Notes & News from Anne March Winds, April Showers… For many of us the proverb "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers", holds a place in our childhood memories. Maybe it was recited to you by your grandmother or you recall a sing-song version from your days on the school playground. As March approaches, it always comes to my mind. I think of March winds hopefully drying up the snow and ushering in sunny days and blue skies as Kansas Angus breeders continue calving season and ready their farms and ranches for spring production and private treaty sales. I think of warm April showers paving the way for green grass and the first signs of wildflowers in May and early spring. Rains and grass are so important on our cattle ranches and farms, perhaps that’s why I’ve always been so fond of the simple saying. Thank you and Welcome In January the KAA hosted it’s 67th annual meeting, we thank Brandon New for his leadership as the 2019 president and recognize the service of Neal Haverkamp, Jason Flory, Flinton McCabe and Chad Briener who completed their terms on the board of directors. We welcome new board members David Briener, Rick Cozzitorto, Elizabeth Perkins and Bryce Barnett. As you flip through the pages of this issue looking at the advertisements don’t miss Page 1 for KAA highlights, the calendar on page 23 and the re-cap of the annual meeting, banquet and junior show on pages 12-13.

Research Hair Shedding EPD Launched AGI Genetic tool will be used to predict heat tolerance and tolerance to fescue toxicosis. The American Angus AssociationⓇ launches a research expected progeny difference (EPD) for hair shedding Feb. 5, 2020. The research EPD has been in development since 2011 and is now brought to fruition through the collaboration of the American Angus AssociationⓇ, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), Mississippi State University, North Carolina State University and the University of Missouri (MU). Early summer shedding is an indicator for both heat tolerance and tolerance to fescue toxicosis, and it lends discussion to a genetic correlation between a dam’s shedding score and the weaning weights of a calf. “For producers in heat-stressed areas and producers grazing endophyteinfected (hot) fescue, hair shedding is an evaluation of environmental adaptability and cow performance,” said Harly Durbin, past AGI intern and current MU Ph.D. student. “Cattle that shed their winter coat earlier in the season are less stressed and therefore can put the energy that might have gone to thermoregulation toward growth and taking care of a calf.” Hair shedding is evaluated on a 1-5 visual appraisal scale, where 5 is a full winter coat, and 1 is completely slick. While there is some variability in shedding patterns between individuals, cattle tend to shed from front to back and top to bottom. Using Angus data, hair shedding has been found to have a moderate heritability of 0.42, falling between that of weaning weight and marbling.
tion CEO. “Now being able to combine G.A.P. certification allows these programs to put more dollars in cattlemen’s pockets.” The partnership also delivers convenience for busy ranchers. “EarthClaims and AngusLink business activities are complementary, and producers will enjoy being able to have one auditor perform the G.A.P. audit in conjunction with the NHTC and NeverEver 3 audit,” said Ginette Gottswiller, American Angus Association director of commercial programs. “We are delighted to join with the American Angus Association to offer combined services,” said Jay Friedman, EarthClaims CEO. “G.A.P. certification brings market premiums in addition to those based on the Association’s excellent PVP programs. Joining with America’s largest breed association to offer EarthClaims’ consumer-centric verifications makes sense and aligns with both our missions.” EarthClaims is an industry leader in animal welfare third-party verification services and the exclusive provider of G.A.P certification in North America. The American Angus Association is the largest beef breed registry in the U.S. and operates AngusLink, a USDA PVP that verifies age, source, Angus-sired genetics, NHTC, NE3 and Calf Management. January 25-26, 2020 ▪ Hutchinson, KS Since 1958, the Kansas Angus Association has selected a member or members to be inducted into Honorary Membership. The criteria is based on this simple but powerful statement. “Dedicated to those who, by work & deed have contributed to the improvement of Angus cattle & the livestock industry in the State of Kansas”. Gordon Stucky , Kingman was the KAA’s 2019 inductee and was inducted during the annual banquet of the KAA on January 25, 2020 The following is the narrative from a video presentation presented during the Annual Banquet .
Kansas Angus Association Honorary Member Gordon Stucky by Elizabeth Stucky Luchsinger and Jacob Stucky It is fitting that the Kansas Angus Association Honorary Member Selection Committee chose our Dad, Gordon Stucky, as the recipient of the Honorary Member Award this year, 2020, the Year of Vision, because when he was a teenager, he had a vision. That vision entailed owning his own registered Angus operation. His father, Martin Stucky, moved to Kingman County in 1937 and established a diverse crop and livestock operation. Dad was born into agriculture and his family made a living from the land. Dad’s passion for registered Angus cattle was solidified in 1976, when he attended the Kansas Angus Futurity as a 16 year old. He was given a warm greeting by fellow Kansans Allan Miller, George Crenshaw, and Eldo Kroeker. Dad attributes his early enthusiasm and loyalty to the breed to those producers and continued encouragement from Arlos Rusk, Dick Janssen, Henry Gardiner and Dale McCurry. While at the Kansas Angus Futurity that year, he purchased a registered Angus yearling heifer for $350. The purchase included two amps of semen and an artificial insemination certificate for the legendary bull Great Northern. Dad took the bull calf resulting from that first mating back to the Futurity as a coming 2-year-old and sold him for $1,500. With such a high return on investment, he knew he was on the right track. At the 1996 Kansas Angus Futurity, Stucky Ranch exhibited the Supreme Champion which sold for $10,900. At the 1999 Futurity, Stucky Ranch exhibited the Champion Pen Female selling for a Futurity record $24,600. While earning a bachelor’s degree in animal science at K-State, he worked for Galen Fink, manager of the beef herd, both at the university and at Fink’s own ranching operation. True mentors, Galen and Lori Fink fostered Dad’s interest in the seed stock business, giving him experience in seed stock management, artificial insemination and embryo transfer, as well as a foundation in marketing and a vision for the future.
tradition continues now that granddaughter, Coye is a current Kingman FFA officer. Dad knew early on Angus cattle were the kind of cattle you could make a living on. His dedication to the breed has suited him well in leadership positions as he was elected President of the Kansas Angus Association in 1999 and President of the American Angus Association in 2014. Dad has also served as the chairman for the Kansas Angus Association sponsored female sale at Pratt Livestock for the past 25 years. He credits numerous American Angus regional managers, auctioneers, ring men, and Pratt Livestock employees for the successful sales. That event has sold over 15,000 head, generating more than $20 million in revenue for commercial Angus producers. To share their passion for the breed, Gordon and Caroline have hosted several ranch tours. Caroline’s first event at the ranch included hosting the National Angus Conference and Tour in 2012. They have also hosted several events for Certified Angus Beef including the International Beef Industry Tour and a Master of Brand Advantages event. In 2017, Certified Angus Beef presented the Ambassador Award to Gordon and Caroline for their partnership in hosting and educating various groups from all over the world. A steady focus on fulfilling his customers’ needs and meeting their expectations has earned Dad a loyal customer base, with most of those customers located within a 200-mile radius of the ranch. This proximity allows cattlemen to visit the ranch whenever it is convenient for them. Stucky Ranch is also a short commute from Hutchinson Community College which has allowed Gordon to host HCC livestock judging practices on a regular basis. This is just one example of his passion for teaching the next generation about the Angus breed. Caroline has been a welcome addition to the ranch, and can always be counted on to make guests feel welcome, and provide a helping hand wherever needed. Gordon has served in leadership roles with the Kansas Livestock Association, Farm Bureau, Extension Council, and the Beef Improvement Federation. Dad’s involvement reaches beyond the Angus breed as well. He was also past chairman of the Kingman St. Patrick’s Catholic School Council and the Wichita Diocesan Catholic School Council. He also served as the Building Committee chairman for the $5.4 million renovation of the St. Patrick’s School in Kingman which was completed in 2011. As we reflect on the vision Dad had in 1976, we are inspired to set our goals high and aim to have the same determination that he has to reach them. We are honored to call him our Dad and blessed to have been taught his values. Congratulations Dad! There is no one more deserving of this honor than you!
In 1981 Gordon and family moved back to Kingman to establish a family-owned ranch. Conversion of the commercial herd that grandpa started to a registered herd was a gradual process over the next decade, but Dad was determined to grow the seed stock enterprise. He purchased about 200 females in those early years, doing his research and attending producer sales in Kansas and the Midwest, as well as attending the Kansas Angus Futurity. Bucking the trends and dealing with the economy of the 1980s provided some discouraging times. Dad marketed bulls off the ranch private treaty until 1993, when he hosted his first public bull sale. After that first sale, Dad knew everything was going to be ok. The ranch now produces enough bulls to serve both niches — those who like a public auction and those who prefer private treaty. Dad believes in putting the customer first. The mission statement of Stucky Ranch is “To provide the beef industry a high-quality product, designed to provide our customers economic benefit and satisfaction, with the assurance of our personal customer service.” While diligently developing his herd, he was also raising children. Jesse, Jacob, Elizabeth and Jonas were raised on the family ranch. He instilled in all of us the value of determination, hard-work and leadership. While we were growing up, Gordon supported the local 4-H program by being the livestock project lead, and he continues to support the program today by sponsoring premiums for livestock projects. Dad also supported our involvement in the local FFA chapter. This

Cobb to Lead CAB Production Team By Miranda Reiman Describing beef supply and demand as a bit of a chess match, Bruce Cobb says he’s learned the game through various roles in the past three decades. Starting March 1, the Texas native will take on a new vantage point as executive vice president of production for Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB). "I’ve been able to participate on both sides of the industry, demand development and then supply and I enjoy figuring out: how can we satisfy the consumer and the end user by what we’re doing on the production side?" he says. "Blending those two pieces is where the good stuff is." Since 2005, Cobb has been at the helm of Consolidated Beef Producers, the country’s largest cattle marketing cooperative. He and his team traded 700,000 head of cattle annually across the West and Midwest. "It’s clear we’re on the right track as it relates to quality. You can look at how consumers have responded just in the last four to five years and how the brand has grown," Cobb says. "The challenge will be how do we get at those intangibles? These producers care for the animals. They care for the environment and the land. They want to do what’s right." But the "opportunity is still there" to communicate and capture the value in those facts, he says. That’s just one of the challenges Cobb looks forward to in his new role. As executive vice president, he will oversee the brand’s supply development, producer communications and packing divisions, while serving as the voice of the producer to the greater company. Premiums for the brand are built at the packing level, so cattlemen will also benefit from Cobb’s ability to help packers further identify sales opportunities. "It was important to us that we found somebody so grounded in the production side that they had credibility with the cattlemen we serve, but also that they were able to see beyond the ranch gate to the way the whole beef community is interconnected," CAB President John Stika says. "That is what’s really exciting about Bruce and the experience he brings. "In addition, I really think he’s going to fit really well into the culture at CAB, which has been a hallmark of our success," he says. Cobb brings diverse perspectives, with experience ranging from the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo to Daymon Worldwide to the U.S. Meat Export Federation and Texas Beef Council. He’s spent time thinking like a retailer, international trader, cattle producer and consumer," Stika says. The son of West Texas cotton farmers, agriculture and FFA shaped Cobb early on. He spent just one semester as a landscape architecture major, before trading that for agriculture communications, earning his undergrad at Texas Tech University. His masters in international agriculture marketing at Texas A&M followed. "It really comes down to the desire to continue to make a difference in the world of producers, whether that’s cow-calf, feeders or stockers," Cobb says. "This is an opportunity to take that to the next level and really impact the wellbeing of producers from the production but also the demand side." Cobb and wife Margie have three children and have spent their fair share of time driving to events and cheering them on from the bleachers. They’ve been very active in their local Canyon, Texas, community and the greater ag community. "The heritage and legacy and the value of being a good steward, integrity and honesty—those are things I want to continue to celebrate and enhance along the way, because there’s just no other industry like agriculture," he says. Cobb begins his new role March 1, when he can be reached at BCobb@certifiedangusbeef.com.

Marketed Best Where feeder calves have value and cushion the bottom line By Abbie Burnett Premiums for high-Choice and Prime cattle keep sending value signals, even if just word of mouth. If you’re a cow-calf producer, it may be hard to see where it adds value in your wallet. Paul Dykstra, beef cattle specialist for the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand, encounters that theme all across the country. At the recent Cattle Industry Convention and Tradeshow in San Antonio, he addressed the impact of premiums on cowherd operators. In a Learning Lounge session, Dykstra opened with CattleFax survey data showed 44% of cow-calf producers sell calves right off the cow. “By doing so we are limiting our exposure to both the risk and the upside value potential in our calves,” he said. “Right or wrong, most of us are disengaging from that animal when we sell that product off the ranch.” But those premiums and discounts for their later performance may have already affected your wallet, because the value-based market increasingly dominates feedyard sales to packers, according to CattleFax.
them off at auction markets at the worst possible time, he said. It’s just market dynamics of supply and demand with too many days on feed required to finish in April or May. A 650-pound (lb.) animal sells well in October because it will finish in time to catch a seasonal high. Feedyards are also buying fewer lightweight calves. “Feeders are getting tired of weaning calves they paid a premium for just to face health challenges,” he said. “Buying weaned, vaccinated cattle is a hedge on health.” It’s a dollars-and-cents argument in favor of cattle weaned at least six weeks. Some years, retained ownership shows the most profit potential, as the 2018 CattleFax survey data shows a $129 per head advantage to those sold as calves, Dykstra said. Some of these producers likely captured performance and carcass advantages in addition to changing market dynamics. That’s not a guarantee, however. Many cow-calf producers keep excellent records and an increasing number participate in supply chain documentation that earns “information badges” for calves. Details make the difference to buyers.
Dykstra said negotiated cash sales of finished cattle to packers has declined to near 20% as the rest sell on a formula, forward contract or grid basis. Even the negotiated cash sales include grading projections.
“If we’re going to put badges on the marketing description, and the cattle don’t match from a quality, breeding, genetics and health perspective, then we’re probably wasting money. The buyer can see through that pretty quickly,” said Dykstra.
That’s mostly due to increasing demand for higher quality, highly marbled carcass since 2004, which has generally led packers to raise premiums for quality and reduce discounts for yield grade (YG) 4s and 5s.
One old-fashioned idea trumps virtually all formal programs, he added.
Today’s grid charts still show the highest premiums at the intersection of Prime and YG1, but that doesn’t make this the realistic goal, Dykstra said. The most profitable outcome typically features the highest quality grade possible while capping cutability challenges: aiming for yield grade 2s, while limiting YG4s and eliminating YG5s. “I would not concentrate on Prime, Yield Grade 1 as the target,” he noted. “I would focus on getting more carcasses into the upper-left echelon of the grid. That’s the entire concept behind grid marketing.” As feedyards track which sources put the most cattle into that sweet spot, they find motivation to purchase the cattle that will achieve those goals. This type of marketing program is based on beating the packing plant share of Choice in the mix, currently near 70% on average. For loads that exceed that mark, the premiums turn on. “This is the ‘why’ your calves are worth more,” said Dykstra. But moving toward the “how,” he added there’s a load of management decisions that lead to capturing the full value of your calves.
Relationships. “We can talk about cows that are better—bred better, managed better, healthier, got the badges—until we’re blue in the face, but the very simple solution is, you have to have relationships,” Dykstra said. Are you the guy at the auction block with the best reputation feeder calves? The third-generation ranch that the auctioneer wants to pound out to the top of the market? If not, he said investing in more face-to-face time is essential. “The more you talk to them, the more you know them, the more likely they’ll show interest in your cattle,” he said. When your name comes across the phone, email or video-auction screen, you’ll want positive feelings and thoughts to go along with it. You’ll want the buyer to know “this is a good deal,” Dykstra said.
“I think it’s better to put your boots on their soil,” he said. “Get out in the country and see them ahead of time. Talk about your cattle and all you’ve Seasonality is part of it. done, so that five months later when it’s time to sell, you’re not sending out an email blast saying ‘I’ve got them for sale now, and they’re some of the “If you’re selling a five-and-a-half-weight calf in October,” Dykstra said, “the buyer has less reason to pay a premium for carcass quality.” Those calves better ones.’” won’t finish until June or August when quality premiums are seasonally When you combine quality with proactive marketing sense, there’s great small. opportunity for your wallet. With most calves in North America born in the spring, most producers drop 22 ▪ Kansas Angus News
