welcome to the sale

Welcome to the Wilson SimAngus Ranch 10th Annual Bull Sale. We sincerely thank all our customers and friends for the support of our bull program over the last 10 years. We are pleased to present to you what we believe is our highest quality set of bulls to date and are excited to offer them for your evaluation. This year we made some changes to our bull development program which included only a liquid protein supplement and grass hay at weaning. Our goal was to develop the bulls slower at first before introducing them to Purina Accuration in mid December. We were impressed with the way this group grew, gained and developed with minimal feed after weaning. Our bulls are kept in a 60 acre pasture with plenty of room for exercise and development of their feet and legs. We feel confident that the performance you see on sale day is a result of the quality and genetics of our cattle, not excessive feeding. Everyone usually talks a lot about the herd sires, but we would like to take a minute to talk about the females behind this set of bulls. We have high standards for fertility, function and performance in our cow herd. We range calve our cows as most of our customers do so mothering ability and maternal traits are highly selected. We find that it takes functional hard working cows to produce a set of bulls this uniform from top to bottom. Our cows do this on their own with no creep feed in our pastures. Although we believe no data or index will ever replace the eye of a cattleman, we have been working to bring you trait tested bulls driven by generations of data backed performance. We feel you can buy these bulls with confidence knowing their EPD’s are the most accurate available and the presence of these desirable traits will be evident in your calf crops. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about our 2020 bull sale offering and would be glad to help you find the bulls that best match your operation. We also welcome any feedback you may have on these bulls or any you have purchased in the past so feel welcome to call us anytime!

Sincerely, Wayne and Susan Wilson Kellen and Cheyenne Wilson

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Docility (DOC): Docility score. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below formore details.)

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: • •

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentileranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

We are very pleased with the Endurance progeny. We are confident like their sire they will be the kind that can go out and cover cows all summer and come back with good flesh in the fall. Lot 33 has a great disposition and offers a great balance of eye appeal and muscle shape.

Lot 44 is a stylish bull out of a first calf heifer that is big hipped and neat about his front 1/3. He is deep bodied and moderate in his frame. With his 60 lb birth weight and being sired by Stetson (one of the most proven calving ease bulls in the simmental breed), we are confident he will work well on heifers. He ranks in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease, and boasts a 148 API.

Why Buy Wilson Bulls? P ERFORM A NC E

Add pounds at weaning time with easier gain and maintenance thereafter with our moderate framed efficient converting bulls. Our bulls were pasture calved and raised in rough country with no pampering or creep feed. After weaning they were fed Purina Accuration and long stem hay as a contemporary group.

EYE APPE A L

We believe in producing black cattle that are smooth polled, structurally sound, square hipped, deep bodied, well muscled and good haired. We understand you want to be proud of the cattle you produce and have bred our bulls to meet that expectation. You will be happy to keep the heifer calves to join your cow herd while steer calves bring a premium at market.

FUN CT IO N

All bulls we sell meet or exceed breeding soundness examination standards set by Dr. Jim Myers at Belle Fourche Veterinary Clinic. We are happy to report that our past customers repeatedly state our bulls did their job all summer and came back in good body condition. We guarantee all bulls through the end of your first breeding season.

D ISPOSIT ION Life is too short for bad horses or wild cattle. Any bull calf with a bad attitude in our corral is promptly introduced to a sharp knife and later sold as a steer. We continue to monitor disposition as the bulls mature and cull accordingly.
