Herd Health: Herd health is excellent. All cattle have been vaccinat-
ed and boosted with modified live IBR, BVD-PI, BRSV, Lepto 5, Vibrio, and 7 way. They have also been treated with dewormer. All cattle have tested negative for BVD-PI. All bulls have passed a BSE and semen evaluation. Trucking: Bring your trailer to the sale and receive a $125 rebate per bull. Any bull(s) destined for a state that requires a Trich test to enter will be tested, at our expense, on March 24th, and will not be able to leave sale day. Bring your trailer within 7 days of the test results to receive your haul rebate. Please see Trich explanation on page 5 for full details. There is no trucking rebate on the heifers. Delivery: We offer free delivery on bull purchases for the first 700 miles and free delivery anywhere in the continental U.S. FOR TOTAL BULL PURCHASES OVER $20,000. Delivery for purchases under $20,000 but over 700 miles will be at cost for only those miles over 700, prorated among bulls still on the load. Please provide a facility where we may unload, sort, and reload. If unable to, please make an arrangement with a neighbor, salebarn, etc. We make every effort to get your bulls as close as possible, usually right to your place. However, because some deliveries are made with a 53’ ground load or pot belly trailer, we may consolidate deliveries to one location in the general area. On some long distance deliveries, we may ask you to meet our truck to lessen the time animals are in transit. Please have other cattle near unloading area so bulls are not alone. All deliveries and injuries are at buyer’s risk unless the optional Bull Warranty, (see page 6), has been purchased. Heifers are FOB Strong City, KS, but we can help arrange delivery at a reasonable cost. Free care: In lieu of free trucking, buyers may leave bulls in our care, at buyer’s risk, until May 1, 2020 at no charge. Insurance: If you want insurance please talk to your agent. Selection Guide - Pasture Proven, Profit Driven Genetics Frame Score: Beginning with our sale in 2011, we no longer assign a numerical number to frame score. Frame score is the least consistent of any objectively measured trait. It is highly variable due to facilities, equipment used, and the way the animal is standing at the time. We have circled animals around to be re-measured and can seldom duplicate a measurement. In addition, measurements can vary widely due to environmental differences. Our fall bulls have posted an adjusted yearling frame score average almost a whole frame score lower some years, than our Spring bulls, and yet mature to the same size. This is due to the slower rate of growth of the fall bulls while on the cow. We now report frame score as Moderate (Mod.), Moderate minus (Mod.-), or Moderate plus (Mod. +). Moderate is our most frequent observation and will correspond to around a frame score 5 mature size. Bull Development: Shown on the back cover are some Fall bulls making their way up one of our rough, rocky hills to the feed
bunk. This is how we develop bulls into fit, athletic individuals capable of covering miles of rough country while servicing your cows.
Dam information: The bottom line of each catalog lot lists information about the bull’s dam. It includes the age of the dam,
as well as her mature weight and body condition score at weaning. We also provide that dam’s MPPA (most Probable Producing Ability) which compares the repeatability of that cow’s production as measured by her calves’ relative weaning weight in our program.
Percentile Rank: Use the line right under the EPD listing to see where a specific bull’s EPDs ranks vs bulls of his age, in the Red Angus breed. For example, if a bull has 10% under his CED EPD - that means he ranks in the best 10% of the breed for Calving Ease Direct when compared to similar aged animals. This can be an excellent tool when you are unfamiliar with Red Angus EPDs. Parental Validation: Unless otherwise indicated, all bulls in this sale are DNA verified to both sire and dam to the greatest extent possible.
Trichomoniasis Testing: The chance that you will infect your cow herd with Trich by purchasing a bull from any reputable
seedstock provider is almost nonexistent. However, to combat this costly disease many states are ramping up testing requirements for animals entering from other states. If you live in a state that requires a Trich test, we will test the bulls you purchased after the sale at our expense, but please understand these bulls cannot leave on sale day. If you are unsure as to what your state requirements are, prior to sale day, please contact your local veterinarian or give us a call.

Supplement Sheets: The Spring bulls were scanned for carcass merit on February 24, 2020 - which was too late for the information to go into the EPD calculations for this catalog. A bull supplement sheet with updated carcass EPDs will be available online and at the registration table sale day. This sheet will also include any OUT cattle since the printing of the catalog. A heifer supplement sheet will also be available with lot information and calving expectancy after the heifers are pregged March 4th. Please check our website frequently for the most current and up-to-date copy of each of these supplement sheets.
Stayability Concern: Imagine our surprise when
Beckton Accent Y312 (Reference Sire C), a proven 9 year old bull moved from a 19 Stayability to a 7, in just one year. This caused his HB index to drop over 100 points from a 209 to a 106. Our investigation revealed that another herd had removed a large number of his daughters that were under the age of 6 from the RAAA inventory, many sold but not transferred (sold as commercial cows). Stayability is calculated using any observation that reports a cow off the RAAA inventory as a negative observation if she is under the age of six, even if she is sold as a sound, productive, bred cow or even if she were struck by lightening. Rest assured Y312 is the same high maternal cow maker he was one year ago as a proven 8 year old and we will continue to use him in our own herd.

Selection Tools - Using EPDs After making a visual appraisal we highly recommend you use EPDs to determine which bulls best fit your production goals. It must be remembered that actual weights and measurements cannot be used to compare individuals across contemporary groups, let alone across herds. A contemporary group is simply a group of calves of same sex , similar age and identical management, e.g., calves that have had equal opportunity to perform. All actual weights, including birth weight, can be affected by environment, feed, age of dam, and even at what point they are taken. For that reason do not compare adjusted or actual weights between our Spring and Fall born bulls or cows.
Consider the following:
If we scanned our bulls at 18 months and published actual REA of impressive size. • Does this make these bulls genetically superior for Rib Eye Area? No! It is scientifically proven that cold weather prior to calving will increase birth weight. • Are these cattle genetically predisposed to higher birth weight? No! In the Flint Hills of Kansas, fall calves winter extremely hard. The grass is at its lowest protein (4%) and the weather can be very harsh. On the other hand, spring born calves hit their stride about the time green grass starts growing. They traditionally will have higher weaning weights when compared to the fall born calves using identical genetics. Consequently it is common for our Spring born calves to wean heavier than our fall born calves due to environment. • Does this mean our spring born bulls will sire calves with higher weaning weights than our Fall born bulls? No! For the reasons stated above, it would be misleading for us (or any seedstock provider) to promote individual animals using actual data. Comparisons made across contemporary groups using actual or adjusted data can be inaccurate and could lead to selection or culling errors.
To accurately compare across contemporary groups and across herds, EPDs are your best tools!!!!
A common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which is ‘best’. EPDs are merely an estimate of each animal’s genetic merit for the traits represented. It is up to producers to determine which is the best fit for their operation. The EPD profile that works best for my herd and management situation may not necessarily be the best fit for your environment, herd composition, management style or marketing strategy. By correctly using EPDs we can each determine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. The key to using EPDs is knowing what you have, what you need, and making selections accordingly. Also remember that EPDs predict relative performance not actual performance. On average, calves from a high accuracy +90 YW EPD bull are expected to weigh 20 pounds more than calves from a high accuracy +70 pound YW EPD bull at one year of age. Whether they express this added weight depends on if the environment or management, including feed availability, allows them to.

If you would like to add coverage for injury or death of your bull, you may purchase the optional Mushrush Ranches warranty. We would like to emphasize that this is not insurance (like that purchased through a broker), rather an additional service offered to our customers. • Coverage is good for a period of 5 months following purchase. • Cost is 5% of the purchase price paid at settlement. • Details and limitations available at checkout. • In the event your bull is permanently injured or dies, you receive credit towards the purchase of another bull in the amount of the original purchase price minus any salvage. Example: You purchase a bull for $4000 at the March 20, 2020 sale and buy the warranty for $200. He gets injured on May 31st. You sell him and get a credit for $4000 minus what he brought when you sold him. If he died it would have been $4000 credit towards your replacement bull purchase.

Docility Scoring Although we are constantly evaluating and culling our herd for disposition, this year, we evaluated every bull in our sale for Docility and assigned each a numerical score. While several breeds currently calculate a docility EPD, this is no standardized method for data collection. We used the following technique: Each bull was removed from his contemporaries, put into a 12’ wide sorting alley and made to stand by himself between two people that were approximately 20-25’ from one another. Because this is a subjective measure, it was important that the same person scored every bull (similar to other subjective measures like udder scores or Body Condition Scores). The bulls were evaluated and scored 1-5 depending on their level of comfort with human interaction under mild pressure and in a somewhat confined space.
Explanation of Docility Scores
1. Very Comfortable (stands quietly, chews cud) 2. Comfortable (Walks around) 3. Uncomfortable (Walks faster, respiration may be elevated, not happy but accepting of mild pressure) 4. Nervous (Bull wants to return to herd-mates, may attempt to run past with little to no pressure) 5. Very Nervous and/or Aggressive (puts people on the fence). NOTE: Animals that score “5” are culled and not offered for sale.

Points to Ponder... For over 25 years, every major breed association has been selecting for growth as indicated by the steady increase in WW EPD’s shown in Table A, (right).
However... SPA data (Specific Performance Analysis) from North Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico extension shows actual weaning weight in the commercial cow-calf sector has remained virtually static since 1995 as shown in Table B, (below). Table B:

How can this be? The environment is a limiting factor that does not allow growth genetics express to full potential. Think of it like filling a Formula 1 race car with regular gas. You know that the potential is there but it doesn’t have the octane to express it.
So, what has happened? Pre weaning growth has been shifted to the post weaning phase, with an accompanying increase in cow size. While the commercial cow calf sector has been experiencing stable weaning weights cow size has increased. In fact, commercial cows are up to 200 pounds bigger than in 1995 resulting in the need for as much as 12% more feed (or 12% reduction in carrying capacity of your ranch). See Table C. Table C:

In general, efficiency is the optimal use of resources toward a sustainable level of production. In beef production, efficiency can be expressed as the ratio of pounds of calf weaned per unit of forage consumed.

Spring Yearling Red Angus Bulls Spring Bulls Feeding Spring Born bulls offered as yearlings is a delicate balance. We have to feed them hard enough to manifest differences in growth and carcass traits but not so much as to make bulls fat and unfit. As with the Fall born bulls, these Spring yearlings are allowed to roam in large traps, getting plenty of exercise to get into condition to handle large groups of females without falling apart. The yearling bulls were scanned for carcass merit to late for the information to go into the EPD calculations for this catalog. A supplement sheet with updated EPDs will be available online and at the sale. Mushrush Red Angus Commercial Red Angus Heifer Sale 50+ Commercial Red Angus Fall Calving bred heifers
These heifers were synchronized and AI bred December 3rd and 4th to Mushrush Trition A330 (Reference Sire E) or Mushrush Exacto (Reference Sire J) to start calving the first week of September 2020. Natural service sires are top calving ease Mushrush Red Angus herd sires. They were handled with our own Registered Red Angus heifers. After preg check heifers will be placed into sale groups of like kind and calving date. They will be tagged by color beginning at Lot 200 with each color reflecting a different group. This offering will include one group of summer born heifers with first exposure for Fall calving 2020. All are BVD-PI negative, Bangs vaccinated, and are current on all vaccinations. They are ready to turn out until calving.
30+ head Commercial Red Angus Open Yearling Replacement Heifers
These fancy commercial open heifers are ready to breed this spring. These older January born heifers are peas in a pod and will be sold gate cut 5 or more. They are Bangs vaccinated, tested BVD-PI negative, and are current on all vaccinations. In addition, these heifers have had a reproductive tract score done to ensure that they are cycling and have no tract abnormalities, including a small or irregular pelvic opening. Right out of our commercial heifer program, an opportunity to own heifers of this quality does not present itself very often. They will be individually tagged with yellow tags.
A heifer supplement sheet with lot information and calving expectancy will be available sale day and on our website (MushrushRanches.com) after they are preg checked March 4th. We are unable to offer free delivery on heifers but will work with the buyer to get them delivered at the least possible cost.

Contracting now thru summer: 500 Spring Calving Commercial Red Angus bred heifers Available Private Treaty for Fall 2020 Delivery Sourced from longtime customers, these heifers will have been thoroughly scrutinized and culled by the time you pick them up in October. All heifers will be: • BVD- PI negative • Bangs Vaccinated • Tract scored for irregularities prior to breeding • Exposed timed A.I., then exposed natural service to Mushrush Red Angus calving ease bulls for 45 days • Ready to turn out until calving as an aggressive health protocol is followed with a final boost given at confirmation preg check in October These heifers will be A.I. bred around the middle of May with a projected calving date of 2/21/2021. It has been our experience that these heifers will begin calving a few days ahead of their calculated date.

Sale Terms & Conditions Bidding: Each animal on which there are two or more bids will be sold to the highest bidder. Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalog. Terms: Terms of the sale are cash unless prior credit arrangements have been made with the sellers. Purchasers Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Care will be provided by the seller free for 48 hours for those hauling their own. Trucking: Trucking will be provided at purchasers risk for free on bull purchases for the first 700 miles, nationwide for purchased over $20,000, or free care until May 1. See page 3 for details. Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made. Health: All cattle will have official health certificates to allow shipment anywhere in the U.S. Breeders guarantee: All bulls sold are guaranteed for fertility, structural soundness and disposition for a period of six months following the sale. Each bull has passed a breeding soundness exam including semen test. Any bull showing difficulties in one of these areas may, if in healthy condition, may be returned to the site of the sale at buyers expense. The seller, at his option, may either refund the purchase price to the buyer or provide credit towards purchase of a replacement animal. All claims regarding breeding difficulties must be accompanied by a letter from a licensed veterinarian to that effect, such statement also indicating that the difficulty is not the result of injury or illness following the delivery. Buyers wishing for protection against injury or death of their bull/s may purchase the optional Bull Warranty (page 6). Liability: Every precaution will be taken for the safety and comfort of those who attend the auction. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk, and the owner, auctioneer, clerks, and other employees assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur. Genetic Defects: We have examined all pedigrees and performed DNA testing on individuals or pedigrees deemed susceptible to possessing a known genetic defect. We fully guarantee all animals in this sale to be free of any genetic defect monitored by the Red Angus Association of American on the date of the sale. If the buyer can prove otherwise with a parent verified DNA test, we will replace the animal in question in accordance with our Breeders guarantee. Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold. Implied warranty: The warranties and guarantees on this page of Sale Terms and Conditions are in lieu of all other warranties, and the remedies given are the sole remedies of the buyer. “Focusing on What Matters” To be profitable with a commercial cow herd, maternal traits are three times more important than terminal traits. Commercial cattlemen at heart, Mushrush Ranches was entirely a commercial cow operation for 30 years, prior to 1983 when we acquired our first 10 Registered Red Angus cows. As a seedstock provider we focus on the same maternal traits that make our customers money. Our breeding philosophy has not changed. We focus on a program, not individuals. Phenotypically, we select for moderate framed, easy fleshing individuals with a lot of natural thickness. We have very high expectations of our cows and ask a lot of them. Our cows are required to calve unassisted in large pastures, raise a calf and maintain their breeding status (our exposure time is typically 45 days, but never over 65 days) with minimal inputs. Because of this, we put extra focus on Calving Ease, Longevity, and Maternal traits, without sacrificing the carcass qualities that so many cattlemen need in today’s grid based markets. We are a family business making our livelihood from our cattle. If our cattle aren’t working for us, our program would cease to exist. Our goal is to breed genetics that work for you! We strive to back our cattle with as much data as possible because this produces the most accurately described genetics possible. We diligently record birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, and ultra sound data on every animal we sell. Additionally, data is collected on all our cows at weaning time including, weight, body condition score and feet. Open cows are removed from the herd and are not moved into the next calving season. Udder evaluation is done with each new calf. Our contemporary groups stay intact until yearling weights are taken in order to accurately describe our yearling weight and ultra sound data. Most of our in herd EPD’s are now enhanced with Genetic testing and parent verification. None of this is easy, but it is all done to give our customers confidence. We want to make sure that when you invest in Mushrush genetics, you know exactly what you
are going to get because we are focusing on what matters!
