KS Delegates for the 137th Annual Convention of Delegates of the American Angus Association The Kansas members listed below have been elected delegates and alternates to the 2020 Annual Convention of Delegates of the American Angus Association, to be held Monday, Nov. 9 in Kansas City. Chris Sankey will serve as the Kansas delegation chairman. The President's Pen Dear Fellow Angus Enthusiasts, As the smell of fall is in the air this morning I sit here and write you all hoping that this finds everyone safe and healthy!! It’s the time of year that we can start to see the fruits of our labors in the value of the spring calves that we are about to wean and the fall cows that are knocking on the door of starting the process all over again. We have been crazy busy here at home in the hay field as well as tending to the kid’s projects in our first year of expanding into other species. For those that were not able to attend the Preview Show in June the kids had a great attendance and entries were strong! I think at that point everyone was ready to enjoy a family activity away from home and see how the heifers stacked up in competition. I want to congratulate the outgoing juniors on a fantastic career, we appreciate your leadership and look forward to you being a part of our adult association. Our juniors are extremely competitive on a national basis and very well respected! Grady has done an amazing job representing KS juniors in the capacity of the NJAA board and has retired and following in his footsteps is Alex and we know she will continue the legacy of leaders from KS juniors as a “Green Coat!”

Notes & News from Anne Every Sunset promises new Sunrise Many days sunset is my favorite time of day, looking west from my patio, porch or pasture I have an unobstructed view for miles. Every sunset is a little different - the colors, the clouds and how the sun slides down brings me peace and joy. During the past several months of “covid social distancing” I really became aware of how much I love living where I do and the lifestyle I live. I know many of you , as am I are over not being able to go about or daily lives and business without the restrictions that were so abruptly put on us all a few months ago. While I’m waiting for normal I’ll keep watching the sunset and the promise of a new day each brings. Until next time,

2020 Angus Convention Simplified to 137th Annual Meeting Annual event modified to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions in Kansas City The American Angus Association® has made the difficult decision to reformat the 2020 Angus Convention originally scheduled for Nov. 7-9 in Kansas City, Missouri. Considering the current gathering restrictions created by COVID-19, modifications were necessary to balance the health of attendees and the need to conduct the business of the Association. The event will be a two-day meeting on Nov. 8-9 and will continue the long tradition of holding an annual meeting of delegates that has occurred since the inception of the Association in 1883. The National Angus Tour and trade show portion of the event have been canceled and the number of educational sessions will be reduced but virtual options for members and attendees will be offered. “The health and safety of Association members, guests and staff remains our top priority,” said Mark McCully, Association CEO. “While no technology can replace the value of an in-person gathering, we believe offering virtual attendance options this year is the responsible thing to do. We plan to offer a modified format, allowing for both an in-person annual meeting and a virtual educational experience for those who would like to join from home.” Socially distanced educational sessions, an awards dinner and fundraiser will be hosted on Sunday, Nov. 8. Guests who register online can partake in the virtual educational sessions held throughout the two-day event. Association leadership will provide several updates and educational workshops. Each day will be headlined with keynote speakers to inspire attendees to advance their operation. The American Angus Association Board of Directors candidate forum and state caucuses will proceed as scheduled and will be webcast for those not in attendance. The 137th Convention of Delegates will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 9. If members are unable to attend in person, they can attend virtually, and voting delegates will have a virtual participation option. “The decision to modify the event and the business meeting was not taken lightly,” McCully said. “We still look forward to seeing our members in Kansas City, and if not, we hope you join us online. Give the office a call if you have any questions regarding your registration.” The Association knows its membership is resilient, and the COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all in different ways. Offering a modified format for this industry-leading event aligns with our heritage of innovation and progress, and the Association thanks its membership for cooperating during these trying times. Angus Foundation Grants Record Scholarships, Awards Angus youth received $230,000 in scholarships and LEAD awards at 2020 NJAS. As higher education costs continue to rise, the Angus Foundation continues to raise the bar on its investment in the next generation. Year after year, they step forward to encourage our Angus youth in their studies as well as in leadership and career development programs and cutting-edge research to advance the breed.” A five-member committee consisting of industry experts, Foundation board members, Angus breeders and National Junior Angus Association board members evaluate the applications. The committee considers involvement, participation, leadership, service, career goals and other criteria set forth in the scholarships’ fund agreements. Since 1998, the Angus Foundation has awarded more than $3.1 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Kansas Junior Angus Association KJAA Members, My name is Cale Hinrichsen and I am honored to serve as your 2020– 21 Kansas Junior Angus Association President. I grew up in Westmoreland, Kansas, and am a fourth-generation Angus breeder who appreciates being involved with the Kansas Junior Angus Association first serving as a district director and then holding subsequent offices to the position of president. I have enjoyed all of the friends I have made and the opportunities this association has allowed me to experience. I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel to all four corners of the United States showing Angus Cattle. In addition to showing Angus Cattle, I served as the 2018-2019 American Angus Ambassador. Through this position, I was able to travel to numerous conferences and events to network with individuals from all walks of life about with a common interest in Angus cattle. I am currently a senior at Oklahoma State University where I am majoring in Agribusiness with a minor in marketing. I also am a part of the 2020 Livestock Judging Team here at OSU. Through my time here at Oklahoma State, I have been a member of the Block and Bridle Club, Collegiate Cattlemen’s Association, Collegiate Farm Bureau, and for the past year served as the Events Executive for the Student Alumni Board. Upon graduation, I plan to attend law school with a focus on agricultural law. I will continue to be involved with the livestock industry for the rest of my life. I look forward to this year,

Kansas Junior Angus Preview Show The KJAA hosted their annual preview show on June 6-7 2020 in Hutchinson with a modified schedule of events due to Covid 19 gathering restrictions. The event included the KJAA annual meeting, a junior show and serval competitions as well as meetings of the Kansas Angus Association board of directors and the Kansas Angus Auxiliary. In the show, judge Ryan Sweeney, Stillwater, Oklahoma evaluated ninety-seven entries before selecting an entry owned by Jayce Dickerson , Paradise to receive the coveted Bob Laflin Memorial buckle by winning the supreme champion of the show with his owned heifer Silveiras Sandy 9326 a March 2019 daughter of Colburn Primo . Jayce Dickerson , Paradise received the coveted Bob Laflin Memorial buckle by winning the Supreme Laura Carpenter, and Channing Schneider both of Wamego received Champion of the show with his owned heifer Silveiras Sandy 9326 a March 2019 daughter of Colburn top showmanship honors and won the honor of representing Kansas Primo. Jayce was also named the showâ€™s Premier Jr. Breeder. in the National Junior Angus Show showmanship contest in Tulsa, Ok. The KJAA elected Cale Hinrichsen, Westmoreland to lead the organization as their 2020-21 president. The Kansas Angus Auxiliary awarded Kady Figge, Onaga and Baylee Wulfkuhle, Berryton each a $1500 scholarship. The Auxiliary also announced their annual Premier Exhibitor and Challenge Award winners. Eva Hinrichsen, Westmoreland won the Premier Exhibitor Award which is based on points accumulated in showring competition during the past year; Clay Pelton, Paradise claimed the Challenge Award for his involvement in educational contests and leadership in the past year. The Kansas Angus Association presented Angus Foundation Leaders Engaged in Angus Development conference registration fee stipends to Clay Pelton and Kelsey Theis, Leavenworth. The Cecil McCurry Keep Smiling LEAD Award was presented by the McCurry family to Jayce Dickerson.

Our Angus Family

Henry Morgan, age 92, of Greeley, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2020, at Parkview Heights in Garnett Kansas. Henry J. Morgan was born March 23, 1928 on a farm near Garnett, Kansas. He was the son of Rudolph and Freda (Lickteig) Morgan. He lived by Garnett until 1939 when his family moved to a farm northwest of Greeley, Kansas. He graduated from St. John the Baptist Grade School in 1942 and from Greeley High School in 1946. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church. He joined the 3rd degree of the Knights of Columbus Council 1901 in 1946. He joined the 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus in 1961. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 70 years. He has also been on the parish council and St John’s School Board. Henry started his Angus herd in 1945 when he bought two heifers. He was actively engaged in the Angus business until 2009. He is a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, the Kansas Angus Association and life member of the American Angus Association. Henry was a civic minded man serving 16 years on the School of Greeley Joint 6, and the USD #365 School Board, he also served on the Greeley and Anderson County Co-ops, Soil Conservation District, Federal Land Bank (Frontier Farm Credit), and the Anderson County Fair Board. He was also a very successful Pioneer Seed Dealer for over 35 years, serving east central Kansas. On September 2, 1950, Henry married Mary E. (Young) Morgan at St. Columban Church, Chillicothe, Missouri. This union was blessed with eight children.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; one sister, Mary Ann Egidy; one brother, Eugene Morgan; one son, Thomas Morgan; one granddaughter, Sara; and one great granddaughter, Natalie. He is survived by three sons, Tim Morgan of Greeley, Kansas, Jim Morgan and wife Becky of Louisburg, Kansas, and Dan Morgan of Liberal, Kansas; four daughters, Peg Hiles of Overland Park, Kansas, Sue Short and husband David of Midlothian Texas, Ann Beck and husband Eric of Twin Falls, Idaho and Jan Owen and husband Jeff of San Antonio, Texas; 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Kansas Angus Auxiliary What a crazy year this has been thus far! I don’t know about you, but I am so thankful that my family and I can be on the farm day to day. It is one of my favorite times of the year! Cattle are being moved home from their summer pastures with calving season just around the corner.

Congratulations to all Kansas Juniors who participated at the 2020 National Junior Angus Show in Oklahoma! It was a blessing that the show was able to be moved to Oklahoma from Pennsylvania. 2020 National Junior Angus Show Balances Youth Experience with Safety COVID-19 guidelines allow the 2020 National Junior Angus Show to continue. In a year when nothing has been normal, the National Junior Angus Show was as normal as it can be. The American Angus Association® and the National Junior Angus Association are hosted more than 650 exhibitors in a modified version of the annual event. The show was moved from Pennsylvania to Tulsa, Oklahoma when COVID-19 guidelines for Pennsylvania made it clear NJAS could not be held in that state. “This year has been anything but normal, but we did our best to carry out the NJAS everyone knows and loves,” said Jaclyn Upperman, American Angus Association director of events and education. NJAS typically brings exhibitors from across United States for a weeklong event. This year, 37 states were represented in the shortened and socially distant event. Throughout the planning stages, the Association prioritized the safety of exhibitors and their families with an extensive COVID-19 Response Plan. Exhibitors moved throughout a series of staging areas as they arrived on the Tulsa State Fairgrounds to ensure that they never had to leave their trucks to check in. Some contests were canceled, and others were modified. In addition, the arrival and departure schedule were made flexible to allow for fewer people in the barn throughout the week. Opening and closing ceremonies were held virtually to allow for people to watch from wherever they are – in the barn or in a different state. The response from exhibitors was positive, Upperman said. “While this year doesn’t look like the NJAS we’ve held before, we are happy that we were able to get our Angus Family together.” More than 1,400 head of cattle were entered this year, along with many entries in the virtual contests. “It was a great week with great young cattlemen and women,” said Mark McCully, American Angus Association CEO. “The week represents a year of hard work for these young people and we couldn’t be happier to be able to give them a stage to shine.”

Hager Awarded the 2020 NJAA Advisor of the Year

Hard Work Pays Off for Junior Angus Herdsman

Past Kansas Junior Angus Advisor is recognized for his dedication to Angus youth. Often it is not what people say or do that is remembered; rather it is the way they make a person feel. This is the case for the late Nelson Hager. Before passing last April, he spent his time as an advisor to the Kansas Junior Angus Association (KJAA). Hager’s junior Angus members were more than just members to him; they were “Nelson’s kids.” It is clear Hager will forever be remembered for his dedication to youth and to the KJAA, and it is his longstanding support that has earned him the Advisor of the Year honor at the 2020 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS).

Hinrichsen of Kansas is recognized as the 2020 Junior Herdsman of the Year. The Junior Herdsman of the Year Award is devoted to the recognition of a National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) member in their last year of eligibility who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and character, both in and out of the show ring. Each year, an exhibitor who exemplifies a strong work ethic, commitment to the breed and outstanding preparation of their cattle is chosen by their peers at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS).

Nelson Hager was a cheerleader for Angus youth. Hager’s rare soul would do almost anything if he knew it would make someone happy or help them learn. He always took time out of his day to make someone else’s day brighter. His thoughtful and selfless demeanor was a clear indicator of his passion for the youth of the industry. “This year Nelson Hager is being recognized as the 2020 Advisor of the Year,” said Grady Dickerson, National Junior Angus Board leadership director. “But for Kansas, my family and me, he was much more than a great advisor. He was a friend a mentor, a great dad and we all miss him dearly.” A champion of young people who excel in the Angus business, Nelson grew up showing in the Kansas Junior Angus Association, FFA and 4-H. He was an active participant in the National Junior Angus Show for many years. After his show career as an Angus junior ended, Nelson continued to be active in junior activities by mentoring many kids with a drive and passion for Angus. He instilled a sense of self-confidence, self-worth, and perseverance in many.

Cale Hinrichsen, a fourth-generation Angus breeder of Westmoreland, Kansas, is the recipient of the 2020 Junior Herdsman of the Year Award. He is a senior at Oklahoma State University, where he majors in Agribusiness with a minor in Marketing. Hinrichsen plans to attend law school to pursue a career in Ag Law and also intends to continue being involved with the Angus breed. His connection to the breed has been evident since the day he was born, when his aunt purchased a junior lifetime membership to the American Angus Association® in his name. “This breed has given me so much,” said Hinrichsen. “It’s shaped so much about me; I don’t see myself ever walking away from it.” He intends to continue giving back to the breed and hopes to serve as a mentor for young people the same way countless others have for him.

“When new families would join the Kansas Junior Angus Association, Hager would be the first to welcome them in and make them feel at home,” said Anne Lampe, Kansas Angus Association manager, “Nelson had one of those larger--than-life personalities, and he was absolutely the biggest cheerleader.”

Hinrichsen explains this award illustrates the impact he’s been able to have on his fellow juniors, pointing out this is an honor one doesn’t apply for. He feels fortunate for the network he’s built and the lessons he’s learned during his time as an NJAA member. From exhibiting at shows across the nation and participating in contests and conferences, to even serving as the 2018 American Angus Ambassador, HinThe members of the Angus family who knew Nelson well do not remember a Narichsen has truly defined what it means to be involved and how to make the most tional Junior Angus Show that he was not in attendance. When you do have success, it’s important to maintain that humilitremendous contributions of the Junior Angus Association advisors. National Junior Angus Board Announces New Members

Alexandria Cozzitorto, Olathe, Kansas among 6 elected In a year of uncertainty, one thing remained consistent at the 2020 National Junior Angus Show – the election of high-quality individuals to lead the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA). Every summer, NJAA members elect six young adults to serve on the National Junior Angus Board (NJAB). The members selected are recognizable by their green coats at livestock shows and youth events throughout the country. The new team members were announced during the virtual closing ceremonies on Sunday, July 26. The National Junior Angus Board members serve two-year terms; the first year on the board of directors and the second as officers in the Association. During their tenure, they travel to shows and conferences, plan and execute educational events for fellow young cattlemen and women, promote the Angus breed and help juniors succeed in the classroom, show ring and various educational contests held by the Association. Selected by NJAB advisors after a thorough interview and application process, Chairman Nicholas Pohlman of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, and Vice-Chairman Daniel Rohrbaugh of Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, will lead the new National Junior Angus Board team. The team is completed by Communications Director Kelsey Vejraska, Omak, Washington; Angus Foundation Director Megan Pelan, Jefferson, Maryland; Leadership Director Justin Wood, Willow Spring, North Carolina; and Membership Director Regan Skow, Palisade, Nebraska. The second-year team will move into their new officer roles and strengthen their leadership skills along the way. “Watching the next generation of cattlemen and women succeed is why we do what we do,” said Jaclyn Upperman, American Angus Association director of events and education. “Our team helps guide them in their endeavors, but we learn from them just as much. I’m excited to watch these young leaders become even stronger advocates for our breed and the cattle industry as a whole.” The newest six members of the NJAB are eager to bring their ideas to life and create opportunities for the members they serve. The new board joining the officers are Alex Cozzitorto, Olathe, Kansas; Josh Jasper, Nicholasville, Kentucky; Walker McDermott, Wiota, Iowa; Cutter Pohlman, Hereford, Texas; Eric Schafer, Owaneco, Illinois and Garrett Schuering, Thompson, Missouri. Alex Cozzitorto is no stranger to the Angus breed. As an involved member of the Kansas Junior Angus Association and a third-generation Angus breeder, Cozzitorto has held multiple leadership positions and has served as the Kansas Angus Princess. As an incoming sophomore at Texas A&M University, Cozzitorto is studying animal science with plans to pursue a law degree, specializing in agriculture law and policy. Her mission is to represent and protect the agricultural industry in her future career. “It’s an absolute honor and privilege to have the opportunity to give back to the juniors in the same way that I was given my entire junior career,” Cozzitorto said. “This is a dream come true for me and my family.”
