ON THE COVER

The Cover Ad features Rincker Land and Livestock. Jamie and Dusty Rincker are from Stewardson, Illinois and the sons of the late Darrell and late Paula Rincker. They have a longstanding reputation in the sheep industry especially with the Cheviot breed. The original Cheviot Flock was acquired from Paul Yakey in 1979. Dusty, his wife Claudia and son Kingston carry on the family Cheviot legacy and farm. Jamie, his wife Sarina and children Ellis and Paul reside in St. Johns, Michigan and run Rincker Southdowns and Rincker Ag Solutions. We are fortunate to have Katelyn and Claire VonBerhens , daughters of our late cousin Gruen VonBerhens, exhibit our sheep for us. The cover features Dusty’s Undefeated Cheviot Flock. The flock is all sired by Rincker Rams. The yearling ram is Black Acre 1617 and he was selected Champion Ram at Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky state fairs, Supreme Ram at Big E and Reserve Champion Keystone. The yearling ewe is Breezeview 3655 “Beulla Ballbreaker” and she was Champion at Illinois, Kentucky, BIG E and Reserve Champion at Keystone. The pair of ewe lambs has been first pair of ewe lambs at 5 state fairs. Be sure to come visit Ricker Land and Livestock at NAILE. Welcome!

> LETTER

FROM THE EDITOR

Wow! I can’t believe when you read this, it means the first issue of Ringside is no longer just an idea and dinner table conversation but a real thing. Cruz, Sarah and myself have been dreaming and talking about doing more to help promote an industry that means so much to them for quite some time. While Sarah and I were walking around Farm Progress Show in August we were casually chatting about how they needed new opportunities to market their flock. I turned to her and said, why don’t we quit talking about it and just do it. I called Cruz on my way home and said are you on board and he said if you believe in it then so do I. And we went from there to here. We hope that Ringside will provide a little something for everyone no matter how you are affiliated with the industry or what age you are. Our goal is to be a one stop outlet for all things sheep from the show ring to the lambing jug. We also want to provide the future of the industry with great opportunities that can help develop their skill sets, by allowing them to create a lot of our content. I am excited to see what new things each issue brings as we dive deeper and deeper into our BIG ideas. We are proud to offer free suscriptions with hopes that means everyone that wants the magazine has an opportunity to receive it. If you have ideas of something you would like to see or would like to contribute to a future magazine, please reach out to ringsidesheep@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you. I probably should have started with this, but in case you don’t know me, I am Sarah’s sister, and while most of the time you will find me in the cattle barn instead of the sheep barn, I have a passion for the agriculture industry and helping those in it be successful in all they do. I am the owner and creative behind Emily Adcock Photography and Design. I look forward to getting to know more and work with all of you and create this new marketing outlet. Enough chat, turn the pages to read all the great articles and review your fellow breeders flocks. Come see us in the Nichols Sheep Farm pens at NAILE! I would love to meet you. We will have copies of the magazine with us so send your friends to pick up their own! Thank you for joining us Ringside!

>LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to our first issue of Ringside! I have been involved in the sheep industry my whole life and like to think I am always thinking outside the box and what I can do next to improve. My newest idea was this magazine to give people another avenue to advertise their sheep. After talking with my sister-in-law, we decided between the two of us we could make it work. We decided I could handle the sales as I will talk to just about anyone in the sheep barn and Emily would handle the designing. I want this magazine to advertise fitted, slick, and wether type sheep. We will be sending out six issues within the next year. The January issue we are hoping to highlight all the NAILE successes and any other fall and winter shows. Our February issue we are going to target our club lamb breeders and their successes and upcoming sales. If you are interested in being involved in any of the upcoming issues talk to me at NAILE or reach out to me sometime in the near future. If you know me you know I love to talk sheep anytime with anyone. We are all really excited about this venture and hope that you too enjoy it! We are currently taking ads for our January 2020 and February (Club Lamb Special Edition) 2020 issues. I would be delighted to work with you to reserve your space. Thanks for joining us Ringside!

Junior Spotlight:

Beau Mumm

W

ith over eight years of being a member of both the American Hampshire Association and American Junior Hampshire Sheep Association, Beau Mumm has found success within their junior programs and the sheep industry. Beau is the 16-year-old son of Jason and Megan Mumm of White Heath, IL. The Mumm Family is no stranger to the sheep industry with 66 years of raising Hampshires. Beau is the 3rd generation to carry on the family legacy. Although the family’s main focus is on the Hampshire’s, you can also find them in the Tunis, Oxford, and Cheviot showrings. With their multibreed flock, the Mumm’s have made their presence known both ringside and as reputable breeders. It is safe to say that showing sheep runs in Beau’s blood, thus he started showing alongside his parents at a very young age. “I really did not have a choice whether I wanted to start showing sheep or not,” Beau recalled, “I have been showing ever since I can remember.” In fact, his parents met through showing sheep at numerous county fairs across Illinois. Additionally, his brother Luke (11) and sister Emmalou (4) partake in the family affair as well. Beau states, “it’s something that we do as a family and we truly

10 | Ringside

enjoy it. Everyone in our family has a job to make sure everything on the farm runs smoothly. The same thing goes for show day, we all have a role that is necessary to get the job done.” For Beau, family and sheep are what he enjoys most about showing. “My favorite part of showing is enjoying it with my friends and family. We have a lot of fun doing this together and it brings us all closer. I also love interacting with the sheep, they each have their own personality and I enjoy working with them. I tend to bond with them well which makes it more fun to show them and work with them at home.” Since the Mumm family raises multiple breeds of sheep, they have a lot of experience knowing the pros and cons of each breed. In Beau’s opinion, it is hard to pick a favorite between the Hampshires and Tunis. Although the Hampshires are what Beau has always known and loved, he recently decided to add a breed to call his own. He purchased his first Tunis ewe “Turnip” at the Illini All Breeds Sale in 2017. Beau states, “I had wanted a breed that I could call my own and become my responsibility. Plus, I had always admired Tunis for their calm personality.” Turnip was the start of a great journey as his Tunis flock has now grown to twenty-five ewes since 2017. Beau has had great success with his Tunis at various shows, some of his top honors including winning Champion Ram at both the Illinois State Fair in 2019 and Indiana State Fair in 2018. Although Beau exhibits at numerous shows at the local, state, and national level, his favorite show is the All-American Junior Show. Each year the All-American rotates where it is hosted, making that Beau’s favorite part. “I love traveling to other states to see how different the sheep are and

what the atmosphere is like,” Beau recalled as he reflected on his first time exhibiting at the AllAmerican in 2010. Beau’s dad, Jason, showed in the very first All-American 26 years ago. Beau’s favorite All-American to date was in Delaware, “it was interesting to see the ocean and the east side of the country and I had never been that far away from home” Beau has had great success in the showring, but his biggest individual accomplishment is winning the 2019 Illinois State FFA Sheep Proficiency Award. Beau’s success came from keeping accurate, detailed records on his flock throughout the year and competing with his SAE record book at many levels. Additionally, there is an interview section led by industry leaders and fellow agriculture instructors to further test his knowledge on his project and FFA. Making this is one of the highest recognitions one can achieve in FFA! Beau is a part of the Monticello FFA Chapter where he currently is serving as the Sentinel. Aside from his FFA leadership responsibilities, he also competes on the soils, livestock judging, and ag mechanic teams. When Beau is not in the barn working with his sheep or in the agriculture classroom, you will still find him outdoors. He enjoys mowing, helping his dad with their family’s grain operation, and playing with his little sister. Yet his greatest enjoyment during his free-time is restoring antique Farmall tractors

with his dad. Beau Mumm has set quite the stage for himself in the sheep industry. We are truly honored to have him as our first Junior Spotlight here at Ringside! We look forward to seeing his future success as an exhibitor and individual. Beau’s advice for other exhibitors, “First and foremost, have fun! Do not take showing too seriously. Yes, we are all here in hopes to win but at the end of the day if we are not enjoying what we are doing, then we are not doing it right.” *Photos provided by the Mumm Family

Girl Crouch o r n e r

Morgan, Delaney and Taylor Crouch of Crouch Dorsets share their secrets for show ring success!

Working long hours is nothing new to the "us" in the Sheep Industry. We are going to touch on a couple points that help us; The Crouch Girls, work smarter not harder. Let us introduce ourselves. Taylor, age 12. I balance sports: Jr. High Basketball, Softball, Track, Volleyball and Travel Softball schedules with 4-H and being involved in the IL Dorset Association and the Continental Dorset Club Jr. activities. Morgan, age 10. She works hard making a difference in her grade school as a senior leader on Student Council, playing League Basketball, 4-H, and both Dorset clubs. Delaney, age 5. She has started Softball and Basketball this year as well as begins a career in our local Maroa Livestock 4-H Clover bud program.

We all have schedules - but leading up to any major show can be hectic, unless you plan it out. That's what we do. Working sheep, training, feeding, and general prep is important. Think about your schedules and how you can make improvements to make your animals, and yourself, even more show ready. Training: We start working with our breeding sheep, as soon as they move to the show barn. Your animals have to know what is expected of them in the ring, and that starts months before in the barn at home. We have always been taught to "Leave the Gate with Purpose". Every time you practice with your lamb; start by walking through the gate and pretend there is a judge in your line of sight. Practice the intensity and practice the handling of that lamb. You become more confident when the animal responds to your small movements. Feeding: Nothing is worse than changing feed companies or feed texture on your lamb. If they are not eating, consult a feed specialist at any of the major feed companies. They are always willing to help junior exhibitors. We have heard the statement "Feed can maximize your genetics". If you have a great base breeding program that your are showing from the feed program you are running should help your animal reach their successful potential. Show prep: Make sure you know the deadlines for entering the show, the rules and classes that you can exhibit in, and the timeline for the show. "Know the Details" is our slogan for shows, because you do not want to be unprepared for a show. Have health papers in hand one week prior to the show at minimum, have registration paperwork done well ahead depending on the animal and the association, and make sure your tack is in good condition. All those pieces are key for balancing your schedule of school, 4-H, church, and other livestock commitments. It will also ensure that you have a GREAT show! Best of luck as you prepare for your next show. Taylor, Morgan, and Delaney Crouch

Junior Spotlight:

S

JaLeigh Oldenburg

tepping Ringside with JaLeigh Oldenburg, of Mulhall, Oklahoma. JaLeigh is no stranger to the sheep show ring, the nineteen year old daughter of Jeff and Dusty Oldenburg has been involved in the sheep industry since birth. In our interview JaLeigh explained how when her father was, “about fifteen years old he bought all the bad, cull sheep from Durham Howard” and they’ve been raising Southdown’s ever since! As Jeff and Dusty’s first born child, JaLeigh went to every show and livestock event with them, as she put it, “my love for sheep started very early on!” That love for sheep, and agriculture wouldn’t have been possible without her parents, who still are the foundation of Oldenburg Farms. Aside from the sheep, Jeff currently manages a Ditchwitch branch, and Dusty owns and operates Final Drive Photography. While partial to livestock shows, specifically the Southdown ring, Dusty shoots weddings, senior sessions and family pictures as well. Although Dusty ranks among the best photographers in the business, those around the sheep barn may know her best as “The Showbarn Cook”. You can almost always find Dusty in front of her barn kitchen, making sure that all those who stop by Oldenburg Farms pens are well fed. Among the many faces who make Oldenburg Farms so successful,

30 | Ringside

are JaLeigh’s two younger brothers Callen and Lincoln. Callen, age fourteen, currently attends Mulhall-Orlando High School and as JaLeigh puts it, “Callen is really interested in the pig deal and is starting to get serious with the Dorper’s too!”. Youngest sibling Lincoln is now twelve and his focus lies primarily in the show goat industry. When asked to describe her two brothers, JaLeigh says, “Callen is the fun, easy going brother who is definitely overprotective of me. And Lincoln is the hardest-headed, pickiest of us three. He isn’t always fond of me coming home, so I usually have to warm him back up, but once he’s warmed up he is the sweetest and most loving.” Oldenburg Farms has been long in the making and it is most certainly a family30 affair. After years of adapting | Ringside and expanding, today the operation consists of about one-hundred and thirty nationally competitive Southdown brood ewes-a far jump from where Jeff started in his adolescence. While her family undoubtedly shaped her into the young woman that she is today, we, at Ringside Sheep Magazine, wanted to know more about JaLeigh and so through our Junior Spotlight interview, we did just that! The current Sophomore at Northern Oklahoma College (NOC), in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, is studying Agricultural Science and has become a pivotal employee at the NOC sheep

farm. When asked about her future plans JaLeigh shared that after the completion of her two years at NOC she will transfer to Oklahoma State University where she plans to change her major to Agricultural Education and Early Childhood Development. JaLeigh said, “besides raising sheep, because that’s something I want to continue to do, I hope to teach PreKindergarten or Kindergarten because I love working with young kids!” JaLeigh went on to share that she truly believes that her passion for the youth, and eagerness to become a teacher, stems from the sheep industry. She said that her mom used to always tell her, “There are always little kids watching”, and JaLeigh didn’t believe her at first… That is until parents and bystanders approached her and shared with her that their children admired her, or that they told their children to watch her in order to learn how to become a great sheep showman, but more importantly a great person. JaLeigh also said that having the opportunity to teach showmanship clinics for the past several years has helped steer her in the direction of what she wants to do for a career. With an immense passion for agriculture, teaching, and the youth when asked what her advice is to a new showman JaLeigh said, “Hard work is key, and to never give up! It can be hard as a first year showman to get defeated, and see other people winning, but just work hard and don’t give up, and some day you will get there too!” If you’ve been involved in the livestock industry for very long, odds are you have come across that one animal, you know… the favorite, and JaLeigh is no exception! I didn’t even finish asking the question before JaLeigh had the word “JoJo” out of her mouth, and she then went on to tell me about the sheep that stole her heart at just nine years old. JaLeigh shared that, “When we got her, we instantly knew, she was so tame… I would practice with her and I didn’t even have to hold her head to set her feet, I would crawl under

her and she would never move. JoJo went on to win Arizona National, was Reserve Supreme at the Oklahoma Youth Exposition (OYE)- which was my first big win there- and then she did very well at Louisville too!” While most have been partial to an animal at some point within their showing career or time involved with livestock, everyone has their favorite show. When the topic arose JaLeigh was quick to reveal that The North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), is her favorite livestock show! She explained, “I was eight the first time I got to go to NAILE and we brought four or five sheep that did alright, you know top five in class, but after the show I asked my dad ‘Why didn’t I win those banners?’ And from that time on I was determined to get a banner at Louisville. But, it’s not just the banner and winnings- I love NAILE because the caliber of livestock and all the friends that I get to see since everyone comes.” It was at that very show, on the infamous green shavings where JaLeigh recounted her favorite memory of showing sheep. When asked to pick just one, she shared that the 2017 North American will always hold a special place in her heart, “It was a huge deal, that year I had my first Grand at Louisville with the buck named Trigger Finger, then he turned around and won the open show too, later in the show I was named Premier Exhibitor! I won’t ever forget that year.” The North American is a ten and a half hour trip from Oldenburg Farms, bringing to light the nature of showing livestock and the many miles that are travelled each year. Every person has their go-to road trip past-time, playlist or podcast and JaLeigh said that often times you can find her sleeping. The majority of the miles JaLeigh travels are spent with family, where she said Ringside

they spend a lot of time on the phone connecting with breeders and checking up on customers. JaLeigh went on to share that if she is traveling on her own she listens to just about anything red dirt, and that right now her favorite artist is Parker McCollum. Although trips to shows accumulate many of the miles that livestock enthusiast turn over each year, trips to find breeding pieces or putting together a show-string are frequently even more critical. Oldenburg Farms have assembled national titles year after year, and with such a successful female base we were interested to hear from JaLeigh about the criteria that she uses to pick sheep out, whether that be within her own barn or someone else’s. JaLeigh responded that first and foremost she would want to go with her dad, and then she discussed that with the direction that the breed is going, “we really look for that beautiful profile they have to be ideal fronted, but still have enough shape and true width”. After some discussion, she mentioned “really just nothing too extreme, and breed character is important”. As our interview started coming to a conclusion there was one topic remaining, a topic that few have had the opportunity to share about first hand, JaLeigh was asked that as a National Sheep Proficiency winner, to tell us about that experience and what it meant to her. For those who may not know the National FFA Organization offers Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE’s), which allow students to keep record of their developing skill sets within a specific sector of the agricultural industry either through starting a business of their own or working for an existing company. An Agricultural Proficiency Award then honors those FFA members who excel within their given SAE area. Four National Finalists, within each proficiency area are selected from across the country, and then travel to the National FFA Convention to complete a rigorous interview process. At the 2018 National FFA Convention

held in Indianapolis, Indiana, JaLeigh was named the National Sheep Proficiency winner! She described the event as a “big experience, coming from a small Oklahoma FFA chapter I had never even been to the National FFA Convention before”. Later, JaLeigh recalled that she was very nervous throughout the entire process, and that it was a lot of work, which was definitely trying at times, but she made sure to point out “it was more than worth it to have my name called on the big stage!” JaLeigh explained that just like their sheep operation, it takes a team, and that her mom, Dusty, played a huge role in making her FFA career so successful! In our time getting to know more about JaLeigh Oldenburg it became clear that she is undeniably passionate about the agricultural industry and the junior livestock show ring, all of which is built on strong family values. JaLeigh may be best encapsulated by using her own favorite quote, “Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.” - Roy T. Bennett. JaLeigh has already achieved dreams that are sizable and admirable, but just like any journey she had to overcome setbacks and challenges, but chose to persevere. Given her drive and competitive nature there is no stopping JaLeigh from achieving each and every goal that she sets for herself- goals that are bound to leave a lasting impact on the sheep industry and the youth of agriculture! *photos provided by Oldenburg Family

Chicken Bacon Ranch Tater Tot Casserole Louisville is already here and that means we have to get creative on how we feed our family and friends while they are working hard to prepare for the sheep show. I don’t know about you, but my family is a meat and taters kind of family. That is why this recipe is one for the show barn. Ingredients Pre-cooked fajitas chicken 1 bag of tater tots 2 cans of cream of chicken soup Shredded Monterrey jack cheese 1 bag of bacon bits 2 packets of ranch mix 1/2 bottle of water I make sure and cover the Ninja's with crock pot liners and then start filling them up. Layer 1 Tater tots Chicken 1 can of cream of chicken soup 1 package of ranch dressing 1/2 bag of bacon bits Cover layer with cheese I add the 1/2 bottle of water to the sides of the Ninja once it is fully layered. Continue to layer until all of the contents are gone. Cook on high for 2 hours or medium for 4 hours. Stir before serving. Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone T

aking a step outside of your comfort zone can mean a variety of things. It can be as simple as asking questions in class when the others are silent or as extreme as moving to a new state where you know no one. This summer I had the great privilege to get outside of my comfort zone interning for the American Hampshire Sheep Association in Wamego, Kansas. Although I have had the opportunity to travel to many states through showing and competing on various livestock judging teams, I had never lived outside of Illinois. It was bittersweet leaving my family in the heart of show season during my last summer as a junior, but I knew it was a step that I had to take to grow as a young adult. As I drove through the Flint Hills of Wamego, KS for the first time I was definitely as equally excited as I was nervous for the summer that lie ahead. I had heard great things from past interns about the experience, but a new place with new people can be taxing. The nerves settled and the excitement inclined when I first walked into the office and was greeted with open arms from all the staff. It was then that I knew I had made the right choice. During my time in the office, I aided in the preparation for the National Cheviot Show and Sale, Midwest Stud-Ram Sale, and All-American Junior Show that was hosted in Kansas. Additionally, I learned how to register sheep through the Associated Registry and the various regulations of the 34 breeds. Amongst each experience, I found myself learning more about myself and putting my skillset to the test. That’s the beauty of getting outside of your comfort zone! I learned so much about myself in this process that I wouldn’t have otherwise if I hadn’t had taken a leap of faith.

36 | Ringside

Thus, my challenge to each of you is to take a step outside of your comfort zone. Whether that is big or small, every step is progress! Placing yourself in situations that you have never been exposed can be such a great avenue for personal growth. For me, moving out of the state helped me gain confidence in myself and my ability to thrive in a new environment. Not only do I recommend taking a leap of faith, but also seeking opportunities that breed associations have to offer.
