The President’s Pen

Friends and fellow Angus breeders, My name is Brandon New and I will be your KAA president for 2019. It is my pleasure to lead an organization that is so well regarded, not only within the state of Kansas but also across the country. My phone number is 913-680-4414 and I hope you feel free to call me anytime with any questions or concerns. If I don’t happen to answer leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

For those of you that don’t know me, I own and operate New Haven Angus along with my brother and parents, in Central Leavenworth County (NE corner of the state). We calve about two-thirds of our cow herd in the fall and the remaining third in January and February. This year we are celebrating our 65th year raising Angus cattle. My dad was introduced to the breed when my grandfather started using Angus bulls on his Holstein heifers. The rest is history. I graduated from K-State in 2003 and made my way home to take over the day-to-day operation, as well as the primary decision-making.

My three older siblings and I all grew up in 4-H and the KJAA. We have many fond memories of showing cattle and have made many life-long friends with our involvement in the KAA and KJAA. Many of you may know my brother Damon New who is a past member of the board of directors and past president of the KAA. Growing up as a youngster and attending the Futurity banquet, I was always inspired by the members of the board and the many past presidents. I wanted to be like them, raise good cattle, be humble and give back to a breed and an association that has given me so much. I am honored to not only call them my peers but also my friends.

I am married to Jennifer and we have 3 children together James (9), Whitney (3) and Grace (16 months). Without her support, I would not be able to do this. Thank you dear. I love you.

Deadline Nearing for Beef Leaders Institute

Applications now available for the elite leadership experience offered to Angus breeders.

The Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) is a premier leadership experience for American Angus Association® members, 25-45 years old. It provides a look into the entire beef supply chain, while enhancing participant knowledge of the Association and providing an opportunity for participants to strengthen their leadership skills. Applications are due by Feb. 15. Apply online.

Resources include news articles, market insights, success stories, research summaries and new management techniques. It’s an allencompassing tool for cattlemen targeting quality beef production.

“BLI is a great way for industry leaders to learn more about all segments of the beef industry,” said Caitlyn Brandt, Association events coordinator.

“Attendees will walk away stronger, more effective leaders who will help the Angus breed and beef industry now and in the future.”

For seedstock breeders, the new site includes detailed information on how to leverage the Targeting the Brand program to market Angus bulls. Value calculators and tips for marketing feeder cattle are available for the commercial producer.

Thanks to generous support from the Angus Foundation and Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB), BLI offers producers a chance to tour all facets of the beef production line. With a trip to the Association and tours to feedlots, harvesting and packing plants and industry leading genomic companies, Angus cattlemen and women receive elite hands-on learning and insight into quality cattle production.

The Association will provide transportation during BLI, as well as lodging, meals, and materials. The attendees will be responsible for their round-trip transportation between their home to Kansas City (if flying) or Saint Joseph (if driving), and their departure to home from Cleveland, Ohio, (if flying) or Kansas City to get the vehicle at the American Angus Association. Transportation from the Kansas City airport on both Sunday, June 16 and Friday, June 21 will be provided.

“It’s an effort to help demonstrate how the dollars generated from our brand flow back to the ranch,” Erceg says.

Packers pay producers more than $75 million annually in premiums for cattle that meet the brand’s ten quality specifications.

“That’s not just pocket change,” she says. “We strive to help cattlemen capture their piece of those premium dollars.”

The brand’s first producer-facing website, CABpartners.com, was named for its prominent feedyard partner program that operated for 15 years. Veteran KLA Staff Member Mike Beam Named Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Kansas Gov.-Elect Laura Kelly named long-time KLA staff person Mike Beam as her secretary of agriculture today. Beam will become interim secretary January 14 and remain in that capacity until confirmation by the Kansas Senate. Beam will lead the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) and the more than 300 employees who work for the agency.

KDA advocates for the agriculture industry, encourages economic growth in agriculture, ensures a safe food supply, protects natural resources and safeguards animal health. "Mike Beam is a respected leader in Kansas agriculture and uniquely qualified to provide guidance and innovation at the Department of Agriculture," said Gov.-Elect Kelly.

Beam has spent the past 38 years working for KLA members and the livestock industry. As a senior vice president for the association, he worked on issues identified as priorities by the KLA Stockgrowers Council. He has been a key part of the KLA lobbying team at the state Capitol and in Congress. He served the last 15 years as executive director of Ranchland Trust of Kansas. Beam came to KLA in 1980 as a field representative. "Mike has had a significant influence on the success of KLA for the past 38 years," said KLA Chief Executive Officer Matt Teagarden.

"Gov.-Elect Kelly recognized his deep understanding of agriculture and ag policy and his ability to work effectively with all stakeholders in naming him to this important position for farmers and ranchers." During his time at KLA, Beam was appointed by governors and state agency secretaries to serve on numerous high-level working groups discussing the Flint Hills, prescribed burning, conservation programs, ecotourism, deer hunting and wildlife management. He provided input to each based on KLA member priorities. Angus Foundation Raises $127,500 at the National Western Stock Show Angus breeders support education, youth and research by purchasing Foundation Heifer Package and heifer pregnancies. Since 1980, the Angus Foundation has delivered an elite Angus Foundation Heifer Package at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver to generate unrestricted funds for Angus education, youth and research efforts. The Angus Foundation also offered five cutting-edge confirmed heifer pregnancies from notable Angus breeders. Combined, the six lots raised an impressive $127,500 in support of the Angus breed’s future.

Foundation Heifer Package: Tari Hoagland and Rick Smith of Lakeview Angus in Mead, Colorado, purchased the Angus Foundation Heifer for $65,000. The package also includes: 30 days of free insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Geneva, Illinois; free transportation to the buyer’s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Illinois; and an advanced reproductive technology package from Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa. Krebs Ranch of Gordon, Nebraska, donated the elite heifer, KR Queen 8213. The scarcity in her genetics made her a valuable investment for the buyers, as she is the only ET calf of that particular mating to leave the ranch. “We are so excited to be bringing this heifer back home with us,” Hoagland said. “She’ll be a great donor and will be instrumental in developing our bulls.”

Apply for Angus Foundation Scholarships

Angus Foundation scholarships applications are available online.

Scholarship applications are now available for college students affiliated with the Angus breed. The Angus Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students each year as a way to help Angus youth achieve their education goals and offset the continually rising costs of tuition at higher education institutions.

“Angus youth are certainly the future of this industry,” said Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Higher education costs continue to rise, and we want to help the students get a head start, and awarding scholarships is just one way to help.”

Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships Applicants for undergraduate and graduate scholarships must have, at one time, been a member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and currently be an active Junior, Regular or Life member of the American Angus Association.

The following documents are required to be considered for a 2019 undergraduate or graduate scholarship: the 2019 scholarship application; three letters of recommendation; copy of current high school/college/ university transcript; and applicant’s Association member code. Undergraduate and graduate scholarship applications, eligibility requirements and application guidelines can be found online at angusfoundation.org. Applications are due May 1, 2019.

Allied Angus Breeders Scholarships The Angus Foundation will also award three $1,000 scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students who use Angus genetics in a commercial cattle operation breeding program or whose parents use Angus genetics. Emphasis will be placed on applicants’ knowledge of the cattle industry and perspective of the Angus breed.

Applicants or their parents/guardians must be members of the American Angus Association or have an affiliate member code.

The applicants or their parents/guardians must have transferred or been transferred an Angus registration paper in the last 36 months (on or after May 1, 2016). The scholarship is applicable to any field of study. A separate application, from the general Foundation application is required for the Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship.

The application can be found on the Angus Foundation website. Applicants having received or applied for Angus Foundation undergraduate scholarships using our standard general application this year or in past years, will not be considered for this scholarship.

Certified Angus Beef/National Junior Angus Association Scholarship Since 1990, the NJAA has teamed up with Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) LLC to help Angus youth pursue their higher education goals. The selected applicant will receive a $1,000 scholarship. A separate application, from the Angus Foundation scholarship application, is required for the CAB/NJAA scholarship. Requirements are similar to the general Angus Foundation scholarship; more details can be found on the application. The application is available on the Angus Foundation website.

“Two core areas of the Foundation’s mission are youth and education,” said Jenkins. “Our Angus and allied commercial producer youth deserve the best higher education learning environment they can experience, and these scholarship opportunities help make that possible.”

Dale was one of the original five McCurry Brothers and a farmer and rancher until his retirement. Dale’s biggest joys in life included K-State Athletics, gardening, Angus cattle and spending time with his family.

He was a member of the Mount Hope Bible Fellowship Church, a Korean War Veteran and a life long member of the American Angus Association. Dale served as president of the Kansas Angus Association in 1967 and was named an Honorary Member in 1984.
