The Moser, Michaelis and Josefiak Families It is only fitting that Harry is on the cover of this special sale catalog. Raising registered cattle was his family’s endeavor, and I believe if the truth be told, it was he who dreamed that dream with all his heart in the early 80’s in the Moser family. Being in the “purebred business” never crossed my mind while growing up, or even in college, until I met Harry. I fancied myself more into research or even teaching, not really giving a thought to actually being able to raise good cattle and spend my days on a ranch. I grew up on a general crop and livestock farm, raising commercial cattle and hogs and farming with my family. It was only after I met Harry and we joined our lives (it will be 35 years in January!), that we embarked on this adventure. He has been the rock, the visionary, the reason we have been in this together for the long haul. It has been my honor and privilege to be by his side and experience the journey we’ve been fortunate to live while here on “God’s Green Earth.” Thank you, Harry, for asking me to dance that Friday evening in Fargo back in September 1980.

Thank you for taking time to evaluate our 2016 sale offering. We appreciate your interest in our program, and as you take the time to study this catalog, not only will you find information on our cattle, you will also find out about how Moser Ranch operates, who does the dayto-day work, what makes it tick, our philosophies, our beliefs, and what we hold near and dear to us.

As the transition to this present market continues, we all need to concentrate even more on our management and our genetics. Our focus, as it has always been, is to improve your bottom line with cattle that will efficiently produce a product that is of high quality and in demand to meet what our industry-and most importantly what the consumer-wants. This is our way of life, we have to do it right to survive.

Benefits are added in every step of the production line. From the moment those first calves are born easily, value is added. Heavy weaning weights and sale barn transactions at that same time usually elicit a note, an email or a phone call from customers. Positve close-outs at the yard are a pleasure to interpret. Carcass reports proving heavy muscling, a high percentage Choice and Yield Grades 1 & 2's bring the next smile and along with that, carcass premiums. We have customers who have been with us since our first bull sale in 1993. Our group of 346 solid buyers means the world to us, and numerous of them have experienced some/many/all of the above benefits of using Moser genetics at many points in the cattle cycle since 1993. We are truly blessed to have such a special group of customers that we also call "friends."

Reputations are built over time. Area buyers, sale barns and feedlots know Moser genetics. We recently hosted our 16th annual preconditioned calf sale; commercial replacement females (open or bred) sired by our bulls have commanded premiums the past 16 years.

Over the past 34 years together, we have carefully selected our genetics to raise "the best of the best." Have they all worked? No. But we ran with those that did. Utilizing embryo transfer since 1991, (Thanks, Dr. Kirk Gray and Dr. Clay Breiner!), we have improved our cowherd at an expedited rate. Our registered females are managed the same as our commercial females-if they don't survive in real world, they're gone. We are proud of what our cowherd has become and what it produces every year. Included in this 2016 offering are calving ease, performance, carcass and maternal bulls, as well as many "combination bulls" that excel in of all those traits. EVERY bull in the offering is positive for Marbling AND Ribeye Area. As our ads stated all fall, "The proof IS in the pudding." From calving to feeding to qualities which positively affect the eating experience, we can help you get rewards for pounds and quality. And then after your steers have been marketed, you've got that quality pen of replacement heifers at home yet...nice.

Buyer Information DELIVERY Moser Ranch will pick up the first $250/head on transportation expenses on bulls averaging $5000. We will assist buyers in making the most economical trucking arrangements for other bulls. Transportation is at buyer's risk; please insure your purchases. See insurance information below.

BULL MANAGEMENT

Fall bulls were weaned here on the ranch on April 7, 2016. On May 2, they were moved to a section of native grass for the summer months. Spring bulls were weaned in large lots on October 10, 2015, then wintered on a growing ration. They spent the spring on brome and fescue and were moved to native grass on July 13. On August 2nd, all bulls were weighed in for the start of the gain test. Fall bulls are in an 80 acre native pasture, and spring bulls in a 30 acre native pasture. Target gain was 3.2#/ day. Results are listed in the catalog. The ration consists of corn silage, ground grass hay, wet distillers, cracked corn and a base mineral & vitamin premix.

WE FEEL VERY STRONGLY THAT "RANGE DEVELOPING" OUR BULLS AND NOT PUSHING THEM HARD ON TEST allows them to express their genetics on a more realistic level, stay more structurally sound, and they are presented to you at sale time in "breeding appropriate" condition scores.

Please remember that these bulls are still growing, and will continue to do so for at least the next year to year and a half. Until breeding season, they need to stay on a similar plain of nutrition, 5-7# of grain in addition to silage or hay.

BULL CARE OPTION

If you are unable to take your bull(s) at this time, we offer the following care option: We will feed any purchases free of charge until December 1, 2016. From December 1st to April 1, 2017, we will feed the bulls for $350.00/head. This fee includes normal care and feeding and a spring semen test. Any out of the ordinary expenses-vet, etc.-will be the responsibility of the owner. After April 1, a charge of $3.00/head/day will incur. The $350.00 will be charged at settlement. They will be cared for as they have been prior to the sale. SELLER WILL ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR INJURY OR DEATH OF ANIMAL(S). Insurance is readily available to cover bulls in the event of loss of use or mortality.

INSURANCE AVAILABLE AT SETTLEMENT

CATALOG EPD INFORMATION

"FULL MORTALITY COVERAGE" Rates are as follows: 1 month/2.4% of purchase value; 3 months/3.6%, 6 months/4%, 1 year/ 6%. ULTRASOUND Craig Hays from Critical Insights collected ultrasound images on spring bulls on May 2, 2016. He also collected ultrasound images on our fall bulls on September 28, 2016. We have been providing ultrasound information in one form or another to our customers since 1996.

The following thoughts about ultrasound are important to remember: 1. The American Simmental Association utilizes the ultrasound information in the calculation of the carcass EPDs that they generate. So, the data itself is already figured into the carcass EPDs. We feel that using the carcass EPDs is a more accurate way to make your selection than by using the adjusted raw ultrasound data. To help with this transition, we have developed a "Plus System" and also supplied you with the in-herd ratio for each measured trait.

The system reads as such in the catalog: +++ means a bull scanned in the upper 1/3* for that trait (REA or MRB)

HERD HEALTH Dr. Randall Hobrock, Concordia, Kansas, and Dr. Ann Buchanan, Olsburg, KS, are our herd veterinarians. Health papers will be in order for all cattle.

RULE OF THUMB CONCERNING BULL USE Put a yearling bull with no more than 20-25 cows, and pull him away from the cowherd after a 45 to 80 day breeding season. The older spring born bulls can handle up to 30-35 cows, but please pull them away from the breeding herd after a 45-80 season as well. Young bulls need time to regain condition lost during breeding, and to help them continue to grow and develop properly and rebuild fertility. Fall worming and a complete vaccination schedule is recommended.

RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST

The Moser Ranch is retaining a 1/3 semen interest in all polled bulls in the offering. You will own full possession and salvage value of the animal. In the event that semen sales become a reality on your purchase, the Moser Ranch is basically retaining the right to 1/3 of the semen sales revenue. If you sell the bull to another cattleman, the 1/3 semen interest is still retained by the Moser Ranch. We reserve the right to collect bulls of interest to us at buyer's convenience and seller's expense.

EMBRYO TRANSFER

Cross Country Genetics North, Westmoreland, KS, has been our ET company since we started doing embryo transfer in 1991.

5% REPEAT BUYER DISCOUNT

In an effort to reward loyal bull customers, we are pleased to continue our "Repeat Buyer Discount" policy this year.

This is how it works: If you purchased a bull (or bulls) in our November 14, 2015 sale, you will receive 5% off your total bull purchase in this November 12, 2016 sale. This is a continuous credit policy, which is in effect each year. This 5% discount is determined after all credits have been subtracted from the gross purchase price. FOR THOSE CUSTOMERS WHO USE EXCLUSIVELY MOSER GENETICS FOR THEIR BREEDING STOCK BUT MAY NOT PURCHASE BULLS EVERY YEAR, you can plan on being able to use this repeat discount as well. American Simmental Association's EPDs and $ INDEXES...and then "Our Take" on Bull Selection Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires' EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. The EPDs are generated by actual data turned in by Simmental and SimAngus breeders.

Dollar Indexes ($ INDEXES) (DOLLAR INDEXES) $ Indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal's overall impact on your bottom line and

are expressed in dollars/cow exposed. They are a very simplified method to use in bull selection.

All-Purpose Index (API) Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd with a portion of the daughters kept back as replacements to maintain herd size and the remaining calf crop put on feed and sold grade & yield. Terminal Index (TI) Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade & yield. To use API or TI: First, determine which index to use; if you're keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls.

Harry & Lisa's thoughts on Bull Selection...You can make your bull selection truly your own. Decide what is important in your program.

Then explore the appropriate EPDs or Indexes. Next, visually evaluate those animals that fall into your accepted range of those numbers. Don't oversimplify, but don't select your herdsires using only the numbers either. "Mathematizing" is happening in all breeds; associations are providing all kinds of new figuresindexes, some dollar figures, etc. These are formulated by some estimations and assumptions. When it gets right down to the nuts and bolts of bull selection, use the proven science and keep the other number "tools" in perspective, look at the bulls, consider the seedstock source-their use of proven genetics, their services and their approach to raising real-world cattle in a real-world environment, and then try to buy your herdsires at a reasonable price.

MOSER PREVACC CALF SALES (Since October 2001) Over 6000 head of customer cattle have sold through Moser Influence LMA-VACC sales at Holton Livestock Exchange, Holton, Kansas. Our sale is held in conjunction with Holton Livestock's regular fall LMA-VACC Sale. We must know at least 45 days in advance whether you plan to consign to our PreVacc Sale because of veterinary health work that must be done and paperwork that must be filed. This marketing avenue will keep you on track with the changes the industry is implementing as far as age and source verification, animal ID, and "age of animal" issues for beef's international markets. BULL MANAGEMENT (Since 1993) Just a few additional notes concerning our bull development found at the top of page 6. Our unique approach to range growing our bulls allows them to stay sound. They ARE NOT in a feedlot setting during the gain test, and they ARE NOT fed a hot ration, but instead, a growing ration. Genetics can be expressed favorably under these conditions. Our bulls are hard and structurally sound. They won't boast 1400# yearling weights, but they will go out and breed cows, keep their condition, and transmit their proven genetics to their offspring. Many customers have commented on how our bulls hold together during breeding season and come off cows in as good of shape as when they went on them.

Homozygous Black...Homozygous Polled ~ Exactly what do those terms mean?

In our college genetics books, homozygous is defined as having identical alleles at corresponding loci on homologous chromosomes so that the organism breeds true with respect to these loci. (the definition hasn't changed in 30+ years!)

Homozygous Black: In simpler terms, a homozygous black bull gives a black gene to his offspring every time. He "breeds true" for color. Black, which is dominant to the red color in cattle, will be the color of every animal sired by a homozygous black bull. IF you have cows that carry the dilution gene, (yellow and gray females carry the dilution gene, as do some lighter red cows) they may give that dilution gene to their offspring, which "dilutes" the black color to gray. The homozygous black bull has nothing to do with the resulting gray individual.

Homozygous Polled: Again, a homozygous polled bull will "breed true" and give a polled gene to each of his offspring.

The polled gene is dominant to the horned gene, so all offspring from a homozygous polled bull will be polled.

Aside from our parents, who have always been our most avid supporters, there have been four men who have helped us get to where we are now in the cattle business. First, John Atwater...thank you for hiring a young couple from North Dakota that you barely knew, to manage the Limestone Springs Ranch at Soldier, KS from 1986-early 1994. You gave us the opportunity to develop our dream. Second, Dr. Kirk Gray...you believed in our cattle and us, even when our first donor “bombed� back in 1991. You helped us improve the genetic makeup of our cowherd exponentially over the years, by making “more of our best� through embryo transfer.

Third, Dan Harris...you have been a substantial marketing asset for our program, by agreeing back in 1993 to be our auctioneer for our bull sales. We reasoned that having a local auctioneer would be a “plus�, as we were primarily wanting to supply forward-thinking area commercial cattlemen and women with superior genetics. That was a good decision on our part. You can call most of our local customers by name, and you have enthusiastically supported our customer marketing efforts. Fourth, Pat Keating...thank you for believing in us when we decided to strike out on our own in 1994. Your vision and business savvy have helped us reach levels we never thought possible.

The past year in random pictures, top to bottom...Brother-in-Law Les is pretty handy fixing just about anything, and running just about anything...Harry & Lisa enjoyed a tour of NCBA headquarters in Denver along with Sarah Leonhard last October...Rex’s new colt, “Goose”...How many 4-wheelers and Gators does it take to gather the sale bulls: Cameron, Rex, Harry and LaVerne!...

Sara Colbert, from CARES, selected 4 puppies from Jazzy’s December 31st litter of 11 to enter the Service Dog program-2 Dot, 5 Dot, Tip & Harlow will hopefully graduate in 2017!...Kendra & Rex riding Fyre & Mav while gathering bulls in early August...Tucker absolutely loves burning season...

Harry went to Washington, DC, in April with other KLA officers to attend the NCBA lobbying session...We dug the Moser ‘57 out of mothballs to advertise our 25th bull sale at the annual Lillis St. Patrick’s day parade! See you on November 12th!

Harry was on RFD’s “Cattleman to Cattleman” show as a guest producer last October and spoke of the benefits of Purina minerals & fly control (Thank you, Sarah Leonhard!)...Harry & Lisa delivered bulls to Indiana in January; one went to Purdue University...Tuck & Tate are becoming quite the little horsemen...The water in Mill Creek was 28’ deep at the bridge at Brethour Ranch in Wabaunsee county this spring. It was running wild and out of its banks...

The above "dated" picture on the left holds a special place in our hearts. It was taken on the last Christmas we were living at the Limestone Springs Ranch, south of Soldier, Kansas, December 1993. We had just held our first bull sale in February of that year.

In January 1994, we moved to our ranch at Wheaton, where we've been for the last 22 1/2 years. In that old photo on the left is Tyrel McClintock, a little guy who spent LOTS of time with our kids and in our home when his dad, Ed, worked for us on the Limestone. He was like another son to us! Then Kendra, Kayla and Cameron. In this picture, the kids were almost 8, almost 7, almost 2 and 10. Tyrel married his sweetheart, Meghan, this fall. We are so happy for them, and so blessed to consider him part of our family! The Limestone was a great starting point for us here in Kansas, moving there from North Dakota in 1986.

The 7th & 8th grade Science Classes from Mater Dei Junior High in Topeka, Kansas, spent the day of April 20, 2016, with us to learn more about where the food they eat comes from. We explained cattle production and the role we play, both as seedstock producers and commercial producers, and they were able to view our working facilities and see cattle and horses up close. Students explored the cabs of our combines, semi-trucks and tractors and many other pieces of farming equipment were available for inspection when we switched the conversation from ranching to farming. During a lunch in our shop (the same one where lunch will be served on sale day), we had a question and answer session about agriculture in general. The kids enjoyed grilled hamburgers made with Moser beef, and lots of homemade cookies. Along with their instructor, Mr. Marc Tanking, six adults accompanied the youth as chaperones. Tanking said the kids really enjoyed their day out in rural America, stating, "Some of these kids have never been out of Topeka." At right: Lisa and Harry share about their ranch horses with the kids. We are always eager and proud to tell the story of American Agriculture.
