ebraska weather never seems to disappoint. As I sit here and write snowflakes are coming down and yes it is October. It is definitely not unusual to have snow this time of year, but hopefully fall can stick around for awhile longer.

The past couple of months have been busy for the Association. Three of our big events including State Fair, Husker Harvest Days, and the Angus Tour.

During these events I met many people and gathered a few new ideas to better the Association.

First event was the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. The days leading up to check-in brought inches of rain and everyone was surprised to see people kayaking the walkway in front on the Tom Dinsdale livestock barn. This did not help the number of entries and several were forced to scratch due to the weather and the aftermath. Currently the Angus show is on probation and with another year of low participation we all need to stand together to keep this ROV show at our State Fair.

Following State Fair was three days at Husker Harvest Days expo. This expo brought people in from all over the world and met many people of all ages. FFA day was very successful, the producers were able to visit with our younger generation about their breeding programs and new innovations within the Angus breed.

Throughout the expo the Association sold tickets for the new Heifer Raffle Scholarship program, promoted the Angus Tour, and provided various informational handouts to those walking through the tent. There were five pens of tremendously bred cattle this year. Thank you to all the members who helped set up the exhibit, brought cattle, and came to visit us this year at Husker Harvest Days.

Concluding the trifecta of Association events was the Angus Tour on September 22nd and 23rd. First off, a big thank you to each and every one of those members that hosted a tour stop, provided cattle displays, or helped organize this tour. Your hard work, time, and motivation resulted in a spectacularly successful tour. The tour began with a social event at the historic Arrow Hotel in downtown Broken Bow. The evening event allowed tour participants to network with others attending the tour, make new friendships, share stories, and relieve a little stress. The good time had by all even attracted a few random folks staying at the hotel to join the tour. The day of the tour ended up being a beautiful sunny day. It allowed participants to see great foundationally bred Angus cattle in the Sandhills. New to the tour this year was a vendor fair, several product giveaways, and the drawing for the Heifer Raffle Scholarship program.

Several local vendors brought a wide arrangement such as cattle feed supplements, welding art, household décor, John Deere and Vermeer equipment, new Ford trucks, and more. See pages 1820 for tour picture highlights.

Our last big event for the year will be the Annual Meeting and Banquet. This event will be December 7th at the Holiday Inn in Kearney, Nebraska. With the flooding earlier this year in Kearney the convention center assures they will be up and running by our meeting time. This year Dr. Patsy Houghton will be speaking on Common Sense Heifer Development.

Her involvement in education and the cattle industry will provide substantial information in heifer development. Along with Dr. Houghton will be another speaker to be announced soon. On page 39 you will find the registration form for the meeting and banquet. Please note the room reservation block are due by November 7th and banquet reservation by November 25th. Following the meeting/banquet will be the Junior Angus Winter Show on December 8th. Juniors are encouraged to participate and bring cattle new to the show ring to give them experience.

Lastly, the Association is pleased to announce that Thane Barker of McCook, Nebraska, was the lucky drawing winner of the 2019 donation heifer. We thank those who purchased tickets for the new Heifer Raffle Scholarship program. This program is intended to raise money for scholarships for our younger cattle producers and help assist them in building their herd. There were 70 tickets purchased this year, which was remarkable considering the late development of the program. The Association plans to make this an annual program and the 2020 program will be announced soon; please contact me if are interested in donating a heifer for future programs.

In closing I wish you all a happy holiday season and hope that you get to spend time with those you love while working in the Angus cattle industry.

ow that fall is in full swing there are several events that have past that I consider very important and beneficial to our members; The State Fair, Husker Harvest Days, and the Nebraska Angus Tour . We all know that the cattle industry is undergoing some tough times, but it was great to still see all the participation at these events.

I felt that this year’s Angus tour was a great success. The participants did a great job putting everything together. The hospitality was great and the cattle were well presented. It’s always a good feeling having people at your place to see your livestock and see how your operation works.

The State Fair saw a good turnout from our members and many from neighboring states. I feel it’s a privilege that this is an ROV show, and as members we need to put forth our best efforts to help maintain that status and that comes from entries.

In closing, I want to thank all of those folks who put the time and hard work in for these events. It’s those kind of efforts that keep this Association strong. Best wishes to everyone this season and hope to see you in December at the annual banquet.

It was a nice variety of cattle displayed at Husker Harvest Days. It consisted of bull calves older bulls and heifers. Also there was good traffic through the tent from what I saw that Wednesday.

et me first acknowledge the sorrow across our industry for the loss of Arlen Sawyer, and give recognition for all of his contributions both locally and nationally. He was always willing to share his time and talent in a myriad of ways across the disciplines in the Angus world, and I know many lives were touched by his generous spirit.

Our prayers remain with his family and friends and we wish them all the best as they carry on.

At this writing, the feeder cattle market is showing some strength, so that’s a bit of good news. At a recent conference, I was fortunate to hear Randy Blach, the CEO of Cattle Fax give projections for the markets for the coming year. His projection was cautiously optimistic, and that positive trend (even if slight) was good hear. I would note that when I heard his presentation a year ago, he was forecasting some tougher markets, and his prediction of that cycle was certainly spot-on. Therefore, I took this recent “mildly better” forecast to heart!

Another noteworthy point that Randy made was, “The Certified

Angus Beef brand has changed the course of the entire industry.”

Obviously, he knew his audience, but he was very sincere in that declaration.

Certified Angus Beef was the first, and is the strongest driver in ensuring the consumer has access to consistent, high quality beef. He emphasized the tremendous progress the Angus breed has made toward providing high quality supply to the chain of processors of our product. He pointed out that by the middle of the 2000s, cattle grading USDA Choice and Prime totaled around 55% of all cattle harvested. However, by the end 2018, the carcasses grading Choice and Prime totaled nearly 80%, and the numbers continue to show more and more strength.

So we all continue to keep an eye on the true end product of our industry, the “center” of the consumer’s plate, high quality Angus beef!

Hello, Angus Friends!

I

t’s crazy to think the summer has passed, harvest has begun, and winter is quickly approaching.

Time has a terrible habit of passing too quickly and I, for one, would like time to slow down just a tad. Fall is my favorite time of year with cooling temperatures, colorful leaves, and the “crispness” in the air. I hope bonfires and roasting marshmallows are on your “to do” list as they are at the top of mine.

Nebraska Angus Auxiliary members met on September 1 and shared great ideas. A fun social activity is still being explored for the next meeting and information will be sent once details are finalized. Ideas to increase membership and involvement were discussed.

Our two fundraisers will be wrapping up at the winter banquet.

Auxiliary members will be selling raffle tickets for the Vetbox and the winning ticket will be drawn during the banquet. The Nebraska Angus Auxiliary members are hosting a silent auction and members are encouraged to bring a donated item to the banquet to support the Auxiliary.

The next meeting will be on December 7 in Kearney. Please like the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary on Facebook for further information and events.

As always, the Nebraska Auxiliary needs YOU, your CREATIVITY, and WILLINGNESS to assist the Nebraska Angus Association and the Nebraska Junior Angus Association whenever possible. The National Junior Angus Show will be in Grand Island in 2021 and the juniors will certainly need the Auxiliary’s help. You are probably weary of hearing or reading this but the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary wants YOU as a member! Hello Angus Friends!

T

he Nebraska Angus Juniors had a fun and exciting National Junior Angus Show, LEAD, and State Fair. Many juniors had the opportunity to travel to these events broadening their contact list and further developing their leadership skills.

Nebraska was well represented at the National Junior Angus Show. Some highlights include Miles Stagemeyer being slapped Reserve Supreme Owned Heifer, Miranda Raithel being a Division Champion in the Owned Heifer Show, Nebraska placing 2nd in all age divisions of Quiz Bowl, Senior Division Steak Champion, and many more. Also, I had the opportunity to run for the National Junior Angus Board of Directors and was elected on.

Following this, juniors and myself traveled to Nashville, Tennessee; where we toured Angus ranches, local Nashville agriculture stops, the Grand Ole Opry, and the historic Downtown Nashville. It was fantastic to see such a large number of Nebraska kids come and I am eager to see many more juniors attend in the future.

We met this early September for our annual meeting at the Nebraska State Fair. We discussed details regarding the 2021 National Junior Angus Show; as it will be hosted in Grand Island. If you are interested in helping or chairing a committee, please contact Brian Stoller at (308)737-6213 or Tiffany Stoller at (308)-7376230. Also, we are opening it up to the public to design a logo. The theme is “The Grandest Showman.” If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate in contacting me.

Our junior association will host its semen auction during the Nebraska Angus Association’s annual banquet in December in Kearney with specific dates and times to be released. Along with this we will also be having our annual Winter Show. This is the perfect event to bring new calves to get used to the showring and to connect with other juniors from across the state. I hope to see everyone in December!

eagan Skow, daughter of Brian and Tiffany Stoller, is a third generation Angus Breeder from Palisade, Nebraska. She and her younger sister, Mckinley, have been involved in the National Junior Angus Association since 2010. She is currently a sophomore at Oklahoma State University where she is majoring in Agricultural Communications with a Minor in Food Science. She wants to one day work within the Angus industry.

Nebraska Angus Family Obituary

RLEn sAWYER Arlen James Sawyer, was born Jan. 30, 1953 in Madison, S.D. to Richard James and Dorothy Elizabeth (Cherrey) Sawyer.

He was raised on his family’s Angus farm near Howard, S.D. Arlen graduated from Howard High School in 1971. He was a 4-H member and a member of the South Dakota 4-H Livestock Judging Team in 1971 that competed at the national 4-H judging contest in Chicago. He chose a major of agricultural economics with a minor in animal science at South Dakota State University (SDSU) and graduated in 1975. During his college years he was active in Block and Bridle Club, Rodeo Club, Little International, and was a member of the SDSU 19741975 Livestock Judging Team, one of South Dakota State’s most successful livestock judging teams coached by Dr. Dan Gee. After college graduation Arlen married his college sweetheart Rebecca (Becky) Ann Schumacher of Cresco, IA on June 7, 1975. He went to work as a herdsman for Cottonwood Angus Farm of Pipestone, MN that same summer. In December 1976 Arlen accepted the manager position of K Plus Angus Ranch near Bassett, NE. Arlen oversaw the day to day ranch management of 700 registered cows and fitted and showed pens and carloads of bulls at the National Western. He instituted an extensive AI program and did some of the first on-the-ranch embryo transplanting done anywhere in the U.S. Before the dispersion of the herd in 1983, Arlen helped conduct six bull sales and three female sales.

In 1982, Arlen and Becky purchased a small ranch in Rock County, NE, seven miles south of Bassett. In 1984, Arlen became associated with Premier Angus and Silver Plume Angus as they initiated the Profit Maker Bull program. A Premier cow herd of 350 females and a Silver Plume herd of 100 females were maintained by the Sawyers until the fall of 1990. In cooperation with the bull merchandising program, six Profit Maker Bull Sales were held in Bassett.

From 1984 to 1990 Arlen and Becky purchased more ranch land in Rock County, Neb. and expanded their own cow herd while maintaining the 24 • Nebraska Angus Association News • 2019 Holiday Issue

Premier and Silver Plume cows. In the fall of 1990, Arlen and Becky established “A & B Cattle” with a foundation herd of cows developed from the original Sawyer herd in South Dakota and other females developed during the K Plus and Profit Maker years.

A & B Cattle was recognized as a Historic Angus herd in 1995, on the 75th Anniversary of the Sawyer family continuously raising registered Angus cattle. Over the years, Arlen judged numerous regional and national livestock events including the Western National Angus Futurity, AllAmerican Angus Futurity, Ft. Worth Livestock Show ROV Angus Show, American Royal ROV Angus Show, Atlantic National and the NILE ROV Angus Show as well as other breed events at the National Western and North American. One of his most memorable judging experiences was at the 1995 South Dakota Angus Association’s state show and sale at Watertown, S.D. where the association was celebrating its 50th anniversary and honored the Sawyer family for being one of the founding families of the South Dakota Angus Association.

He attended the event with his mother.

For many years Arlen enjoyed exhibiting cattle at the American Royal, All-American Angus Futurity, Western National Angus Futurity, and the National Western. As a long-time exhibitor in the “yards” in Denver, A & B Cattle exhibited the reserve grand champion pen of bulls in 1992 and 2002.

Arlen was a member of the Nebraska Angus Association, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, and the Sandhill Cattlemen’s Association. He is a past president of the Nebraska Angus Association and the Area II Region of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association. He has served on the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Board of Directors and on the Beef Advisory Council to the Black Hills Stock Show. He and Becky have served as advisors to the Nebraska Junior Angus Association. Locally, he has served as a two-term president of the Bassett Country Club and is an active member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bassett, where he served as president of the Parish Council. He was also a card-carrying member of the United States Team Roping Championships and Nebraska State Rodeo Association.

Arlen was very proud to have been elected as a six year member of the American Angus Association board of directors from 2008 – 2014.

He served as chairman of the board for Certified Angus Beef in 2012. He was also chairman of the breed improvement committee of the association and served on the boards of Angus Genetics, Inc. and Angus Foundation, Inc. In 2012 he was recognized as the Nebraska Angus Association’s Producer of the Year.

Arlen is survived by his wife of 44 years, Becky; daughter Jessica Ann Sawyer of Kearney; son and daughterin-law Adam and Jenessa Sawyer and grandson Augustus Sawyer all of Bassett; brothers Darrell and wife Karla of Rapid City, S.D. and Merlin and wife Leann of Brandon, S.D.; sisters Connie Stief of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Darla and husband Jose Espitia of Round Rock, TX; Aunt Betty McAdaragh, Brookings, SD; seven nieces and six nephews; mother-in-law Irma Schumacher of Ames, IA; sisterin-laws Mitzi Schumacher of Lexington, KY and Johanna Schumacher of Ames, IA; and brotherin-law Mark Schumacher and wife Susan of Wolsey, S.D. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Dorothy Sawyer; brother-in-law Jerry Stief; grandparents Howard and Elizabeth Sawyer and Bert and Emma Cherrey; and father-in-law George Schumacher.

Funeral Services were held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bassett, Nebraska with Father Michael Wetovick, Father Bob Krantz and Father Michael Stec serving as Celebrants. Music was provided by Jessica Sawyer and Michelle Sawyer, Mel Coffman and Dan Carson, and Trudy Nolles. Lectors were Leann Sawyer, Karla Sawyer, and Darrell Sawyer. Pallbearers were Dennis Taylor, Jarold Callahan, Gary Malmberg, Leo McDonnell, Dan Dailey, Vern Suhn, Terry Graff, and Mike Coffman. Honorary bearers were Fellow Angus Breeders & Cattlemen, and The Guys at Charlie’s Roping Barn. Burial followed at the Thurman Cemetery near Bassett. Hoch Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to the National Junior Angus Association, the Nebraska High School Rodeo Association or to the family in his name for other designations.

he 10 producers who registered the most Angus beef cattle in the state of Nebraska recorded a total of 6212 Angus with the American Angus Association® during fiscal year 2019, which ended Sept. 30, according to Mark McCully, Association chief executive officer.

With a challenging wet summer this year’s Husker Harvest Days ended up turning out to be a great one!

The Nebraska Angus Association exhibit found at the Northwest corner of the grounds on Lot 162 under the red and white tent was sent up with five pens of cattle.

These pens were represented by members Lazy Black Diamond Ranch of Palmer, McConnell Angus of Dix, SC Cattle of Osceola, and Schulte Angus Ranch of Kearney.

The three day event brought expo goers from all over the country and all different ages. We appreciate all the hard work, commitment, and time these members provided to make this year successful. We will see you all next year at the 2020 show September 15-17th.

Angus Juniors Take Center stage at LEAd Conference The future of the business breed comes together in Nashville for annual event.

F

rom Aug. 1-4, more than 150 National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members took part in the annual Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee. The four-day conference was packed with workshops, farm tours, the opportunity to see some of the city’s most iconic sights and networking within the breed. The goal of the conference is to help develop leadership qualities in Angus youth so they can become better producers, advocates and supporters of the breed and agricultural industry as a whole. This learning opportunity gives juniors the chance to meet with industry professionals, ask questions and improve their knowledge base.

“The conference truly opened the eyes of our juniors, helping them to see a side of agriculture they have never seen before or visiting some of the most prestigious Angus operations in the country,” said Jera Pipkin, NJAA membership director. “The kids left here with a renewed perspective of themselves and tools for their leadership toolbox.”

This year’s theme “Angus: Live From Nashville” rang true as members experienced the city’s historic downtown area and attended a show at the Grand Ole Opry. The junior members also paid a visit to the headquarters of CKE Restaurants, the operators of Carl’s Jr.® and Hardee’s®.

They were given the chance to see their test kitchen, state-of-the-art technology and hear about how they market their products. Attendees even got a chance to tour Ingram Angus and Deer Valley Farms where they saw a freeze branding demonstration, participated in various educational sessions and learned about the different challenges in starting an operation. A dance at Deer Valley Farms on the last night of the conference gave everyone a chance to have fun and celebrate.

Throughout the event, the six retiring National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) officers gave their retiring thoughts and passed the torch onto the new team.

“The LEAD conference is a chance for the kids to learn about different aspects of the industry, as well as the culture of the cities we tour as well,” said Brody Fitzgerald, NJAA leadership director. “You don’t understand how many connections you can make

until you come to this conference.

When it comes to LEAD, I think for me personally, it was all about the connections I made along the way.

Also the memories tied to the culture of the areas we toured as well.”

During this event, attendees had the opportunity to interact with the NJAB and make connections with other Angus youth. They took part in leadership workshops and participated in team building exercises organized by the NJAB who planned the conference alongside the events and education department. The location and lineup of events change every year and requires plans to be made months in advance.

“It’s a great opportunity for juniors to develop their leaderships skills, network within their age groups and further those connections, as well as getting to learn a lot more about the industry itself from all different aspects,” said Madeline Bauer, events coordinator for the American Angus Association. “Getting to see them have fun and make friendships that are going to last them a lifetime is really worthwhile. All the hard work

that gets put into events, seeing the kids light up and say I’ve never seen this before or that’s really cool, makes it really satisfactory.”

This year was a great success with attendees from all over the country ranging from ages 14-21.

Dr. Patsy Houghton, DVM

Patsy Houghton was reared on a large cow-calf operation near Tipton, KS. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Kansas State University, taught two years at California State University-Fresno, served two years as Youth and Education Manager for the American Simmental Association, and then obtained her Ph.D. from Purdue University. She held the KSU Northwest Extension Beef Specialist position four years, and then started Heartland Cattle Company near McCook, NE where she pioneered the concept of ‘Professional Heifer Development.’ Patsy served as co-chair of NCBA’s Cattlemen’s College for 11 years; received Kansas State University’s 2011 Distinguished Animal Sciences & Industry Alumnus Award; was named Purdue University’s College of Ag Distinguished Alumni in 2010 and was selected for Purdue’s prestigious Old Masters Mentoring Program in 2009. Patsy currently serves on the Board of Directors for the KSU Livestock and Meat Industry Council.
