FROM THE EDITOR

2020 is here! I hope everyone had a great holiday season. I don’t know about you all but I was more than happy to say goodbye to 2019 as a livestock producers and farmer’s daughter. Here is to hoping 2020 brings better weather, less mud, and lots of sunshine.

First and foremost, I should close out year 2019 by saying THANK YOU for all the support. We had no idea what to expect with the first issue and we were so elated to hear so many wonderful things and get so much support at NAILE. We are really excited about 2020 being the first full year of this publication and watching it grow.

When this second issue reaches you, I imagine you will be in the heat of lambing season. A time that can be super exciting and full of heartbreak all at the same time. A season of little sleep and lots of trips to the barn.

I hope that the articles and advertisements in this magazine bring you excitement and remind you why the hard labor is worth it. Livestock producers are some of the best and hardest working people I know. It would be so easy for some of us to throw in the towel during the hard times and go find hobbies that are easier on our bodies and emotions. It is our passion of livestock that keeps us pushing forward to breed and raise the next great one. THE ONE that changes the industry.

So I will keep this short - Grab your glass and toast with me to 2020! May your blessings be many, your success be plentiful and your lambing barn full of great ones.

Another year has come and gone. If you are like me, you are looking over your fall lamb crop and thinking about sale season or looking at your ewes wondering if they will ever lamb. After NAILE, I am always excited to move onto the next lamb crop and see what I have put together. By the end of lambing, I am ready for show season and thinking about how to breed my ewes for the next breeding season.

Shepherd Spotlight:

Dave Harmann

We all know the saying “If you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life”. This is especially true for Dave Harmann. From a young age, he knew what he wanted to do with his life, and that was to be a shepherd.

Dave grew up around sheep as his father, Clarence always had a few head around. He began showing in 4-H in the early 1950’s. He began showing Southdown breeding sheep and wethers. He would also show breeding sheep for other people which included Hampshires, Oxfords, and Shropshires.

During high school Dave would spend his weekends working at Willobee Farms for Bob Reed. Bob was one of Dave’s mentors early on in his career in the sheep industry. With the help of Bob, Dave was able to get his job working for Miss Natalie Van Vleck at Van Vleck Farms in Woodbury Connecticut in 1963. Leaving Wisconsin, and moving to a new state, was a large enough challenge, let alone working with a new breed of sheep. Dave jokes that he had to look on a map to see where Connecticut even was.

Van Vleck was known for having elite Hampshires in the Northeast.

Dave showed up with the goals of expanding the ewe flock, holding a production sale, and expanding their showing to outside of the Northeast. Three years after Dave’s arrival, Van Vleck had brought sheep to the Midwest Stud Ram Sale and the Cornbelt Sale, and had Champion Ram at both. In addition to those sales, they had

an impressive list of wins from various shows, fairs, and sales including: Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota State Fairs, the Keystone International, North American International Livestock Exposition, and the Chicago International Livestock Show.

After Miss Natalie’s death in 1980, Dave took over the Van Vleck flock as his own for a few years before taking a new job at Green Mountain Dorsets in Vermont. He stayed there until 1998, then taking a job working at Mithoefer Dorsets in Indiana.

He only stayed there a short while before finding the place to finish his career, Riverwood Farms in Ohio. He took the position in 2003 and worked there until he officially retired in 2012.

Even though he is technically retired, his opinion is not. He still likes to add his two cents about the sheep industry and the improvements that should be made. During the sixty years he has been in the sheep industry, he has seen many changes both good and bad. Sheep went from having a small frame and being heavy fronted to the opposite and being tall and having less muscle. Slick shearing for shows has become more prevalent. He grew up showing sheep with 2-3 inches of wool and by 1980 it was becoming more popular to show with a shorter fleece. He states that “Sheep look better with wool and fitted, than being slicked off.”

Dave states “The best part about the sheep industry is the people involved. Your biggest competitors are also your best friends. The friendships you gain

are the ones that last a lifetime. Most of them turn more into a family than just being friends.”

Buster Wilson, Gary Saylor, Mike Nelsh, John R. Johnson, and Ron Guenther were just a few of Dave’s biggest competitors, but also his best friends.

He lived by the old showman’s code “When you’re on the shavings it’s game on, but as soon as you’re off the shavings it’s party on.”

Through the years the one person who has supported Dave since the beginning and that’s his wife Kathy. In addition to Kathy, their children Wendy, Bobby, and Holly have also been there to support their father. Dave has made an impact on many people throughout the years. Ask anyone that knows them and I’m sure they will have a story to tell. I can personally say, that as his granddaughter, it is great seeing all of those that he has influenced in one way or another. I am proud to call him my Grandpa!

I’m sure many readers just returned home from Louisville. As many on Facebook put it – it’s the Superbowl of sheep shows. Our breed had an impressive showing, and I’d like to thank everyone who came out and made it a quality show. During Louisville, we were able to award two juniors with college scholarships. Congratulations to Danielle Houghtaling from South Dakota and Mikara Anderson from Pennsylvania on receiving this honor!

Both have extensive Hampshire background, a strong work ethic, and very deserving of this scholarship.

I also want to congratulate our Futurity participants. The AHSA Futurity program is where youth turn in point forms from shows across the country on nominated ewes to compete for the most points. We hope to continue to see increased participation in this program, especially as the board of directors voted to expand it to include yearling ewes in 2020. In addition to distributing these many great awards, the AHSA board of directors met during the show. One very important item that the board delved into, was the results of a membership satisfaction survey. This survey provided us with excellent feedback to consider, including a closer look at services we can offer all segments of the industry, fitted, slick, and commercial. The board is looking into new ways to appeal to these segments, and we hope to unite more breeders in our association. Stay tuned for updates on this!

I write these notes as we approach the Christmas season and I hope you have a joyous time with family and friends. We had two very successful National Hampshire Shows at Louisville. The results will be posted elsewhere in this magazine, but congratulations to all of the exhibitors on two highly competitive Hampshire shows.

I want to thank Randy Pirtle and Brent Larson for their years of service on the AHSA board. They served the association well. I also want to welcome Bart Cardwell and Philip Thomas to the board and look forward to working with them in the years to come.

The AHSA board voted to start a yearling ewe futurity in 2020. Watch the website and your Hampshire Happenings emails for further details as they are finalized by the AHSA board of directors.

I hope that your lambing season goes well as the demand for registered Hampshires continues to thrive. I hope you have a successful and rewarding 2020.

Wool: Beyond the Stereotype

This edition of Reid’s Ram-blings was composed by Jake Thorne, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Associate. Jake has been a contributing editor to this column over the past year and is a valued asset to the sheep and goat Extension team at the San Angelo center. Enjoy!

Wool is the best kept secret in the world of natural fibers. It’s more expensive than cotton, not as prominent as leather, and not as trendy as hemp… but in my opinion, it is the premier fabric on the planet!

It may not even be fair to claim wool as a secret, as it can be argued that wool is the original fiber used for clothing. However, only recently has wool started to shed its stereotype as a winter-only sweater with a make-yasquirm itch factor of 10.

Thanks to improved genetics and super-wash technology, developed in Australia and popularized in the last decade, that removes the “prickle” caused by wool scales and sharp fiber ends, wool is popping up as a nextto-skin apparel item for all four seasons. You’ll find it under heavy down jackets on Mt. Everest, in a camo pattern in the woods this fall, as a reflection protectant around a fisherman’s neck in Belize, and of course, on millions of feet as both socks and shoes.

It doesn’t stink. Its absorbent. It’s fire retardant. Its biodegradable in 6-months. And most importantly, it keeps your body temperature in a comfortable range… not too cool or warm. #woolcandoitall.

The point of my heavily biased promotional statement is to lead into the fact that Christmas is right around the corner and I hope you look for American wool products for your loved ones. Save the polyester for the white-elephant exchanges!

Admittedly, the majority of the wool we grow in America gets quickly snatched up by China (in the absence of trade wars), but here and there, a few apparel companies have turned their eyes to the homeland to find a domestically sourced product, and a few sheep outfits and off-the-farm-buyers have stepped up to the plate as providers. If you are interested in purchasing an item that will last forever, can be worn year round, and is 100% made in the USA, I encourage you check out the following website; https://www.americanwool.org/

With that said, wool doesn’t just happen. It takes tremendous efforts on the part of farmers, ranchers, shearers, buyers, and marketers to grow, harvest, and sell this unparalleled fiber. Truly, if it was easy, everybody

would do it and wool would be cheap. However, it takes dedication to ensure the well-being of the sheep who grow it and to care of for the fiber itself, all the way from sheep to shelf.

The production of wool in the United States is truly an inspirational story that the public, who is increasingly curious about where their food and clothes come from, are falling in love with. There is history in the wool business, there is beauty in the areas it is grown, there is magic in the way it performs as a fiber, and it is the true definition of sustainability.

In Texas especially, we are fortunate to have mohair and angora goats as a major component of our fiber industry as well. Some would say that sheep turning grass into wool is a superpower, but I would argue that goats are more impressive, they grow hair living off cedar and rocks!

Here in the San Angelo office, we make it a point to promote wool and mohair in every way we can, and that mostly comes in the form of supporting those who produce it. Besides relaying the latest scientific research, we also annually hold a shearing course in early January. To steal the name from our sheep friends up north, we should really rename the event a “wool-harvesting” school.

Students will attend from across the state and country to learn the ropes of becoming a shearer. They come with a sense of curiosity about the practice and leave with sore muscles, a belly full of lamb, a new skill, and most of all, an appreciation for what it takes to play a part in producing the greatest fiber in the world. We need you to encourage young people to participate and learn this skill, which requires strength, endurance, and perseverance – traits that most all ranch kids already embody.

In closing, I want to circle back to wool as a Christmas gift. I continuously mentioned it as a clothing item, but did you know there are wool surfboards? How about wool band-aids? I bet not. So, when Santa is furiously looking for last minute ideas, let him in on the secret that is American wool. Actually, let’s face it, that red robe alone doesn’t keep him warm all night traveling through frigid conditions … I bet he already knows!

Communicating with your sheep shearer Submitted by Aaron Loux

As most readers of Ringside, I grew up on a family farm that raised purebred show sheep.

My passion for working with sheep led me into the shearing industry, which has been rewarding in many ways. Among other things, it has given me a broad view of the sheep industry, and has allowed me to meet and work with some amazing people, and of course work with sheep every day. As we enter the silver lining of winter, lambing season, I’d also like to remind you that it may also be time to start thinking about spring shearing. The topic of shearing I’ll talk about here is the essential piece of communication with your shearer.

Depending on the sizes of flocks in an area, the business of sheep shearing varies from region to region. In places like New Zealand and Australia, or even parts of western USA, flocks are typically too large for farmers to deal directly with shearers.

In theses places, contractors organize the work and the workers, which allows shearers to focus on just shearing and not have to deal with the details of scheduling. In the northeast corner of the USA, shearers are independent. It cuts out the middleman, but also adds complexity to the job. Furthermore, in places where a job may take days or even weeks to complete, an independent shearer will often need to coordinate multiple jobs in a single day. Shearers in my area quickly realize the importance of effective communication, and in turn will expect the same from the shepherds they are working with.

Sheep shearing is a specialized skill. Hiring out this task makes sense for many shepherds, and can save the shepherd a lot time and effort. If you are in an area where most shearers are independent, I’d like to offer a few tips on effective communication, which will make shearing a pleasant task for both you and the shearer.

Get in touch early.

Don’t wait until the last minute! Even if you are a returning customer, contact your shearer well in advance. I set my schedule up at least a month in advance, so be sure to get on the schedule and allow your shearer time to plan.

Be patient.

When you’re contacting during the shearing season, remember that shearing is a taxing job, both physically and mentally. If your shearer doesn’t

get back to you instantly, allow them time to give you a response. Sometimes they are waiting to hear back from someone else in your area before offering you a date.

Describe your situation accurately.

Here, I am mostly referring to the number of sheep you need shorn. It’s hard to plan a day without accurate numbers. Other details are also important; the breed of sheep, the timing of your shearing (pre-lamb/ due dates, post weaning, etc). The more information you can provide, the better.

Additional Services.

Shearers may or may not provide additional services. It’s fine to ask, but don’t be disappointed if your shearer is not able to provide services such as hoof trimming, vaccinations and deworming.

Price Quote.

Establishing the cost of shearing prior to scheduling is a good idea for both farmer and shearer, so don’t be afraid to ask. Expect prices to vary based on how far away your shearer is coming from, and the size of the flock.

I hope your winter and lambing seasons go well.

Remember, shearing is just around the corner. Shearing does not have to be stressful, and the best way to ensure a stress-free shearing for all is good communication.

Breed Business: Part Two From David Trotter, American Oxford Sheep Association

The American Oxford Sheep Association wrapped up another successful Ewe Lamb Futurity Program at the National Oxford Junior Show in Louisville. A total of 55 ewe lambs were nominated by breeders earlier this spring, and then offered in public sales. Of those 55 nominated ewe lambs, 12 junior members purchased and showed one or more of them all season to earn points in the Futurity program.

Awards were made both nationally and by district.

Junior Spotlight

Andrew Slack

Sitting Ringside you often times see Andrew Slack of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and his brothers Tommy and Joey exhibiting their sheep and assisting others. However, Andrew’s passion for showing did not come until later in his junior career. Andrew recalls “Always going to shows and helping dad, but I never caught much interest until I was a sophomore.” From there his passion for the industry only grew! In 2011, Andrew competed in his first fitting contest and since then (with a little nudging from is father) fitting has become a passion for him. Fitting has allowed Andrew to meet new people from across the country.

Even though Andrew found his passion later in his junior career, he and his family are no strangers to the sheep industry. His father, Kevin Slack, jumped into the Suffolk breed in the early 1970’s. Since then he and his family have continued to expand the operation, which currently consists of 120 suffolk ewes, fifteen dorpers, and some whether type ewes.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin Platteville in May with a major in Animal Science, Andrew is looking to pursue a job in animal nutrition, or is interested in working with genetics, along with growing the family flock.

Family is a key factor on show day for Andrew. Showing with his brothers is his favorite aspect of shows (besides fitting of course). “Depending on the day or the animal it’s me and Tommy or Joey and I, and we just click.

how the other works, and the same way with Tommy on another animal.” When asking Andrew who his greatest mentors are he states hands down his father Kevin and grandpa Jim are his heroes.

“When I was a freshman in high school, I didn’t really enjoy farming. I just got up, did chores, and went back in the house. Over time, through the examples my dad and grandpa have set, I’ve truly gained a passion for farming”.

Andrew had the opportunity to serve on the Junior Suffolk Board for eight years, holding both the office of president, as well as vice president. It has given him the chance to be involved in his breed association, and has taught him lessons he can use outside of the sheep industry. Andrew states, “You learn responsibility quickly, to make shows run, and get junior members involved.” Andrew’s words of advice for younger juniors is to get involved in your breed’s association and to meet new people every time you go to a show. In Andrew’s eyes, family isn’t limited to those who are directly related to you.. “The sheep industry is one big family, and everyone knows of everyone in the business; it often leads you to meet people who may become friends for the rest of your life.”

Show Barn Breakfast Burrito One of the kids favorite dishes for a show or even if we are home and need a quick on the go breakfast is the breakfast burrito. This does take a little planning on the cook’s part but worth the effort. It has lots of protein to keep them full in the show ring until they have time to eat lunch.

Ingredients 2.5 dozen eggs 1 bag frozen O’Brien potatoes 2.5 lbs of cooked sausage of choice Shredded Monterrey jack cheese Salt Pepper Large tortillas The night before you are going to make the burritos, layer your crock pot with the O’Brien potatoes ( a couple of handfuls) then cooked sausage (couple of handfuls)then a couple of handfuls of cheese. In a separate bowl I whisk my eggs and add salt and pepper to your liking.

Pour the eggs over the top of the layers, turn your crock pot on warm and let it cook over night.

I have one crock pot that will cook the eggs all the way through very well and I have one crock pot that does not. Don’t panic if the eggs are not cooked thoroughly when you wrap them in the tortilla and press it on the panini maker until the tortilla is crisp and the egg will finish cooking.

In the morning, when I am ready to get breakfast rolling, I fire up the panini maker and get started. I do 2 crock pots full and will usually feed close to 30 people.

I have now been showing Katahdins for two years, I started with a small flock and plan to keep expanding as the years go on. I started this project because my Aunt and Uncle introduced me to showing sheep. They had recommended this breed and well as the show world. I had my own market lambs I had shown at the county fair, but showing breeding sheep has been so much more fun. I am so thankful they had encouraged me and supported me to start showing Katahdins.

I have learned so much over these past two years. They have taught me about vaccinations, hoof trimming, nutrition, responsibility, showmanship and management as well as many other things. I have gotten the opportunity to travel around the country to show them. It has been such an amazing experience.

With this opportunity I have learned more than I ever thought I would. I think more people should show them as well, because they are a great meat breed but they have features that make them great show sheep as well. I have had good luck at the shows I have attended.

When showing you get to meet so many other breeders and learn new things from them as well. I got to learn more about the structure of the sheep so that I can pick the best one to represent breed character.

I plan to continue showing Katahdins for my own enjoyment, but also to try and influence others to start showing them as well because they are an underappreciated breed.
