The Wisconsin Review

President Message Dear fellow Hereford breeders and enthusiasts,

The heat of summer is upon us, and it felt like just yesterday we were all at the annual meeting talking about how darn cold it was in the month of February. The year has flown by with many events.

We are looking forward to August 24th for the WHA Field day hosted by Huth Polled Herefords. These annual events are always a good time to network with other Hereford breeders By: Nathan Reinke and cattlemen. The field day will begin at ST Genetics, WHA President viewing one of the nation’s leading A.I. facilities. Following the tour at ST Genetics, the day will continue at Huth Polled Herefords with a CHB burger lunch, viewing of Hereford cattle from one of the top programs in the state, educational seminars and pasture tours. Seminar topics include Herefords and Heterosis, Center for Integrated Ag Systems, Grazing DNR Public Lands, E-quip and other NRCS programs, electric fencing and water systems, and pasture management. I encourage all cattlemen and cattlewomen regardless of breed to come enjoy a day of Hereford hospitality. I am looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people as we head into the fall season of production sales and World Beef Expo. Lets continue to make Herefords the breed of choice in the state of Wisconsin.

Fall 2019

A Minute with the Meents Marketing purebred livestock is always a challenge to reach new customers while maintaining your past customer base. This summer the American Hereford Association has released “Herefords on Demand,” a new program to help assist the members of AHA with the newest, most modern, up to date online catalog production system.

By: John Meents, AHA Fieldman 419-306-7480

“Hereford on Demand” is a tremendous marketing tool for breeders no matter what size of Hereford operation you are. This exciting system will allow private treaty sale listings, select small sale events, video sale offerings, show heifer prospect sales, sire directories, as well as traditional sale catalogs.

Live expected progeny differences (EPDs) updates that are searchable within an individual catalog or across all catalogs will be available with “Herefords on Demand.” This is a great opportunity for all Hereford breeders when buying or selling. The process to create a “Hereford on Demand” catalog has been created to be as user-friendly as possible with four steps to enter information for the catalog. These steps will guide the breeder through entering contact information, sale details, lot information, and then selecting a layout form. A Creative Services staff member will then work directly with the breeder to approve the catalog prior to posting it to the AHA website. Breeders can also order a small number to be printed for mailing. MAKE YOUR CATTLE BETTER TODAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO MARKET THEM TOMORROW! Today you now have a new system to assist you in marketing your Hereford genetics. Take advantage, by contacting Hereford Publication, INC, Creative Service Department, at 816842-3757.

National Hereford News

The Wisconsin Review A publication of the Wisconsin Polled Hereford Association

PACE is back and ready to take genetic evaluation to the next level.

The Advertising Rates and Deadlines for 2019

The American Hereford Association (AHA) is pleased to announce that beginning in July 2019, we will be back to running the Pan-American Cattle Evaluation (PACE) genetic evaluation. PACE was first released in July 2009 as a joint effort between the American Hereford Association (AHA) and the Hereford associations of Canada, Uruguay and Argentina. This first-of-its-kind collaboration saw the comparison of cattle from multiple continents in the same genetic evaluation.

A huge positive of PACE was the increase in commerce among participating countries in sharing Hereford genetics and improving the breed worldwide. In fact, according to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), there has been more than a 30 percent increase in semen exports in the last 10 years. This growth is in tandem with the strong North American trade between U.S. and Canadian Herford breeders.

When the AHA transitioned to the updated genetic evaluation in December 2017, which utilizes Biometric Open Language Tools (BOLT) software, the release was only a North American evaluation consisting of data from the U.S. and Canada. At that time, the two South American countries were not ready to make the transition to the improved genetic evaluation and wanted more time to research changes to the model. Since then, the AHA has worked with the leaders of the Uruguay and Argentina Hereford associations to run research prototypes and to determine the best approach to restructure PACE.

For all your advertising needs, contact:

Jane Adolph, Editor Phone/Fax: (815) 244-5456 18541 Slick Road, Mt. Carroll, IL 61053 Email: jeadolph@gmail.com

In adding South American data back into the North American genetic evaluation, we will gain more than 500,000 pedigree records and more than 200,000 performance records to contribute to the calculations of expected progeny differences (EPDs) of animals jointly used across continents. Again, getting back to running PACE allows for more linkage with common genetics used in both North and South America. At this point, the South American data will only be added in once a year as the two South American countries will only update their genetic evaluation once per year. The AHA will continue to update its genetic evaluation every Monday.
