Welcome! It is our pleasure we invite you to the 2020 “BUILD YOUR HERD” Sale
at Haugestuen Ranches! The beef industry is changing overnight, and we will strive to help our customers keep pace with it, and to provide the genetics and service to help your program be profitable. The Science of Genomics, International Genetic Solutions, Total Herd Reporting, the Feeder Profit Calculator, Economically Relevant Traits, understanding and utilizing Expected Progeny Differences are just some of the new advances, and all are critical to being successful and profitable. Yet, we must not forget to address the daily management components, best use the resources available to us, take advantage of continual learning, and value the relationships so important to the people within our beef industry. As a seedstock producer, we know our success depends upon you, your satisfaction, and the relationship we build with you to create continual satisfaction and trust. Thank you for your friendship and your belief in our genetics! Our program is simple! We believe in the maternal, and it is a conviction! Simply, great cows make great bulls! We have genetics in the back pasture, not grain, and our cows will make their living on converting grass to milk, and milk to pounds, and pounds to profit, and they will pass it on to you. We will let our genetics do the talking, and you can be assured the offspring produced here will perform because they have had to with only mama, grass, and the best stewardship we can provide the land and animals. In continually striving to improve we have taken yet another step forward with all our females being foot scored by the American Simmental Association. This data will once again be used to make informed breeding decisions which will benefit you. Foot scoring follows tissue samples taken from every Sim-Angus female and all Black Angus, Red Angus, and Sim-Angus donors in 2019 which provides us with genomic information within each breed. We will continue to research and use the best data available to improve for you! Please stop in and see the bulls and heifers before sale day! They were raised with great care using a carefully formulated ration of high roughage, low grain, vitamins, minerals, salt, and given plenty of play yard activity to build a “hard active muscle” and a “strong skeletal structure”. We strive to “build an athlete” ready to withstand long hot summer days and the demands of breeding at night. The genetics are uniquely planned and cutting edge, and providing them to you is exciting for us. We will answer your questions and try to match your program needs to specific genetics. Please join the “BUILD YOUR HERD” team Saturday April 4, 2020 for a full day of cattle viewing, informational session on Utilizing EPDs in the Selection Process, smoked brisket meal, and sale. The entire day is outlined in the catalog. Come and enjoy the day! It is our pleasure serving you!

BULL DEVELOPMENT/PERFORMANCE TEST: “BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls are bred, born, and raised right here on the ranch with “no creep” to allow them to exhibit their natural genetic makeup. Just mama’s milk and grass! Bull development begins with great genetics, the influence of the cow and environment while bulls are on pasture, the transition period during weaning, sound management while bulls develop, adequate nutrition for growth, and daily play yard activity. To lessen the importance of one criterion in comparison to another weakens the link between each in creating a herd sire expected to pass on his genetics for years to come. “BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls transitioned into the development center October 24, 2019 and were fed a high fiber nutrient dense ration to express their genetic profile. All bulls were on a 100 day performance test targeting a 3.0 pound average daily gain (ADG). Bulls came off test right at our target and will continue to gain 3.0 pounds ADG till sale day. The bulls have access to a large dirt play yard 24 hours a day which creates a hard-active muscle rather than a soft sedentary muscle. This enhances durability and longevity of your bull. “BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls are developed as athletes prepared to work for you! Haugestuen Ranches takes bull development seriously and your investment is important to us! Developing bulls is not a rate-of gain contest, similar to raising a feedlot steer, and expecting him to breed a herd of cows. Young bulls need to develop into athletes so they can work efficiently. It is already a challenge to withstand long hot summer days, and breeding activity at night. We want your bull to stay sound for many breeding seasons and our development program enhances their physical abilities to do so.

6595 is one of the finest maternal lines in the Black Angus breed. He is a high accuracy bull who sires moderate frame, will maintain flesh during breeding season, and transmits a solid foot to his offspring. His functional maternal traits make him a no miss sire. You will see 6595 in pedigrees throughout the Angus world. Born in 1995, direct progeny of 6595 are rare! Fertility is an added bonus with this planned mating as the 422-donor flushed 73 eggs. An opportunity awaits the astute rancher today with these three sons and a planned mating of some of the best maternal giants of the breed in 6595, 8180, Thunder, and Game Day. “BUILD YOUR HERD”!

With a thickness throughout he is not far behind his flush brother when it comes to performance. The 422 donor is unique in pedigree carrying Thunder, Game Day and Final Answer on her papers. Combining these maternal cow maker families with all that 6595 brings to the pedigree sets breeders up for a win-win in the combination of maternal traits needed to keep replacement females or make feeders with a black hide. We mated the 422 donor A.I. to SAV Final Answer as a trial to determine our next flush to her. The result is impressive and will be part of our future planned E.T. program. This is an individual with a birth weight/date of 76 pounds/April 27, 2019 and a full month behind his herd mates. His body composition is flawless and regardless of his age, he still stands out in the pen of bulls. The only SAV Final Answer in this years “BUILD YOUR HERD” Sale. 10X led the Angus breed in registrations in 2015 and 2016. He is a pathfinder sire with added carcass merit, a 1.00 marbling EPD, and he ranks in the top 10 percent of breed for $W and $B. -Select Sires This is the final bull we have out of our original 416 donor X 10X flush mating. 416 was a 6595 daughter who has many daughters working in our herd, and lived to the ripe age of 14. It’s hard to part with something so good, but we are not able to use him with all her daughters in our herd. When we clipped lot 55 it was obvious, he has a ton of dimension. Combining 10X dollar values with the 6595 maternal traits sets this up as one of the best individuals who will walk a pasture. “BUILD YOUR HERD”

Hard Drive is a cornerstone sire for the Bieber Red Angus program in South Dakota. We used Hard Drive as a new young sire, much against my convictions of only mating highly proven genetics, but my hunch was correct and he is a rock star in the Red Angus breed. We would keep one of his sons, however already have his daughters working in our Red Angus herd. His carcass numbers are phenomenal and his greatest asset is his daughters. Hard Drives are special, and the reason we used him heavily, and early because he was out of one of Craig Bieber’s favorite cows. His semen is almost impossible to find and thus, his direct progeny are like gold! The two final Hard Drive embryos are in our recipients and will be calving this spring. This is a unique and rare opportunity to purchase one or more Hard Drive sons for your program! “BUILD YOUR HERD”

Milk Creek Advocate sires beef bulls with as much capacity as we have been able to find in a Red Angus pedigree. These flush brothers are deep, masculine, and stout. As we look to sell calves on the fall market, or feed out till the following spring, Advocate sired off-spring will push the scales down heavy which is exactly what we want in this business. Recommended for cows!

In 2019 we had many growth bulls available, and had more requests for bulls to use on heifers than we were able to provide. These two Nebula sons with a 71 and 79 pound birth weight respectively should provide calving ease. We used the sire of these bulls on our own heifers in 2018 and calved out 30 heifers in 2019 with no problems. We are confident these two bulls will meet your expectations for calving out a set of uniform calves eager to get up and nurse. Unregistered! Calving-ease alert! Recommended for heifers!

#1 Red Simmental bull for registrations with 16 EPD traits in the top 20%, and 11 traits in the top 4%. All Aboard is the #1 TI purebred bull available with +15 CE and +151 YW EPD. Cattle are extremely gentle, and have clean muscular, attractive phenotypes. -Allied Genetic Resources It is difficult to find a hole in the All Aboard progeny. When we clipped these bulls, they came in to the chute and stood solid for the entire clipping. They have puppy dog dispositions and do everything right. We are already planning our next flush to this phenomenal red Simmental bull. The 425 Red Angus donor dam to these bulls was a similar makeup to the sire with a capacious middle, long and elegant look, and great disposition.

Two full flush brothers who are thick made, yet very balanced and athletic in their stride. They continue to smoke out the pounds, and if we pushed these bulls, they would be the type to gain in excess of 5 pounds per day with the heterosis they exhibit in their pedigree. The 425 Red Angus donor dam made us some fantastic females, yet it did not matter what she was mated to, she always stamped great bulls. This is a sign of an exceptional cow! Other advantages she possessed was fertility, stayability and docility. Her impact in our red program is huge! Thus, this mating would be considered a 10, and the two sons they left will have the same impact upon any herd.

Another opportunity to buy two flush brothers and get the heterosis needed for big strapping calves in the fall. The Olie X 444 flush is meant to push out pounds of meat for the producer. Both the sire and dam are wide butted, and thick with capacious body depth. The calves will be the type and kind that push the scale down hard at weaning and will fill their big middles with milk and grass, and convert it to pounds. It will be fun to watch the calves of this mating grow. Phenotypically, they are the front pasture type with solid big feet, deep rear quarters, and wide bodies. This is a tremendous opportunity to acquire genetics in a set of two outstanding bulls who exhibit heterosis, and will produce a set of black hided scale smashing feeder calves. Recommended on cows!

Lot 72 starts a set of four naturally mated calves to our up-andcoming Open 8 Olie 573C herd sire (Olie X 6595) mating which creates the best of both Simmental and Angus genetics. We purchased this bull as a yearling from a good friend in Montana who owns Open 8 Genetics, and he has met and exceeded our every expectation. Our intent when we purchased this bull was to make a set of great replacement females. His heifers and bulls are equally uniform, thick, solid footed, athletic and really good! Specifically, lot 72 had an 86 pound birth weight, weaned off his mama cow at 744 pounds on October 24, 2019 with no creep, and has gained 3.2 pounds per day on our test. Currently, at well over 1,100 pounds he is really thick and will create a set of calves that will turn heads.

This is an exciting mating with Olie X Thunder X 6595! Our thought here is to create a SimAngus package in a more moderate frame with our maternally oriented Thunder daughters, and yet provide better calving ease without sacrificing gain and heterosis. It worked with a 69 pound birth weight and a 2.7 pound rate-of-gain. If you are looking for less birth weight, yet retaining heterosis in a black hided package here he is…and you will want to keep the daughters! “BUILD YOUR HERD”

Lot 73 had our top rate-of-gain for all the Sim-Angus sired bulls. At 3.5 pounds per day on a high-fiber, nutrient dense feed base his R-O-G is impressive. The heterosis this bull will provide to a cow herd will be noticed immediately in his calf crop. He is long-spined and deep, athletic in movement with muscle, masculinity and balance from end to end.

Lot 75’s dam is a big soggy cow who raises a big soggy calf every year. She exhibits good flesh, breeds back quickly, and is the matriarch of our SimAngus cow herd. Her fertility, structure, and longevity are a plus. This bull is thick topped, big bodied, walks like a stud, and carries himself with herd bull presence. Front pasture type will create scale smashing black hided feeders which will impress. Don’t eliminate him for his ADG as he came off his dam at 768 pounds with no creep.

Shear Force is a legend in the Simmental world and you will be hard-pressed to find a Simmental pedigree without his influence. This is for good reason as he has stood the test of time in the beef industry. Most bulls fall off over time, but his pedigree is still sought after. We scored this Shear Force son with a two for docility because he was a bit more excitable in the chute while trimming. He had a 3.2 pound rate-of-gain, is extremely moderate and athletic.

We selected the Graduate bull for three reasons after visiting South Dakota State University and seeing his daughters in production; calving ease on heifers, wet daughters with great flesh, and retained heterosis in our heifer program. His off-spring are phenotypically as close to perfect as you can get one; moderate framed, easy to be around, and make really good cows with perfect udders! With a 17.1 calving ease and -3.2 Birth Weight EPD respectively, he is a no miss calving ease specialist who does not disappoint. At ten years of age he continues to be a go-to for many astute breeders because he does so many things right, and did I mention, his daughters are to fall in love with!

Lot 78-80 are thick made bulls with birth weights in the 70s. They carry the same great look and shape of their dam, solid leg and foot structure, and should provide more ease of calving, yet provide the outcross and the heterosis for gain and pounds. The dispositions are quiet and confident! An added benefit, they all carry the blood of the great Shear Force! Recommended on heifers!

The final bull in the sale catalog is a Night Ride son, another light birth weight black hided bull who comes from A.I. service to one of our favorite SimAngus cows. Nightride is touted as a calving ease bull who sires calves with lots of vigor. He will also sire square made, stout hipped cattle, and will moderate frame. You can add heterosis without the frame, and Nightride will provide good looking cattle.

Females
When you are a purebred breeder and genetic supplier it is difficult to part with your best knowing she has a lifetime of production ahead of her. She also represents everything you believe in your core about building a herd because these are your convictions… making females, and you know, great females make great bulls! The five heifers available in the sale are hard to part with because when you breed from the ground up as we have, you offer the future, and look back and reflect on the decisions to mate your best cows, and then, it happens, and you are a bit in awe at what God has created. The challenge now is to be the good steward in caring for these animals, and to improve what is already perfect in the eyes of the Creator. Our best to you with these “BUILD YOUR HERD” females as you continue what we have begun with the guidance and direction from above. They are outstanding females!

We once again offer the heart of our herd with two own daughters to the Open 8 Olie 573C bull. (Olie X 6595) When you build a cow herd you look for certain traits; calving ease represented with a clean smooth slope to the shoulder, a softness throughout the body from rear to front, sound bone structure with solid feet to carry her a lifetime, great udder attachment and balance with small teats, a quiet disposition, the ability to store lots of grass, which converts to milk, which transfers to pounds, which creates revenue, and passes on those great genetics to make more mama cows and great herd sires. This is exactly what the 573C bull does with his pedigree. Proof is in these clean made females which carry his heterosis genes. Lot 83 and lot 84 will make excellent moderate framed front pasture cows.
