State Fair is over so that means it’s time to vaccinate and wean calves and prepare for harvest!
Seems like this has been one of the most difficult years in agriculture especially in Indiana. The wet spring made it difficult to plant and bale following a muddy winter that tore up pastures and now is causing foot rot and flies to be aggressive. You might be saying, Bruce that’s a lot of negativity given your opening sentence. I’d agree with you so let’s move on to something more forward looking and positive.

Herefords were the dominate breed again at the 2019 Indiana State Fair. I was especially proud of the showmanship results when four of the top fifteen places were Hereford kids. Payton Farmer took top award in Senior Showmanship in her tenth year of 4H. Maddox Gunn, Brody Everhart and Sage Lawrence all made the top five in their divisions. The 4H Show was extremely competitive as always and the judge made special comments about our breed being one on the rise and super good. It was a special evening during the Grand Drive when Lawrence Duncan was inducted into the Indiana Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame. In spite of their personal family tragedy, the Duncan family stood with this legend of our industry. Congratulations to everyone making it to the great State Fair and looking forward to the progeny output of these amazing females shown. Fall is right around the corner and if you are like me you are making preparations to wean the 2019 calf crop. These are the things on my to do list and maybe yours to help make weaning as stress free as possible: • Consult preweaning vaccination protocols with veterinarian • Collect data and DNA tissue samples • Check the gates, fences, pens and fresh water troughs • Ensure quality grass hay and fresh feed are on hand

Monitoring cattle (cows and calves) during this high stress period will pay big dividends and ensure the calves get started on the right foot and the cows prepare for the winter.
I also just returned from the summer AHA board meeting in Sioux Falls hosted by president Pete Atkins. In our meetings we reviewed the financials and Certified Hereford Beef. We also received updates on the new MyHerd and selected the Hall of Merit and Hall of Fame inductees. These were just a sampling of the many topics we reviewed and acted upon. I’d encourage all of you to attend the Annual Meeting, October 25-27th in Kansas City to hear more about what’s happening in your association enjoy all the Hereford fellowship and wonderful cattle. Take time to reflect on the positives and look forward to the opportunities!

Member news Lawrence Duncan inducted into Indiana Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame
Some may know him as Lawrence Duncan, others may know him as the “energizer bunny.” Lawrence Duncan owns Able Acres on the west side of Wingate, Indiana. Harvey Duncan, his father, started raising Hereford cattle in 1944, but before that, they raised Duroc pigs. During Lawrence’s high school career, he was the State Champion in Livestock Judging. After he graduated from Richland Township in 1954, Lawrence attended Purdue University, majoring in Animal Husbandry. In 1958, Lawrence married Patsy and returned back home to farm. December 8, 1958 was the start of something great – their first Duncan family Hereford sale. After that, Lawrence and Harvey began to expand their herd of Hereford cattle, while continuing to raise swine. Every year since November of 1973, Able Acres has held an annual sale. Just to give some details about exactly how great of a breeder Lawrence is, some have said that “he has spent more time taking care of livestock than anyone East of the Mississippi.” From one of their catalogues that was published in 2012, it stated that they have sold 2047 lots of bulls, cows, heifer calves, and over 540 steers. These numbers don’t even begin to include all of the other cattle that have been sold in between these sales. Able Acres has received six Golden Bull awards from the American Hereford Association. Lawrence has served on the committee of the Indiana Performance Tested Bull Sale representing Indiana Hereford Association. Able Acres’ bulls are typically the highest selling Hereford bull in the Indiana Performance Sale.
Able Acres utilizes all tools available to provide reliable, honest, and quality genetics that have been sold to buyers throughout the United States. Able Acres has had multiple champion bulls, heifers, and steers at the Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky state fairs. Not to mention the winners in Fort Worth, North American, and countless county fairs. Currently, there are around 150 cows in production as well as crops and hay. Lawrence’s pride and joys include his five children: Lary, Gary, David, Andy, and Caril, and his nine grandchildren. Lawrence will leave the farm to watch his grandchildren exhibit their grand champion winning livestock, but not much else. Able Acres will have their 47th annual sale in November of 2019, Thanksgiving weekend. Congratulations and thank you Lawrence Duncan for all of your hard work and dedication to improve the genetics in the cattle industry!
Virginia Rose Miller January 11, 1923 - August 17, 2019
The Osgood community lost a lifelong member on Saturday August 17, Virginia Rose (Stork) Miller, age 96 passed away. Virginia was born on January 11, 1923 the daughter of the late John Henry and Maude (Huntington) Stork in Otter Creek Village outside of Osgood. The family moved a few years later just down the road. Virginia was a proud Osgood Cowboy graduate, class of 1941. After high school she went off and attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute and graduated in 1945. She returned home after college and began to teach. It was at this time she had caught the eye of a young man named Howard Miller. Howard drove by her house for a couple weeks, before finally stopping to meet her. The two of them united in marriage on June 28, 1952. Early on in her teaching career she started at Rising Sun Schools and then spent a few years in the Greensburg School system. However, life would see her take a break from teaching for a few years to start her family, Howard and Virginia were blessed with 2 children Ellen and Mike. She entered back into the teaching world and spent the next 20 plus years teaching at Jac-Cen-Del High School before retiring on May 31, 1988. Howard and Virginia owned and operated a farm outside of Osgood, she mowed her own grass until her mid 90’s. She loved 8
seeing the new calves born every year and they hosted several fall calf sales at the big red barn. On July 2, 1990, her world drastically changed when son Mike was fatally injured in a farm accident, then Howard’s passing in 2004, left Virginia and Ellen in charge. Grandson Kurt has entered the picture in recent years and the farm continues to raise cattle and crops today. In 2010 she was given the Golden Hoosier Award. Virginia was a lifelong member of the Osgood United Methodist Church, member of Delta Kappa Gamma, former member of Entre Nous and Indiana Poll-ette Association. Howard and Virginia were inducted into the Indiana Polled Hereford Association Hall of Fame in 1998. She is survived by daughter Ellen (William) Davis of Greendale, grandsons Kurt (Sydney Keene) Miller of Osgood and Sean (Baili Miller) Lynch of Osgood, daughter in law Tina Miller (John) Lynch of Osgood, and great grandson Owen Lynch, along with several niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by family members; brother John (Ella Mae) Stork, and sisters; Mildred Stork, Elizabeth Stork, Mary (Joe) Smith, Grace (Roy) Landis, and Ruby (Raymond) Reibel. The family would like to give special thanks to John Stork, Candy Miller, Baili Miller, Carol Winters, Dee Huskey, and Lila Neal and family.

DOES PRECONDITIONING CALVES PAY? Without a doubt, the simple answer is YES – if done properly. Preconditioning can mean different things to different people. Solely injecting the calf with some type of vaccine does not mean the calf is preconditioned. The basics of preconditioning include vaccinations, weaning, dehorning, castration, and starting calves on a high energy diet.
Vaccinations Every cattle operation will have unique vaccination requirements based on individual herd goals. Selecting the proper vaccines for your herd can be a daunting task considering the large number of vaccines that are available. Develop an effective vaccination protocol with your heard health veterinarian. This means first and foremost having a good working relationship with your herd veterinarian and listening to their recommendations. At a minimum, a Modified Live Vaccine (MLV) with IBR/BVD/PI3/BRSV should be given to calves 30-60 days old. A calf’s maternal antibodies from their mother start to weaken meaning calves are more susceptible to disease. A 7-way or 8-way clostridial, Pinkeye and Pasteurella vaccines are also commonly given at this time. The sooner the vaccines are given to calves the quicker they will have protection against any infection. Booster vaccination(s) should be given 4-6 weeks following initial vaccination to ensure maximum protection. The
main goal of a calf vaccination program is to build a high level of immunity prior to weaning in order to decrease the risk of calves getting sick during this stressful time. ALWAYS properly store and administer vaccines according to the label directions, adhere to specified meat withdrawal times, and follow all Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) guidelines.

Weaning An important part of any preconditioning program is weaning the calves at least 30 days prior to moving them to the feedlot or through various sales. These calves will perform better with less death loss which in return equals more money in your pocket if you retain ownership. If you are selling those animals, you can demand a premium for calves that are ready to go. This can be a bit of a controversial topic. Many cow-calf producers feel they do not always get paid for the extra effort. If that is the case, find a new market!
Castration Castration is a huge part of any preconditioning program. Typically, banding bull calves at birth is more preferable. I caution you to make sure both testicles are below the band before the calf is released. I would not recommend banding calves past May 1st as to prevent fly issues. Open castration with a knife can be performed any day of the year. Castrating calves 30 days prior to weaning will yield big dividends.
If you think it does not pay to round up calves and vaccinate prior to weaning, think again. Cow-calf producers who do not vaccinate before weaning and have yet to deal with serious disease challenges…consider yourself very lucky. Calves vaccinated prior to weaning can still show signs of sickness but have a faster response to treatment. Proper preconditioning means reduced death loss as well as reduced medicine cost. Consult with your herd veterinarian to develop a protocol that fits your specific cattle operation…there is no one-size-fits-all! Implementing an effective and economical herd health program is the key to profitable preconditioning.
