Howdy & Welcome to The West Hills Ranch LLC Operating since 1998

ASA News Obituaries Harry Richard (“Dick”) Snow Dick Snow passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash., at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of nearly 14 years, Susan Byrd Snow. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years. He is survived by his five children, Denise Snow Howland, Rich Snow, Lisa Snow, Stacey Snow, and Sonia Snow. He has nine grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. Dick was a staunch believer in Salers cattle. He began his association with the American Salers Association in 1992 and served as a board member from 2000 to 2006. He was very active with the Idaho Salers Association and served for many years as the judge for the Idaho Sale cattle. Dick and Susan served as Ambassadors to the American Salers breed during one of the International Salers Federations trips to France. He graduated from Echo High School and was well known as an outstanding athlete around the area. He was chosen to be on the State Shriner’s All-Star Football Team. Upon his graduation, he received a full-ride football scholarship to Washington State, unusual for an athlete from such a small school. During his college years, he was drafted into the Army and served two years. He married Shirley Cunha on August 15, 1953. After his enlistment in the Army, Dick and Shirley moved back to Echo where they made their home as they began their family and long life of ranching and farming. After Shirley’s death in 2004, Dick married Susan Byrd. They worked side by side, and he happily lived out his life doing what he loved most—cattle ranching and farming. During his life, he gave back to his community by serving on numerous public service boards such as the Echo School Board and Echo City Council over the years, and was one of the original builders of the Echo Golf Course. He was even Mayor of Echo at one time. George William Volk Jr. George Volk passed away at the age of 95 after living a lifetime in Colorado’s Ragged Mountains and the Eckert, Colo. area. He was born on Ragged Mountain March 28, 1922, to George and Marija Volk. On June 26, 1943, he married Margaret Burtard in Bowie. She preceded him in death in 1995. In July 1997, he married Betty Casselberry in Redstone. George and his family began ranching in 1937 and also later owned and operated a Guest Ranch and outfitting business on the mountain. George is the father of Gary Volk,

8

whom with his wife Gail, have owned and operated the Salers operation, Figure 4 Cattle Company since the 1970’s. George’s late daughter, Margo was heavily involved in the operation. Upon her passing in 1984, the Salers Belles named the Junior Scholarship in her honor – Salers Belles Margo Kaiser Scholarship. George’s grandchildren; the late Michelle Taylor and Jessica Dexter also grew up in the Salers business and were members of the American Salers Junior Association Board of Directors. Both the Salers breed and the entire Delta County community benefited greatly through the contributions of George Volk Junior. He will be missed. Samuel “Sam” Steffan Samuel Arlie “Sam” Steffan, 79, passed away on August 1, 2019, after a long, courageous battle with colon cancer. Sam was born September 29, 1939, to Samuel and Pauline Steffan in Edgar, Mont. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Fromberg High School in 1957. He served 20 years in the US Air Force as a missile maintenance superintendent and retired as a Master Sgt. He later went on to work for Boeing in electronic systems and missile defense for 22 years. Sam became a member of the American Salers Associaton in 1990 and raised and participated with the Salers breed for the next twenty plus years as Lazy YZ Salers. He was a tour host during the 2000 International Salers Federation meetings and Grand Marshal of the Salers tour bus on his Harley with a French Salers dignitary. He was a believer in performance data and participated annually at the Midland Bull Test. Sam married Karen in 1978. Together they shared 7 children. He was fond of his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycles and attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally yearly. The Big Sky Harley Davidson shop became his home away from home. He served on the board of Big Sky Montana Harley Owners’ Group (he was known as the Hogfather). He enjoyed volunteering his time to many nonprofit organizations. Sam will forever be remembered for his stoic, no-nonsense exterior and his loving, giving heart. Sept. 18, 2019 – McIvers Spring Calving Cow Dispersal Nov. 9, 2019 – Heart of America Gelbvieh Assn. At McIver’s Happy Acres,

They Are Always Learning

Intensive grazing and the opportunities it presents to the modern day cattle operation are very apparent at MacGyver’s Happy Acres, near Farwell, Minnesota. David, Maryln, and son Scott have utilized intensive, rotational grazing to run over 250 cows on their farm that used to just run 90 cows. Their stocking rate used to be about 1.5 to 1.75 acres per cow but now that is about 0.4 acres per cow. We could probably run more than the 250 head, but we felt comfortable with that number,” states David. What started this intensive grazing was some worn-out fences back in the late 1970’s. David’s grandfather had raised registered Shorthorns starting back in 1918 and for about 60 years they rotated cattle between three large pastures. Those original fences were deteriorated beyond repair in the late ‘70’s. Seeing it was time to re-build these fences, David went to the local co-op to purchase some new barbed wire and the price had gone up substantially from $25 a roll to $45 per roll. That was when he changed over to high-tensile fence that he could put in for half the cost or less of barbed wired. That was also the time they began subdividing pastures and rotating them more often to control the grazing of the cattle on them.

16

“The Gallagher rep stopped by with a bunch of posts, wire and fence materials. He told us how easy the fence was to install and how well it worked. We went ahead and bought some and began our journey into high tensile fencing,” David continues, “That relationship we established led to a couple guys from New Zealand stopping in to our operation.” The New Zealanders were well into intensive grazing since their country is very much grass-based beef production. One of the guys that stopped by was a Research Specialist that was doing intensive grazing and several others were farmers that had been doing intensive grazing. These encounters proved to be valuable to the Minnesota operation. David says, “We decided we could buy fence and expand our numbers easier than we could buy land and expand.” One of the most important things David learned, “Any pasture you have, regardless of size, if you divide it 7 times, you can double the capacity that pasture will carry.” In their almost 50 years of experience, they have found that you can get the best results with just 3 high-tensile fence wires that are electrified. If you use 4 wires and put that 4th wire lower to the ground, David cautions, “you end up with grass growing on it and that ends up draining juice from the fence. We get the best results with 3 wires. We used to move cows daily but that took more labor, so we went to moving them every 5-7 days. That allows them to be moved before they start grazing re-growth, which is harder on the plant itself. It just makes sense to divide those pastures, graze them and then let them rest some in between the next group of cows that would graze that pasture. We usually have at least 5 different pastures we can rotate to.” David shares some additional things, “We learned from Canadian friends how important straw can be to a cow during the winter. They were

SEPTEMBER 2019

“Any pasture you have, regardless of size, if you divide it 7 times, you can double the capacity that pasture will carry.” bedding the straw before the ground froze to allow the heat to come up from the ground and keep the cattle warmer. Then they push up that bedding and manure from the winter into big piles. That manure will heat up and get hot enough to kill any weed seeds that might be in it. Then, that manure gets spread on to the pastures and it makes the best fertilizer.” The operation uses a mix of grasses, legumes and clovers on their pastures including brome, fescue, orchard grass, bluegrass, redtop grass and canary grass, alfalfa and clover. In the spring of the year, they will plant wheat and sometimes oats for straw. It is then that David and Scott will mix in some Barenburg Green Spirit Ryegrass in the planter with the wheat before they drill, “We’ll cut that wheat for straw and then the rye grass comes on and makes for great grazing in September. It’s almost like putting the calves on a creep feed. They do really well on it.” The ryegrass is usually 8-10 inches tall before they get the cattle turned on to it. David believes you could start grazing it when it is six inches tall. The ryegrass will stay green into early winter and then winter kills. One year they grazed 70 cow-calf pairs on 25 acres that was seeded this way for five weeks. They allowed the cows to graze on about 1/3 of the field at a time.

looking for a good maternal breed that would make good mothers. We were really impressed with what we saw at Effertz’s and ordered semen and used it on some of our Shorthorn cows that next spring. When those calves were born my dad was really impressed with how easy they came and how fantastic those calves looked that fall.” They joined the Salers Association in 1990 and have really been happy with their decision to add Salers to their cow herd. “They are great grazers,” David points out, “and they are easy to move when they know they are going to better pasture. There are usually just two of us doing the work and they are easy calvers and really easy to handle. The labor savings has been tremendous.” The Salers cows have been a nice addition to the farm which currently runs Salers and Hereford cattle. Always wanting to learn better ways to do things, David and Scott have found Salers cattle and intensive grazing definitely work. “The pastures are in better shape and more productive, the cow herd is more productive, the stocking rates are higher, the farm stays greener during drought and the bank account stays greener as well,” says David. Those are some really good lessons learned.

David tells about how they got their start in Salers cattle. They had heard about the Salers cattle and went up to Effertz’s in North Dakota to see this really impressive red bull they had. “We had Herefords and Shorthorns at the time. Shorthorns had fallen out of favor some and we were

SEPTEMBER 2019

Hi! My name is SE MS Rebela B59, ASA #703317, but everyone who knows me calls me “Reba.” On the right is a picture of me as a teenager at the NWSS. That was fun! What an opportunity! Fast forward to my work life – below I am pictured with my new, hours old Spring bull calf. Notice my excellent udder and well placed teats. We all know that you’re only as good as your last calf, RIGHT! Want to know more about my lineage and production? Check out my résumé:  Sired by the performance sire KFI Venture 74X.  My granddam is JC Urania 869U, who has 8 progeny on record including a set of twins. Many have sold across the country and she still maintains a 368 day calving interval.  I was born to a first calf heifer at 17 months of age.  My half sister, SE 47E, is working in a purebred herd. My dam, SE 10A, still works in the Southern Eagle Ranch herd.  My first calf, a very competitive show heifer, sold in the 2017 Ladies Nite Sale to K4 Cattle of Hereford, TX.  I was then flushed providing Grade A embryos. I was bred by AI on my very next cycle.  Out of that flush, I produced a 2018 bull calf which sold in the 2019 NWSS Sale to RAO Ranch, Williston, ND.  MJB Ranch, Lodge Grass, MT, bought my embryo package at the 2019 NWSS Sale.  Two of my recent heifers have been retained in the Southern Eagle Ranch herd – a 2018 natural heifer and a Spring 2019 ET heifer flushmate to the bull sold to RAO. Now, this more than qualifies me to be a front pasture productive kind of cow! Mark and Carla have seen me working and they tell me I have the credentials – friendly, fertile, eye appealing, show ring pizazz and MY calves truly perform. Plus, I have made them MONEY!! Isn’t that what any beef producer would want?? When you take a look across these pastures here at Southern Eagle Ranch, you’ll see that I live with other half sisters and females like me. The Southern Eagle Ranch folks would not have it any other way! We get the job DONE!!

A Chance to Meet Your President

Monte Rowell talks Salers Cattle

After his first year of life near Hen-Pecked Valley, Oklahoma, his folks moved to their present-day location outside of Ninnekah, Oklahoma. Monte became a member of ASA in 1991 and he embarked on a journey that would see him enjoy the benefits of Salers cattle and what they can do for a cattle operation. As you talk with Monte, a couple things become apparent- he is passionate about his cows and he loves Salers cattle. A firm believer in having his cows work for him and not the other way around, Monte’s cows graze the majority of the year. They will graze wheat late winter and early spring, then grass in the spring, summer and fall, and, then they graze old grass and get 3-4# of protein per head during the coldest periods of winter. He feeds some wheat hay to the cattle during calving. He says, “It’s all about the economics. These Salers cows have paid their way since I have had them. You just can’t beat a Salers cow. They are as problem-free cattle as you can find. The breed-up is always good. They wean a heavy calf every year and they’ll do it all on grazing.” Another of Monte’s passions is data. He collects the full spectrum of normal data that most seedstock producers collect, but he goes a couple steps further. They collect ultrasound data on all the replacement heifers and all the bulls that he offers for sale each year. “I really believe we need to know what these cattle will do in the feedlot and on the rail,” says Monte. Each year he will send around 120 head of steers and heifers to the feedlot. All of those calf feds will sell on the rail and he gets to reap the benefits of the premiums for superior carcasses that he

22

SEPTEMBER 2019

sells. And to quote his feedyard manager writing on a recent closeout, “These bring back $6.76/cwt over cash! – Grand Slam Homer!” That group grades over 70% Choice and yielded right at 2% better on dressing percent than the plant average. Those benefits add up. Calving starts in February. Monte says calving is actually enjoyable with Salers cattle. “I go in each night about 5:30 and then I sleep well ‘til the next morning,” he comments. “These cattle are the most labor-friendly cattle you can have. Most of the time it is just me doing the work. I’ll get some help at processing when the family comes home or a friend helps out. But usually it is just me, with a sack on the four-wheeler, moving the cows to different pastures. The cattle are smart and gentle, and they really do work for you.” They will pregnancy check and number brand all of his replacement heifers each fall. Monte says he is fortunate to have a great vet that can call it to the day on when his cows and heifers will calve, “Within 4 days plus or minus, it’s really a big benefit.” His vet calls the day they will calve – Wednesday. You had better be paying attention, every once in a while Monte will slip one of those in just to see if you are with him. Monte begins processing his calves around Labor Day every year. “We’ll give them their pre-conditioning shots

then and kick them back out with the cows for a couple more weeks before weaning. It’s still too hot to wean in September down here.” Monte will put in just enough acres of wheat the last two weeks of September to raise the wheat hay he harvests each year for the cattle. After the farming is done, weaning begins. “We’ll wean the calves with a feeder in the fence line and the cows on the other side. Those calves will go to eating and the cows will go out to graze. Pretty soon, they are eating on both sides of the fence and you will see them quit worrying about each other in just a couple days. They have weaned really well for us this way.” Monte is already on board with using electronic identification tags in his cattle as it facilitates getting carcass data collected when his cattle go from the feedlot to the packing plant. Monte takes time to discuss the responsibilities of being on the board of directors and being a seedstock producer, “I enjoy being on the board of directors and serving the breed and its membership. I feel strongly when you are on the board, you serve the breed. I also feel strongly that as a seedstock breeder, you have a responsibility to register and transfer the cattle you sell. That is what supports the association. I love this breed of cattle and what they have done for me and I have met and worked with some great people that are involved with Salers cattle. The Salers bulls last longer and will breed more cows. The female benefits of the Salers breed are unmatched. My customers love what the Salers cattle are doing for them. That 3 year-old Salers bull will breed 40 cows and be ready to go for some more. The feet on the Salers cattle are unmatched. I hear about guys trimming feet on a 3 year-old bull of another breed and I just can’t believe it. We just totally take that for granted and wouldn’t think of trimming the feet on a 3 year-old bull.” Monte closes by saying, “The commercial cattleman stands to benefit the greatest from using Salers more than any other breed, in their breeding program. They’ll pay for the farm and then some. My retirement stock has four legs and they have taken good care of me. I encourage other cattlemen to try them today.” g

American Salers Junior Association

Junior National Show “Makin’ Memories in Missouri” was exactly what happened during this exciting week in the Midwest. The 2019 American Salers Junior National show was held during June 23rd through the 29th, at the Litton Agri-Science Learning Center, in the city of Chillicothe, Missouri. The competition was about as hot as the weather outside! The dedication and hard work our youth had put in was on full display as they competed throughout the week. The fun started with our annual clinic put on by Stock Show U. Juniors had the

opportunity to learn proper techniques on how to wash, blow, and take care of the cattle’s hair. Members were also able to snag a few freebees as well. As the week progressed, the excitement and anticipation that had been built up since the previous year was just waiting to explode. From the smiles on everyone’s faces to the hugs and greetings that were being given, you could tell there were going to be lots of memories made this week at the 2019 American Salers Junior National Show. From the crack of dawn until the sun set, you could find juniors playing corn hole, preparing for contests, making new friends while catching up with old ones, making trips to sullivan’s freezer full of ice cream sandwiches and different types of popsicles, and of course water fights. This year, contests were a little different. The Quizbowl contest was brought back in place of

skill-a-thon. During this contest, kids got to feel like they were on a game show, while having the opportunity to work with others and learn new things about the beef industry.

A job well done should be expressed to every exhibitor that participated in the show, as well as a thank you to all the breeders that have helped exceed the youth’s herds.

In past years for our marketing contest, juniors would get in a team and try to sell an animal to a judge, but this year juniors were required to make a flyer that represents their choice of a specific enterprise. Members and families were open to the changes and embraced the opportunities given in front of them. The passion youth have for this organization and their strive for greatness radiated throughout the barns, as they enjoyed this week full of activities they’ve been waiting for all year.

Without support from breeders or contest sponsors, Junior Nationals would not be as successful or momentous as it was this year and in years past. As this chapter of our organization ends, another one is about to begin. We are pleased to announce we have received bids from Kansas, Wyoming, and Colorado for the 2020 American Salers Junior National to be hosted in the home of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado! More information is to come but until then, start building up the excitement and planning your schedule, because we have a Junior National show to prepare that will be here before you know it! g

Time flies when you’re having fun and just like that the week is almost over, ending with the most important part, show day. Everyone was ready for the highly anticipated American Salers Junior Show. It would be an understatement to say that the cattle you saw in the barn throughout the aisles were good. There is no doubt that the hard work and dedication juniors put into their livestock will go unnoticed.

SEPTEMBER 2019

Welcome to Edwards Farm salErs & PEtErson salErs After breeding Salers cattle commercially for several years, we decided to become a part of the Salers Family and start raising purebred registered seedstock. This has been a very exciting adventure for us and our grand daughters and we look forward to raising these good cattle in the years to come.

Join us September 21st for the final stop of the National Salers Tour. We’ll finish off the tour with a prime rib dinner and a showing of our cattle!
