All printed EPDs in this catalog are the current 2020 EPDs as of Feb. 28, 2020. All of the bulls have genomic profiles which are incorporated in their updated EPDs available in this catalog. Any updates or corrections will be available sale day or prior to the sale on the website.

All persons attending this sale do so at their own risk, and the owner and his agents assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.

A & B Cattle will deliver bulls anywhere in the continental United States free of charge. Adam Sawyer will make delivery arrangements and will assist with the care of the bulls prior to delivery.

Herd Health:

Lot numbers on the bulls correspond with the numbers in the catalog. The bulls will be tagged with a USDA metal clip tag which is an official tag for all states that can be used for all regulatory programs such as interstate commerce, disease control programs, etc. Most bulls will also carry their original herd tags.

Free Delivery:

The bulls have been vaccinated with Vista One and Vision 7 Somnus at branding and weaning and have been poured with Vetrimec and Permectrin CDS. The bulls are ready for interstate shipment.

Accommodations:

All bulls will be officially semen tested by Dr. Chris Finney of the Ainsworth Veterinary Clinic. This test includes semen analysis for vigor, concentrations, morphology and percentage live as well as an examination for physical defects such as abnormal testicles and warts. Scrotal circumferences were taken at this time. Any unsatisfactory bulls are eliminated from the sale offering. Scrotal measurements available sale day or at www.abcattle.com.

These cattle sell under the suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association which briefly state: Terms of the sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The auctioneer will settle all disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. Each animal will be at purchaser’s risk as soon as sold.

Sawyer Family devoted to Angus Cattle for

Elizabeth & Howard Sawyer

In 1917, Howard Washington Sawyer age 26, took over the family farm from his father (Richard Cyrus Sawyer) and brother (Clyde). Richard Cyrus Sawyer and his wife Lida Jane (Young) had filed their homestead near Howard, South Dakota in October 1887. When Howard took over the farm, it was producing good crops of corn and oats so he decided to buy a few grade Angus cows to add to the few pigs and milk cows they already had on the farm. The first Angus calf he raised was a bull that weighed over 1,000 pounds at a year of age. He was so impressed by the productivity of these Angus cows, he joined the American Angus Association on Dec. 24, 1919 and purchased his first registered Angus in 1920 in DeSmet, SD. The sale was sponsored by John Smith of Erwin, SD. Registered cattle were a rarity then, and Howard had to pay as much as $200 for some of the cows, when average grade cows were selling for $50 and weaned calves topped the market at $25. Howard Washington Sawyer was a progressive farmer and cattle breeder and knew that to raise good cattle he had to buy good seed stock. He paid $1,000 for his first purebred bull, named “Enlate”. The first predominant bloodlines of the herd were Marshall breeding. By 1930 “Sawyer’s Angus Farm” was a well-known name in cattle breeder circles. Richard James Sawyer was born in 1914 and by age 14 was showing Angus cattle at the 1928 South Dakota State Fair. Richard won the coveted beef showmanship honors in the 4-H show at that 1928 state fair. Only four years later he was on the road showing

cattle in many major shows across the continental United States. During the 1930’s Richard would be away up to six months out of a year showing cattle and traveling by railroad to such places as Denver, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City and Chicago. It was during that time that South Dakota suffered greatly from drought, grasshoppers and low farm prices. The dust storms whipped up from areas where several years of above-normal rainfall had encouraged farmers to plow under much of the native buffalo grass. Cash farm income fell to one-third of its former level. In 1933 one farm out of every 10 in the state was taken from its owner through foreclosure or tax sale. The depression times were hard for the Sawyers, and they sold down much of the livestock. The earnings Richard made from showing cattle supplemented the farm income. There were very few expenses for Richard other than rail travel. During that time, his sisters, Irene, Lorene, and Betty helped out at home while Richard was away showing cattle. During the 1940’s the Sawyers thrived on their good Angus cattle, which were winning major shows. In 1941 Richard showed the Grand Champion Bull, Heifer, and Steer in Portland and had several other major winnings along the Pacific coast. Two years later they exhibited the Reserve Champion Heifer at the National Western in Denver. They also exhibited a first place bull at the International in Chicago during those years. In the late 1950’s Angus breeders from five states were instrumental in sending 11 heifers and one bull to Italy as seed stock to fulfill the wishes of the late Pope Pius XII. The herd was donated to start a breeding program asked for by the late pontiff to provide offspring that could be given to poor farmers in southern Europe. H.W. Sawyer & Son donated a heifer to the pontiff’s herd. The Angus cattle were trucked to New York City where they boarded a transport plane for Rome. Richard James also carried on the tradition started by Howard Washington of raising quality Angus cattle. The Sawyer family was one of the few in the state of South Dakota to exhibit cattle at the South Dakota State fair for 50 years in a row. The trophy case in the Sawyer home was filled with trophies won from showing their Angus cattle over the years. Richard James 46

married Dorothy (Cherrey) on December 29, 1949. They had five children Darrell, Arlen, Merlin, Connie and Darla. While the children grew up on the farm near Howard, SD they showed many Angus cattle and actively helped on the farm. The 4-H program was important to the Sawyer family, that’s where Arlen got his start showing Angus cattle at the Miner County fair in Howard, S.D. The Sawyer kids attended and showed at the very first South Dakota Junior Angus show. Of these children, Arlen pursued a life-time passion of raising registered Angus cattle. In college at South Dakota State University, he met Becky (Schumacher) who came from an Angus family in Iowa. They were married June 7, 1975 and with the help of a loan from Dorothy Sawyer, they bought their first heifers that fall. After working for two purebred Angus operations, Arlen and Becky established their A & B Cattle operation in 1990 near Bassett, Nebr. One of their foundation females in the

A & B herd was a cow raised at the home place in South Dakota. Arlen and Becky also ran cows in partnership with Arlen’s mother Dorothy after Richard’s passing in 1990 until her passing in 1995, and then with older brother Darrell for a few more years. Arlen and Becky had two children, Jessica and Adam. Both showed in 4-H at county, district and the Nebraska State Fair show and were active members of Nebraska and National Jr. Angus programs. As they grew up on the ranch near Bassett, they

100 Years and Five Generations were involved with the day-to-day duties of raising registered Angus cattle, striving to mimic their commercial cattle neighbors. As a freshman in high school, Jessica earned beef breeding showmanship honors at Ak-Sar-Ben. She served as president of the Nebraska Jr. Angus association and was also elected to the National Jr. Angus association board of directors. She exhibited numerous champions over the years and won the coveted Premier Breeder award at the 1998 National Heifer Show along with the high point girl Silver Pitcher Award. She won the National Jr. Angus showmanship contest in 2000 at the National Jr. Angus heifer show, receiving the first Jake White belt buckle. During these years one of her foundation females was the dam of the Show Bull of the Year, A & B Yukon 7150. Jessica also won the inaugural Dick Spader extemporaneous speaking award and was also on several winning beef cookoffs and salesmanship teams. of a Sawyer’s Angus Farm female. At a very young age, Adam borrowed money to buy two registered Angus females. Those females along with his founding seed stock heifer given to him by his parents, helped provide the foundation for his herd. Adam also showed in 4-H and at the Nebraska and National Junior Angus shows. He also participated on several Angus Quiz Bowl, team sales, and beef cookoff teams. Adam grew up learning the ranching aspect of raising registered Angus cattle, learning many lessons from his dad who was a graduate of the Sandhills ranching “school of hard knocks”! Adam pursued a degree in Ag Economics at Texas

Tech and worked in banking institutions for about eight years before returning full time to the ranch to work side by side with his dad in 2019. Over the years, Arlen judged numerous regional and national livestock events. One of his most memorable judging experiences was at the 1995 South Dakota Angus Association’s state show and sale at Watertown, S.D. where the association was celebrating its 50th anniversary and honored the Sawyer family for being one of the founding families of the South Dakota Angus Association. He attended the event with his mother Dorothy. Both Howard and Richard served as presidents of the South Dakota Angus Association during their lifetimes, and Arlen served as president of the Nebraska Angus Association. For many years A & B Cattle continued in the Sawyer tradition of exhibiting cattle at the American Royal, All-American Angus Futurity, Western National Angus Futurity, and the National Western. As a long-time exhibitor in the “yards” in Denver, A & B Cattle exhibited the reserve grand champion pen of bulls in 1992 and 2002. Starting in 2004 A & B Cattle entered pens of five heifers, first heifer calves and later bred heifers, that were featured in the National Western Foundation Female Sale. A & B Cattle was a continuous consignor to that event for 15 years. As the beef industry evolved into a more data driven and genomically advanced breeding programs, A & B began pursuing calving ease, multiple performance and carcass traits with an emphasis on producing Angus cattle that worked for beef producers in the Sandhills. Arlen was very proud of the fact that AI studs purchased herd sires in the annual bull sale over the years, including Select Sires (A & B Spotlite 3065) and Accelerated Genetics (A & B Shooter 3421 and A & B Twenty X 3149). Another bull was leased by ST Genetics (A & B Final Design 2135). Through the years, the Sawyer family relied on private treaty sales or association sponsored show/consignment sales to market their seed stock. Arlen and Becky were instrumental in starting one of the early Angus bull production sales in the Sandhills when they joined the K Plus Angus Ranch and continued later with the Profitmaker Bull program. However, as marketing trends changed over the years, production sales became a more popular means of marketing cattle beginning in the late 1960’s.

Today, all A & B Cattle auctions are held with the aid of internet bidding and live video feeds. A & B Cattle will celebrate its 30th anniversary of hosting annual bull sales in 2020. Arlen and Becky sold 54 bulls in their first bull sale in 1990 and averaged $2705. The sale was held at Bassett Livestock Auction. In 1995 they built their present day sale barn facility. Over the years they have been fortunate to export bulls to Russia and send females to eastern Europe. They have instituted technology that would’ve been foreign ideas to Howard and Richard such as DNA testing, computerized record keeping, embryo transfer, artificial insemination and synchronized breeding, and using EPDs in their selection processes. Fourth generation Adam Sawyer has now taken over management of A & B Cattle since the passing of Arlen in 2019. Adam’s wife Jenessa, along with his sister Jessica and mother Becky, are all active in the operation. They all have the same goal…to continue the 100 year family legacy. Adam hopes to continue raising registered Angus seed stock well into the next century. In 2018, newborn Augustus Sawyer inherited his great-great grandfather Howard Sawyer’s lifetime membership to the American Angus Association with the help of his granddad, Arlen. That same summer, his grandmother Becky, carefully selected a heifer calf for young Augustus to start his herd. His heifer calved this spring with a Spotlite bull calf. The fifth generation Angus legacy begins!

Using the A&B Performance Records Performance records are measures of individual weights and measurements taken at various times in an animal’s life. Key to Abbreviated Terms Used in this Catalog:

($M)aternal - is a new $Value that predicts profitabilty differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

(BW) Actual Birth Weight - the actual weight of a calf measured at birth. (Adj. WW) Adjusted Weaning Weight - the weaning weight of an animal adjusted to a common age of 205 days. Bulls are raised on grass til weaning without creep feed. A weight is taken at pre-conditioning (pre-weaning) time to accurately access the performance of the cow while nursing a calf. Cow are culled based on these weights. About mid-September weaning begins and the bulls are fed a warm-up starter ration until the end of October at which time they are weighed in one contemporary group and weaning weights are taken. From then til yearling time, the bulls are fed a high roughage ration consisting of ground hay and wet distillers by-product to insure an adequate gain of about 3.5 lbs. per day while staying in good, athletic condition.

($W)eaning - provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. $Increased selection pressure on $W increases weaning and maternal milk traits while increasing mature cow size. ($B)eef - the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Often considered an end product indicater the $B value combines the contributions of feedlot and grid values. ($C)ombined - another new $Value that is an index which includes all traits that make up both ($M) Maternal Weaned Calf Value and ($B) Beef Value. EPDs directly ainfluencing the $C are calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, foot angle, claw set, dry matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, rib eye area and fat thickness.

Other pertinent information: ~DNA samples are collected on every calf at pre-conditioning time. All bulls in the sale have been Angus GS or i50K, parentage, and defected tested.

(Adj. Hip) Adjusted Yearling Hip Ht. - a measure in inches taken at the hip at time yearling weights are taken and adjusted to a common age of 365days. This figure can be translated into a frame score. An adjusted hip height of 47.1 = Frame Score 4; 48.8 inches = Frame Score 5; 51.0 inches = Frame Score 6; and 53.0 = Frame Score 7.

~All bulls are freeze branded with their tattoo number at yearling time for permanent identification. ~All bulls have had foot scores recorded and submitted to the American Angus Association.

(ADG) Average Daily Gain - a computation of the average daily gain established by the bulls during the 95 - 110 day feed test (from weaning to yearling weigh dates)
