The President’s Pen As I set here in for the evening as the snow falls, it’s a reminder of the season that we are in and the other that is fast approaching! Calving season is here and bull sales on the doorstep of becoming a daily event here in KS. I want to thank all those that took the time to join us in Hutchinson for the annual meeting and banquet, a great evening of fellowship, fundraising and of course prime rib meal. For my first “Presidents Pen “ Anne asked that I introduce myself and give an overview of my involvement within the breed, so hopefully without boring you here it is… My history in the Angus business traces back to Johnson Workman, a pioneer in agriculture and the Angus breed, who established his herd in 1913. His program descended from the first Angus cattle imported from the original birthplace of Angus cattle Scotland, to Victoria, KS by the legendary George Grant. My great-grandfather, Walter McCurry, purchased two Angus heifers from his brother-inlaw, Johnson Workman, and the rest is history!

now for national judging contests. I had great industry opportunities that I would encourage anyone to do that hasn’t but might still qualify for is KLA “Young Stockman’s Academy” and the AAA “Beef Leaders Institute.” I enjoyed the education and diversity of the participants and the overview of the entire beef industry scope. These two organizations invested in many through these programs and again highly encourage anyone to participate.

As the Angus business has evolved, so has our participation as an operation from the Pratt Commercial Female Sale to the former KS Angus Futurity Show & Sale. Our One of my earliest memories that I treasure, and is very Angus business focuses on producing bulls for commercial imprinting on me, is a picture of myself as a very young boy operations with our annual bull sale in March each year with both my grandpas (AJ McCurry and John Smith) at the while also initiating a commercial female sale conducted in KS Angus Futurity with a direct daughter of the first cow December each year where our customers can showcase that mom and dad bought at the 1982 futurity from another the offspring of McCurry Angus breeding. In 2015 our pioneer and great leader of the Ks Angus Assn Mr. George family was selected as the Beef Improvement Federation Crenshaw. Seedstock Producer of the Year would rank right up there as a highlight. So like I said that Angus has always been a part of my life and have even been told that I am “Double Bred” Angus My wife Melody and I just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary on December 31st. Thanks to a fellow Angus As a Junior Angus member coming up through the junior friend, we were introduced in Denver while judging at the ranks, I always looked up to the older junior members and NWSS. She is a Texan that graduated from OSU so our thus followed in the footsteps serving in all the officer children take sides for the “Pokes” or the “Cats”. We have capacities within the KJAA. I then enjoyed and cherished three (3) children: Aubree (8), Molly (5) and Drew (3). You wearing the “Green Jacket” on the NJAA Board while also can imagine the energy level in our household plus all the traveling the country meeting kids and families from all kids’ activities. Lots of life adventures! They are a BIG help walks of life with the common ground of Angus enthusiasm! when it comes to working cattle, feeding, pushing cattle, I participated in most all the contests at the National Junior driving the gator and “helping”. Now, I have the chance to Angus Show with the highlights being winning a Crystal raise my children in the same organizations that molded my Award at the NJAS, Outstanding Leadership award for the generation of Angus breeders and leaders. NJAA, CAB Scholarship, Black Kettle Cook-off award (with fellow KJAA members that I still call great friends today) we To conclude I want to thank the membership for the opporalso were very competitive in team sales. After my junior tunity to serve and give back and invite you to call, text, or career was up and during my final years of college we had email me with questions or comments regarding your the fortune of breeding/raising/showing 3 consecutive organization – the Kansas Angus Association! National Jr Angus Show Champions. If there was a contest, the Kansas Juniors in my era participated in conJohn McCurry tests…it wasn’t an option from our advisors. So in 1997, 2020 President the Ks Jr Angus Assn started the journey to win years of Kansas Angus Association consecutive Sweepstakes awards at the NJAS. Glad to (620) 727-5197 have been a part of that for many years. mccurryangus@outlook.com Angus has been always been a part of my life…

Collegiate Livestock Judging has been a huge part of my life with the opportunity to compete on nationally competitive teams and programs at Butler Community College & Kansas State University. This education and coaching has led to phenomenal opportunities such as judging at the American Royal, North American International Livestock Show, San Antonio Jr. Heifers, National Western, Nat’l Jr Angus Show and multiple national and state shows of Angus and other breeds, while also serving as an official

NWSS Angus Bull Sale Sets Standard for 2020 Sale Season Hundreds of producers gathered in the Mile-High City to bid on the breed’s best.

The 2020 National Western Angus Bull Sale set the tone for a year of growth, progress and excitement in the Business Breed. The renewed event commanded the attention of hundreds of visitors and buyers from across the nation, packing the stalls outside and stands inside the Beef Palace Auction arena at the National Western Stock Show. As the final gavel fell on Thursday, Jan. 16, a total of 30 registered bulls grossed $485,000, with an average of $16,166. The high-selling lot, Wilks Cavalry 9035 consigned by Wilks Ranches of Eastland, Texas, sold for $85,000. The second high-selling lot, HRX Copenhagen, brought $80,000 and was co-consigned by Krebs Ranch of Gordon, Nebraska, and Barragree Cattle Co. of Absarokee, Montana. “By moving the sale’s start time up and taking the show portion out, we made it more convenient for both the buyers and the sellers,” Sale Manager and Angus Regional Manager Jeff Mafi said. “We thank all the bidders and buyers for their support of the sale. We had a great set of consigners who brought an outstanding set of genetics to the National Western Angus Bull Sale.” From top to bottom, the bulls offered a high caliber of both phenotype and genetic profiles. Bulls were required to be genomic tested and sold with genetic predictions. Along with the changes to the sale date, time and location, the sale attracted several new consigners and an influx of bidders and supporters. “We felt like the catalog redesign was very well received, and including videos helped the bulls reach the right buyers prior to sale day,” Mafi said. “We had a great turn out of folks from all over the country and the bulls sold extremely well.” Consignments ranged in age from March bulls to coming three-year-olds and were consigned by producers from across the country. Bulls were displayed in both the Yards and the Hill throughout the National Western Stock Show, and videos were included in the online sale catalog for additional visibility. “The change of venue and format made it more practical for our commercial bull buyers to be able to attend, and it was apparent that producers took notice of the quality of bulls brought forth,” Association CEO Mark McCully said. “We look forward to building on the excitement and momentum that this sale generated for many years to come.”

Angus Foundation Scholarship Applications Open Now The Angus Foundation continues to support the next generation of agriculturists.

Scholarship applications are now available for college students associated with the Angus breed. This past year, the Angus Foundation awarded $227,700 in scholarships at the 2019 National Junior Angus Show alone, and next year will be no different. The Angus Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students each year as a way to help Angus youth achieve their educational goals and offset the continually rising costs of tuition at higher education institutions. “We have a responsibility to support the next generation of agriculturalists here at the Angus Foundation,” said Rod Schoenbine, Angus Foundation director of development. “With education costs being higher than ever, we want to help students in their educational endeavors, and awarding scholarships is a key factor.”

4 ▪ Kansas Angus News

Today, countless past junior Angus members have benefitted from the financial support of Angus Foundation-funded scholarships. This year, five past scholarship recipients were put in the spotlight in the Angus Foundation Success Story campaign. “The Angus Foundation’s core mission of youth, education and research are so important to developing young people to come back into our breed, into our community and to our industry as a whole,” said Jara Settles, vice president of livestock mitigation at the Livestock Marketing Association and past scholarship recipient. “If we don’t invest in these young people and welcome them back in and give them truly viable opportunities in terms of education and professional growth, they might leave us.” To see the stories and hear the success of past recipients, visit angus.org/ foundation. Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships Applicants for undergraduate and graduate scholarships must have, at one time, been a member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and currently be an active junior, regular or life member of the American Angus Association. The following documents are required to be considered for a 2020 undergraduate or graduate scholarship: the 2020 scholarship application; three letters of recommendation; copy of current high school/college/university transcript; and applicant’s Association member code. Undergraduate and graduate scholarship applications, eligibility requirements and application guidelines can be found online at AngusFoundation.org. Applications are due May 1, 2020. Allied Angus Breeders Scholarships The Angus Foundation also will award three $1,000 scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students who use Angus genetics in a commercial cattle operation breeding program or whose parents use Angus genetics. Emphasis will be placed on applicants’ knowledge of the cattle industry and perspective of the Angus breed. Applicants or their parents/guardians must be members of the American Angus Association or have an affiliate member code. The applicants or their parents/guardians must have transferred or been transferred an Angus registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2018). The scholarship is applicable to any field of study. A separate application, from the general Foundation application, is required for the Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship. The application can be found on the Angus Foundation website. Applicants having received or applied for Angus Foundation undergraduate scholarships using our standard general application this year or in past years will not be considered for this scholarship. Certified Angus Beef/National Junior Angus Association Scholarship Since 1990, the NJAA has teamed up with Certified Angus Beef (CAB) LLC to help Angus youth pursue their higher education goals. The selected applicant will receive a $1,000 scholarship. A separate application from the Angus Foundation scholarship application is required for the CAB/ NJAA scholarship. Requirements are similar to the general Angus Foundation scholarship; more details can be found on the application. The application is available on the Angus Foundation website. “At the Angus Foundation’s core are youth and education,” Schoenbine said. “Our Angus and allied commercial producer youth deserve the best higher education learning environment they can experience, and these scholarship opportunities help make that possible.” Since 1998, the Angus Foundation has awarded more than $3.5 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Capturing Value for Calves

by Morgan Marley The way we market fed cattle has changed. Better formula and grid-based pricing structures channeled greater returns to cattlemen, which led to higher quality in the American cow herd. It trickles down to the cow-calf producer and how they choose to sell calves. Consumer dollars favor adding value to the end product, and it pays to start down that road while still on the ranch. That’s the consensus of panelists at the 2019 Range Beef Cow Symposium in Mitchell, Neb. Those included the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand’s Paul Dykstra, Nebraska feeder and rancher Gary Darnall and South Dakota Angus cattleman Britton Blair. “As a cow-calf producer, we have more opportunities to receive value at different segments, or different points in our operation than any other segment in our industry,” Darnall said. “But we really find out when we retain ownership.”

their total value on a commodity market,” Blair said. “Whether you’ve sold them at the highest price at the sale that day or not.”

All the panelists echoed that message. So why don’t more producers retain ownership of their calves all the way to the packer? Risk. There’s a higher death loss once calves leave your ranch. But Blair said, “that comes back on you” and making sure of your vaccination and management program. “The longer you own the animal, the longer you’re at the mercy of the market,” Darnall said. Market swings also bring opportunity to alert watchers who can hedge to lock in a profit. “But you have to be ready to pull the trigger,” Blair said. When you get past the risk, advantages wait for those who try.

Adding value matters to your bottom line, but also to consumers. They expect the beef on their dinner table to be worth its relatively higher price. “As we increase marbling and quality grade substantially, then we also increase the percentage of satisfied eating experiences for consumers,” Dykstra said. Cattle have changed in recent years, he noted with a nod to the widespread drought several years ago. “Since then, cow herds have built back with replacements that genetically improved quality grade,” Dykstra said, resulting in more Choice and higher grading carcasses than ever. Demand, however, “remains robust.”

Many cattlemen don’t operate in commercial feeding areas, and it takes effort to contact feedyard managers. But there aren’t a lot of secrets in the cattle business, the panelists said. Just ask the right people the right questions.

Grid pricing reflects a portion of the cutout values, which have increased dramatically for premium quality, he added. In early November, a typical Prime carcass was worth nearly $300 more than Select. The CAB premium was $218 and Choice was $127. If you retained ownership, had above -average cattle and sold on a grid in fall 2019, you should have received a “The good part is, the livestock business is a people business,” Blair said. hefty paycheck. “Packers will only add Choice premiums to our pocket“And I think it’s easy to talk to those guys. And those guys want customers book if we beat the average of cattle harvested on a weekly basis,” and they want to talk to you. They want the opportunity to do business with Dykstra explained. It’s natural to think of the individual animals, and grids you.” even pay on a per-carcass basis, but some value calculations come from load and plant averages. The Choice premium is a case in point. Deciding to retain ownership is a dynamic commitment involving how and “When we talk about the Choice-Select spread at $25 and $26 here most when. “The market is a moving target,” Blair said, and it may not fit every recently, we don’t get all of that,” Dykstra explained. “We get 30% of it year. “It makes more sense to retain ownership in a bad market than a because the packer expects 70% Choice on a weekly basis.” good one, even though that’s the hardest time.” When the market is high, you’re going to be profitable no matter how you market your calves. But Producing average quality isn’t the goal. In the last four years, 30% of CAB when times are tough, retaining ownership can buy time for the market to sales growth has come from Prime alone. “Most of us don’t think about a go up and capture more dollars. grocery store as an area where we’re going to see a lot of folks wanting to pay for something like Prime quality grade product,” Dykstra said, “but we “A lot of people don’t know that some feedyards will finance the cattle, the certainly have seen that happen.” Consumer demand is there. feed and the risk protection,” Blair said. “It makes it pretty easy when you send your cattle there. They’ll send you back around 75% of the value of Cattlemen just have to keep aiming for higher quality to meet it and reap your calves and keep 25% as essentially money down. They’ll finance the the premiums. rest.” That takes care of some cash-flow concerns, perhaps offering significant payment in the fall and another when calves are finished a few months later. Another advantage is the information from packer harvest reports. “The carcass data you get back can be very valuable to you,” Darnall said. “You can take it back home and use it in your management program to help increase whatever traits you want, to add more value to your product.” Blair later said knowing both feedyard and carcass performance helps in choosing a packer grid to market through. After a few years of success, dollars may argue for staying the course. “Once you’ve retained ownership, and if you have those above-average cattle, you’ll never get paid for February 2020 ▪ 23

What and Why Are They Buying? Changing Consumer Attitudes Toward Beef

another product to stay within their values than “consume additional information” to justify buying beef.

by Nicole Erceg

The work ahead Today, proof of shared values drive consumer trust more than facts. A July Trust: it’s a bond not easily formed, but effortlessly broken. 2018 study published in peer-reviewed Animals indicates U.S. consumers From Watergate to Exxon, the Clinton scandal, sub-prime mortgage crisis, are willing to pay up to $5 per entrée more for welfare-certified products if BP oil spill, Lance Armstrong’s fall from glory and today’s #MeToo move- they trust the label claims. ment, media narratives have conditioned us to be skeptics. Generations of Trust is the key and the same study reported only 49% of respondents headlines have told us those we thought were trustworthy can’t always be trusted the beef industry to treat animals well. trusted. We are no longer simply competing for consumer dollars, we’re competing for their hearts, minds and voices. The latter three are vital to the future It’s a lesson learned again and again. Those who get big gain power, and ranch bottom line. power unchecked results in devastating consequences. We need checks and balances to hold everyone accountable to do the right things. At the end of the day, both consumers and producers want to do the right So when consumers read a headline that “Big Ag” doesn’t have their best thing by the animals and environment we rely on. It’s common ground we interests at heart, it’s believable. When they hear that beef cattle are decan build on, but fraught with skepticism we’ll all need to overcome. stroying the environment (even if it defies all logic), it might be true. A Baking Business article on food trends reports the rise of the Flexitarian (omnivore), diets that attempt to mitigate climate change, and those who Don’t take it personally; the skepticism is a societal condition. Public trust don’t halt meat consumption altogether but shift one purchase a week to has eroded in nearly every industry. What can beef producers do to gain an alternative protein. It’s a burger that’s part mushroom, part beef. It’s a more consumer confidence? restaurant order switched from beef to salad or fish. If we want our consumers to shift their perspectives and not their purchases, it will require shifts on the ranch. When more than 50% of consumers lack trust in our ability to humanely raise animals, we’ll need to create a brand promise and deliver – the proof is in the pudding. Transparency is no longer optional, it’s the price we must pay for trust. The best direct-to-consumer channel we have isn’t social media. Nor is it relying on the mass media to set our narrative, though both are important. It’s the label on the meat package in the case and how that product performs in their kitchen.

The good news Shifting the narrative (even with a big advertising budget) is easier said than done, but it can be done. Today, beef demand is strong. USDA says domestic consumers enjoyed a whopping 57.2 pounds (lb.) per person in 2018. The upward trend in quality has created more consistent, great-tasting beef that keeps people coming back to the meat case for more. It’s the beef version of proof in the pudding: Taste is the No. 1 driver of beef demand. The taste factor and marbling that drives it is the key metric in putting gold in the trust bank. It’s following through on a brand promise, one the Certified Angus Beef ® brand continuously makes for taste and quality. It’s what has grown our market share to a record 1.25 billion lb.—but it’s not enough to keep it. Taste is a promise that must be delivered, yes, but today’s consumer demands more. Recent research confirms taste and quality are the top drivers, but our consumer is hunting for a brand that also promises sustainability, environmental stewardship and animal welfare.

Deeper relationships As a brand we monitor the headlines, respond to media inquiries, create resources around hot topics and bring hundreds of our foodservice and retail partners to the ranch each year. Those who have seen it and met you, walk away big fans, content that their beef comes from families they can trust. Similarly, consumers grant authority by relationship, not by title, office or organization size—but it’s physically impossible to have them all out to the ranch for a day. A deeper relationship with our consumer is key, one we’re working to cultivate. But until there’s a documented check-and-balance behind the label they read before buying, one that’s more than just beef quality, we’ll never be able to satisfy the beef eaters who are now hungry for simplified proof that brands have supply chains in line with their values. It’s not always just another efficiency that puts dollars in ranch pockets. Maintaining profitability moving forward could mean doing what our consumers consider the right thing, and showing our work. It might also mean doing things we don’t want to, simply because our ultimate customer does. The hard work to earn trust and keep it feels just a bit lighter when it’s not only about consumer demands for change, but glowing feedback for the work done so far: “My wife and I purchase Certified Angus Beef because we have found it to be the absolute BEST. We would like to thank everyone that produces this most outstanding product. I have some T-Bones on the grill right now.”

You’re probably thinking, “Good news! I do all of those things! That’s an easy promise to deliver on because the beef industry is already doing that!” We are, but not in the eyes of the consumer. Science may say beef production is carbon neutral, that animal welfare is the best it’s ever been, but for consumers in an era of skepticism, science is just another person’s Trust = dollars. opinion. Surveys show many consumers today would rather reach for
