pring will be here soon! Along with green grass and warmer weather I hope this spring proves to be a good one. The Nebraska Angus News Winter issue for 2020 showcased a completely new look to our cover. With a lot of thought and creativity a new logo was born. In this design I wanted to bring to you a representation of our Nebraska cattle producers and great state. The red, white and black represents our Husker nation, and the windmill helps represent our great land where our members produce some of the best cattle in the country. And of course, the black cow and bull that signify the Angus breed. I hope you enjoy the new look! Coming soon will be a completely renovated website. This website will be mobile friendly, and will provide our membership listings, news, advertising information, sale and event calendar, Junior Angus and Auxiliary information, and much more. One item that we are contemplating is “The Angus Block”, which would be treated as a classified section. This service on our website would allow anyone to advertise whatever they wanted such as selling a truck load of bred heifers or looking for a replacement bull or putting your sale advertisement there when needed. “The Angus Block” is purely conceptual at this time and I am looking for your feedback to whether or not this service would be a benefit. Please contact me or any Association board member and let us know your thoughts on providing this service. There is a poll section on your annual Nebraska Angus Association membership form to share your thoughts on “The Angus Block,” or any other comments you may have. In January, I attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver. As many of you know the grounds for the stock show are currently under construction, and over the next few years will be completely renovated. Some construction is underway and a few changes were easily noticed in certain areas within the stock yards, but it didn’t take away from the excitement of those having their cattle on display. During my attendance I distributed hundreds of directories and Winter Nebraska Angus News magazine throughout the sale and show facilities. Please check out page 37 for a recap of top Stock Show results. The Nebraska Angus Heifer Raffle will occur again this year. This raffle helps involve our younger generation in the Angus breed and all proceeds from the raffle go towards scholarship awards. This year the heifer donation will be made by Poss Angus. Tickets can be purchased now by contacting me or any other board member. Ticket sales will continue until the annual Angus Tour and can be purchased at multiple events. Please check out page 27 for more information! A lot of event planning will be under way these next few months for Nebraska State Fair, Husker Harvest Days, and the Nebraska Angus Tour. I encourage you to attend these events and please provide feedback. Our mission is to keep the Nebraska Angus Association strong, resourceful and relevant. s I write this, most people are in full swing of bull sales and in the middle of calving. It is promising to see big crowds of people and active bidders at these sales. I feel encouraged by how resilient these people in the cow/calf sector are and how fast they can fight back through tough times. 2019 was a year of extremes for many people in our great state and certainly our neighboring states. I have visited with many ranchers that are working to overcome the aftermath of last year’s unimaginable weather conditions. With extreme cold temperatures, record snowfall, historical flooding, inadequate grazing conditions, and/or impossible haying opportunities, I’m sure many of you (like myself) have spent time praying for better days. I’ve come to a place where optimism certainly feels much better than the alternative. It is imperative to be ready for good times, and know that eventually they will come! We should all be motivated to see the continuation of advanced genetics and how prosperous each of us have made our cow herds. The Nebraska Angus Association has a lot to be eager about. The Angus Tour will be in the McCook area, this fall. The tour is always a great time to

meet new people, visit with long time friends, and see what the hosts of the tour have to showcase. Also, Grand Island, Nebraska will be the hotspot in the Angus Industry when they hold the National Jr. Angus Show, in the summer of 2021. This huge event brings people from all over the United States and is a great time for all of our youth. I want to wish everyone a successful spring. I hope you are all as excited as I am about the new calf crops coming up. It is always a big challenge to get the right genetics in our AI bull battery line up so we can continue to progress the Angus breed. I challenge everyone to continue using Angus genetics to advance our Angus cow herd in the right direction. Don’t forget the Angus maternal genetics got us where we are today and I hope people continue to strive to make all the maternal genetics better and better! ere’s hoping that the approaching spring weather will be kind to everyone as so many are calving this time of year! As the Angus Association board members were attending the National Western Stock Show in January anyway, CEO Mark McCully initiated an Information Sharing Session and Discussion with four invited speakers and Association staff. As posted on the AAA website, all Association members were invited to attend, and it was held in a meeting room from 8:00 to 12:00 at Denver Hilton City Center on Tuesday morning, January 14th. Members in attendance were able to hear presentations by a variety of speakers. The first was Dr. Jared Decker of the University of Missouri. He spoke about the origins of EPDs and presented data from the U of M research herd that documented the predictability that EPDs have afforded us for many decades. The second speaker was Dr. Stephen Miller of Angus Genetics, Inc. He presented the results of an internal study which outlined the accuracy of genomic prediction, and also spoke briefly about the study of fertility haplotypes.
Dr. Justin Sexten, of Performance Livestock Analytics, then spoke about this company’s vision for the future of collecting beef cattle data and its application in the industry. The final speaker was Mike Thoren, CEO of Fiver Rivers Cattle, the largest cattle feeder in the world. He shared his perspective on the cattle feeding business in general, and specifically the strengths and weaknesses that they see in the Angus breed. All attendees were welcome to ask questions of each speaker after their presentations. The AAA website has the written summary of the event and speaker interview videos posted if you’d like more information. This was a great opportunity for the membership to get to hear some of the pertinent information that is presented to the board, and I encourage all to participate if these sessions are held in the future. he New Year is already in full swing with almost two months over, baby calves hitting the ground and hopefully an abundance of perfect weather—oh but we are in Nebraska! As we prepare for the third year of our newly formed Auxiliary, we are reforming our committees and are looking for members to share their talents by sitting on one of them. These are the committees we are working to enhance for the year! Queen: Work with the Nebraska Angus Association to conduct the contest from application process, judging, awards and scheduling. Be available to assist the queen as needed and provide guidelines. Awards & Scholarship: Adapt applications as needed and present to all interested applicants. Judge and review applications. Collaborate with the Ways and Means committee and the adult association for funding for future awards and scholarships. By-Laws: Advise to Executive board of revisions needed in the bylaws and guidelines. Membership: Finding new ways to help grow the Nebraska Auxiliary with new members and bring activities to meetings. Ways & Means: Fundraising present methods of raising funds for future programs and scholarships. Please contact Justine Hahn or myself with any question and to sign up for one of these committees! We were honored to assist the Nebraska Angus Association with the Heifer raffle scholarship. We awarded this scholarship at the Nebraska Cattlemens Classic at the heifer sale on February 21st. A big thank you to Marcy Livestock for donating the heifer for the raffle to help fund this scholarship. Our next item of business will be preparing to review applications for 12 • Nebraska Angus Association News • Spring 2020
the Nebraska Angus Scholarship. The application we use for this is found on the American Angus Auxiliary website. The top senior boy and top girl from our state scholarship will be eligible for national scholarships through the American Auxiliary. If our top girl is ranked in the top 5 on the national level, she will have the opportunity to run for Miss American Angus. Please watch for details of our state scholarship or contact one of us with questions. Another opportunity coming up for our junior girls is the State Queen contest. Applications are due April 15th and the contest will be during the State Junior show in North Platte the end of May. If you are interested, please contact one of our board members and we will get you the information you need. Also be watching for updates on the website and facebook. We are very excited to be assisting the adult association with this contest and look forward to enhancing the opportunities for our young women each year! Our current queen, Kyra Meyer has done an amazing job representing Nebraska Angus - Thank you! hope all that attended the Cattlemen’s Classic found their calves to be cooperative and the time enjoyable! As calving season comes around, I am reminded how grateful I am in the new year to be surrounded by my Angus family! This past December we had a very successful winter show in Kearney. Kyra Meyer exhibited the Supreme Champion Breeding Animal with her Bred and Owned heifer. The champion Owned Heifer was exhibited by Kasey Meyer. At our meeting, we discussed the upcoming events for the year such as STAR, Raising the Bar, State Show, Junior Nationals, and LEAD. Raising the Bar will take place in Denver, Colorado this year as we tour the Colorado State campus with the theme of “Climbing to New Angus Peaks.” It will take place April 16-19 with a registration deadline of March 1. I hope to see many of you there as I will be helping put it on this year! I hope everyone plans to attend “Making Dreams Come True” in Orlando, FL! LEAD this year will occur July 30-August 2. You can find the online registration form on the
NJAA website under the “Conferences” tab. We have many exciting and different places/facilities to tour, and I can’t wait to share them with you all. State Show will be hosted in North Platte again this year May 29-31. For information regarding hotels, please contact advisor Kami Meyer. The National Junior Angus Association is moving towards a paperless Bronze, Silver, and Gold system. The new program will be found online, and you can reach out to me with more details. The online program will save automatically, making it much easier to fill out your Silver and Gold awards after you have completed your Bronze award! If you have any questions regarding the state association, upcoming shows or conferences, or anything on the national level, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Kyra Meyer The 2019-2020 Miss Nebraska Angus Queen, Kyra Meyer has experienced plenty of areas in the Angus breed throughout her life. Kyra grew up on a farm near Blue Hill, Nebraska, with her parents Brandon and Kami and her sister Kasey. Her family operates a purebred Angus cow/calf operation and farm soybeans and corn. Kyra has been raised helping her family with the Angus cow/calf operation and through her family’s operation has always looked forward to their annual bull sale where she could market her own calves. Having this experience helped propel Kyra into FFA, 4-H, and the Angus industry. Since 2013 Kyra has attended Junior Nationals and says she enjoys participating in the show ring and in other competitions held including quiz bowl, team sales, livestock judging, cook-off, photography, and skill-a-thon. Along with Nationals, Kyra has been an attendant in the LEAD Conference since 2016 and in 2019 attended the Raising the Bar event. She has held several Nebraska Junior Officer board positions including Director, Historian, and currently serving her second term as the 1st Vice President. When asked how she became interested in being the Nebraska 16 • Nebraska Angus Association News • Spring 2020
Angus Queen Kyra replied with “I had grown up with the Association and always looked up to previous queens. I wanted to be a role model for others just like they had been for me.”
Kyra, who is the first one in her family to hold a queen title officially started her reign at the Nebraska State Fair in August of 2019. So far, she has represented the Association by handing out awards at the Nebraska State Fair ROV Show, she attended Husker Harvest Days, spoke at the Nebraska Angus Association Annual Banquet in December, and recently attended the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney, Nebraska. She has not been able to travel outside of Nebraska yet as queen, but plans to attend the National Junior
Angus Show in July in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Kyra anxiously awaits the queen’s luncheon in Pennsylvania. She was able to attend as a guest previously and saw how special the occasion was. Her advice as queen to any young woman considering the title is “for anyone wanting to become queen; go for it! Whether you be a member or officer, do not be afraid to put yourself out there and represent our breed.” Kyra will be attending Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas, this fall where she will be majoring in Ag Science. She hopes this takes her to an Ag communication degree at Kansas State when her two years are completed at Cloud. During her time at Cloud she will be playing on the softball team. She is super excited for her future and has set goals including running for the Nebraska Junior Angus Association President position and hoping to represent Nebraska in the National Showmanship contest.
Angus Family News Birth Announcement! Quinn Haley Shroyer, daughter of Jared and Hannah Shroyer, was born January 31st, 2020 at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nebraska. Hannah is a graphic and web designer for several Nebraska Angus Association members and creates multiple catalogs, advertisements, and websites throughout the year. Grandparents are Tom and Helen Feller of Wisner, NE and Dennis and Stacey Shroyer of Superior, NE. Hannah says, "Quinn's arrival during the height of bull sale season was not ideal timing for me, but we are incredibly grateful for this blessing. Thank you to all of my clients for their business and for the congratulations."

Agreement combines American Angus Association offerings with G.A.P. certification. Producers seeking to document their added value on Angus feeder calves just got a more cost-effective option. EarthClaims, LLC, and the American Angus Association® have reached an agreement to provide bundled verification services. The bundled service includes certification under the Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Program (G.A.P.) certification from EarthClaims with options for age and source, Angus-sired genetics, non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC) and NeverEver 3 (NE3) verification by AngusLinkSM, a USDA Process Verified Program (PVP). By working together, the companies are able to streamline the

Ten scholarships will be awarded, and top five young women will compete for Miss American Angus. The American Angus Auxiliary 2020 scholarship applications for National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members are due May 1. Ten scholarships will be awarded, five to young men and five to young women. The top five young womens’ applications are the basis from which the candidates for Miss American Angus are chosen. Apply now for an Auxiliary scholarship. “We are proud to continue the tradition of assisting young Angus juniors with their education,” said Pam Velisek, Auxiliary scholarship chairperson. “We are always impressed with the high-quality candidates we see in the application process.” Scholarship applicants are judged on high school academic achievements, Angus awards and

The Angus Foundation continues to support the next generation of agriculturists.
Scholarship applications are now available for college students associated with the Angus breed. This past year, the Angus Foundation awarded $227,700 in scholarships at the 2019 National Junior Angus Show alone, and next year will be no different. The Angus Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students each year as a way to help Angus youth achieve their educational goals and offset the continually rising costs of tuition at higher education institutions. “We have a responsibility to support the next generation of agriculturalists here at the Angus Foundation,” said Rod Schoenbine, Angus Foundation director of development. “With education costs being higher than ever, we want to help students in their educational endeavors, and awarding scholarships is a key factor.” Today, countless past junior Angus

members have benefitted from the financial support of Angus Foundation-funded scholarships. This year, five past scholarship recipients were put in the spotlight in the Angus Foundation Success Story campaign. “The Angus Foundation’s core mission of youth, education and research are so important to developing young people to come back into our breed, into our community and to our industry as a whole,” said Jara Settles, vice president of livestock mitigation at the Livestock Marketing Association and past scholarship recipient. “If we don’t invest in these young people and welcome them back in and give them truly viable opportunities in terms of education and professional growth, they might leave us.” To see the stories and hear the success of past recipients, visit angus.org/foundation. Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships Applicants for undergraduate and graduate scholarships must have, at one time, been a member of the National Junior Angus Associationâ (NJAA) and currently be an active junior, regular or life member of the
American Angus Associationâ. The following documents are required to be considered for a 2020 undergraduate or graduate scholarship: the 2020 scholarship application; three letters of recommendation; copy of current high school/college/university transcript; and applicant’s Association member code. Undergraduate and graduate scholarship applications, eligibility requirements and application guidelines can be found online at AngusFoundation.org. Applications are due May 1, 2020. Allied Angus Breeders Scholarships The Angus Foundation also will award three $1,000 scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students who use Angus genetics in a commercial cattle operation breeding program or whose parents use Angus genetics. Emphasis will be placed on applicants’ knowledge of the cattle industry and perspective of the Angus breed. Applicants or their parents/guardians must be members of the American Angus Association or have an affiliate member code. Certified Angus Beef/National Junior Angus Association Scholarship Since 1990, the NJAA has teamed up with Certified Angus Beef (CAB) LLC to help Angus youth pursue their higher education goals. The selected applicant will receive a $1,000 scholarship. A separate application from the Angus Foundation scholarship application is required for the CAB/NJAA scholarship. Requirements are similar to the general Angus Foundation scholarship; more details can be found on the application. The application is available on the Angus Foundation website. “At the Angus Foundation’s core are youth and education,” Schoenbine said. “Our Angus and allied commercial producer youth deserve the best higher education learning environment they can experience, and these scholarship opportunities help make that possible.” Since 1998, the Angus Foundation has awarded more than $3.5 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships. ohn shurr
John L. Schurr, 79, of Farnam, died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney on Saturday, January 4, 2020.
John L. was born December 21, 1940, to John and Estella Schurr in Farnam where he grew up on the family farm. John graduated from Farnam High School in 1958 then attended the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University until the death of his dad in 1960 brought him back to work on the farm. In 1961 he started raising purebred Angus cattle and farming with his brother, Jerry, then in 1983 they added a purebred Charolais herd to the ranch. On April 4, 1965, John married Kay Schultheiss in North Platte. The couple lived west of Farnam and had three sons, all who became part of the Schurrtop Angus and Charolais Ranch, which has been a farming, cattle feeding, and purebred operation going on four generations. John was proud that each son earned national recognition on livestock judging teams. John had a great love for cattle and over the years served on numerous committees in the Angus and Charolais breeds. He served two terms on the American Angus Association Board of Directors, was on the Certified Angus Beef Board, a member
of the Angus Foundation, Past Director of the Nebraska Angus Association, and Director of Farm Credit Services. Schurrtop has been recognized in competitions including the National Western Stock Show in Denver where he exhibited his cattle for fifty consecutive years, the Great Western Beef Expo, and Beef Empire Days in Kansas where they won the coveted Brookover Award. John had been recognized with numerous awards over the years and was selected as Nebraska Angus Association 2010 Producer of the Year. He had a true passion for cattle feeding and believed in letting the merits of his cattle do the talking. Along with his work, John was also active in the Farnam community where he served on various boards for school, church and the Gothenburg Hospital Foundation. He was a 4-H club leader for 35 years and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gothenburg. He was also a member of the Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Nebraska Cattlemen, and the Colorado Livestock Association. He will be remembered for his work across the beef industry.
He is survived by his wife, Kay, of Farnam; sons, Marty Schurr, and his children, Adalyn and Gavon, all of Maywood and Ryan (Kari) Schurr and their children, Luke and Reese, all of Farnam; brother, Jerry Schurr, of Farnam; sister, Janet (John) Speck, of St. Paul; brother-in-law, Dean (Marcia) Schultheiss, of Orange, California; sisters-in-law, Rose Ann Young, of Martinez, Georgia and Virginia (Jerry) Kasha, of Canton, Georgia; as well as other family. John was preceded in death by his son, Wayne; his father, John; mother and stepfather, Estella and LeRoy Tillotson; and sister-in-law, Linda Schurr. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gothenburg. Burial took place at the Maywood Cemetery. Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be used for local organizations in the Farnam/Maywood communities. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore were in charge of the arrangements.
