Dear Cattle Producer,
The other day, while fertility testing these bulls, I was watching for structural soundness and disposition. Marty Ropp, of Accelerated Genetics, had an article about over feeding yearling bulls. I believe that it was in the May edition of the SimTalk if you would like to read it. This article articulated what we have been trying to do for years by feeding our bulls for 2 1/2 to 3 pounds of gain per day. The bulls grow adequately and when you look at the bull you see the muscling structure and not just fat.
I find that when young bulls are gaining 4 to 5 pounds a day it is detrimental to their ability to service cows. You do not get genetic results from a feed bucket.

As most of you know, we like to feed calves from our customers. These calves are at the top of the market and that is how we are able to make them work. For example: the kill sheet as of 12-10-19 reported that for 38 head, they went 94.74% choice, 65% 1’s & 2’s, 39.47% CAB and had a net premium of $64.84. This was a group of heifers, made up of a mix of customer calves and our own. I would say they were around 1/2 to full Simmental cattle. The cattle are harvested on the rail at Cargill and we get all the carcass data back on our fat cattle. I encourage you to look at the carcass data and EPD that we provide for these herd bulls.

NOTES: We color coded the bulls for where their EPDs rank against breed averages. We hope this helps anyone unfamiliar with EPDs to find bulls with the traits they Top 1% want. The 1/2 blood bulls are ranked on the hybrid % table. Please note that the Red Top 5% Angus bulls should not be compared to the Top 20% other percentage bulls since they are a dif- Top 50% ferent breed composition. SALE PROCEDURE: The cattle will sell by video on sale day. Indoor bull viewing is available from 10:00 am until the end of the sale. We will not be running the bulls through the sale ring, instead the sale will be on video in the shop. The sale will be a full auction and sale order will be available sale day and on the website. (If you do not find the sale order on the website please call and we will send you a copy.) ULTRASOUND: The ultrasound was delayed this year because she had problems with her equipment. We hope to have results on sale day depending on weather and time constrains. $100 off each bull you buy and take home that day. Last year we fed over 1000 head of feeder cattle sired by Hill’s Ranch bulls. We have enjoyed great success with this system and would like to include more cattle.
