BULLS
Ficken Angus Farms
Ficken Angus Far ms John Ficken Famil y Ficken Angus Farms was started in 1940 by my parents. That herd was dispersed in 1968 due to drought. My wife and I started a new herd in 1972 with three cows from the Green Garden herd at Ellsworth, KS. Two more cows were added the next year from Willard Ericson at Marquette, KS. From that meager start we applied our philosophy to breeding Angus cattle. Our three children showed cattle and were involved with the operation until they were out of high school, except our youngest son, Lance, who maintained a small group of cows. He and his wife have now become major partners in the operation. Our ideas of how cattle should perform have not changed from the beginning. Cattle exist to produce meat; that is the goal. We expect our cattle to be better than average in the major EPDs and dollar traits. We have never bred for extremes in any one trait, and our herd has always been selected for calving ease, structural soundness, good udders, and carcass quality. Our mission to produce cattle that the commercial cattleman can make a profit at any level they choose to sell, and the buyers will want those cattle again. That goal is an ever moving target; we are getting closer to the bulls-eye every calf crop.

Selecting bulls can be a stressful job, but very important to a cow herd profitability. The amount of information available today can be very confusing. Most buyers watch the birth weight and growth EPDs but many ignore the balance of the other EPDs. Ficken Angus put together a pen of steers in 2018 and 2019. Both pens included steers from three of our best customers and some of our own. The results were an education; not all good, but not all bad. We learned that simply two things will dictate the profitability of cattle at harvest time: weight and price. We all knew this, because that is how we sell our cattle. Both traits are controllable by the breeder of those cattle. Finished cattle need to be of a certain weight (900 pound carcass) and grade choice to

For Your Information... (Continued from page 3)
even come close to breaking even or show a profit. So to increase the chance to be profitable, a premium is needed. Marbling is the one trait that dictates that premium. Very simple. More marbling equals more dollars. How do you put more marbling into your next calf crop? Use bulls that have higher marbling EPDs. The other ingredient in our formula for profit is the weight. This is easy to do, maybe too easy. Using high growth bulls with larger mature size. But will create a problem of larger size, if you retain your heifers. The solution is to avoid the extremely high growth bulls, and watch the mature size EPDs. Right now you may be thinking to yourself, I don’t feed out my calves, so I can forget all this. WRONG.
Somebody is going to feed those calves and are expecting to make a profit. The only thing a buyer can do to increase those odds, is to pay the least amount for your calves. Now if a buyer has fed out a set of calves before, he knows how well they did or didn’t do. Next time he pays for those calves accordingly. Your job to add more value to your calf crop is to get this important information to the buyers. When selling calves furnish $B (dollar beef) of your herd bulls, feed out a sample of your calves and share the results, or you may have gotten feedback from previous calf sales. Make your calves worth more, add some valuable genetics for the future. Want more information or have questions, ask us at Ficken Angus. -5-

Schlegel Angus Ranch
BULLS
Schl egel Angus Ranch Der r ick Schl egel Schlegel Angus Ranch started in 2008 with females purchased from Ficken Angus and Lyons Ranch. Since then, I have added females from Dalebanks Angus, Mill Brae Ranch, Larson Angus Ranch, and Stevenson Diamond Dot. The main goal of my program is to produce cattle that are feed efficient, grow well, have excellent carcass quality, and can make a great cow. I maintain a strict 30-day heifer and 45-day cow breeding season. The cattle are AI’d one time and then the bulls are turned in. Any animal that is open is culled. I retain the top end of each bull crop to use as clean up on commercial cows owned by my family. We retain ownership in those cattle through the feedlot. Carcass and feedlot data on those cattle is available. Several of those top bulls are in this sale. My hope is that the bulls in this offering will be able to add value to your calf crop and cowherd, making you more profitable.

Our cow herd is primarily made up of retained heifers and a small embryo program from purchased donors. We focus on high maternal traits, strong growth, and moderate milk as well as keeping carcass traits in mind as we make breeding decisions. It is my hope and belief that you will like the cattle you see as you look through our offering. If there is anything we can do to assist you with your seedstock needs, please let me know.

BULLS The reluctance of many bull buyers to accept any birth weight above breed average (Birth EPD +1.4) has been seen now for several years. From a bull breeders stand point, it is hard to understand, why this persists. Birth EPD is determined by weight and shape (CD) The emphasis on actual shape seems to be ignored and weight over emphasized. We weigh all the calves at birth, so we know that there is a big difference between size and weight; not all calves of the same weight are the same size. An example would be two twenty pound packages. One package is six inches by six inches by fourteen inches, containing welding rod. The other packages are twelve inches by twenty-four inches by twenty-four inches, and contain a replacement seat cushion. Both weigh the same but the size is not the same.

WW Ratio 116. Dam BR 5 at 102, NR 5 at 108, Act. WW 765. You won’t miss him on sale day. He has done it all since birth. Pedigree performance and a truly powerful herd bull look, and his dam is an Angus Pathfi der cow.
- 13 -
Not all heavy calves are extra large; just like not all twenty pound packages are the same size. The Angus breed has basically zero calving problems in cows, no calves too big to deliver unassisted. Since we weigh all calves we see how much faster the eighty five and ninety pound calves grow and how much more muscle and power they exhibit. And they came unassisted; the cow has them with no problems. These cows are about the same size as most commercial cows and some are smaller. So a bull with an EPD of +2.5-+3.0 for birth is in real terms 2.5 to 3.0 pounds heavier at birth than that calf from a +0 EPD calving ease bull. Not all heavy calves are extra large; just like not all twenty pound packages are the same size After weighing calves at birth for forty plus years, we still can’t guess accurately what a calf will weigh. It is very doubtful that you can see the difference of two or three pounds. When you see a bull you like and are intending to breed cows; ask the people who bred and calved him about the size, we were there, and we will tell you the facts.

FEMALES
Low-birth-weight EPDs
Looking at a single trait on EPDs costs performance and money. By David Gazda Regional manager, American Angus Association
One of the most common concerns I hear from commercial producers using Angus genetics is the size of calves at birth. Instinctively, my first thought is that the producers experienced calving problems due to the calves being too large at birth. However, the problem generally tends to be just the opposite, where the calves have been extremely small and light at birth, struggled to nurse and never caught up with their contemporaries from a growth standpoint.
At the risk of being controversial, many of these small calf scenarios could be eliminated if the producers would simply be willing to accept more birth weight, particularly when breeding mature cows. One only has to attend a production or test station sale to witness firsthand how the heavier- birthweight-EPD bulls are penalized and therefore sell at a substantial discount. Have calving-ease and lowbirth-weight EPDs been overemphasized to commercial producers? Maybe; maybe not.
Upon visiting with the producer and reviewing the bull’s registration certificate and EPD profile, I usually discover a common theme – the producer had been selecting primarily for calving-ease, low-birthweight-EPD bulls with no regard to any other traits. This is certainly understandable if the producer is breeding heifers and needs a certain level of calving ease delivered by low-birth-weight Angus bulls. Furthermore, in the southeast, like many other areas of the country where cow herds are relatively small, the herd bull may have to be multipurpose, breeding both heifers and mature cows with, again, emphasis being placed on calving ease.
Regardless, the commercial producer equates Angus genetics with calving ease, fertility, maternal strength and carcass quality, and as seedstock producer we are challenged daily to deliver those genetics. In closing, producers need to select bulls that allow them to reach their production goals; however, single-trait selection based upon an individual’s birth weight EPD may needlessly sacrifice additional pounds at weaning. Next time you are in the market for a bull, don’t discriminate against a little more birth weight EPD. You will still receive the calving ease you have always expected from Angus and a few extra dollars in your pocket at weaning!
American Angus Association $Value Indexes
$Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has meaning only when used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. For example, just as with EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates average expected differences in the relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning performance compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Quality Grade ($QG) represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD, which is influenced by carcass marbling scores and ultrasound percent intramuscular fat (% IMF) measurements, contribute to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG) represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. Beef Value ($B): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of $F and $G.
$Values have meaning when used in comparing the relative merit or ranking of two individuals. For example, Bull X has a $B value of +26.00, and Bull Y has a $B value of +16.00. If these bulls were randomly mated to a comparable set of females and the calves were exposed to the same environment, on the average you would expect Bull X’s progeny to have a +10.00 dollar per head advantage in postweaning performance and carcass merit over Bull Y’s progeny (26.00 - 16.00 = +10.00 per head)
How to Use $Values $Values should be used to complement the criteria that producers already use when selecting bulls. Different management situations may require varying emphasis on the genetic selection “tools” offered. For instance, one producer might have historically sold calves at weaning, and rarely used the carcass EPDs in bull selection decisions. First he needs to meet his birth weight EPD/calving ease EPD requirements, depending on whether heifers are to be bred. Then selections can be made on Weaned Calf Value ($W) which characterizes revenue and costs associated with the preweaning phase. He would use $W to capture preweaning dollar differences when comparing two sires of interest. In addition, he may want to begin making general progress in improving end-product value to create more predictability in his calves, or he may choose to retain ownership in the future. In this case, the $B could be used in concert with the selection criteria he has used in the past, such as $W, to make directional change in postweaning and carcass merit.
The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait, as an index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools are the result of the application of industry-relevant market values to Angus genetics for preweaning, feedlot, and carcass merit. Keep in mind that selection for an individual trait may be an effective option for some producers. In this case, he might sell fed cattle and have significant carcass data on past groups of steers. This detailed data would allow him to identify the specific trait in need of improvement. In this case, $B might not be used where the individual end-product EPDs could better assist him in achieving the desired genetic change. The producer still has the opportunity to use $B as a tool in maintaining the balance between feedlot and carcass traits.
