Official Publication of the Kansas Angus Association, Inc. Fall ( Sept./Oct.) ad/copy deadline : Aug . 10
Notes & News from Anne When I wrote my last column, I do not think any of us could have predicted what March and April had in store for us. We have added words and phrases to our vocabulary that we never or barely had used before. I know I probably had never spoke the word pandemic prior to mid- March and who knew what social distancing meant and that within a few days the phrase would become so prominent. Sales Despite shutdowns and social distancing bull sale across Kansas went on as planned with Angus sales realizing steady sales and strong averages despite less people in the seats and more online and phone bidding. According to Regional Manager Jeff Mafi, 3234 registered Angus bulls sold by members of the American Angus Association in Kansas through public auction grossed over 15 million dollars to average $4697 with several hundred more bulls sold via private treaty off of Kansas farms and ranches. We applaud our leaders for deeming agriculture essential and to ensuring that livestock sales and auctions went on as planned with precautions. Farmers and ranchers are very resilient and adapt to changes, extreme weather conditions as well as up and down markets and most were doing well despite the pandemic. Then just a couple of weeks ago Covid 19 swept through our nations packing plants making an already unbalanced beef pricing system between producers, packers and retailers grow even more unbalanced. We have seen cattleman look at ways to shift some of their fed cattle to local markets, we have seen a big resurgence of groups talking about mandatory country origin labeling again, producers and feeders are demanding an investigation into packer profits resulting in President Trump signing an executive order to investigate and more. The opinions of cattlemen and beef organizations on how to fix or deal with the situation are as diverse as our farms and ranches across the United States but one thing is for sure it has cattleman banding together in various ways to be heard. KJAA modifies Preview Show schedule As of this writing, Kansas Junior Angus Association members are planning their annual summer Preview Show. The Preview Show will be June 6-7 on the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson the schedule and events have been modified to comply with the Kansas Covid 19 phase 3 reopening plan. The Northeast District’s 60th annual show has been tentatively rescheduled to June 20 in Effingham at the Atchison County Fairgrounds. All Kansas junior Angus enthusiasts are welcome to participate in both shows. Please see page 6 for more information on entries and the modified schedule also check the KAA website- www.kansasangus.org, watch for email updates and follow Kansas Angus Association on Facebook for updates and changes as the situation remains uncertain and depends on the Kansas opening phases. Congrats Graduates Graduating high school and college students have had to deal with cancelled, modified, or rescheduled graduation ceremonies. I would like to extend a big congratulations to our Kansas Angus Association members and KJAA members who are the class of 2020. with a warm welcome from the conference organizer and Women Connected chairman, Anne Lampe, as well as Gina Hope, American Angus Auxiliary president. The evening set the scene for a great few days as CAB Executive Chef Ashley Breneman and her culinary team led attendees through a wine and dine dinner experience, complete with five wine and Certified Angus Beef ® brand dish pairings. “Participants learned more about the Certified Angus Beef by attending interactive sessions led by CAB staff including meat scientists, chefs, marketing specialists and legal experts,” Lampe said. “As Angus producers, the sessions gave the attendees information to go back to their farms or ranches and have conversations that can promote the brand to both consumers and beef producers." After an evening of great food and fundraising for the American Angus Auxiliary, Thursday was filled with education, fun and lots of cooking. The foundation of any good dish begins with quality ingredients. This is where Daniel Clark, meat scientist at Certified Angus Beef, explained the ten specifications the Certified Angus Beef brand uses to qualify on select percent with the trademarked gold shield.
After defining the specs at Certified Angus Beef, attendees suited up in their aprons and divided into four teams to compete in the “Beef Cut Battle.” The teams were led by Chef Breneman and Chef Tony Biggs and were tasked with preparing a specific cut of beef alongside their teammates. “Our Beef Cut Battle is a session that we love to do at the Culinary Due to restrictions in place by the City of St. Joseph because of the Center with groups that just want to dive in and learn more about the differCOVID-19 pandemic, the Association is operating with a limited inent types of cuts that come from the animal,” Breneman said. “We specifibuilding staff. Angus Auxiliary Hosts 5 Biennial Women Angus Connected
Women gather from across the country to learn and engage in Angus Some things make better sense together: peanut butter and jelly, grandparents and spoiled grandkids, and finally, Angus cattle and strong women. On March 4-6, 2020, 27 Angus Cattlewomen from across the country gathered for the 5th biennial Women Connected Conference at the Certified Angus Beef ® Culinary Center in Wooster, Ohio.
On Friday, the conference wrapped up with learning about how CAB protects the brand and touring the office. “I am very thankful to the Angus Foundation for supporting this event because let’s face it, we probably would not be here if that was not granted to us,” said Becky Vincent, conference attendee and owner of Tri-Pine Farm in Caton, Ohio. “I’m excited to go home and get on the websites to learn a little bit more about the Foundation and the Angus Auxiliary and how I can become more involved.”

Summer 2020 â–Ş 9
Kansas Angus Auxiliary 2020 has been quite the year this far and it is no secret that what we are currently going through seems very uncertain. One thing for certain, as temperatures are warming up and the weather is changing, farmers and ranchers are continuing to work day in and day out! The scholarship committee has reviewed the impressive applications received by Kansas Angus Juniors and we are excited for the results in June. I encourage Junior members to continue to work hard on their Angus projects in hopes to showcase them later this summer. Myself, the Auxiliary, and the rest of Kansas Angus parents truly enjoy supporting our juniors throughout the events of the summer shows at both state and national level. Best of luck to everyone participating and hope to see you out this summer! The next Auxiliary meeting will be on June 6 at 1:30 pm at the Kansas Preview Show . Hope to see you all there!
