Well to say the least, 2020 will be one that we remember! But we have also learned a lot in the past few months such as we can participate without being there in person and consumers want beef in their diet to the point that they will hoard it. As we all learn new ways of doing things, the end goal has never changed, as Dr. Don Good always reminded his Kansas State students, “We are producing food and fiber for mankind.” Sometimes in the midst of madness, we are well served to keep it simple. Speaking of simple, you will notice a new simplified format in the sale catalog. We may never try this again, but we decided to try it this time. We have found that many potential buyers get on the American Angus website and pull up bulls they are interested in, so the registration numbers are provided for your further study. We will have all the bulls videoed on our website and comments of each bull as usual. Buyers seem to really like this format. You can sit at home and not only see the bulls but hear an honest evaluation of each and every bull in the sale. We will also have groups of commercial females from bull customers as usual. These will be a really top cut of herd building, foundation future cows to build your program around. In addition to the commercial females, we will have a select group of eligible to register fall pairs available. We will sell these in small groups where you can select from the group or take the whole group. If you desire to have the registration papers, they will be available for an additional fee at settlement. We will have a supplement sheet on our website with the potential registered fall pairs as we get closer to the sale. As always, if you need assistance in any way, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Independence Municipal Airport is approximately 30 minutes from McCabe Genetics and we would gladly meet you there. Inspection Of The Cattle: Cattle may be seen at the ranch anytime before the sale.
Herd Health: The cow herd is annually vaccinated against, IBR, BVD, and P13. The females were vaccinated for Blackleg, IBR, BVD, P13 and Lepto. Cattle will be accompanied by proper health certificates as needed. Cattle sold into other states will begin any additional required health tests the week following the sale. All bulls selling are tested negative for BVD-PI, AM/NH/CA free. All 2 yr. old bulls have been Trich tested and the rest of the bulls sell under the Kansas Herd Management Plan. McCabe Genetics Breeding Guarantee The bulls that sell are fertile to the best of our knowledge and are backed by a first breeding season guarantee. If, while breeding cows, they sustain injury to their reproductive system, making them unable to service females we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or issue you credit equal to your purchase minus salvage value that may be used toward the purchase of any animal for sale at McCabe Genetics through our annual sale or private treaty. We request that you notify us before you cull the injured or infertile bull. This is not a life insurance policy against death or disasters and does not cover health problems or injury due to mismanagement, negligence, or risks you choose to take (running bulls together can cause bull fights and injury). All bulls have passed a semen examination performed by the Shnurman Sire Service located at Martensdale, Iowa.

Interest Retained in Bulls
We are retaining 1/3 semen revenue sharing interest in all of the bulls. The buyer will be purchasing two-thirds interest and full possession of the bull. This means we are reserving the right to one-third of the semen sales revenue from the bull if at sometime in the future semen sales become a reality. We also reserve the right to collect semen on the bull for our own inherd use if we choose to at some time in the future. If you sell the bull to some other party we still retain one-third interest. You will have control of the bull and receive 100% of the salvage value whenever that occurs.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth EPD - expressed in pounds, is the difference between average progeny birth weights for sires. Birth weight cannot be used to predict actual birth weights due to maternal differences and differences in environment. Experience has taught us that the use of sires with lower birth weight EPD’s can reduce the risk of calving difficulty. Weaning Wt. Direct EPD - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sires ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. Milk EPD - is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. Yearling Wt. EPD - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny. Docility (DOC) EPD - is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Registerable Females
Here is a unique opportunity for everyone. We are offering a select set of females out of the heart of our fall calving herd. These cows have proven themselves over the years and now we are going to offer some of them. These cows will sell in groups of 3 to 5 but the winning bidder has the option to take 1 or more. They will be on display sale day as well as having videos of the small groups of females online. We will have a sheet with the female information on it as we get close to sale time. These cows and calves have the option for $350 additional to the bid price to have the registration papers and the calves DNAed to the new buyer.
Commercial Females
As we have done in years past, we have an outstanding set of commercial females available. These young cows and heifers have their whole lives ahead and we are extremely excited about them. They will sell on video and a representative sample of a few of the females will be on display. We would encourage you to call the consigners and discuss with them about the offerings and they would be glad for you to come by and take a look. The females will be available for pickup starting on November 5th.
Fall Pairs
Pickett Ranch, Greg Pickett, Longton, KS. 620-332-3743 40 head 2 year old fall pairs. These will be black and black baldy heifers with black and black baldy calves at side. Many would qualify as F1’s. These pairs speak for themselves and are sought after by repeat buyers each year. These heifers were bred AI and started calving early September. These females would have several generations of McCabe influence and nobody does it better than the Pickett Ranch. Jacot Ranch, John Jacot, Moline, KS 620-332-9597 21 2-year-old fall pairs. These really nice black 2 year olds have their whole productive life ahead of them and will have calves at side sired by a McCabe Genetics Angus bull. John is a longtime rancher and knows the business as well as anyone out there.
Spring Bred Heifers
David Jones Elk City, KS 620-926-0002 50 head Black/Black Baldy bred heifers to start calving early February for 90 days to McCabe Genetics low birth weight bulls. David purchased these as open heifers from McCabe customer Terry Evans and through the McCabe spring sale. They are pelvic measured, BDV-PI negative, and OCVed. David is fairly new to the business, but gets it done right as well as anyone. Holst Land and Cattle, Gary Holst, Thayer, KS 913-626-6969 20 Black bred heifers sired by McCabe bulls and bred to low birth weight McCabe Hereford bulls starting to calve February 7 for 58 days. These Hereford bulls range from 7.1 to 9.8 CED with a 2.7 CED normally considered acceptable for virgin heifers. They have been tested for Neospora, PI BVD, and were pelvic measured. Gary and his crew do a fair amount of artificial insemination work and these heifers were synchronized and AIed before they turned the bulls out. McCabe Genetics 620-332-4244, 620-636-0545, 620-332-4498 24 head of Black bred heifers sired by McCabe Genetics bulls and bred to low birth weight McCabe Genetics bulls to start calving mid-January for 65 days. They have been pelvic measured and have had a complete vaccination program. These heifers are located in the Springfield, MO area, have been on fescue their whole life, and are in extremely good shape. McCabe Genetics will pay the freight back to Elk City, KS. There heifers were purchased from McCabe bull customers, Kenneth and Stephan Walker at Moline, and Shawn Shabel at Independence, KS. They are pelvic measured, BDV-PI negative, and OCVed. They are a top cut from two really strong programs.
Open Heifers
Heritage Farms of Kansas, Joe Newland, 620-332-7522, Justin Newland, 620-779-2099 15 Head of Black open heifers ready to breed. They will be heavily influenced by McCabe Bulls. They have had two rounds of shots and will weigh about 825 lbs. The Newlands do a great job and these heifers will pay dividends for years down the road.
