President’s Message State of the American Tarentaise Association: The state of the American Tarentaise Association is in trouble. We have had declining membership and registrations for years. We are at a critical point for our association. That being said, you can have confidence that your board is doing everything in their power to make the Association as attractive as our cattle.

The desire for Tarentaise cattle is strong, but being able to get our members with buyers has been limited.

We have, with the help of our vendor partner Novel Designs, updated and modernized our website. One of the key features is the Sale Barn tab. You are able to post your animals for sale for FREE until January 2020, after that the cost is $15 for a three month ad. In addition to posting on the website, the post will automatically go to our Facebook Page. Novel Design has also agreed to a special price to help any member that would like to update their website. They do all the work and will help maintain the site.

Neogen has agreed to special pricing for our membership on the tests needed. We will be able to offer kits to help get tissue samples. We pay $4 per sample more for hair, if we switch to tissue, the samples stay in their system forever and can be retested. Please consider sending in your genetic testing through the Tarentaise Association.

We also will start building a Tarentaise database.

We are looking at ways to modernize our records. Today we store everything off-site and it can be difficult to get the information we need in a timely matter. It also limits us on what we can offer to the membership. We are diligently looking at ways to improve things for the office.

Finally, we are looking for other vendor partners to work with to try and save money for the membership. We are in discussions with AllFlex tags to see if we can help with tags and EID tags.

You will find a Commercial herds tab on the website. The board is reaching out to our commercial producers and are looking for more ways to include them in the association. Our commercial producers are important and we need to promote them as well. That is why there will be a Sale Barn under the Commercial tab for Tarentaise influenced commercial cattle on our website as well as promoted on Facebook.

We are also embracing our friends in the Dairy industry. You will see articles in this newsletter promoting the milk industry. Our stance is that as long as they fit the definition of Tarentaise cattle, we will include them and do everything we can to support them. Our cattle are dual purpose and we need to embrace that.

The Association needs your help and support, but the desire for our Tarentaise cattle remains strong and getting stronger. We can remain confident in our cattle and how they can perform. I have full confidence in the board and the directions they are looking to take the American Tarentaise Association to make it stronger and larger in the future. I am extremely proud to be President and be surrounded with a talented and diverse group of people on the board.

I am a 38 year old, 5th generation rancher in Central and West Texas and spent much of my early years working at my family’s cattle auction in Llano, Texas. My wife, Sarabeth and I have two children. Marykate is 3 and Hatch III is just over two months old.

Give us a brief description of your Tarentaise herd and other cattle interests.

Our commercial herd of about 300 cows is primarily Tarentaise influenced cows running with Charolais bulls. We do have a smaller herd of Red Angus we used Tarentaise bulls on. In addition to our commercial herd, we have a Tarentaise purebred/Fullblood herd, a registered Brahman herd and a handful of club calf cows. Sometimes we run a couple hundred yearlings to sell in the fall.

Give a brief description of yourself. Education, jobs, etc.

I attended Cornell University and majored in Animal Science in 2004 and received a Masters of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in 2014. After graduating from Cornell, I spent time in Argentina learning Spanish and traveling after which I spent about 10 years in financial services in New York, Boston, and Dallas. In 2013 my father passed away and I took over the family commercial herd of primarily Angus cattle and quickly started introducing Tarentaise genetics as I remember them as being the best mother cows growing up. For the last 5 years I have turned our commercial herd to about 80% Tarentaise influence cows and am building a small herd of registered cattle. In June of 2018, I turned over my graphics and tradeshow production business, RedSmith Graphic Solutions, over to the management team and have since converted our stockyards into a beef cattle genetics center, focusing on AI and ET services as well as heifer and bull development.

What are some of your goals for the ATA?

My goal is to position the association to better educate the commercial industry and help promote our breeder’s cattle to the commercial market as well as the purebred market.

What are the strengths of the Tarentaise in your opinion?

Tarentaise bring a moderate frame size, superior milking, and udder quality as well as longevity. I have not seen a herd or specific breed that Tarentaise has not made better when crossing.

JUNIOR MEMBER SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Brandon Ledahl Brandon is the 18-year-old son of Brian and Tami Ledahl from Zahl, North Dakota. He graduated from Grenora Public School in May 2019. Currently he attends Dickinson State University and is majoring in Farm and Ranch Management.

Brandon was an ATA Junior Member for nine years along with being very active in other organizations including 4-H and his schools FFA Chapter. In 4-H, Brandon completed projects in woodworking and welding. He held the Vice President officer position for one year and President officer position for two years. He also showed sheep, steers, and heifers for several years. Some of his many accomplishments include winning numerous classes and showmanship competitions.

Brandon was very active in school activities such as holding the Sentinel officer position in his high school’s FFA Chapter, being an Honor Roll member, competing in wrestling and football. Outside of school he was involved in youth group, worked at Horizon Resources in Grenora, helped coach the youth wrestling organization, and worked at Prairie Welding in Williston.

Got milk?

by Melisa Bertz, Board Member The dairy industry used the advertising slogan, “Got Milk” for years on posters, advertisements and commercials encouraging us all to drink more milk. I am always reminded of this slogan when producers are looking for more efficient momma cows and ask them, “You got Tarentaise? They Got Milk!”

Tarentaise is uniquely positioned in the beef industry right now as we have more to offer than ever before. The genetic traits of the breed have never been a secret: extra milk, sustainability, increased efficiency and meat quality. In the current bearish market, beef producers strive to lower input costs while increasing the production of a high quality product that consumers trust.

It is rare to find cattle with the propensity to accomplish both, but we have the answer with Tarentaise. I believe the secret lies in the “milk quality” found within the genetic profile of this breed. In my experience as a cattle producer, I have never heard a negative comment about the Tarentaise female’s ability to milk. We all favor a female that can wean off a higher percent of her body weight while eating any forage type. Many breeds selected cattle with high milk EPDs during the past 30 years only to discover increased input costs and a large framed, late maturing cow herd. As the margins tighten for cattlemen, efficiency moves to the front of selection pressure, especially in the cow herd. Milk and maternal ability are significant profit drivers, therefore the female who can convert various forage types within multiple environments into pounds of beef is a win!

No strangers to efficiency, the dairy industry has found the unique secret of Tarentaise milk. Realizing a 4% butterfat bonus, dairy producers are also capitalizing on the extra heterosis found within our gene pool. The desire to have higher quality milk from a low input cow is huge. The high quality butter fat and the promise of being A2 milk (milk free from carrying the A1 beta casein gene) the future is bright in multiple production scenarios. Dairy producers specializing in A2 milk, will likely be seeking out some genetically tested Tarentaise bull semen as soon as possible. Just today at my local grocery store, a half gallon of whole milk was priced at $2.19 while a carton of A2 milk was $4.99. By utilizing a Tarentaise bull carrying the A2 gene, dairy producers open up an entirely new market sector. If you are unfamiliar with A2 milk, I encourage you to fire up your search engine and dig into milk quality and human health.

Whether you are planning to add Tarentaise to your beef or dairy herd in a cross-breeding system, ask yourself or challenge other cattlemen, “You got Tarentaise?” They Got Milk!”

tarentaise cattle in colorado high country High altitude sickness in cattle, also called High Mountain Disease (HMD), Brisket Disease, or Dropsy, is from the lower oxygen level at higher elevations and historically has happened at elevations above 7000’. More recently this disease has been showing up at lower elevations and even fat cattle in feedlots appear to be dying from HMD. HMD is brought on by either hereditary traits or environmental causes, and often both. This disease is very costly to cattlemen, with death losses in the Rocky Mountain region running, sometimes, between 10% and 20%.

Welcome to my home, we have been testing cattle for this disease for over a quarter of a century. We are consistently trying to find animals that carry the genetics to survive at the high elevations we live in. The test that we have performed on our cattle is called a Pulmonary Arterial Pressure test or PAP test. The Tarentaise crossbred calves that we have tested, to date, seem to excel in this test. With the calves we have tested so far having 100% passing at weaning and 100% passing at a year of age. We test the cattle at weaning as a way of sorting, if they don’t pass at weaning, they most definitely won’t pass as a yearly so there is no need to retain them. The test is most accurate at 1 year of age or older, in fact we have calves that pass at weaning that will not pass as a yearling. When I asked the vet doing our testing if he remembers doing any Tarentaise cattle, his answer was yes, but it has been awhile. He doesn’t remember a Tarentaise animal ever failing the test. This is quite unusual as in most herds I have seen tested, a 30% fail rate would be normal, or even very good, with some having a much higher fail rate.

To do this test the animals need to be at elevation a minimum of 3 weeks, but it has a higher degree of accuracy if they are there 8 weeks or more. When handling the cattle up in to the chute, you want to use low stress handling. Wind, weather, and the season of the year are things that are stressors that you can’t control, but people, dogs, whips, and hotshots you can.

The animal is caught in the chute, a halter is put on so that we can pull its head around to the left side. This gives Dr. Holt easier access to the right jugular vein. The animal’s neck is cleaned and sterilized, then he uses a 12-gauge needle to stick the jugular vein. A catheter is then passed down through the right side of the heart into the pulmonary artery. Once in the pulmonary artery he takes the average blood pressure, which is what is used as the animals PAP score. This is a very simplified description of the PAP test.

We then evaluate each score of the pulmonary arterial ( PA ) pressure and that tells us if they are hypertensive. PA pressures of 45 or lower are considered passing with lower than 40 being preferred. A PA pressure lower than 32 is seldom seen, in fact, PA pressures of 35 and 36 are considered very low.

Our ranch headquarters sits at 8200 feet with summer pasture on the mountain up over 10,000 feet. The Tarentaise X Angus cross calves we are testing at 8200’ are consistently in the thirties with lows of 33. To be born and stay at this elevation with these low PA pressures is quite impressive and uncommon in Angus.

One observation I have made through the years of PAP testing, is cattle with high PA pressures, or that have not been tested, but may have a tendency to have a high PA pressure are at a high risk to get sick with a respiratory problem which very well may lead to there death in time. Since we started using Tarentaise sires we have not had the sickness in the Tarentaise cross calves that we have in the Angus or the Hereford Angus cross calves. Not only respiratory sickness, but any sickness. The Tarentaise sired calves appear to have a superior immune system. I believe this is because, at least in part, that they have a healthier cardiovascular system. The research on disease resistance is only starting, which will help us learn if this is the case. In addition to the sickness, or more accurately, the lack of it in the Tarentaise calves is the lack of death loss. I only wish I could say that about the Angus or Hereford calves. I often hear the comment they are the “wrong color”. My answer to that is they are alive! I have yet to get paid for a dead calf.

To me the fact that Tarentaise cattle do well at the high elevations is great, but I expected that. In my opinion the real value this breed has to the cattle industry is their ability to resist disease. If you look at the changes in our industry you will see that the DNA testing going on today is for disease resistance. Tarentaise cattle may already have that.

I retired from the practice of Medicine and married to Bill Kullman, a retired airline pilot, in 2002. Bill had a herd of Wagyu cattle when we first married, but one breed was enough to handle, so the Tarentaise won. I have three adult children and seven grandchildren with the oldest being 13 years old. They all live in different states so I get to travel for holidays, county fairs, grandparents day and etc.

Give us a brief description of your Tarentaise herd and other cattle interests.

I have mostly Fullblood cattle. I import semen from France to get new genetics and occasionally use old original imported bull semen, or Fullblood imported embryo bulls from old time breeders. I have learned which bloodlines cross best for thickness, great udders, and disposition. Unlike our children, if the calves don’t turn out they can always go to market.

Why did you choose to include Tarentaise in your cattle operation?

Tarentaise are the only cattle I have raised. I purchased my first bred heifers from Doc Hatfield in Brothers Oregon in 1981 after attending a bull sale and touring the cow/calf herd. The disposition and maternal traits keep me sold on the breed. The cattle had to be manageable for someone working fulltime and raising children alone.

What advice do you have for people starting out with Tarentaise?

Keep them authentic. Maintain their uniqueness. Don’t try to make Tarentaise the same as other breeds. Produce animals that complement and add value to other breeds when used for crossbreeding.

What are one or two items that you have found to be critical for the success of your operation?

Purchase the best COWS for the foundation of the herd. Study genetics and find the pedigrees that cross best with your herd.

Who are some people that you credit for your success with Tarentaise?

Dorothy Stout, my early mentor. Neil Zimmerman who imported embryos and produced great Fullblood cattle. Dennis Puppe, who knew the history and traits of many sires and original herds. Scott Nash, extension agent, judge, and ultimate showman in Idaho advised on structure and soundness.

What is your favorite food?

Lobster

What is the top item on your bucket list?

When I’m really old and can’t work outside, I want to live where I have a ocean side view of the Pacific Ocrean.

At least something will be constantly moving.

What is your favorite place you have visited?

The Big Island of Hawaii. I self toured the Parker Ranch in a rental car.

A LOOK BACK - 1998 As we worked to put together this latest issue of the Tarentaise Talk and as we become more familiar with the Tarentaise in our office, I have spent some time looking through old magazines. This article will focus on 1998 and some of the interesting facts that I came across. Hopefully the information I provide will bring back some pleasant memories.

The 1998 officers were President Dennis Puppe, Virginia, Vice-President Darren Klein, Nebraska, Secretary Dorothy Stout, Montana, and Jim Flynn, Colorado. At the NWSS Awards Banquet two youth members received scholarships. The two members were Kacey Orr from Colorado and Leah Johnston from Iowa.

In the July/August 1998 issue the Pharo Cattle Company’s 8th Annual Sale results were listed. Top selling Tarentaise bull sold for $2,800.00. Also, in this issue were the results of the Virginia Beef Expo Tarentaise Sale which were topped by a $2,000.00 cow/calf pair consigned by Laurel Hill Farm.

Zimmerman Tarentaise from Minot, North Dakota bought the back cover of the issues of the 1998 Tarentaise Journal. They promoted in various ads their National Grand Champion Bulls from the 1996 NWSS (AZ Curtis) and the 1998 NWSS (AZ Lanny).

Plans were laid out for the 25th Anniversary of the ATA which was celebrated in Denver in January 1999, in several issues of the Journal.

The 1998 Junior ATA officers included President Willow Graham, Montana, Vice-President Michelle Eisenzimer, Montana, and Secretary/Treasurer Colette Graham, Montana. Regional Reporters were Lindsey Bloch, Virginia, Ryan Armbrust, Nebraska, and Maggie Fischer, North Dakota.

Each newsletter will feature A Look Back from a previous year. This feature will highlight photos and facts from that specific year.

who is the associated registry?

In the Fall of 2018, our office was contacted by the American Tarentaise Association Board about taking on the ATA as a client. After some communication the ATA and Associated Registry signed a three-year contract to provide registry, secretarial and treasury services for the ATA starting on January 1, 2019.

So, who and what is the Associated Registry? Associated Registry is a division of the American Hampshire Sheep Association that provides various services to 33 different associations. Most of these associations are sheep, but we do serve swine, goat, and cattle associations as well.

The office staff is made up of three full time employees and some part time employees. The last three summers we have had an intern for 10 weeks. Our workload is very seasonal and May through August are very busy for our office. To be honest there has been a learning curve as we get acquainted with the American Tarentaise Association processes for registry work. Even though I have been around registered livestock my entire life, the complete herd reporting was totally new to me. That coupled with the using of the current ATA registry system instead of our own registry system that is used by all our other clients has been a learning process as well. We have enjoyed visiting with the ATA members and appreciate the cooperation as we work through this first year.
