SR71 and 1B bulls that sell as Lots 143 - 147. The bulls on this page are a high percent Red Angus and will provide only a small amount of heterosis. They should be used similarly as our purebred Red Angus bulls.

Back on the All-Aboard sons, and like those that started the sale, Lots 148-150 all come with Top 1% REA and Yield Grade. They also predict to increase payweight regardless of whether you sell at weaning, background, or retain ownership and sell on the rail. These three bulls average: Top 2% for Weaning, Top 5% for Yearling and Top 6% for Carcass weight - and all with very acceptable birthweight/calving ease to use on a set of wet 2-yr-olds or mature cows.

SCHULER RED 53 YKND336-G658 G658 is an excellent choice to improve REA and yield grade on straight Angus females. His balance of calving ease and growth would work great on a set of wet 2-yr-olds. G658 attacks stagnated fertility in straightbred herds on two fronts. First, through maternal heterosis, but also through his own additive genetic superiority for heifer pregnancy rate.

Lots 152 and 153 are a pair of Cowherd Makers by Yukon D336, who topped our Schuler Red offering in 2017. Both combine the cowherd building traits inherent in their 200+ HerdBuilder indices with exceptional carcass predictions suggesting simultaneous improvement in both Yield and Quality Grades.

Reprinted from Nebraska Cattleman Schuler Red Angus is a three-generation seedstock producer of Red Angus lineage cattle located near Bridgeport, NE. The operation is made up of a 1,000 head cow-operation that produces genetics in bulls and replacement heifers mainly for commercial producers who are looking to focus on moving their herds forward with genetics and proven data; a pillar of the Red Angus breed. Schulers also feed some of their own cattle with feedstuffs grown and harvested on their operation. Every year in March, on the 4th Thursday, the Schuler Red Angus bull sale is held. About 160 bulls are sold every year on this sale. Throughout the year another 30 bulls are sold private treaty. Schulers are also part of a program where they sell 500 replacement Red Angus commercial heifers every fall. Several of these heifers are purchased back by Schulers from some of their longterm customers’ herds to be placed on the sale. Butch and Susan Schuler, along with their son, David, keep the wheels turning on the ranch. Their daughter, Stephanie, does make it home on exceptionally busy days of the year to lend a hand. David Schuler returned to the family operation after he graduated from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln in December of 2019. While at the University he studied Animal Science with a minor in the Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars program. “This experience and the events that came with it were the greatest avenue for growth as a young adult and an agriculturist could ever ask for,” says David regarding his collegiate career. The decision for David to return to the family ranch wasn’t an easy one. “I have numerous goals I would like to achieve in my lifetime, and when I thought about it, the ranch gives me a platform to stand on to be centered on my desired achievements. Not every day is all fun and games, as every young farmer or rancher would say, but the long-term view of the connections, entrepreneurship, and being able to raise a family from the ranch is second to none. Thinking about what the future holds beyond these first couple years of integrating myself in the operation instills excitement in me beyond words,” says David. David enjoys the beauty that comes along with living on a ranch and the lifestyle it offers. He also appreciates the fact of being able to live off what the land truly provides. However, being an extreme extrovert brings a few challenges with the rural set-

ting. The Schuler ranch is located about an hour from any conveniences; this was a major change coming from living in Lincoln for four years. “Logistically, it is just something you have to plan. When to get groceries before the store closes, wanting to go to dinner with friends. I regularly find myself with fear of missing out wanting to be with my friends and the life I made in Lincoln. But I make it a priority to find ways to make the six and half hour trip,” states David. Being a part of the Beef Industry Scholars program in college introduced David to like-minded colleagues and exposed him to Nebraska Cattlemen. During this program, he and his classmates were able to meet NC staff, industry leaders, and understand how NC membership works throughout the state. When David returned home, he was looking for places to be involved within his community and the first place he looked was Morrill County Cattlemen. Within this group he has found leaders and friends with like-minded goals for the cattle industry. “Nebraska Cattlemen allows us to have a platform to work together to find solutions for the future of our beef industry. Find me the membership of Nebraska Cattlemen, young and old, and I’ll show you the leaders of the beef industry.”
Research Validates Red Angus as Most-Favored Female Ranchers across the country have long recognized the value of Red Angus females as the foundation of a profitable cowherd. Now, independent research validates those years of cattle production experience with tangible data proving the Red Angus heifer’s worth. Research Confirmation Esther McCabe, et al., of Kansas State University, led a study that conrmed Red Angus are the most-favored female in the industry. McCabe and her team compiled ve years’ worth of pricing data from Superior Livestock Auction, comparing 13,804 lots of heifer calves totaling over 1.2 million head that sold in 116 video auctions.
Rancher Trusted While market research validates the price advantage of Red Angus heifers, ranchers have tested and trusted her worth on the range for years. Red Angus females are desirable as replacement heifers because they mature into productive mother cows that reward producers with extra dollars in their pockets on sale day.
The research team evaluated the effects of independent variables on the sale price of heifer calves that fell into six different breed composition groups: English, English crosses, English-Continental crosses, Black Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, Red Angus-sired out of dams with no Brahman inuence, and Brahmaninuenced.
Red Angus cows have gained ranchers’ trust as a complete package through fertility, eshing ability, good disposition, longevity and excellent overall production. They produce feeder calves that earn premiums in the yard and on the rail through docility, feed efciency, conversion and carcass merit.
They deduced that Red Angus-sired heifer calves bring $5 to $9 more per hundredweight than all other breed types.
Over the years, stockmen have voted with their checkbooks, purchasing heifers they know will bring protability to their ranching businesses – and Red Angus females are their most-favored choice. ■
Independent research studying five years of Superior Livestock Auction data confirms the value of Red Angus replacement females. Red Angus Stockyard List or locate quality Red Angus replacement females at stockyard.redangus.org. Over 20,000 head of cattle are sold each year through the Red Angus Stockyard. FeMail An electronic tool to help locate or market ranchtested replacements. Market your open heifers, bred heifers or cows, or cow-calf pairs. FeMails are designed for offerings of 25 head of more to complement listings on the Red Angus Stockyard.

We enjoyed spending a day with the Iowa State Beef Interest Club last Fall.
We invite our customers to brand our sale barn on the day of the sale. Come enjoy the sale day, and leave your mark! 1. Guarantee & Insurance:
All the bulls in this sale have been semen tested and evaluated for soundness. They are guaranteed to be breeders for the first season but are not insured for death or injuries sustained from other bulls. Please purchase insurance if you desire further risk protection.
2. Genetic Defects:
No cattle in this sale are known carriers for any lethal genetic defects and any animals containing a known lethal genetic defect carrier in their two generation pedigree (without an intervening tested free animal) have been tested free by a Red Angus Association approved laboratory for said genetic defect and have met the Red Angus Association’s requirements for registration. Refund of the animal’s purchase price or re placement with an animal of equivalent value within one year of the sale date will be considered satisfactory settlement in the case of incor rect genetic defect information provided at the time of the sale.
3. Health:
The cattle were vaccinated with Alpha CD at birth and Alpha-7/MB-1 and InForce 3 were administered at branding. At weaning they received Bovi-Shield Gold One Shot. After weaning they were vaccinated with Bovi-Shield Gold 5 and a 7-way. At yearling, the bulls were revaccinat ed with Bovi-Shield Gold 5. They have received ivermectrin and pyrethroid products at appropriate times for lice and fly control. Every bull in the sale has passed a complete breeding soundness evaluation by Dr. Calvin Tolsted of Alliance Animal Clinic. The bulls have been on a balanced, high roughage ration since weaning with no vitamins or minerals injected. Their feet have never been trimmed.
4. Retained interest bulls:
Schuler Red Angus is selling full possession and ½ revenue-sharing semen interest in every bull in the sale. You receive possession and full salvage value of the bull and we receive the right to 50% of the semen sales revenue as well as the right to collect semen on the bull at our ex pense (and your convenience) for in-herd use and private semen sales. Exclusive semen marketing rights and guarantees regarding freezable semen quality may be negotiated between buyer and seller prior to sale.
5. Schuler Red Angus 38th Annual Production Sale:
Will be conducted according to the terms and conditions as suggested by the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA), with the exceptions specified in items 1-4 above which will take precedence over all the RAAA suggested Terms and Conditions.
