WELCOME TO THE SALE
Welcome!
I feel it necessary to acknowledge the difficulties we all experienced in 2019. From record snowfall and frigid temperatures in the winter to record moisture and flooding devastation in the spring, 2019 was wrought with challenges for cattle producers and the agricultural community. Additionally, unstable and unfavorable markets contributed to our challenges. With Trevor’s passing in November, 2018, we faced a few additional challenges. As a family, we adopted the motto, “We’ll figure it out.” And we are. It has certainly not been a seamless process, but with the help, guidance and support of friends, family and neighbors we are figuring it out. We are blessed! The strongest steel is forged by the hottest fires. That is truly what this year’s offering brings. These cattle thrived in some seriously harsh conditions, and earned the right to wear the LC brand. Taylon made some difficult culling decisions and our 2020 offering is stronger because of it. Our numbers are slightly down, due to the fact we did not want to compromise quality for quantity sake. We continue to put our focus on the needs of the progressive commercial cattleman by selecting genetically superior animals that balance both maternal and carcass traits. Once again, these bulls have been “put to the test.” Their performance test results can give you confidence that you know what you’re getting. Bulls have been ultrasounded, they have been given Breeding Soundness Exams, and we have maintained a premium health program and full set of vaccinations. Look for the “Target the Brand” CAB logo identifying those bulls with greater genetic potential to meet the rigorous standards of the Certified Angus Beef brand and its accompanying premiums at market.

We are once again excited to offer some of our top females. The heifers in this year’s offering represent decades of genetic selection and evaluation. These females have been selected based on genetic merit and phenotypic appeal. They are a crosssection of our replacement pen and offer opportunities for both show potential and production advancement.

We look forward to seeing you on sale day. Be sure and give us a call if you have ANY questions about our offering in the sale. Buy with confidence. We stand ready to assist you with your purchase, before and after the sale.

OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE AND CARCASS GENETICS SALE
EPDS EXPLAINED We have the following abbreviations throughout this book with regard to EPDs and actual data. $ Values are expressed in terms of real dollars for a combination of related traits. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Remember, no EPD is an absolute. It simply allows you to compare genetic differences in sires.
C A LV I N G E A S E R AT I N G S
HHH Heifer Bull
PERFORMANCE Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the animals ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to other sires. M AT E R N A L Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
HH Larger Heifers & Cows
H Cows
FEED EFFICIENCY Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires. $ VA LU E I N D E X ES $Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head or dollars per carcass, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), is the most maternally-focused selection index currently available. $M, expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.
CARCASS Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance from birth to weaning. Overtime, increased selection pressure on $W will increase weaning and yearling weight traits while also continuing to increase mature cow size.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for feedlot merit (YW, CW, and feed efficiency) compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit (quality and yield grade attributes) compared to progeny of other sires.
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for feedlot and carcass merit compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.

Among the top 10 sires of progeny registered in the 2019 AAA fiscal year after being ranked Number 4 in 2018 and Number 6 in 2017, even though demand for his semen has often been much larger than the available inventory for several years, this high volume, easy fleshing individual is one of the bulls that cattlemen come to see and one of the highest demand sires in the decade and a half history of ORIgen. With more than 30 different sons that topped bull sales across the nation in the spring of 2018, few calving-ease bulls in Angus history have ever offered the extreme body mass and depth of body that is a trademark of Payweight 1682 and his progeny, in combination with elite growth values and a look that appeals to both purebred and commercial cattlemen.

Calving ease, optimum impact bull with outcross genetics, great looks, muscle, performance and carcass values. Atlas demonstrates maternal prowess, outstanding performance, structure, genomics, and carcass traits. His unique pedigree includes an “optimum” set of performance EPDs and $Values. For a calving ease bull, he still exhibits mass, performance, and the shape of a power bull. He has great feet and legs! While extremely docile, he has proven to be an active breeder. His calves represent his unparalleled calving ease, wide-based structure, and muscle expression. We are excited to offer his progeny in this sale! The combination of pedigree, phenotype, epd’s, $values, and genomics is pretty phenomenal. Although nothing extreme, the exceptional combination provides valued improvement in every aspect of the beef industry.

One of the most highly proven spread bulls in the Angus breed, FORTRESS calves come easy, have great vigor and grow exceptionally well. A $Weaning trait leader who breeds profit into cattle at all stages of their life. His first daughters in production are deep-bodied, broody females with nice udder design. FALL 18-MONTH BULLS
FA L L B U L L S
This year’s fall bulls were put to the challenge of the elements. They made it through a rough winter and wet spring; however, with all the moisture, summer grasses were low in dry matter and did not provide the nutrient content necessary for these bulls to thrive. Given our family challenges, these bulls were not as closely monitored as they should have been. When they came off pasture they were thin, but have come a long way and are in great condition now. Due to the expected compensatory gain, ADG is greatly skewed.

For the past few years we’ve included heifers on our sale; however, we don’t often offer our elite females. Over the years we’ve worked on our genetic selections to produce optimum influence females. This year we are excited to offer you some of those top females. They are cross section of our replacement pen, and will offer you many opportunities for both show potential and production advancement, as a foundation cow or donor. You will find these females to be ultra feminine in their type, structurally correct, highly fertile, moderate, efficient, great udders, and raise big calves with minimal input. As well, these females are built for longevity and will have great maternal instincts and value.
