The President’s Pen

Fellow Angus enthusiasts, Some will laugh at this statement, I hope most do. As I continue to get older, the years keep passing by faster and faster. I have a daily, weekly and monthly list that I like to get done, in between the need to do’s and the want to do’s. I put my head down and get to work, maybe that is why my days go by so quickly. Part of it is also slowing down and enjoying my family. Earlier this fall I had a heifer that would not claim her calf, so I had the unenviable task of feeding a bottle calf. It is not a task that I particularly like, in fact it is one I dread. Another chore on my list, on the weekends my oldest daughter Whitney, loves to go check cows and do chores with me. It is a time I absolutely treasure. Of course she loved feeding “Sweet Pea”, she had her chore boots on and I let her stand on a bucket at the sink in our vet room and she would proudly mix up the milk replacer and I would get the bottle ready. She carried the bottle out and fed that calf. The pure joy on her face feeding that calf and helping me has stuck with me. Slowing down every now and again is a good thing. Treasure the moments with your friends and family. Take the time to let the little one learn, create the memory not just for them but for yourself. “You will never find time for anything. If you want time, you must make it” Charles Brixton The annual meeting and futurity is fast approaching. I encourage all to attend and meet up with your friends and make some new ones. God Bless Humbly,

Brandon New 2019 President 913-680-4414

2019 Outstanding Leadership Awarded to Kansas Junior Cale Hinrichsen selected as Outstanding Leader at National Junior Angus Show.

The National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) recognizes Cale Hinrichsen, of Westmoreland, Kansas, as the 2019 recipient of the Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership Award for his skills, service and involvement in the NJAA. Hinrichsen was recognized during the closing ceremonies of the 2019 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Louisville, Kentucky. As a part of this leadership award, Hinrichsen will receive a $2,500 scholarship. Each year, an outstanding NJAA member is recognized for his or her involvement and contribution to the Association. In 2014, the award was named the Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership Award, in memory of Jim’s lifetime of service to the Angus breed. “The Baldridge family is remarkable, and knowing this award comes from them truly means a lot,” Hinrichsen said. “It’s great that they see a need to recognize Angus juniors who are involved in activities outside of the show ring.” Hinrichsen will start his third year of college at Oklahoma State University (OSU) this fall and is majoring in agribusiness with a minor in marketing. Over his past two years at OSU, he has been active in several on-campus organizations, including the Student Alumni Board, Oklahoma Collegiate Cattlemen’s Association and Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, all while staying active in the operations of his family’s ranch back in Westmoreland. Perhaps one of most notable leadership roles Hinrichsen heads is as the 2019 Angus Ambassador, where he represents the nearly 25,000 Angus breeders as he travels the country to industry meetings and events, advocating for the breed and educating producers and consumers. He has traveled to New Orleans to represent Angus at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Annual Trade Show and Conference; Canada for the Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders Conference where he promoted American Angus genetics to the group of Canadian juniors; and Brookings, South Dakota, for the Beef Improvement Federation meetings. He will continue to travel this year to other state association meetings as time allows, continuing to use this platform to advocate for the use of Angus genetics within commercial herds and the importance of progressiveness within the Angus breed. The 2019 NJAS marked 10 years of attendance for Hinrichsen, and his recognition as the 2019 Outstanding Leadership Award recipient has made his junior Angus membership that much more memorable. “Leadership, advocacy and integrity are things I have learned while being a member of the NJAA,” he said. “I’m hoping to reciprocate these skills back to the junior membership by being the best role model I can.” For more NJAS news and information, visit njas.info. — Written by Kate Ryan, Angus Communications

Don L. Good Impact Award Presented To KLA

Kansas

The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) received the Don L. Good Impact Award October 4 during the Kansas State University Animal Sciences & Industry (ASI) Family & Friends Reunion in Manhattan. Presented by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC), a cohost of the event, the award recognizes a person or entity that has had a positive impact on the livestock and agricultural industry. It is named in honor of Good, a former ASI department head. According to LMIC board member Justin Janssen, there were many reasons the selection committee chose KLA to receive this year's Impact Award. Listed among those, Janssen said, was the positive contributions KLA and its members have made to the agricultural industry, at both the state and national levels. "KLA has had the livestock and meat producer and industry's best interest at the heart of their mission since the inception of KLA in the late 1800s," he said. "KLA continues to make an impact daily and certainly fits the criteria for the Don L Good Impact Award." The award was presented by K-State ASI Department Head Mike Day and LMIC President Mark Gardiner from Ashland to KLA President Barb Downey of Wamego and KLA President Elect Harry Moser from Wheaton. More than 1,300 alumni and supporters attended the event. For photo and video highlights, visit the event's Facebook page at K-State Family & Friends.

Cultivating Accessible Agriculture

The Annual Certified Angus Beef Cook-Off Competition Heats Up National Junior Angus Show hosts a culinary competition to encourage junior Angus members to create a Certified Angus Beef dish. Junior Angus members and parents alike agree the Certified Angus Beef ÂŽ (CABÂŽ) Cook-off is one of the most highly anticipated contests held at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). In 1983 in Des Moines, Iowa, the first Cook-off was organized to encourage Angus juniors to practice their beef education skills while using ground beef. Later in 1988, the contest gained the support of Certified Angus Beef ÂŽ, and ever since, they have provided product to contestants. To add to the whimsy of the event, it was encouraged to create a theme, to dress and style the dish around, as well as prepare a presentation/skit for the judges focusing on the theme of the dish.

Angus Association (NJAA) division, where they were able to wow the judges with their Molasses Spiked Steak recipe. This recipe uses CAB flat iron steaks marinated in a combination of spices and molasses and grilled to perfection. The Black Kettle Award is given to the team with the highest score over-

“The CAB Cook-off is a highly anticipated annual event that everyone in the family can get excited about, said Anne Patton Schubert, past American Angus Auxiliary president and one of the founders of the CABŽ Cook-off. “Not only does this contest teach juniors to cook using the Certified Angus Beef Ž brand, but it also molds the exhibitors to be beef advocates at the dinner table. Participants are to create a dish using the Certified Angus Beef Ž brand, and these dishes were separated into three divisions: steaks, roasts and other beef items. Beyond these categories, the junior members are divided into age groups: 8-13, 14-17 and 18-21, with groups of two to six, the age being determined by the oldest member of the team. Sponsored by the Beef Education Committee of the American Angus Auxiliary, this event requires an immense amount of teamwork and is a favorite of exhibitors, as well as families, due to its fun nature. Eva Hinrichsen, Kady Figge, Clay Pelton, Kelsey Theis, Abbie Schwab and Nick Siemens were the overall winners at the 2019 National Junior

all, among all different age groups. In commemoration of Paul St. Blanc, who was an avid Angus producer and cook-off enthusiast, this award was presented to Kansas in the Intermediate Steak division. The team appropriately chose the Kentucky Derby to coincide with this year’s NJAS theme. The CAB Cook-off Contest is an opportunity for all juniors to be involved in the activities of the show week, even if they do not have livestock to show. This opportunity is educational as well as fun for all juniors involved and will continue being a favorite competition throughout the upcoming years. — Written by Karen Hiltbrand, Angus Communications November/December 2019 ▪ 19
