We just want to thank you for taking the time to study this year’s offering and sale catalog. We are extremely proud of this set of bulls and the genetic value that they represent. Our family, can not adequately express how grateful, how humbled and how blessed we are to have you all as customers and friends. To our past customers we thank you for investing the MCC program and those new customers we look forward to building relationships with you. If you have not been to our bull sale in the past, one of the first things you will notice is that we do not develop our bulls like most operations. They are not developed to express all their genetic differences or to look their best on sale day, they are developed for longevity and to last. We have quite a few new and exciting sire groups to choose from this year, but our breeding focus remains the same. Our philosophy always has been to produce the cattle that will make money, avoid problems, and position our customers for the future. Our ad campaign last year was centered around respecting the female and that is the core of our program. We love explosive early growth, carcass merit, and the like, but we also believe that can be achieved while keeping mature size, milk, udder quality, fleshing ability, structural correctness and feet structure in the better than good category. Our ads this year centered around not leaving you hanging, and the value of a disciplined breeding program that avoids the ups and downs and extremes that comes from one trait selection and chasing fads. I think they do a great job of illustrating what truly makes MCC genetics different. In addition to the SuperMama philosophy that guides our program we utilize the $W, $M, $B, and $C indexes, but recognize that the top priority is producing functional problem free cattle. Videos of all the bulls will be available prior to the sale. Please take a look at our offering make the comparisons, and you will see our bulls don’t cost money, they are an investment in your future profitability. Calving Ease Designation Calving ease is a primary focus of our breeding program. With nearly ¾ of our bulls in the sale qualifying as heifer bulls according to Angus Association guidelines, we wanted to provide our rating system, based on actual data, pedigree, EPDs and experience. **** A no miss, sleep through the night, and tag live calves in the morning type of bull. *** Superior calving ease, should be an excellent choice for heifers ** A bull that qualifies as a heifer bull by industry standards. * We recommend these bulls for use on cows.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (REA), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Percentile Rank This percentage tells you where the bull ranks against all other non-parents bulls in the breed for the given trait. 10% means the bull would rank among the top 10% of all non-parent bulls.

Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Docility EPD (DOC), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Maternal EPD (CEM), is expressed as a predictor of how easily a sire’s daughters will calve. Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

American Angus Association $Value Indexes

Dollar value indexes, or $Values, are a tool used to select for several traits at once based on a specific breeding objective. An economic index approach takes into account genetic and economic values as well as the relationships between traits to select for profit. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with todayâ€™s production. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. $W assumes that producers retain 20% of their female progeny for replacements and sell the rest of their cull female and male progeny as feeder calves. Over time, increased selection pressure on $W will increase weaning and maternal milk traits while also continuing to increase mature cow size. Cow Energy Value ($EN), an index expressed in dollars per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in future daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing $EN savings differences include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Grid Value ($G), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, facilitates simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit. $B represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.

The Marshall All-Purpose (MAP) economic index ranks Angus seedstock for combined genetic merit across evaluated maternal, growth and carcass traits. MAP was constructed and customized for MCC by Zoetis, and is intended to help simplify bull buying and complement commercial cow-calf producer use of GeneMax Advantage for replacement heifer decisions. The specific traits included in the MAP index are listed below, with 51% emphasis on listed maternal traits, 34% on growth and feed intake, and 15% on carcass traits. Since over 15 traits are directly or indirectly included in MAP, there are many ways for animals to achieve similar scores. As such, breeders are encouraged to also evaluate animals on component traits that are important to their individual goals. Benchmark percent ranks associated with MAP index values are provided below. In conclusion, MAP predictions more thoroughly rank animals and simplify multiple trait genetic advancement for MCC customers.

GENOMIC TESTING & GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS The cattle in the sale display a symbol of DNA testing I50K on the pedigree. Those animals’ EPDs are GE-EPDs, meaning the have had a genomic test performed on a DNA sample from that animal which provides additional information used in calculation of their EPDs. American Angus Association Genomic Enhanced EPDs Genomic results are a way to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the animal’s own performance for the trait, such as carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls. With the investment in the genomic technology, this means that in addition results have also been incorporated into the EPD. Genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) are important because they make use of the results from the DNA test in addition to all other sources of information to provide added accuracy and reliability to the animal’s EPD (Figure 1). In fact, depending on the trait, GE-EPDs on unproved animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired 8-33 calves. Phenotypic measures collected by Angus breeders, such as birth, weaning, and yearling weights, ultrasound scan data, etc., continue to be an important part in further development of improved genomic panels, not to mention an important component in EPD calculation.

A DISCUSSION ABOUT CALVING EASE The Angus breed is a leader for calving ease and our breed has done a phenomenal job of identifying curve benders that defy the genetic antagonisms between calving ease and growth. Calving ease is a non-negotiable component of our breeding program. Everything begins with a live calf. This summer, the American Angus Association implemented a new, more robust, and more accurate genetic model. With that change, we need re-evaluate how we interpret CE EPDs. The chart below illustrates the percent of assisted births at different CE EPDs. Each producer should decide for themselves what best fits their operation and goals. We feel very comfortable using 8 CED or higher bulls on any heifers and 6 and 7 CED bulls on well developed heifers.

We used the Full Force bull because he excelled on our MAP index, we have been blown away by the phenotype. This is an outcross bull out of our donor cow, 2306 who boasts a 111 weaning and 108 yearling average progeny ratios. The granddam is still in production at 13 years of age, and has produced three donor cows for us and whose progeny ratios are equally impressive at 113 and 107. This bull has lots of muscle expression is great footed and correct. Just look at his indexes across the board, growth, maternal and carcass -- $300 for $C. Not many do that, and even fewer in this type of package.

Wyatt is home helping us this spring, finishing a few classes online with a plan to migrate south in May. Justis is in Washington DC interning for Senator Cory Gardner and taking online classes at OSU. Wynn is the only one on a college campus this semester. She works for the OSU Foundation in donor relations, is interning with an investment management firm in OKC, and will be headed to intern for American Farm Bureau in DC this summer.

We love Angus cattle and believe they will always be the foundation of the commercial cow/calf industry. We also understand that hybrid vigor or heterosis can be a powerful tool that contributes to the profitability of our customers. Our Sim/Angus program is still relatively limited in size, but like our Angus program it will be growing. Using a composite bull is the easy way to take advantage of breed complementarity and maintain heterosis. So why SimAngus? We believe in using the best tools available to breed better cattle, and currently the American Angus Association and the American Simmental Association have the two largest databases in the world, with the most animals and the most traits evaluated. Angus excels in terms of calving ease, low birth weights, post weaning gain and carcass merit. Among the Continental breeds Simmental enjoys nearly an identical status.

Crossbreeding works. Traditional crossbreeding programs, however, have largely been colossal failures.
