KAA to Award Scholarship to Young Angus Producer

Dues must be current for membership listing in the 2021 Kansas Angus Directory

Application deadline is January 2, 2021 The Kansas Angus Association board of directors are excited to announce that the KAA will award a $500 scholarship to one young college-age Kansas Angus producer. The scholarship winner will be announced during the KAA annual banquet on January 30, 2021 in Hutchinson. . The application deadline is January 2 applicants will be required to submit an online application and essay. The application is posted on www.kansasangus.org. Eligibility: 1. Applicants must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year college or technical school for the spring 2021 semester, proof of enrollment required. 2. Applicant’s parents , grandparents or family farm/ranch must be member’s of the Kansas Angus Association.3. Applicant must be currently involved in producing Angus cattle or actively involved in their family's Angus operation. 4. Previous winners are not eligible to apply or win.

The President's Pen Dear Fellow Angus Enthusiasts, Again, like the spring it seems roles have reversed and we are now weaning spring calves and calving fall cows and seeing the fruits of our labor! As we take weights and evaluate the sire groups, new and old, I catch myself studying the performance of the calf and the job the cow did to make culling and thus breeding/mating thoughts of the upcoming season! As time and labor become our most valuable resource, I hope that each of you take the time to enjoy the opportunity to BE an Angus breeder and step back and look at all you have accomplished and digest the chance we have been given to make the most of The Business Breed.

Angus sales have been very strong to excellent and exciting! I encourage each of you state wide to look forward and mark your calendar for December as the KAA and Chairman Gordon Stucky bring you another edition of the Commercial Angus Female Sale in Pratt. This also means that we as an association will be closing in on another year completed from a business standpoint, and from that regard we are doing well.

I look forward to seeing many of you that I haven’t been able to see in this year of pandemic and craziness! Would like to invite and encourage Angus enthusiasts of all kinds to come KC to take part in the Annual Convention in November!

Also, Anne is planning the KS Angus Assoc. annual meeting and banquet for January 30 in Hutchinson (hopefully), Thank you to her for her hard work and all the planning that she has done playing chess with all the codes and guidelines that have been put in front of us have acted like road blocks to pull this event off!

And as I close I know that I don’t need to remind any of you, but heard on the radio this morning that we are halfway through October, that this is the second driest on record so far- therefore I ask that we all PRAY FOR RAIN!

The strategy shows great promise and as a result, the Association and AGI have been researching haplotypes that can affect the fertility in Angus cattle. The “Focus on Fertility” panel will include Kent Weigel, professor and chair of the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences at University of Wisconsin-Madison; Tom Lawlor, executive director of research and development at the Holstein Association, USA; and Kelli Retallick, director of genetic and genomic programs for Angus Genetics Inc. The second panel discussion will be centered around the Angus cow and longevity initiatives. In an effort to establish a longevity EPD, a fully optional, easier to use, inventory-based AHIR program is being introduced to collect necessary data. Participants can learn how you can use this whole herd reporting option to complement the MaternalPlus program in the “Focus on Longevity” discussion presented

The Kansas Angus Association is proud to sponsor the 29h Commercial Angus Female Sale in Pratt. We are in search of high quality, young age pairs, fall bred cows , bred heifers and open heifers to offer at this sale. If you are interested in consigning cattle to this sale, please complete the attached entry form and mail to the address shown at the bottom of the form or submit online at www.kansasangus.org Using this form, an information handout will be compiled on all consignments which will be available to buyers on sale day and will be mailed on request. We will also be advertising the sale consignments in farm publications throughout the area on Angus internet emails. In order to advertise your consignments and compile and sale list handout and mailer, we ask that you return the completed form by November 23, 2020The earlier we receive your entry , the better we can generate interest in your cattle.

Consignment Criteria and Delivery Times The sale welcomes fall pairs, bred cows and heifers to calve in the spring of 2021 and open heifers . To insure the quality of this special sale, we have made the following guidelines.

1.

Females must meet Certified Angus Beef ®live specifications: be predominately black hided (black white faces and/or “baldies” are accepted).

2.

Females must have typical beef-type conformation (no visible dairy influence); and be without long floppy ear and hump (no visible Brahman influence).

3.

Maximum age—No older than 7 years-old. Minimum consignment of five head.

4.

All females must be pregnancy checked (except open heifers) within 30 days of the sale. Pregnancy checking is the responsibility of the consignor. An official health paper from a veterinarian must accompany cattle, complete with pregnancy check results within 30 days of the sale. Cattle may be pregnancy checked by Pratt Livestock by request only, by calling Pratt Livestock at (620) 672-5961. Preg check fee $5.35/head. Open females will sell guaranteed by the seller to be open.

Cattle must be at Pratt Livestock by 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 or by 10 am if Pratt will be pregnancy checking bred females. This will give buyers a chance to see your cattle.

Selling Fees Commission will be regular Pratt Livestock fees plus 1.5% of selling price to Kansas Angus Association to cover special sale promotion. Pratt Livestock commission per head is $28 bred cows and heifers, $40 cow/calf pairs and $20 open heifers. Other selling fees include: Yardage $2.00, Hay $.32animal cwt., Health inspection $.35, and Insurance $.0019/$ animal value No sale fee $20. Pellets are available on request for $.24/lb.

Kansas Junior Angus Association KJAA Members, Happy holidays to everyone! Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are just around the corner. Let your holidays be filled with fun, laughter, and family. Halloween has always been a fun holiday for me ever since I was a little kid. For the first ten years of my life, I went as the same thing every Halloween, a cowboy. I grew up watching westerns and it was always my first choice to go for Halloween every year.

As I grew older, I began to pass out candy to younger kids and it was always fun to see what they dressed up for every year.

Thanksgiving has always been fun for me as it is a family event. Everyone in my family works together to create a meal on Thanksgiving day. Turkey is never served on our table, beef has always been the first choice. I remember being little and always asking my mom why we never ate turkey on Thanksgiving day, her response was always the same, “Why would we eat turkey when we have beef?” It is a fun time for us and we always eat too much.

My favorite holiday is Christmas and not because of the presents under the tree. I love that time of year and what Christmas represents. The birth of Christ is truly special and every year on Christmas Eve we attend a candlelight service at our church. God has always been a big part of my life and with the birth of Jesus and what he represents is truly meaningful to me. Each day I work to appreciate the blessings He has allowed me to have in life. While attending school at Oklahoma State University my roommates and I try to attend a Sunday service together.

Gardiner Angus Ranch Bull Sale

Our Angus Family Nelson Loyd Hager, 47, passed away suddenly on May 1, 2020, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born on July 11, 1972, to Norman and Phyllis Hager, in O’Keene, Oklahoma, but spent much of his life in Kansas, graduating from Kansas State University with a degree in Agricultural Science.

Nelson’s passion in life were his wife and son, and secondly, the livestock business. He grew up showing sheep, cattle and hogs in FFA, 4-H, and the Kansas Junior Angus Association, where he served as Junior Director two times. He won many awards, and after his show career ended he continued to be active in the KJAA by mentoring many kids with his drive and passion. In 2020, he was awarded National Advisor of the year, at the National Junior Angus show in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He worked diligently to provide selfconfidence, self-worth, and perseverance to many junior boys and girls. To those that he mentored, he was more than a teacher, he was a friend, and a second dad. He will be dearly missed by all.

Nelson is survived by his wife Rachel Hager, his son, Aiden Hager, both of Great Bend, Kansas; his parents, Phyllis Hager of Stafford, Kansas; his father, Norman Hager, of Alva, Oklahoma; a brother, Tony Hager and wife Susan of Hutchinson, Kansas; a sister, Tammy and Vanessa Rios-Hager of Houston, Texas; a nephew, Ethan Hager of Hutchison, Kansas; and a niece, Jennifer Rutan and husband Lance, and their son, Colt, also of Hutchison, Kansas.

Angus Champions Parade at Kansas State Fair ROV Angus Show Angus exhibitors led 111 entries at the 2020 Kansas State Fair Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show, September 19 in Hutchinson, Kan. Jim Pipkin, Republic, Mo., evaluated the 82 females, 26 bulls and three cow-calf pairs.

Rowdi Van Zee, Sioux City, Iowa, led the grand champion female. Hoffman Peg 9482 is a January 2019 daughter of Plum Creek Refresh 561A and first topped the junior division. Duck River Erica 953 claimed reserve grand champion female and senior calf champion. Beau Rowlett, Hurricane Mills, Tenn., owns the November 2019 daughter of S A V Renown 3439.

Every year the CAB Cook-Off is one of the most highly anticipated contests held at the National Junior Angus Show. Even though the contest could not be held in person, the American Angus Auxiliary didn’t give up. The original Cook-Off was held to encourage the use of the CAB in dishes created by junior Angus members. This year, the virtual contest hosted nine teams consisting of NJAA members ranging from ages 8 to 21. Teams were required to submit a 10minute video that was informative, factual, entertaining, and promoted a CAB dish to consumers and home cooks.

Annual cook-off contest goes virtual but maintained the goal of encouraging junior Angus members to promote Certified Angus Beef ®.

No matter the challenge or situation, the American Angus Auxiliary has remained committed to encouraging junior Angus members to keep learning about and cooking with the Certified Angus Beef ® brand (CAB). To adapt to restrictions and recommendations set during the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual CAB Cook–Off contest was hosted online. This year, rather than the typical contest held at the National Junior Angus Show, contestants were tasked with producing a video presentation, inviting consumers to their ranch, farm, home, table, kitchen or backyard grill to tell the CAB story.

The contest was judged by a panel of CAB chefs, Chef Michael Ollier, Chef Ashley Breneman and Bryan Schaaf, Chef Liaison. The judges evaluated each entry on criteria including video creativity, the message of the Certified Angus Beef Ò brand, the recipe and appearance of the dish and the overall effect of the video. Nine teams participated from all corners of the United States.

After the success of the contest, Lampe says the new virtual format has opened the potential for more juniors to participate from across the country in the coming years. “We have so many more juniors from across the United States that I think we can reach with online contests,” Lampe said. “The Auxiliary looks forward to possibly add this contest in the future, in addition to the traditional contest held annually at NJAS The CAB at Home Cook-Off Contest is an opportunity for all juniors to be involved in the activities without actually having to take part in the in-person contest the week of NJAS. This opportunity is educational and fun for all juniors involved and will continue to be a favorite competition.

Theis (continued from page 1) While growing up, Jerry was very active in the daily operations of the farm, but always had a special interest in the Angus herd. He was involved with 4-H and youth livestock shows as an exhibitor of Angus cattle and swine. He graduated as a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. After graduation he returned home to the local veterinary clinic in order to stay active in the family operation. In addition to a mixed-animal practice, he is involved every day with the activities of the family operation. He has told many people he considers himself an Angus breeder with a DVM. Jerry’s board candidacy is endorsed by the Kansas Angus Association.

He has been very active in the Kansas Angus Association, serving two terms on the board and serving as president in 2010. He served on the American Angus Association Credentials Committee for 10 years and has been a voting delegate at the annual convention for many years. He and his wife, Tonya, are currently in their second term serving as Kansas Junior Angus Association Advisors. Together, they have been community leaders of the Happy Hollow 4-H Club for 18 years and actively involved in the Leavenworth County 4-H Events Council for numerous years. Jerry was on the Leavenworth County Extension Council for four years and served as president for three of those years. He currently is actively involved with the Leavenworth County Livestock Committee and has served on the Leavenworth County Beef Improvement Association Board of Directors.

NJAA activities, including LEAD and Raising the Bar. If elected, Jerry will always keep the best interest of the American Angus Association membership a top priority. He will be accessible to the membership, with an open ear and an open mind. He feels membership input is very valuable, regardless of herd size. He is an independent thinker who will take every decision seriously and will work to make informed decisions. He welcomes the opportunity to meet everyone and answer any questions. Jerry greatly appreciates your support and welcomes the opportunity to serve the members of the American Angus Association.

About the election and American angus Association annul meeting and convention of delegates: Considering the current gathering restrictions created by COVID-19, modifications were necessary to balance the health of attendees and the need to conduct the business of the Association. The event will be a two-day meeting on Nov. 8-9 and will continue the long tradition of holding an annual meeting of delegates that has occurred since the inception of the Association in 1883. The National Angus Tour, and trade show portion of the event have been canceled and the number of educational sessions will be reduced but virtual options for members and attendees will be offered.

The American Angus Association Board of Directors candidate forum and state caucuses will proceed as scheduled and will be webcast for those not in attendance. The 137th Convention of Delegates will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 9. If members are unable to attend in person, they can attend virtually, and voting delegates will have a virtual participation option.

Dalebanks Angus Earns CAB Seedstock Honors

by Miranda Reiman Doing right by their customers means raising the best cattle they can. For the Perrier family of Eureka, Kansas, that’s a philosophy, business model and family code all wrapped into one.

Matt, Amy and their children, along with his parents Tom and Carolyn Perrier operate Dalebanks Angus. The designation traces back to ancestors who kept a bit of their English heritage alive with their farm name when they settled the Kansas plains.

“Our breeding philosophies are generations deep,” Matt Perrier says. His great-grandpa saw these “unique” cattle at the American Royal in 1903, and brought the first Angus to their ranch the next year. Then his grandpa crafted a simple phrase, which the family has further distilled to the tagline for their whole program: “Practical, profitable genetics.”

The Perriers say strength in their customers’ bottom line means strength in their own, and profitability has to happen at every step along the beef chain.

Dalebanks Angus recently earned the 2020 Seedstock Commitment to Excellence Award from the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand.

Always improving As a boy, Perrier remembers concerns with lower beef demand and a fledgling high-quality Angus beef brand. Anyone who thought CAB was a real target?

“They got laughed at,” he says. “When I see that logo, I see folks who believed there was a reason to breed cattle that met consumers’ demand. I see folks who shrugged their shoulders and said, ‘I don’t care that the rest of the industry is telling us to go the exact opposite way.’”

Yet, it took an entire shift in the industry before it made sense to everyone.

“We needed a way for cattle—that were more desirable for our consumer—to get rewarded for that kind of production. It wasn’t happening in the ’80s and early ’90s,” his father says. “Now it has accomplished what it set out to do…and I’m glad that we’ve been a little part of that.”

It’s one of the reasons his son carries on the tradition of keeping cattle consistent, moderate in size and balanced for all traits, while making improvements on multiple fronts.

“We know we could breed cattle that are fancier, but we also know through the centuries, our customers have looked to us, not just for prettier cattle or cattle that excel in one trait, but that are profitable for them,” Perrier says.

The sale book is full of cattle that bear the Targeting the Brand logo, signifying bulls with a higher likelihood of siring calves that reach 50% CAB brand acceptance or better. The 2019 book featured 109 bulls with the mark, or 73% of their offering.

“Hopefully that proves, even though we breed for bulls and females that are of exceptional maternal value, we’re making simultaneous improvement in both of those areas,” he says.

Perrier spent seven years as a Regional Manager and later Director of Commercial Programs for the American Angus Association and Tom served on the board in the ’80s—they both know programs only work with participants and advancements in breed only happen when the data informs tools.

“We still have to recognize that Mother Nature and the environment we’re in is either a pretty powerful ally or enemy,” Perrier says. “If we try to use technology and overcome her completely and feed our way out of ‘problem cattle’ to cover up an issue in the genetics that should have been allowed to show, then we get ourselves in trouble.”

So he’s honest with himself and the cattle are honest with him. They learn to walk to water and travel on the rocks and hills, or they don’t stay.

But the family that came back to the ranch? They’re here for the long haul. “I watched my mom and dad fight through the ’80s and keep the thing together. I heard stories about my grandmother and others in the family keeping it together though the Depression and a couple of world wars and everything else,” Perrier says. “There was a certain amount of duty that I felt, that I had to make sure it didn’t end with my generation.” Ava was a baby when they made the move back home. Now 17, she’s a big help on the ranch, along with her siblings Lyle (14), Hannah (11), Henry (9) and Hope (1½).

There’s plenty of opportunities for teaching and observing, both technical skill and the value of hard work. It’s proven a great place to learn about life.

“We try to be constant learners and get better every day in whatever we’re doing. With our faith, with our sports and activities, with our school and learning and with our work around here,” Perrier says. “We try to make ourselves and those around us better every day.”

CAB recognized its 2020 honorees at the brand’s virtual annual conference on September 23 and 24.
