Continuously we are asked, why South Devon, why not put your efforts towards a more established breed? This question is answered by our motto, “Do not follow where the path leads, rather go where there is no path and leave a trail.” It’s rather simple to us really, being different is a benefit. It allows us to raise a breed of cattle that can be the glue to other composites. Research shows that a three breed cross provides the maximum amount of direct heterosis. Composites with South Devon can bridge the gap between Continental and English breeds. Our program strives to produce the most profitable genetics for our customers bottom line. This can only be done by trusting science and using it in all of our decisions. We are proud of how we’ve followed this principle with whole herd reporting, phenotype data collection on every animal born, strict AI regimes, ultrasound data and nontraditional trait collection being practices we have continued to build upon. Sale Information Terms and Conditions Terms of the sale are cash or check payable at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. No cattle will leave without earnest money equaling 25% of total purchase. Delivery Delivery is free of charge if you purchase 3 or more animals, or the total purchase exceeds $5000. Deliveries greater than 400 miles from our location will be prioritized by volume of the order and necessity. If you take your purchase/purchases home within a week of sale date you will receive $100 off your total bill. No animals will be released until the conclusion of the sale. Registration and Transfer All cattle sell with registration certificates. When making settlement, please leave specific instructions for transfer. Liability Everyone attending the sale does so at their own risk. DLCC assumes no liability for any accidents, illness or property loss. Herd Health We take the needed steps to sell cattle according to the State of Minnesota animal health regulations. All cattle are tested for Johnes and BVD. Females are vaccinated for Brucellosis and all bulls sell with a breeding soundness exam certificate. Out-Of-State health papers will be provided and arranged upon delivery. Announcements Announcements made on sale day will supersede any information contained in the catalog. In the case of inclement weather, we will make announcements at www. DLCCRanch.com and on our Facebook page. EPD’s Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s) are provided by the North American South Devon Association. EPD’s are calculated as parental averages. Unfortuantely, at the time of catalog printing, IGS calculated EPD’s are not yet available. Guarantee All bulls are guaranteed for the first breeding season. All bulls additionally have a 3-year guarantee on feet and legs starting on the date of purchase. The first breeding season is defined as 90 days from the first turnout of the bull. A replacement bull at equal or lesser value will be provided if available. If a bull is replaced at an agreed lesser value a sale credit of the difference will be issued for the next sale. If a bull cannot be replaced, a sale credit will be issued of the same value as purchased for the next sale. If a bull is injured within a year of purchase, a sale credit will be issued minus 25% of purchased value. Please notify us of any injury as soon as possible and prior to the bull being sold for salvage.

Discounts A purchase of 5 or more bulls will receive a volume discount of 5% off the total bill. Any cattle taken home within a week of the sale will receive $100 off total bill. Need semen? Bring your tank and receive 15% off a semen purchase. Absentee Bids Absentee bids may be placed by phone and mail. Contact our sale day phones before or on sale day to place an absentee bid. Semen Interest DLCC retains 1/3 semen interest and revenue sharing in all bulls in the offering. Should a bull start accumulating large semen sales, DLCC protects our rights to 1/3 of the semen sale revenue. You will own full possession and salvage value of the bull. We will retain our 1/3 interest if the bull is sold to a third party. If DLCC wishes to gather semen on the bull during his lifetime, we may do so at our expense and the buyers convenience. Cattle Care & Development DLCC will continue to house and feed bulls & females offered in our auction until May 30th free of charge. After May 30th, we charge $1.00 per day until possession has been transferred.

Precision Tools for Beef Cattle Production By: Lane Giess
W
hat are Expected Progeny Difference’s (EPDs) in beef cattle production? This is a question I am often asked and one which takes some time to fully answer. Though I can’t remember a time where we didn’t have EPDs on our cattle, the technology is relatively new. Simply, EPDs leverage lots of data to understand the genetic merit of an individual animal using basic probabilities and statistics. Now, the models that predict these EPDs are anything but simple, and to try and explain that here would require more pages than this entire catalog. This however, does not mean EPDs are an ineffective tool, quite the contrary actually. EPDs are the most effective metric at gaging genetic merit that exists in this industry today - let’s call them a precision tool. We use precision tools every day in our life, and we trust them to work. If someone asked me to explain how a combine works I would have no idea where to start, but I trust it is the most effective way to harvest grain. If someone asked me how my computer worked, again, I would have no idea where I would begin to explain, but I trust it is the most effective way for me to perform complex functions and communications around the world. Though these are complex technologies, the functions and products remain simple if you trust what they can do. Like every other technology, EPDs are advancing every day. This is done by maximizing the performance and speed of our computers, improving the effectiveness of our models, contributing larger amounts of quality data and adding new traits to prediction. EPDs are the only precision tool we need besides our eye when purchasing a new herd bull or replacement female. In essence, we do not care what that animal is, but rather what it can produce.
In beef cattle production two things influence how an animal performs and appears; genetics and management. Management is influenced from a wide assortment of directions so if we wanted to understand why a calf had an 80-pound birth weight only a portion of that phenotype is explained by genetics and the rest could be explained by; • • • • • • •
Weather Nutrition Age of the Dam Sex Gestation Length Temperature Etc.
Often, I see printed in sale catalogs or hear auctioneers promote actual or adjusted weights, ratios even, on bulls as some sort of indicator for genetic merit. And while 30 years ago, these would have been a precision tool for selection. Technology has advanced so much the use of these for selection are completely and utterly outdated. As seedstock breeders, it is our job and responsibility to produce genetics that make our customers profitable. Genetic merit for traits like calving ease, longevity, growth and carcass quality are passed down from parent to progeny and are best measured using EPDs. Tandem selection is done through the use of selection indexes, a metric that combines multiple EPDs and costs into one value. Once the progeny has been conceived it’s up to the producers to manage that animal to capture profitability. Science is not always understood, but it should be trusted. This year we will not be printing adjusted weights or ratios in our catalog. It’s our duty to keep selection simple and the best metric for understanding what a bull or female will pass on to their progeny is through EPDs. Expected Progeny Differences A tool used to gauge the genetic merit of an animal for an economically relevant trait of beef production. It’s important to note the EPD’s printed in this catalog are extremely limited. International Genetic Solutions Multi-breed EPD’s are not yet available at the time of printing this catalog. EPD’s printed in this catalog are parental averages from the last BreedPlan evaluation - Spring 2019.

DLCC Star Index
election Index: When selection is applied to the improvement of economic value in animals for multiple traits. Simply, this means we are using a balanced approach for our selection decisions, focusing on tandem improvement for a whole host of traits such as calving ease, longevity, growth or carcass quality. We know that through sound use of appropriate selection indexes is the only way to rapidly improve profitability in a cowherd. For a couple of years we have recognized the $Profit index as a metric for selecting for multiple economically relevant traits. This year we had hoped IGS multi-breed EPD’s and Indexes would be available for our customers.
International Genetic Solutions is the world’s largest beef cattle genetic evaluation and is the most robust at calculating multi-breed EPD’s. This however will not be the case at the time of printing this catalog. This is an unfortunate step back before we make a giant leap next year. We decided a temporary and alternative metric is the DLCC Star Index. We’re keeping it simple by using a star system to help rank the bulls. The index is based off of a combination of EPD’s, Pedigree awareness and eye-appeal. 5-Star bulls are the ones that put it all together. We hope you trust our program and this rudimentary tool while we await a quantum leap in genetic awareness next year.

Lot 1 We are so excited about these Debut 88D calves we had to start the sale with them. Sound, good footed, and balanced trait leaders. The lead-off bull in this year’s sale debut’s with an awesome phenotype. His EPD profile is balanced across the board and comes from one of our most prestigious cow families.
