President Message Dear Hereford Breeders and Cattlemen,
2019 has been a memorable year for me being able to serve as president of this great association. We all know it has not been an easy year farming, but as Hereford breeders in our state we have had some great moments to look back on.
Herefords took top honors at the Wisconsin State Fair with Supreme Champion Heifer in the junior show exhibited by Lauren May and in the open show. Hereford bulls took both By: Nathan Reinke Supreme Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion. WHA President Supreme Champion Bull was exhibited by Steiny’s Herefords of New Lisbon and Reserve Supreme Champion Bull exhibited by Wildcat Cattle Company of Darlington. We also had a great and informative field day put on by Huth Polled Herefords bringing a diverse group of beef producers across the state.
We have suffered a great loss to our association with the passing away of Jean Dalton, wife of John Dalton, of Dalton Polled Herefords. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the John Dalton family.
I am looking forward to 2020 and what new opportunities it will bring our great breed. Let’s continue to make Herefords Wisconsin’s breed of choice. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A Minute with the Meents
The Wisconsin Review A publication of the Wisconsin Polled Hereford Association
As the last 40 days of this decade are upon us, I am very much looking forward to 2020. This past year has been a challenge for many in the agricultural industry with a very tough winter, super soggy planting conditions, and lower commodity prices. However, I am extremely optimistic with the new decade just around the corner. By: John Meents, The world population continues to AHA Fieldman grow steadily. In 2013 the world 419-306-7480 population was at 7 billion, in 2020 it will be 7.6 billion, in 2026, 8 billion, and over 9 billion in 2045. The far east is leading the growth and is projected to continue that growth in population. These Asian countries have developed a taste for U.S. beef. They like it and like it a lot! They prefer Prime beef, and most of today’s U.S. Prime beef is being exported to Japan. Thus, I am very optimistic about the demand for high quality beef produced by U.S. farmers and ranchers. Today, there is a $23.50 per hundred-pound spread between Choice and Select beef and approximately, $48.00 per hundredpound spread between Prime and Select. Those are near record spread prices, and indicate to me the bullish demand for the highest price cuts and highest quality of product. So, as you make genetic breeding decisions moving you into the next decade, put a little more emphasis on carcass traits. Please note, I am NOT a single trait selector believer, except for my personal EPD which is CBB$. That is Check Book Balance. So bottom line: MAKE YOUR CATTLE BETTER TODAY, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO MARKET THEM TOMMOROW. On one other subject: The Great Midwest Hereford Influenced Feeder Calf Sale is January 6, 2020. If you or any of your bull customers have any Hereford influenced feeder calves to sell, please call me: 419-306-7480, or Brent Lowderman of Carthage Livestock, INC: 309-221-9621. It would be a great service to your bull customers to call them and share that you have a market for their feeder calves. Wishing you a Merry Christmas!

Pierce’s Hereford Haven Welcomes New Additions
Ken and Sandy Pierce of Pierce’s Hereford Haven in Baraboo, Wis., are pleased to announce the birth of their newest grandchildren…
Remembering Jean Dalton
On Saturday, November 9, 2019, at her home in Emerald, Wis., Jean Marie (Leverty) Dalton, 60, fell asleep wrapped in the arms of Jesus, surrounded by the love of family. Jean was born on February 18, 1959 in New Richmond, Wis., to Tom and Virginia Leverty. She was raised in New Richmond and graduated from New Richmond High School with the class of 1977. Thirty-seven years ago, Jean was united in marriage to the love of her life, John. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters who meant the world to her and later gave her three sons-in-law that she cherished and ten grandchildren who were her pride and joy. Jean made a career in insurance, but her true passion was taking care of her family and home. Jean loved all of the time she spent with John, helping on the farm, going for rides around the countryside or just admiring the life they created together. Jean was one of the strongest women in the world. She was so gracious and generous to everyone. Even as God held her hand as she walked down the Yellow Brick Road, she continued to think of everyone before herself. You could see the great pride Jean took in all that she did; from her beautiful flower beds, bountiful vegetable gardens, her enormous Christmas cookie variety, and the large selection of canned goods she prepared. She loved to share all that she made. Her involvement in a local homemakers club flourished into a group of friends she considered family. She was a former Master Gardener, part of the Willow River Quilters Guild and loved scrapbooking. John and Jean found great friendships in the Hereford Community. She loved the trips they took and visiting the friends they met along the way. Jean loved hosting family and friends for events from small gatherings like tea parties with her Homemakers club to large family holidays and everything in between. She always had a wonderful home cooked meal to share and a way to decorate for any occasion. In all that she did she could make everyone feel special. Her kind heart and beautiful smile will be missed by everyone that knew her. Whether you knew her for years or only a few minutes, you could feel the love she had for life. Jean will remain in the hearts of her loving husband, John; children: Missy, Matt, Emma, Addalyn, Brynlee & Brystol Trautmiller; Shelly, Ed, Isabelle & McKynlee Peterson; and Laura, Gabe, Alex, Brady, Landon & Evelyn Bohatta; siblings: Dennis Leverty, Rosie (Mike) Knutson, Jim Leverty, Pat (Heather) Leverty, Judy (Steve) Guise, Steve (Sandy) Dalton, Tom (Terry) Dalton, Debbie (Joe) Clennon, David Dalton, and Julie Dalton; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law April and Marilyn and many special friends. Jean was greeted at Heaven’s gate by her parents, Tom and Virginia Leverty; in laws Jack & Kary Dalton; and sister-in-law Kim Leverty.

Mittag’s Shadow Ridge Ranch Donates Heifer
At the 2019 Minnesota Beef Expo, Mittag’s Shadow Ridge Ranch owned by Randy and Liz Mittag of River Falls, Wis., donated a Hereford heifer through the menoring program. Herefords were the featured breed at this year’s Expo. Shadow Ridge Ranch was established on 1996 on a small hobby farm outside of River Falls, Wisconsin. The local vet recommended raising registered Polled Herefords because of their docile temperament, mothering ability and lack of horns, and so the first cow and calf were purchased at an auction. The herd soon increased with cattle purchased by private treaty and at the Indianhead Polled Hereford Association annual cattle sale. Through the use of Artificial Insemination and quality herd sires, the herd increased with cattle that have sound legs and feet, good udders, excellent mothering ability and quality carcasses with large rib eye and well-marbled meat. Randy and Liz are honored to be able to provide a heifer to a young person. Through this mentoring program, they hope to share their experience and love of the Hereford cattle. Addison Mitchell of Waterville, Minnesota was the recipient of Shadow Ridge Raleigh, a heifer born May 1, 2019. 14
