Fall 2019 ▪ 1
The President’s Pen County fair season has come and gone, and the fall harvest will be soon be upon us. Fall is on its way. As much as things change, many things stay the same. We live in an era that requires flexibility especially with news (at the time of writing this) that the packing house in Holcomb was damaged by a devastating fire. With the impending hit to the feeder calf market it means that everyone is going to have to get creative and figure out how to add the extra value to their calf crop. That’s what we do in agriculture that’s what we in this industry have done for hundreds of years. Thru the best and worst of times. Stay strong everyone cinch up your belt and put your thinking caps on its going to be a wild ride. On a lighter note, I want to congratulate KJAA member Ethan Dickerson on being named a finalist for a National FFA Proficiency Award. Ethan we are proud of you and knock the judges socks off in that interview later this fall! As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to give me a call at 913680-4414.

Notes & News from Anne Mountains to Climb As the long hot days of summer give way to the cool mornings it seams we may have mountains to climb this fall. In spring and summer we have encountered new indexes and EPD’s, unpredictable weather, low grain prices and a downturn in the cattle market. It all leaves many asking how do we climb that mountain. I don’t have the answers but I do have something that we all have in common– the Angus cow and she has brought us over many mountains before. Great things are done when men and mountains meet. __William Blake

Kansas Junior Angus Association Hello Everyone! As the Summer comes to a close and school starts up again, I want to wish everyone well. The KJAA was extremely well represented at the National Junior Angus Show in Louisville, KY this year, each of our juniors deserve a big congratulations for placing third in Sweepstakes. A well earned thank you should be given to our advisors for putting in the time and work to make Junior Nationals such a success. Start thinking and preparing for the Kansas Angus Futurity in January. Even though it is a long way off, it takes the entire officer team putting in time and effort to make the Futurity a success. I want to wish everyone good luck at the Kansas State Fair this year as well!

LEAD Scholarships Alexandria Cozzitorto, Olathe and Eva Hinrichsen, Westmoreland received the Kansas Angus Association’s first-ever NJAA Leaders Engaged In Angus Development Conference Scholarships. Each received a $250 award to cover registration fees for the 2019 conference. The scholarships were made possible through the Kansas Endowment in the Angus Foundation. Clint Woodrow, KAA treasurer presented the awards.
Sharing and Learning Kansas Junior Angus Association alumni came together at the Preview Show to share their time, knowledge and appreciation of the junior Angus program with current KJAA members for a showmanship clinic and fitting demonstration. The afternoon was a fun learning experience for all with plenty of interaction and prizes. The afternoon event started off with a hands-on showmanship clinic. Preview Show exhibitors brought their own cattle to the ring and each was paired with an alumni or older KJAA member. The pairs spent about an hour on one-on–one coaching in a show scenario. Grady Dickerson served as the showmanship clinic announcer. Following the showmanship session, exhibitors and parents were invited to bring a chair to watch KJAA alumni Clayton Lampe and Josh Laflin clip and fit a steer. Both Clayton and Josh explained each step as well as their experiences while interreacting with the participants by frequently asking and answering questions. Several prizes were given out to those asking and answering questions.
KJAA alumni Clayton Lampe and Josh Laflin clipped and fit a steer taking turns explaining and demonstrating each part while asking and answering questions
Alumni Chris and Sharee Sankey organized the event and Chris served as the afternoon’s commentator while giving out prizes donated by Sullivan Supply, Stock Show U, Valley Vet Supply and Bluestem Farm and Ranch. Chris asked KJAA history and trivia questions with those answering winning prizes. The final portion of the clinic was conducted by alumni that enjoyed recent success in the National Junior Angus Showmanship contest. Allison Manchester, Reid Shipman, Anna Carpenter, Cale Hinrichsen and Madison Loschke shared their experiences the dos and don’ts’ of showring attire, equipment, procedure and etiquette.
Cody Theis and Emily McCurry Mullen were just two of the many KJAA alumni that worked one -on-one with junior in the hands-on showmanship clinic. “ We are thankful for many talented and successful KJAA alumni that are willing to give back to the KJAA and guide the members in their continued success. We have many new members that want guidance and are eager to learn. We were happy to organize the clinic and thank all of the alumni and older members that came together to share their time and talent. We hope to continue events like this.” Chris & Sharee Sankey

Kansas Angus Auxiliary It has been a long summer for a lot of us, but one of my favorite season’s is upon us. Cattle are being gathered to come home to their winter pastures and fall calving is just around the corner. Juniors are headed back to the classrooms, with some starting in new places on a college campus. Wishing all the Juniors luck as they begin a new chapter and settle into a new schedule. I think it is amazing these kids have the opportunity to be involved in such a great organization that makes it possible to have access to local, state and national level scholarships. Kansas juniors haven’t only excelled in the showring, but they have always had prominent representation as Auxiliary Scholarship recipients. With that being said, congratulations to all the juniors who traveled to Louisville representing Kansas! We have an amazing group of juniors that I am proud to have as representation in and out of the showring! Best of luck to everyone as they are going through their county fair season and heading onto Kansas State Fair and the KJLS! Wendy Flory President, Kansas Angus Auxiliary maywayfarms@gmail.com

much a mother as their own. June's husband, the late George Crenshaw, was known widely for promoting Angus cattle in Kansas, and she was a vigorous partner in the enterprise. Their farm house, in western Wabaunsee County, was central to the ranch that was a home away from home for dozens of neighbors, scores of family and countless friends who found their way to a cup of coffee, a glass of tea, something to eat, and a good, long visit. George and June were both from large families and for many years reunions there were a favorite, and drew hundreds of relatives from as far away as Wisconsin, Idaho, Oregon. They could stay for days, in area motels or camped on a nearby hill in RVs. Mrs. Crenshaw was born Luella June (Hunt) to Thomas Hunt & Nellie (Ratliff) Hunt on the family farm seven miles southwest of Attica, on November 10, 1925. She attended Camp Creek, a one-room elementary school one-half mile east of her home and graduated from Attica High School in 1943. June then attended Northwestern State University in Alva, OK. She returned to Harper County to teach for several years. June met George Crenshaw in Attica, after a romantic courtship, they were married on February 7, 1945 at the Hunt farm. In the early years of their marriage, June and George farmed in Harper County, worked at Kansas State University where George was Beef Herdsman, and later moved to Olathe in Johnson County, where George was herdsman at the Blackpost Ranch.
In 1956, the Crenshaws moved to their own land east of Manhattan and south of the village of Wabaunsee, and called it Shamrock Farms.
